Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Ficaria verna bulbils[edit]

Hi Kenraiz! I have just uploaded some photos of Ficaria bulbils, including [this one]. I see you had done so too, a year or so ago. You have identified yours as Ficaria verna ssp. verna i.e. the type species. However, I believe that, according to Sell (1994), it is only two subspecies of F. verna that form bulbils, i.e. ssp. ficariiformis and ssp. bulbilifer. See this article for details. I can't distinguish between the two: consulting the key in this article, the distinguishing features between the two subspecies seem to be size (which I find varies considerably, even in the same cultivar, depending on the growing conditions and aspect). About this picture, we (Halvard& me) think that this is the female of Lycaena tityrus, not L. virgaureae. --NicolasGrandjean (talk) 22:15, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kenraiz,

Your photograph Image:Medicago_lupulina_kz1.jpg does not show Medicago lupulina but a Trifolium species. The flowers of Medicago lupulina look quite different (see e. g. Image:MedicagoLupulina.jpg) and the stalks of the individual flowers are very short so that the inflorescence looks more compact than an inflorescence of a similar Trifolium species. I added a remark in the index page and also in the image discussion page. I suggest that you move your image to Category:Unidentified_Trifolium and rename it accordingly. opem być[edit]

Witam. Pragnę Ci przypomnieć słowa adminship is not big deal, a także aktywny i godny zaufania uczestnik projektu, który pomaga innym. Masz spory elektorat i zaufanie społeczności. To ty przedstawiałeś chłodne nastawienie i pomoc w moim początkach edytorskich jakimi były dyskusje PDA i PAnM. JDavid (talk) 12:04, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Kenraiz!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

AUTHORIZATION FOR PUBLICATION[edit]

Hi!

My name is Edoardo Bit, I am an architect and also a “young researcher” of the University of Ferarra (Italy).

I am writing a book on the “green walls technologies” and I have found very interesting a photo in your page. So, I would kindly ask you if I can use it in my book.

Obviously, if you gently decide to grant me the permission, your name (or your nickname) and the link of the picture will be correctly cited in the credits of my publication.

The photo which I would use is:

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. odder (talk) 22:47, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Hi Kenraiz, for images taken in the Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo, please use this category as well! -- Ies (talk) 15:34, 25 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have hundreds pictures made there. To category Jardín Botánico I have put pictures which present views garden or somehow its specific parts. I do not think that photos only with plants and their parts are usefull in garden category. Especially that plant photos are not separated from photos which presents garden. Kenraiz (talk) 15:47, 25 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid I have to disagree. On the contrary it's very informatic and useful to see what certain plant species are grown in a certain Botanical Garden. (Personally, I visited several Botanical Gardens only because I read or heared that for me interesting plants (succulent plants and Euphorbiaceae) are grown there.) Therefore I established Category:Plants in Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo‎ and hope that you use it for all your images of plants taken there. Greetings, -- Ies (talk) 16:19, 25 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Armenia[edit]

Z miasta Goris odjeżdżają minibusy (marszrutki) do Stepanakertu. Gdy będziesz w prowincji Sjunik to polecam spróbować oghi, czyli mocnej wódki robionej z owoców morwy, a więc z tego: File:2014 Górski Karabach, Klasztor Gandzasar, Morwa biała (02).jpg File:2014 Górski Karabach, Klasztor Gandzasar, Morwa biała (01).jpg. So the second picture also show Sedum spurium? Regards. DenesFeri (talk) 10:50, 16 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Pinus wangii var. wilsonii" in the San Francisco Botanical Garden[edit]

Hi Ken - did the SF BG give any info on this? The name is not validly published, and the specimen in the photo is Pinus parviflora, not P. wangii. My guess is that the SF BG was given the plant by a nursery, and that the nursery invented a "new" plant as a sales tactic (i.e., the BG is a victim of advertising fraud by the nursery). - MPF (talk) 11:10, 31 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

File renaming reason[edit]

Hello, you’ve requested the renaming of several files showing Paronychia argentea exemplars. I followed your requests, but you should in future be careful, which renaming reason you select. This time it was number 3 "error in filename", and this was clearly wrong. Instead you should have chosen reason number 2 "meaningless or ambiguous filename" or (this time even better, but I noticed it too late) reason number 1, because you have uploaded the files. (Side remark: If you want to add some files to this series of "Paronychia argentea kz…", start with number 14: For whatever reason you had left out no. 11, so I shifted the last 3 files one down.) — Speravir – 00:29, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Iberis sempervirens 'Schneeflocke' or Iberis sempervirens 'Snowflake'[edit]

Hello Kenraiz,

(Please excuse me for writing in German. But if I use Google Translator with my bad English skills, then it can lead to misunderstandings.

