Use of State Street Bridge Picture

The Chicago History Museum is interested in using the image of the State Street Bridge in an educational activity to have a current bridge picture to show students and I would like to know how the copyright would work in such a situation. Hey, Jeremy - in regards to the above image which you deleted, I've been through the en contribution history of the en Wikipedia uploader and have no reason to doubt that the photo was uploaded by the firm Asymptote Architecture, the copyright holder. Was there a reason you simply deleted the photo rather than dropping me a note (here or on en), or listing it at COM:DEL? If you have no objections, I'm going to undelete the photo. Ugh - I did some more checking and I have to say I'm mystified and appalled by your actions regarding this photo, and I sincerely hope that this isn't your standard modus operandi as an administrator, or Wikimedia is in serious trouble. Put yourself in the position of the uploader - they provided a source and a license for the photo. An administrator shows up, strikes through the free license they provided, then drops a totally inappropriate warning template on their talk page that the photo they uploaded has no license. No attempt to contact them, apparently, and no helpful instructions on how to confirm the license they provided, through OTRS or otherwise. What would you think if someone did this for a photo that you uploaded? Please apply a little more diligence and common sense before running around and deleting useful content (and, in the process, alienating potential future contributors of free content). I encourage you to spend a little more time on creating/obtaining content, and appreciating the effort that goes into that side of our common endeavor, as opposed to simply summarily deleting material that you find suspicious for whatever reason. Hi, I think that there is very good reason to question the uploads of the en Wikipedia uploader. They have given the source of the file as a photobucket account, surely if they were the copyright holder the source would be 'self' or the firm 'Asymptote Architecture'. I see nothing on the photobucket site to suggest that the images there are under the GFDL. Before moving any of these images to the Commons I think that it would be a good idea to verify with Asymptote Architecture that they are indeed releasing their images under the GFDL--it would be great if they are, but very unusual. I would normally use PUI but I felt that in this case the website given as the source made it clear that the image is not GFDL. —JeremyA 17:46, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes, he/she uploaded a bunch of images in July, had a good few of them deleted then, and hasn't logged in since. I do apologize for not contacting you, that was an error on my part—it really annoys me when people undo my edits without contacting me and I should have done to you as I like people to do to me. However, I still think that this persons uploads are very questionable—it is very common for people to find images on the web and upload them with a made up licence. —JeremyA 18:06, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

If you look at the person's other uploads, I think any doubt you may have that the uploader was Asymptote Architecture will be erased - for example, see this. Once I saw this, I even left the editor a conflict of interest warning and listed them as a COI editor here. However, I still don't understand striking through the GFDL license on the image page, flagging the image for speedy deletion, and then leaving a talkpage message that their uploaded image has no license, with no instructions for OTRS etc...do you see why I would object to this? I struck the licence because I found it very hard to believe that these images were uploaded to Wikipedia by (or with permission from) the copyright holder. If the uploader had claimed to be the copyright holder I would probably have ignored the image, but the fact that the they are sourced to a photobucket account rather than being given appropriate credit convinced me that the uploader was not the copyright holder. As the uploader has not edited since July I assumed that trying to message them in a sensible way would probably have been fruitless—however, with hindsight I agree that I probably should have tried rather than just sending them a boilerplate message. Reading the image description you link to I do agree with you that reads like someone trying to use Wikipedia for free advertising, which does make me question my certainty. Perhaps an email to the company would resolve the issue—although I can't get their website to work (it crashed my computer) so I haven't yet found a contact address. —JeremyA 19:05, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

I sincerely appreciate the apology, thank you. I hope you're not upset that I've undeleted the image - I'll take responsibility for it and the other images from that uploader that I transwikied. Although this may sound cynical, I watch WP:COIN at en Wikipedia because, whatever their other faults, COI and autobiographical editors often upload their images under free license, which is the silver lining in the cloud of conflict-of-interest editing. I personally have no doubt that the images were uploaded by the copyright holder...do you think we should get e-mail verification for every PD-self or GFDL-self image on the Commons? That would grind the project to a standstill....though WP:PUI or COM:DEL discussion is definitely appropriate for borderline material. I think we need to have some measure of trust. Of course I don't think that email verification should be sought for all images where the uploader claims to be the copyright holder. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Chicago L photo CTA Brown Line usage

I'm working on a documentary about Minnesota's Iron Range for the public TV station up here (Minneapolis St. Paul) and the Minnesota Humanities Center. The doc will be used primarily to educate teachers about the significance of the Iron Range. Use of several images seen in Wikimedia Commons and on your Flikr page...

Hi Jeremy,

I'm working on a website/blog called TotallyFreeChicago.com where I list all the free events in the Chicago area. I was looking in Wikimedia for some unique header images for the page and found your Lablue picture. I love it and went further to your Flickr page. There I found a few more fun-angled Chicago pics I'd like to use. My idea was to assemble the pictures into a 1300x160 pixel image that would lay under the title of my page/blog. I have several of these large images that rotate when you visit other pages on the site. Because I have no money and no photographic skills, I'm snagging public domain photos from Wikimedia Commons. Anyway, I was not sure how to properly attribute your image(s), so I thought I should just ask. Can I use your images for this project?

Below are all the images I would like permission to use, if possible. Lablue is the only one I have seen on the Commons so far, so I understand if the others are not available for public use. Lablue bean top of the dome reflections on paulina walking alone

If I can use these, the best way I could think of to give credit was to combine them all into one larger image, then put your name in the bottom right corner. I'm not sure how else to do this effectively on the site. If you're ok with the use, please feel free to suggest a better way of attributing the work properly. Thanks!

Hi there! I've been working on various graphics to spruce up Wikipedia articles I'm developing, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to share the style information for your graph of the population of Sheffield, England. Did you use InkScape, Illustrator, or something else? What color did you pick for your gridlines and the background? Is there a set style I should use for graphs? Mistaken deletion

You banned User:Akalethia for continued uploading of copyrighted images, upon viewing his uploads today I believe all his current uploads are again copyright violations. The one I tagged for speedy is clearly a copyright violation, the others have different meta tags and are VEEEERY likely pulled from online photo albums, one even has a Picasa tag which means its probably from Picasa Web Albums. Files to be deleted

Hi, I send you this message to ask if you can delete the following pictures:

The reason for my deletion request is because those files had a wrong name. They don't show a Jaguar but a Daimler (very similar to a Jaguar but it's not a Jaguar). The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

Burying the Hatchet – Our peaceful way home

I’m writing on behalf of Sean Strub, the mayor of Milford, PA and producer of a documentary about the Lenni Lenape native Americans and the Tom Quick monument saga.

We are seeking permission for the following image, which we would like to show for a few seconds in our documentary:

'Defense' by Henry Herring, 1928

Some background: The Tom Quick monument was erected in the late 1800s and celebrated an early settler of North Eastern Pennsylvania. The legend goes that Tom Quick murdered 99 natives after witnessing his father’s death. The documentary traces the history of the monument and how descendants of the local tribes and descendants of the Tom Quick family worked together with the mayor of Milford and the historical society to create a space for healing. A new exhibit in a local museum placed the monument in a proper historical context where the Lenni Lenape took the opportunity to share the story of their forced migration and suffering. This resulted in healing, collaboration, and a significant voluntary land donation by local residents.

We’re hoping to release the film in a few months on WVIA, our local PBS channel, and hopefully run it at a couple of festivals and, if there’s interest, diffuse it further.
