Adding HEIC format images to commons

Hi, I've found out that we can't add images in .HEIC format to commons. It is a widely used format for iPhones for higher efficiency. Recently I've took many images on my mobile but sadly can't upload anyone due to format restrictions. Why can't commons support this format?--IM3847 (talk) 04:36, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

@IM3847: w:High Efficiency Image File Format, container with generally patented formats inside. And the patents have not expired yet. So not an open format. You need to convert your images to .jpg or .webp before uploading. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 05:01, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
The Wikimedia Commons app may be able to convert them. I don't know, never tried that myself. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 05:04, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
I've tried to convert them online, but they're loosing sensitive data like location, date while doing so.--IM3847 (talk) 05:13, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

How to get rid of "Category:Objects with inscriptions in German needing translation"?

I have added an English translation to ESA Tafel Hugo Brehme

ESA Tafel Hugo Brehme

but I am not sure I did it technically right. I am not familiar enough with all the code that is used. Could please somebody with more experiance look into it and correct it? For instance, how can I get rid of the "Category:Objects with inscriptions in German needing translation"? JopkeB (talk) 20:00, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

@JopkeB: I believe I’ve fixed it. See the documentation at {{Inscription}}, which wants the translated text to be in a field named with the language code rather than an additional instance of the template.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:46, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: Thanks for the fixing and the explanation. I see now that I should have written the English version in the template, not after. JopkeB (talk) 17:31, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

Croptool didn't?

Can someone take a look here and see what happened? I cropped the image down to remove most of the building on the left and the pole on the right. Yet the "after" version is identical to the original from what I see. Maury Markowitz (talk) 19:57, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

@Maury Markowitz: , usually it takes some time for an overwritten image to show the new version if you've already seen the image before (probably due to some cookies), because at my part I do see the improved crop, you probably should just reload the page after 30 (thirty) seconds and it should show the cropped version. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:10, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
Two things you should always try when this happens. Purge the server's cache by appending ?action=purge to the end of the URL (see Help:Purge for more information). If that doesn't work reload your cache by holding down your control key and pressing F5 (this should work with most browsers but alternatives such as holding shift when clicking the reload key may need to be tried). If those two things don't update the image then there is a further issue that needs to be brought up. --Majora (talk) 23:04, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
Sometimes the servers do get behind, such that purges don’t seem to do anything for a while. This usually clears up within a day or two, but in the meantime I suggest the following: on any page, open an edit window and add the image, using an ‘odd’ thumbnail size that’s not among the defaults shown on the file page. Preview the edit to verify that the thumbnail is based on the updated file, then close without saving. This won’t make the file page update any sooner, but can provide some reassurance that the upload was successful.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:42, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
@Maury Markowitz: You appear to be describing a problem with caching or purging, please see en:WP:BYPASS, Help:Purge, and en:WP:PURGE for more information.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 08:10, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
The image updated the next day. This affected both my home and work machines. I didn't check on my phone. Maury Markowitz (talk) 13:32, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

Upload stash failed

Hi, Anyone run into issues while doing chunked uploads today? See phab:T200820#4826332. Regards, Yann (talk) 11:39, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

SVG previews failed

I made File:Pullman logo 2013.svg with https://www.aconvert.com , but the previews aint look right. Do they look plain white on your computers?

How best should I do to convert a simple text logo like this, if I want to use a web-based and free converter? (I have read help:svg and tried autotracer which didn't render a correct svg.) Any suggestion would be great. Thanks!--Roy17 (talk) 03:58, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

Bulk rename for 51 files

I just uploaded 51 audio files with Lingua Libre. I accidentally chose "Dutch" instead of "Esperanto", and now all those audio files have the wrong language ID and code in the title.

I am not sure where to request a bulk rename, that's why I try it here. Can somebody change "Q7411_(nld)" to "Q143_(epo)" for the following list of files:

Rename Template:PD-1923 - used ~400,000 times

{{PD-1923}} becomes problematic on 1 January 2019 because its name refers to a United States law which applies differently after that date. In January 2019 this template should report that media before 1924 is public domain, and thereafter the year updates yearly.

There is still some discussion about what the name should be because renaming 400k templates is a big hassle. However, I wanted to post now to see if anyone could offer technical suggestions about how to do the rename or if anyone could actually execute this task.

Please comment at this existing discussion which links to the other discussions.

Thanks Blue Rasberry (talk) 02:49, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