My questions to you: You have created the category Category:Iberis sempervirens 'Schneeflocke'. A user has uploaded many pictures with the name 'Snowball' ([4]). Are both identical ([5] and [6])? What name would you suggest the German or the English? For the other, of course, a redirect is established. The user has uploaded more than 34,000 photos of plants. Very, very many pictures of plant varieties. I have so far sorted the varieties only into existing categories or created new ones when I found the name of the variety in the scientific literature. Otherwise, I have the photos only once sorted into the top categories (species or genus). Do you still have a hint for me how to find plant cultivations easier? Thanks in advance and sincerely, Hystrix (talk) 08:17, 10 August 2017 (UTC))[reply]

Category:Nothofagus antarctica[edit]

Ten gatunek był opisany jako Nothofagus × alpina. Na The Plant List są:

  • Nothofagus alpina (Poepp. ex A. DC.) Oerst. – osobny gatunek
  • Nothofagus × alpina (Poepp. ex A. DC.) Oerst. – synonim Nothofagus antarctica

Tournasol7 (talk) 08:11, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Araucaria araucana subcategories[edit]

Hi @Kenraiz and Salicyna: - you recently created a number of new subcategories in Category:Araucaria araucana. This has unfortunately resulted in serious loss of important information, whereby all natural occurrence specimens were in the root category, and all cultivated specimens were in Category:Araucaria araucana (cultivated) or subcategories thereof. Your recategorising has wrecked this important separation, making it impossible for users to know whether a photo is of wild specimens or not, without detailed examination of the image text. Please undo this mess so that the natural and the cultivated are separated again. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 00:24, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And ditto Araucaria heterophylla, and any other species categories to be messed up in this way - MPF (talk) 00:33, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cakile maritima[edit]

Hi Kenraiz - apologies for the miscategorisation of these 3! I'd assumed that all in the sequence File:Cakile maritima kz1.jpg - File:Cakile maritima kz9.jpg were part of one set all from the same location. It helps a lot if the file names include the location, then this wouldn't happen so easily ;-) MPF (talk) 00:53, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Misidentified images of Hippocrepis[edit]

Hi Kenraiz, I found the three photographs above in Category:Hippocrepis multisiliquosa. However, these images cannot show Hippocrepis multisiliquosa, because the fruits of your species have their "holes" on the inner side of the arcs that the fruits form (the convex side), whereas real Hippocrepis multisiliquosa has the "holes" on the outer side (the concave side), see e.g. my photograph File:Hippocrepis multisiliquosa RF.jpg and also File:Horseshoe plant on Malta.jpg. I found this (in other words) both in the Flora Europaea and in a German language flora of Crete (Jahn/Schönfelder, Exkursionsflora für Kreta) and also got it explained to me by the botanist who told me the ID of my photograph in a German botany forum, https://forum.pflanzenbestimmung.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=36541 . So assuming that the species given at the site http://www.flora-of-cyprus.eu/ are complete, your plant must be Hippocrepis ciliata. The large papillae on the fruits also nicely match Hipocrepis ciliata, whereas Hippocrepis multisiliquosa should have small or no papillae on the fruits according to Flora Europaea. And this is something that might mean that the image of Hipocrepis multisiliquosa on http://www.flora-of-cyprus.eu/cdm_dataportal/taxon/98b7ba31-7e63-4483-b5ec-d73b65dd6352 might actually also show a different species. Anyway, your Hipocrepis was clearly misidentified and I am going to change this. If you do not disagree, we should also have the photographs renamed to avoid any confusion. Copyright pictures[edit]

Dear author,

we would like to use the following pictures for a biodiversity handout to train and inform farmers in the field of biodiversity:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trifolium_dubium_kz1.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aphanes_arvensis_kz1.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trifolium_dubium_kz1.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lathyrus_paluster1.jpg

Your name along with a link to the original file and the creative common license will be named in the pictures index (sorted by page number and order of pictures). Although the creative common license does allow the use of the pictures for our purpose, I wanted to make sure you are also fine with us using them.

I would be very grateful if you could give me a short answer.

