Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Categories on Juneau pictures.[edit]

First of all, great photos, thanks. I have emptied out Category:Capitol of Alaska and will likewise empty Category:Capital of Alaska as redundant with Category;Juneau, Alaska. You've probably figured out by now that Commons avoids duplicative categories. I made Category:Douglas, Alaska a subcat of Juneau and I will do likewise with Category:Auke Bay. Your smaller categories I've left as redlinks for now.

I am hesitating on Category:Rain Country. Nominally it is redundant with Category:Juneau, Alaska, but it looks good, your style and photo selection make for an impressive display. My inclination is to make Category:Photographs by Gillfoto and make Rain Country a subcategory thereof. This would be a hidden category (unless you can show notability as a photographer) but would still show on image pages. If you do not like this solution, let me know and please suggest (and implement) something else. The contents would make a great gallery. Dankarl (talk) 04:04, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am no expert on notability criteria, but some evidence would be solo shows and photos in museums for art photography, photo spreads in major magazines, mentions in news articles, reprinting of published news or feature photographs by independent publishers. Commons policy here is not to my knowledge very well established; the notability criteria on WP might be a guide. Dankarl (talk) 03:35, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The other route to notability is producing a historically significant body of work; examples Frank Nowell, E.A. Hegg, Harley Nygren.

For examples of hidden categories for photographers see Category:Photographs by brewbooks and Category:Photographs by Frank Kovalchek. In my understanding, any photographer contributing work to WC can have a hidden category. OK the category and move are done. I'll leave it to you to add the rest of your photos. If you want to add another subcat for another location etc you can just copy the text from Category:Rain Country and modify as needed. Also please look through the Alaska category tree and add appropriate categories to your photos.

I suppose, start with Category:Alaska and click categories, click their categories, etc. Not much to do about the user interface except experiment and check your work. There's always the undo link. Your photos and categories[edit]

First, let me compliment you on your great photos. You're a real good photographer. On some of them though, you are overcategorizing them. If a photo fits in Category:Juneau, Alaska then it should not also have Category:Alaska Panhandle. If you go to the category of Juneau, Alaska you'll see at the bottom of the page that it is a sub-category of Category:Alaska Panhandle and Category:Alaska Panhandle is a sub-category of Category:Southeast Alaska. The location category of a photo should be as exact as possible. Otherwise, they could be also categorized with Category:Alaska, Category:United States, Category:North America, and Category:Americas. --Mjrmtg (talk) 02:53, 26 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dates for AMHS ferry photos[edit]

Hey, I was looking at your photos of AMHS vessels and they're great! You have great photographic talent. Anyway, I noticed that a lot of the dates are clearly wrong. For example there are some that say that they were taken on November 30th, 1899. 1899 is clearly not the right year so you should go thru all the photos you've taken of AMHS' Blue canoes and fix the dates. Thanks for taking care of these. For the visitor-attraction photos in Fairbanks, in particular, some more identification and subcategories would be useful. Also i wonder if you could help sub-categorize Juneau pictures. The NRHP pictures would be a good place to start. For instance, I gave the Valentine building a subcat and the 2009 renovation a further subcat of that, which could then be categorized further by itself. Go ahead and delete it as I do not have want you request (which I do not understand). I would like to say an image that is reproduced at such an angle could not be reproduced as an original. This would be an extreme case of copyright law being applied. When you photograph a car, a building any many made item is that a copyright violation. Signing your posts is required on talk pages and it is a Commons policy to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Cars do not have copyrights, so there is never a problem with them. Buildings do have copyrights, and in 59 countries, including France and Italy, it is not possible to photograph them for Commons. Juneau buses[edit]

I couldn't help but notice that a crop of this photo appears on the Capital Transit website. I presume the other photo is yours, too, but I didn't look that closely. Are those Gillig Phantoms? They runs those buses in Fairbanks, too, while I believe the Anchorage People Mover buses are mostly if not exclusively GMCs. Also enjoyed seeing the old Orion buses, as it reminded me of riding in them a few times back in the day (I last visited Juneau 19 years ago). I recently obtained a copy of Juneau Portrait by John Greely and Mark Kelley. There's a photo of an Orion sharing the street in Douglas with a pedestrian during a swirling snowstorm. Because of that snowstorm, details were sketchy, but it appeared to be the 3rd Street main drag. Cheers.RadioKAOS (talk) 04:02, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello RadioKAOS, it's been a while since I did anything on Wikimedia so hope this works out. Yes there are my photos, I was employed with Capital Transit for going on 11 years. I was always trying to help with their limited PR and graphics in house. I have a number of Orion pics at my Flickr website under gillfoto. I believe the bus you refer to is a New Flyer with a Cummins engine they do run older New Flyers with GMC Jimmys. Thanks for your interest. --Gillfoto 22:04, 26 December 2015 (UTC).

