Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Eartham Church plaque

Hi there. I've been reading and reviewing en:Opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, and went from there to en:William Huskisson, and from there to Category:William Huskisson, and I noticed that you took the following two pictures in Eartham: File:Eartham Church 14.JPG and File:Eartham Church 15.JPG. Neither of those are directly to do with the William Huskisson that I've been reading about (one is his wife, the other is for a grandson of Huskisson's wife's sister). If you have the chance to go back to this church at some point, I was wondering if you would be able to get a photo of the plaque described here? "(Behind the organ) William Huskisson (d1830) who lived in the parish. He was a statesman and the first man in England to be killed in a rail accident. A plain tablet with a lengthy inscription." Not sure whether "behind the organ" means it is not very accessible (it might be the one on the left in this picture), but I've been searching for a picture of it without success, so thought I'd ask you (I can get to the place myself, but thought I'd ask you first). Hi Carcharoth. I think I remember the inscription you refer to but I cannot find any photo of it. Light conditions were difficult when I was there as they often are inside churches. Got to Eartham today and found the inscription tucked in a dark corner left of the organ. The church has thoughtfully provided a light operated by PIR which comes on as you get close and causes a dreadful glare! Once we had found how to switch off the light I got some decent photos. Many thanks for this! It was nice to be able to read what Emily had written in memory of her husband. I take pictures of things like this fairly often, and it is annoying that it is often necessary to take the pictures at an angle, or without a flash. The Milbanke memorial is nice. I may add some of those to articles on en-Wikipedia if not already added, if you don't mind me jumping in there. I'll definitely add the Huskisson one, and many thanks again for taking that picture and uploading it. Not sure what you mean by the "quarters". Uploading to Commons

Hi, Charles. I also enjoy uploading photos that I've made with my Fuji XF1 digital camera, but so far I've had no luck on Wikimedia Commons. My pictures on Wikipedia have almost exclusively been uploaded through Wikipedia's "File Upload Wizard." What can I do to ensure that I successfully upload to Commons? I have so far tried to do so, following all the required steps, but with no success. Any advice? Davidbena (talk) 18:27, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

I really do not know. I have never had any problems with the upload wizard. I can only refer you to the Help centre or community portal links in the margin.Charlesdrakew (talk) 20:55, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