Kind regards,

identity[edit]

Hi Krzysztof - sadly, all your photos which you'd added at Cupressus atlantica are actually C. glabra, which is an invasive exotic species in Morocco. Note the thicker, more angular and more strongly glaucous shoots, and cones with just 6 scales (8-12 in C. atlantica); for the true species, compare here (pp. 78-96) and here. I'll reclassify & rename the photos shortly. - MPF (talk) 18:46, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Unfortunate that you missed the real thing; you need to go up the road to the Tizi-n-test pass, hope you get another opportunity. MPF (talk) 21:02, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not Watsonia coccinea but Hesperantha coccinea?[edit]

Hi Kenraiz, Your two files, Image:Watsonia_coccinea_kz1.jpg and Image:Watsonia_coccinea_kz2.jpg, uploaded on 24 December 2016, in my opinion depict Hesperantha coccinea (=Schizostylis coccinea). Have taken the liberty to move the two images to Hesperantha coccinea. If you agree with this identification, you may want to consider changing the file names as well. Best regards, SAplants (talk) 13:47, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Petasites frigidus[edit]

Jeszcze raz dziękuję i pozdrawiam Jerzystrzelecki (talk) 16:45, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Identity of "File:Watsonia stenosiphon kz1.jpg"[edit]

Hi Kenraiz, On 30 December 2017 you uploaded an image of a pink-flowered member of Watsonia (Iridaceae) taken in the Auckland Botanic Gardens, and filed it under Watsonia stenosiphon. This is an obvious misidentification, presumably based on (as unfortunately is so often the case) an incorrect label in the garden. Watsonia stenosiphon is a relatively small plant with bright orange flowers. The pink-flowered watsonias are particularly difficult to identify from photographs, a task made even more difficult by the existence of garden cultivars. However, I suspect your plant may well be a form of the widely grown Watsonia borbonica (= W. pyramidata). You may want to use the latter name for the image, or move it to Unidentified Watsonia. Best regards, SAplants (talk) 07:24, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Category:Rubus schmidelioides[edit]

Tournasol7 (talk) 23:53, 11 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Siewki[edit]

Pozdrawiam, Nova (talk) 06:55, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I did Category:Baum 12 to Aesculus parviflora]] Baummapper (talk) 16:51,

Krzysztofie! Ja jestem człowiekiem 73-letnim i mocno schorowanym. Antekbojar

Location?[edit]

Hi Kenraiz - do you have a more detailed location for File:Juniperus cedrus kz5.JPG, please? In particular, was it of a natural wild specimen, or a cultivated plant? Thanks! - MPF (talk) 22:20, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have added some more detailed information about location of specimen. I am not sure whether it was cultivated specimen or not - there was a mixture of some ornamental shrubs (different species) close to the path and wild on slopes of hill. It is native species there. Kenraiz (talk) 22:38, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, thanks! At that altitude (630 m), it will be cultivated; the species occurs naturally only at higher altitudes (mostly around 2,000-2,200 m, rarely down to about 1,000 m). I had hoped you might have taken the photo higher above El Tanque, rather than below :-) - MPF (talk) 22:49, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sortkey usage and DEFAULTSORT[edit]

Hello, and first off, thank you for helping out with the rose cultivars! It's a huge mess to manage, almost as much work as an actual rose garden. I noticed you'd added some sortkeys that aren't up to code. Fortunately, it's a small thing that's easy to fix.

  • Sortkeys shall have no diacritics, ligatures, or punctiation--naked letters only
  • Þórsmörk -> Thorsmork
  • æ -> ae
  • DEFAULTSORT sets a default sortkey which will be used for all categories that don't have an individual sortkey. The template goes above the categories in site code.
  • e.g. François Fancyboy Poshington-Plentyofwealth III ->
  • or Rosa 'Honeycakes '89' ->
  • or Rosa 'Darling' (1966) -> .

Most importantly: naked letters for sortkeys! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me anything on my talkpage or Ping me in a discussion elsewhere. I'm not always active, but I check Commons almost daily.

