However, since that time, I have made some improvements to my PNG optimization procedures that often produce better results on images that contain transparency. As a result, by backing up to the original version of this file and re-optimizing it using my updated procedures, I have managed to squeeze it down to 511 KB. Are you sure you've found the correct "original" image? The image you want to overwrite with is not just a larger resolution version of File:Kiki the Cyber Squirrel mascot of Krita version 2.8 Splash.png as the current image is cropped differently and has text in the lower right corner that is not present in your image. The image you want to overwrite with appears identical in size and content to already uploaded File:Kiki the Cyber Squirrel mascot of Krita version 2.8 Splash.webp. First, I am the original uploader of this file so I am not sure why I am not allowed to overwrite it. I have done it before in the past, see the file's history. Second, is this a new restriction on every file? I have been able to overwrite files I was not the original uploader of in the past. Or is this a new restriction attached only to some files, since two people made updates to it since my last update, maybe one of them added this restriction? The map does not reflect Russia's borders, neither the de jure situation (Crimea not being Russian) nor the de facto situation (Crimea and part of the Donbass being Russian). I have an updated version that reflects Russia's internationally recognised borders on the map. This is consistent with other maps e.g. Taiwan on Chinese provincial maps. @Cortador: This was created in 2015, so that was the de facto situation then. I'd ask the uploader if they'd approve changes but they last made a contribution in 2022. I might need to think about this one, the file name doesn't suggest that it's the state of things in 2015, and going to de jure would be a contentious change. The user does own the copyright to this interpretation of the Vatican's coat of arms, but as you say, the round part of the silver key is slightly off. • I have created those two files as a Request from Veverve and he provided me with two sources (as stated on the files information pages), Allegato A and Allegato B.
• When I do graphic work like this it's always an interpretation of the source, it will never be an exact copy. You can always have discussions about minor stuff and I'm always willing to discuss and change what is wrong, but here I can't see it.
• The Requester Veverve has approved my work before they were uploaded and that user is kind of my customer and when the customer is satisfied I am.
• Ones I have uploaded my work to commons I do not have any copyright anymore, in this case they are released under Public Domain, and I hope that is respected.
• To show respect for the Requester Veverve and myself as a Graphic Worker at wikimedia I do hope that you choose to upload a New File/Version and not overwrite the existing approved files, if you think something is wrong with them or you think they should be improved in any way.

I have been pinged and I am the one who requested this image be done, so here is my opinion: I have read the conversation and I do not understand what Sariyr claims is the problem, I am genuinely unable to represent visually in my head what the alleged problem is. I have been working on this file for a couple of years now, whenever I can find some time. The file needed major corrections due to it being a hybrid map of natural vegetation, current land cover and ecozones when the title and description says vegetation. My last edit was in September 2023, but I guess some protocols about editing files changed since then. Therefore I would like to ask for permission to overwrite this file, so that I can upload the latest version of corrections I have been working on since my last edit.

As the file description says it is hand drawn using maps. This last version mostly involves montane, savanna and arid region corrections and as a perfectionist I have used perhaps over a hundred sources, but the following ones are the major ones involving the latest changes:

This image is currently stored as 48-bits-per-pixel RGB. It's 48 bits per pixel instead of the standard 24 for RGB because each channel is encoded as high-precision 16-bit integer data. However, the choice of the high-precision RGB mode is rather dumb, because the image is entirely composed of shades of gray. I have losslessly reduced the image to 16-bits-per-pixel high-precision Grayscale mode, which produces a completely identical image with a filesize of just 991 KB. My reasoning being the Axumite's didn't control that much land in inland Ethiopia and had more territory in southern Arabia than is currently shown. I can go into more detail on the map's talk page. Yes. The Axumites did not control that much of inland Ethiopia, althoght it was definately in their sphere of influence. The farthest south the armies of Ezana are known to have gone is the Simien mountains south of the Tekeze. Later, they would change their capitol to a certain "Kubar" which is probably in N. Wello of the Amhara region. Likewise; cthe first Negus to conquer part of southern Arabia for Axum was "GDRT," who ruled much of western Yemen, such as the Tihāmah, Najrā, Maʿafir, Ẓafār (until c. 230), and parts of Hashid territory around Hamir in the northern highlands. This means they controlled much more of Yemens northern highlands than what was previously shown and I have changed the file to reflect that. All of this is mentioned in the kingdoms Wiki page itself, for example: Kaleb gained widespread acclaim in his era as the conqueror of Yemen. He expanded his royal title to include king of Hadramawt in southeastern Yemen, as well as the coastal plain and highland of Yemen, along with "all their Arabs", highlighting the extensive influence of Aksum across the Red Sea into Arabia. Abraha would later famously attack Mecca prior to the birth of Muhammed in the "Year of the Elepahnt." Practically every other map of Axum such as File:Aksumite empire.svg, File:GDRTHornR2.png, File:Kingdom of Axum blue.png, and File:LocationAksumiteEmpire.png and all historical evidence backs it up. The current map is good because it shows Axum at it's greatest extent (under Saint Kaleb) which is why it's the most used but it doesn't have the correct boundries. Axum was principally a red-sea based state unlike successive Ethiopian monarchies that were based further inland due to Muslim domination of Southern Arabia, and it's heartland was in the corridor between the city of Axum itself and their principle port of Adulis (near modern-day Massawa) also known as the "land of Ag'azi"(Ge'ez speakers) MotorolaBoy (talk) 04:49, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