Would it not be easier to just create a new template and redirect the {{PD-1923}} one to whatever the new one is named? --Majora (talk) 03:03, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
This seems reasonable. The benefit is 1 edit rather than 400,000. The drawback is leaving the 1923 tag in the wikicode of 400,000 files, but almost no one would ever see that. Thoughts from others? Blue Rasberry (talk) 03:23, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
It's way more, {{PD-old-70-1923}} and {{PD-old-100-1923}} are good for a million uses each. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 03:36, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Yeah...and to change all of those in the code just so "1923" doesn't show up when editing seems like extreme overkill. Provided the rendered template is correct and doesn't show "1923" I don't see why we shouldn't just redirect the old ones, put {{Deprecated}} on the template information page, and move on. If we really want to be extra through we could always put in a temporary edit filter that warns people to use the new template when doing it manually and change the options on the upload wizard so you can't select the 1923 versions anymore. --Majora (talk) 03:44, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Agreed, let's just redirect the templates. Also, why is this conversation happening on 3 different pages simultaneously? Kaldari (talk) 18:38, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
@Kaldari: Wiki protocol is to provide a link and make a request that all conversation happens centrally, but then everyone has the conversation simultaneously everywhere. Everything links to everything else so it is okay. For anyone who wishes - most conversation is at Commons_talk:Public_Domain_Day#Technical_execution_of_the_rename. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:55, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
I would actually support soft-deprecation. New law says that things before 1924 are PD, but before 1923 is also before 1923, it just just a historical special case. We simply create a new template, and begin using that, no reason to panic about the old template, because it is still not misleading for those files, they will not stop being public domain after 1st of January, everything will be ok. Eventually the old template will be used less and less and then it can be easily removed and appropriate edits done. Happy festivities, everybody! ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 10:55, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

file contains HTML or script code

I had this error while using flickr2commons, for images like https://www.flickr.com/photos/tinto/31324237780/ . What should I do in this case?

  1. Is there a tool that ignores this problem and upload images? (If no, or such images are indeed undesirable, then suppose I have downloaded the photos:)
  2. How do I remove the problematic embedded codes?
  3. Should I strip off the entire EXIF?

This problem might need urgent assistance, because Flickr is nuking non-Pro users' on 5 Feb. This user in question has 4.3k images and no Pro. :( If I manually transfer, licence review has to be done within a month. I don't know if there are other Flickr users' works that have the same problem.--Roy17 (talk) 20:55, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

@Roy17: Commons:Village pump/Archive/2018/11#Flickr will not delete CC photos - Alexis Jazz ping plz 21:54, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Thanks a lot!!! Had I known this I would not be so stressed :D --Roy17 (talk) 21:59, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Roy17: any specific albums you really want? (easier to start with than 4000 photos) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:05, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
No. I was just transferring five from that user. I asked because I did not find any instruction on this problem of codes embedded in EXIF. I suppose other users have had the same problem and it will happen again in future.--Roy17 (talk) 23:11, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Eurostat license tag needs updating

Hi, the Eurostat license tag {{Attribution-Eurostat}} could do with updating as its link to the Eurostat website that covers licensing of Eurostat works is broken. I think this is the right link Eurostat Copyright/licence policy, which is that all EU publications are freely usable (also covered here by the EU Commission's source website with link to the source EU decision document regarding use of EU works ( Commission Decision 12 December 2011: (2011/833/EU)), provided attribution is granted. I think the other EU tags, such as {{European Union law}}, which links to EU legal documents (it links to the EU Lex database for its copyright conditions), could be cleaned up and made clear that they are all feeding off the same EU Commission Decision regarding all EU works. Given the vast scale of EU publications, wouldn't it be a good idea to do this (even add to the upload wizard)? thanks. Britishfinance (talk) 11:31, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

I worked out how to fix the broken link and update the wording of the Eurostat license tag. However, I do think that the huge database of EU Commission media files (of which Eurostat is one small part), which are available freely, should be included into the Upload Wizard (just like with U.S. Government files)? Britishfinance (talk) 10:46, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
I can see that there are a large number of files on Wikicommons that have "Eurostat" in their filename but where the users attribute the work to themselves; it would be more stable if users realised that Eurostat data does not need to be re-created, but can be uploaded directly to Wikicommons under the {{Attribution-Eurostat}} tag? flipping images

Is there a commons tool or one from wmflabs that I could use to flip images left to right? File:China1982-626.jpg and File:China1982-175.jpg are currently inverted and should be flipped once. If there is not one, how should I do this in order to minimise damage to the files?--Roy17 (talk) 11:30, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

@Roy17: Hi, I don't think there is any tool. In this case, you can upload over the old files. Please document why you think they are flipped. Regards, Yann (talk) 11:33, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

Licensing template for Irish OS Maps

Hi, the UK Ordnance Survey offers many of its OS maps under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Licence (OpenData) and an editor Multichill helpfully created a copyright/licensing tag template in 2010 for this on Wikicommons called: {{OS OpenData}}. Can I create a similar template for the Irish Ordnance Survey Ireland who have followed the UK OS and also offer OpenData licensing for many of its OS maps Irish OSi OpenData Policy. I looked at the code in the OS OpenData template but it doesn't look like the type of stuff that ordinary WP editors (like me) should be doing? The OSi have a huge database of Irish OS Maps so I think this is worth doing. Is this licensing template something that Wikicommons can do, and if so, who could do it? thanks. Britishfinance (talk) 10:04, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Where is specific technical problem? Britishfinance has a dozen edits in the Template: space with some basic understanding of the code seemingly, hence cloning of the template IMHO could be, at least, attempted. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:13, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
@Incnis Mrsi: When I got no response earlier, I decided to have a go at creating and editing license tag templates starting with an easier one (that seemed to have worked - see below). Will try the Irish OS tag next!. thanks. Britishfinance (talk) 16:18, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