Begonia brachypoda ?[edit]

Hi Kenraiz. It looks like there has been a confusion of species in Botanischen Garten Berlin. The files in Category:Begonia brachypoda are very different from the original description : too many flowers and much bigger leaves. I happens that labels are mixed up. Do you have a possibility to go back to the place and ask for an explanation ? --Begalma (talk) 21:21, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nova (talk) 16:35, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dzięki. Zgłosiłam na kontakt POWO, może poprawią. U nas też praktycznie wszystko do poprawy :-( Nova (talk) 17:08, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hej, odesłali mnie do ICN Art 60.EX 39 https://www.iapt-taxon.org/nomen/main.php gdzie stoi: "Ex. 39. Tetragonia tetragonoides (Pall.) Kuntze (Revis. Gen. Pl. 1: 264. 1891) was based on Demidovia tetragonoides Pall. (Enum. Hort. Demidof: 150. 1781), the specific epithet of which was derived from the generic name Tetragonia and the suffix ‑oides. Because this is a compound epithet derived from a noun and a suffix, not two Greek or Latin words, it is not to be altered to ‘tetragonioides’." Nova (talk) 16:24, 10 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Pozdrawiam, Nova (talk) 07:30, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sedum griseum ?[edit]

Hi Kenraiz. I've seen your photo Sedum griseum kz01 and I think, a Sedum I found on my green roof could be the same. Would you agree? Greetings from Ruhland --Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 06:52, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR: . Yes, it looks like the same species and, as I see in Google, this species is used in green roofs. Kenraiz (talk) 13:14, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, whish you to have a good week --Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 18:44, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

But I have an additional question: have you found any trade or common name? (I've seen somewhat like spanish wallpepper = Sedum hispanicum, which imho could not be perennial; beside this I've found only names for similiar looking plants, hybrids, predicted as blooming pink). --Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 20:48, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR: , you have right. Sedum griseum looks different. I am not sure which species was wrongly labelled in botanical garden in Gottingen so I removed my photos to "unidentified Sedum". In description I added that it is probably S. hispanicum. Kenraiz (talk) 18:31, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, unless that this was not my goal, S. hispanicum (in my honest opinion) not fits your, my and the cited photos. I found the species S. hispanicum here, too, and it grows from seedlings and was blooming in the second year, and never it was perennial. The unfortunately mentioned "trade names" with reference to this species seem to be wrong, anyway. S. hispanicum is unuseful for green roofs - if merchants declare here plants so (as I found), it must be false. My citations of pink blooming hybrids can't be whether be your, nor my photos - they where the only names I found and therefor I asked for your Google-discoveries.
And my question mark means my (not your) photos. We have photos from two botanical gardens, looking different, and don't know, if it is the same species or, what is the right. We don't have photos of blooming S. griseum here (accept yours).
In Göttingen are
      • an "Old botanical garden"
      • an "Forest-botanical garden"
      • an "Experimental botanical garden"
I think your photos are taken in the first named, aren't they? So I can ask there and hope for clearance (if not you have a better contact there, from a photo permission, e.g.).
And: What names and may be photos, especial blooming, have you found used as "S. griseum" for green roofs? Best regards --Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 22:21, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Chrumps (talk) 17:41, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

the shape of cotyledons seems different BubikolRamios (talk) 06:54, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@BubikolRamios: Yes, but there was no another Cirsium in vicinity. Shape of cotyledons is often variable depending on light conditions. In sun they are often thick and short, in dark elongated and thin (the photos from Jamno were taken in alder forest). The similar situation is then seedling grows in nature and in glasshouse. Caucalis platycarpos vs. Orlaya daucoides[edit]

Nova (talk) 11:08, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rosa 'Mevrouw Henri Daendels'[edit]

Rosa 'Mevrouw Henri Daendels'

Hi Kenraiz,

For the article G.A.H. Buisman & Zoon in the Dutch Wikipedia, I used rose photos of yours. With the photo of Rosa 'Mevrouw Henri Daendels' it seems to me that the photo is rotated 90 degrees. Is that correct, could you have a look at that?

Lonicera periclymenum[edit]

good day.does this lonicera it grow in greece and turkey? Thank you for answer in advance 5.197.252.46 13:38, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

i mean does lonicera periclymenum grow in wild nature? Are greece and turkey native range of this plant? 5.197.252.46 13:55, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is easy to check on the site POWO. In Greece yes – is native (but only in the most NW part [8]), in Turkey not. The more common are L. etrusca and L. caprifolium there. Kenraiz (talk) 14:22, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lycium depressum[edit]

The images in this name are incorrect. The plant in the picture is not Lycium depressum Ariesaada (talk) 06:37, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ariesaada: Thanks. It was labeled as Lycium depressum but in fact it is not similar to pictures of species from natural stands. Maybe it was mistake made by botanical garden staff. I do not exclude that identification is correct but plant does not look typically because of influence of different (fertile) habitat and climate. I have removed pictures to 'Unidentified Lycium' folder. Kenraiz (talk) 07:18, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