@Frédéric-FR: These images appear to accurately reflect the uploaded scan of Just So Stories at File:Just so stories (c1912).djvu. When you say "I have created correct versions of both" do you mean that: (1) you tracked down and scanned a different copy of the same edition and printing of Just So Stories, or (2) your images are from a different edition or printing of Just So Stories, or (3) you've modified the images to reflect what you believe was intended by Rudyard Kipling? Actually, I started working on this while correcting the French version of Just So Stories on Wikisource. It so happens that in the French edition, the illustration numbers were corrected (the wrong "8" was renamed "18" and the missing "19" was put back into place). But when the first French contributor created the transcribed version, they simply took the illustrations from the original English version, where the mistakes are… So I'm not really sure what to do. It's a choice between remaining perfectly consistent with the original versions, both in English and in French, and deciding to simply correct what is obviously a insignificant editor's mistake. @Abzeronow and TaionWC: These files were inappropriately overwritten and should all be reverted. The previous versions comprised a set that were all carefully cropped to the artwork. The new versions are different and show the entire cards (plus some background). For example, compare old to new. As explained at Commons:Overwriting existing files, such substantial changes are not appropriate for overwrites and should be uploaded as new files instead. I can obviously provide cropped versions, but whether these images should be cropped or not is a matter of opinion. I would have thought these items were supposed to be faithful digital reproductions of the original artwork. The border is part of the layout of the card: that is how the artist designed it. It didn't appear there by happenstance. Anyway, I can start working on cropped versions, if there really is consensus for this position. Who decides on such matters?

The thin black border surrounding the artwork proper is not perfectly straight, which makes sense since it is hand-drawn. In my opinion, this precludes cropping the image: one is faced with the choice of either leaving a thin but noticeably uneven white border in place (which is certainly not better than the status quo), or cropping part of the black border or the artwork proper, which would leave the image with an uneven black border instead. I already experimented with this, and the results are unsatisfactory. By the way, any kind of cropping involves rotating the image slightly, which in turn requires interpolation, which is a lossy procedure made worse for JPEG images since it involves decompressing the image and recompressing it. @TaionWC: No, please don't crop your images. What I am saying is that your images are different from the ones you replaced. On Commons, we only overwrite files if they are identical to what is being replaced, but better. If you look at Category:Mona Lisa for example, you will see at least 38 slightly different images of the Mona Lisa. An example more similar to this case is Category:Sallie Gardner at a Gallop. This principle also applies to crops. For example, we have File:Saturn during Equinox.jpg, File:Saturn during Equinox (cropped).jpg, and File:Saturn closeup.jpg. This allows users to choose whatever version suites their needs. In this case, someone may want an image of the Hermit that is cropped to the artwork (but not care about the resolution) and someone else may want an image of the full card in high resolution. Both should be available. This is why we strongly discourage overwriting files and typically do not allow new users to do so. I hope that makes sense. Would you object to me reverting the affected files so that you can re-upload your versions as separate files? I understand your argument that this was technically a breaking change (and I will certainly keep this in mind in the future). On the other hand, I have double-checked the wikis where these images are used and none of them require the cropped artwork specifically. Unless I am prohibited from manually changing the uses of these images to the uncropped, higher-resolution versions, then it seems like a technicality to revert these changes, considering the change to the image was unintrusive and actually aligns Wikipedia with the status quo among other online sources of Tarot cards, that virtually never have cropped margins on their card scans, such as World of Playing Cards.

In fact, looking into this some more, none of the Tarot cards hosted on Wikimedia have cropped margins either:

Pigugno Tarot 1JJ - Jupiter Jean Dodal Tarot trump Fool Tarot Piedmont 0 The Fool, from Vergnano Tarot Bonifacio Bembo 17 La Mort - Etteilla Tarot 1890. The same is true for other playing cards. It is difficult to say why these Rider–Waite–Smith card scans should have cropped margins, to the exception of all others. In this sense, the cropping of the original image was quite contentious. Of course, this does not preclude anyone from uploading a cropped version, but logically these primary (and only) Rider–Waite–Smith card scans on Wikimedia should be uncropped for consistency.

For all of the reasons mentioned above, I strongly prefer these items to be uncropped. I am not in a position to stop you or anyone else from reverting my changes. TaionWC (talk) 06:27, 7 April 2024 (UTC)

I must reiterate my stance that these files should be uncropped. I stated my case previously but in an effort to fully absolve myself of wrongdoing, perhaps I should mention: minor cropping is listed under DO overwrite.

Well, it should go without saying that this change falls under minor cropping since the composition of the image barely changes, but this change really should be maximally noncontroversial because as already mentioned: it restores the status quo among all other tarot cards on Wikipedia, all other playing cards on Wikipedia, virtually all other online sources of the Rider–Waite–Smith tarot cards, and other online sources of tarot cards in general—that do not have cropped margins. I believe it could be because the file is originally designed in Microsoft Excel, and while the uploader is aware of how to turn a .xlsx file into a .pdf, they aren't aware of how to turn a .pdf into a .svg. The buttons have a gradient with made with 3 distinct colors. The inside 2 colors are currently more of an orange-yellow than the outside orange color. I'd like to make this less yellow, as it is a little close to the yellow button. The orange could be a little closer to red. . The hue (from 0 to 360) for red is 0. For yellow it's 60. For the orange button as it currently is, the outer orange has a hue of 32, while the middle and center colors have a hue of 40. I'm changing the middle two to be 32. For future reference, "I have one that is higher resolution" is not sufficient reason to overwrite an SVG. As vector graphics can be scaled up and down without pixelation, and can be rendered at any desired resolution, the only valid criteria for overwriting an SVG is if the new version contains new, different, or improved shape data. In this case, the version uploaded by VenezuelanSpongeBobFan2004 was definitely a downgrade, as it removed shape data present in the previous version (the text TM at the bottom).
