Hello, Hiob!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Pay attention to copyright
File:VictorVPhono-Discussion-Rbmk343.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Maybe this is only an mistake: Also the file File:VictorVPhone-Discussion-Rbmk343.jpg are duplicates of File:VictorVPhonograph.jpg. The File I marked as a copyright violation is described as "own work" which it is not. The other file has an OTRS-pending tag that is not logical. To explain: The source file File:VictorVPhonograph.jpg has a permission to reuse it, the license. You can use this file without asking - so you dont need a new permission or any OTRS ticket - as long as you attribute the original author and as long as you publish you derivative work under the same license, cc-by-sa-2.5. --Martin H. I deleted both files, they are both smaller in size and more blurred. The original version File:VictorVPhonograph.jpg is better. --Martin H. (talk) 02:32, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you, and sorry for trouble.Bison-343 (talk) 03:07, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Your recent flickr uploads : Categorisation[edit]

Hi, please do not categorize flickr uploads (an example of your recent activity):

Category:Cochin (Kochi!) AND
Category:Kerala AND
Category:India

Please save time and capacity on commons by categorizing:

Category:Kathakali

Please use as far as possible the "most fitting" categories, and, do not add - in addition - the categories of the state and country, too. Please study Commons:Categories referring to an accurate categorisation, simplifying your further uploads and categorisation in general.

Thank you for your assistance, Roland 16:23, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Oh! Sorry, I will recategorize my last uploads, with Category:Kathakali when it's necessary. But, in some cases, I would like to put Category:Kerala and Category:Kathakali. What do you think about? Hiob (•) 16:32, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Hiob, no problem, referring to Commons:Categories "Kerala" is not usefull, as "Kathakali" is a "sub-category" - please see Category:Culture of Kerala and Category:Tourism in Kerala ;-) Regards, Roland 16:37, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Your recent uploads: Categorisation[edit]

Hi Hiob, please do not categorize your uploads (an example of your recent activity):

Please use as far as possible the category of the regarding city/town/village or district (if there's no category), or, a localized better 'fitting' i.e. the 'most fitting"' category(ies), and, do not add - in addition - the categories of the city, state and country, too.

For further information on categories please read Commons:Categories referring to an accurate categorisation, simplifying your further uploads and categorisation in general. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the commons:help desk.

Thank you for your assistance, Roland 04:06, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Oh! You known, I was sure I'll make an error with category; an error like this. Sorry and thank to prevent me. Hiob (•) 04:11, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