The United States contest saw over 1,700 people contribute over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. In addition to National Register of Historic Places sites, we welcomed uploads of sites designated by state- and local-level historical institutions and societies. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate Wikipedia articles!

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States! We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret having to narrow it down to just 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! New Description and deleting Categories[edit]

Hi Gillfoto, thanks for your message on my talk page, and for your gratitude for some of my edits. Re: File:Mountain scenery - Juneau International Airport 3966.jpg, I amended the title of the file because it reflected the parameters of a tiny undiscernible part of the image. Commons policies (eg at Commons:Categories and Commons:Project scope) provide guidance about what files/images are suitable for inclusion here, their names and categories. In this case, the main subject cannot be said to be the aircraft, because that aircraft type of that airline at that location is nowhere near unique (thanks to your other images), and surely no user will be seeking to use that particular image (eg in an article) to illustrate the topic that you have outlined. Strictly speaking, although you control copyright and licensing at time of uploading, the file name and categories are not under your sole control - you have donated the file to Wikimedia Commons, that has its own set of policies, practices and criteria. The choice of file name and categories should reflect the main subject, not small details in the image. I will happily rename the file to better reflect the main subject of the image, which evidently includes Category:Chilkat Range, or some other title you might suggest (but not the aircraft). Sorry to hear of the problem here, it is mistake in the Category. I did not intentional mark it JNU knowing full well that applies to Juneau International Airport. My bad I deleted a Category by accident and not sure how to put it back[edit]

I've been doing some uploading of images, cutting and pasting categories and adding to images unfortunately under main heading for "Gila Bend Overpass"; I deleted the said hyper link which was alongside "Structures on the National Register of Historic Places in Arizona", I believe the category is still there it's just not visible. Centennial Hall[edit]

I have posted a rename request on the erroneously titled "museum" photo. I just wonder how the error occured. Could be a picture switch I suppose, but I wonder if the museum might have used the hall as temporary or overflow quarters? Does your time in Juneau encompass that period? Thanks. I think he/she was a visitor, the museum is across the parking lot. The building that is identified is the City’s concert/exhibition hall with conference rooms, behind is the Alaska State Office building. Pinging @Beeblebrox: , who asked me to comment in the deletion discussion after commenting himself, stating that he hasn't visited downtown Juneau but knew from past discussions that I have. Unfortunately, my last visit to Juneau was to attend the opening of the 20th Legislature, or several months before the photo in question was taken.

Yes, this was taken by a tourist who got a number of details wrong. If necessary, {{Fact disputed}} can be used, or we can attempt to hash it out here. What is now the Alaska State Library and Alaska State Museum were created by mandate of Congress through one of the pre-statehood organic acts. I can't say offhand whether it was the 1900 act which also allowed Juneau to incorporate later that month, or the 1912 act which created the Territory of Alaska. Juneau's municipal government may have played a role in their operation early on, but beginning with the leadership of Father Kashevaroff and later under Ed Keithahn, it was strictly a part of the territorial government until statehood brought about a slight reorganization. The two entities were co-located for most of the middle 20th century in the Federal Building, today's State Capitol building. The Centennial Museum building, recently demolished, was part of an extensive civic improvement program conducted throughout Alaska during the 1960s in conjunction with the centennial celebration of the Alaska Purchase. My memory is foggy, but I believe Centennial Hall wasn't built until the late 1970s or early 1980s, with "Centennial" in that case referring to the centennial of Juneau's founding.

Having said that, Category:Alaska State Museum (Juneau) needs rethinking. As I understand it, the Juneau location effectively is the museum. Their Anchorage location is not really a museum but rather a branch office devoted to a specific purpose. It's unlikely that anyone is going to upload a bunch of photos of that facility. There's also the fact that the Sheldon Jackson Museum was long affiliated with Sheldon Jackson College but in recent years has been part of the state museum system. As free-content photos of that place are out there which have been taken at various times in history spanning both eras, it's not so easy to figure out how to properly categorize that place. It's a lot easier to figure out that the Centennial Museum building and the SLAM building should be categorized separately. There are also enough images related to Centennial Hall to where a category should be created, especially since they have occasionally been placed into Category:Centennial Hall, which refers to a place in Poland.

Really, between all the photos uploaded by Gillfoto and those taken from the Flickr photostream of Joseph from Cabin On The Road, the entire Juneau category structure could use an overhaul. I'll add it to my list. I was either supposed to go to Nuiqsut for a funeral or start a temporary construction job this week. As neither happened, I had time to visit the university and offer my services volunteering for the public radio pledge drive, which gave me enough free time here right this moment to sit down at one of the library computers and play catch up with a few things. Categorization in general on Commons is a horrendous mess, with me having precious little time to fix anything and many of the regulars acting as if they can't be bothered with such bitchwork.

Personal to Gillfoto: thanks for many of your recent uploads. Unfortunately, streetscapes taken outside of tourist zones are in short supply in general in our coverage of Alaska and I really don't know if you've delved too much into that. I've been taking and saving streetscapes of outlying areas of both Anchorage and Fairbanks and am waiting for the time to upload; the queue is currently well into the high hundreds. Anyway, here's a short list of suggestions of some things I feel we could use:

The 3rd Street "main drag" in Douglas
Mike's Place when it was still in operation (I did see a photo of the Pusich family on your Flickr photostream)
The historic block of Front Street in Douglas across from Mayflower School
Street-level photos of Nugget Mall and Mendenhall Mall
Chapel-by-the-Lake (I understand there's now a new church alongside the old church? I may have visited the place after the newer church was built, I really don't remember anymore.)

Oops![edit]

Sorry; didn't mean to create more work. I started collecting my Douglas images and when it came time to upload I noticed there wasn't a Category for my Douglas. I referred to Wikipedia and noticed that it is referenced in a unique fashion as 'Douglas, Juneau', well seemed like a great idea. So I decided to figure out how to create category, uploaded a bunch of photos then by chance in my work through a duplicate submission I found that there already was a Douglas type Category i.e. 'Douglas Island', where there were already a few photos with a sub-category. So either 'Juneau, Douglas' should be listed as Sub-category or Douglas Island, either way I'm not sure how to go about this. Creating a Sub-category is a bit of a dark science for me; I've researched but have be unable to figure out how it created, any help would be appreciated. Gillfoto 17:33, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Category classification is one-way[edit]

I'm really glad you are bringing your local knowledge to SE Alaska categories. However categories should not loop or reflect. IE Petersburg, Alaska should not be a category of Buildings in Petersburg Alaska, and City and Borough of Alaska should not be a category of Auke Bay. September 30th is the last day to upload photos for Wiki Loves Monuments! We're thrilled that the United States has almost reached 4,000 contributions so far this year. Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations.

Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first).

We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website.

The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December.

Categories[edit]

Just wanted to say that your approach to creating categories, which appears to consist of adding a single perfunctory parent category instead of more fully integrating the categories into the category tree, is problematic. What you're doing is creating walled gardens of categorization. Resultantly, the experience most people will have with finding your work on here by browsing categories will be one of stumbling upon it by accident. At least that's certainly been the case with me. I've corrected some of these already, but I haven't had anywhere near the amount of time needed to deal with all of them.RadioKAOS (talk) 05:36, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Two painted churches on the Big Island[edit]

Aloha Kenneth, I found your beautiful pictures of St. Benedict's Catholic Church (Honaunau, Hawaii), but the camera location pointed near the Star of the Sea Painted Church, and some of the files therefore were named wrong (Kalapana). However, I corrected as much as I could, but didn't want to delete the camera location template, because you might know how it happened and might want to correct it yourself. Overcategorisation[edit]

After creating a list of categories for each file, please have a quick look for any obvious overcategorisation.

For example, all your recent uploads of climate change protests are in both Global warming and its parent category, Climate change. Keep Alaska Cold 137.jpg is also in the Climate change subcategory 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference. Worst of all, Climate Emergency gf143.jpg is in Climate, as well as Climate change and Global warming. Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photography contest hosted on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore and intangible cultural heritage from around the world, such as folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folktales, folk games, folk religion, mythology, and many more.

The campaign invites participants to document photographs, videos, and audios linked to folk culture and fit within the contest's theme. Through this campaign, you may become a part of a community dedicated to preserving our intangible culture, which has been brought and passed down for thousands of years.

How to Contribute?

The dates for the submission in the photography contest on Wikimedia Commons are from 1 February to 31 March 2023. Probably you are wondering how you can take part. It’s simple: grab a camera, record an image, video or audio under the folklore theme and start uploading ! To learn more about the rules, check out our Project page on Wikimedia Common. Here are the exciting prizes which you can win internationally.

Hello! In 2021, you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Thanks to people like you, it was a great success with over 500 people contributing over 5,500 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. Hello Kevin, it's been a while; hope life is good. I am currently in Riverside County, California therefore I checked the list ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Riverside_County,_California )for that area and to my surprise I found that the City/Town of Riverside is included in error.
