Freely redistributable without modification

Is it OK to upload the screenshot to Commons if the screenshot is showing GPLv2-covered free software in process of handling a somewhat lesser free book? I mean, the book in question (and the very article in question) are labeled at the publisher's website as "freely redistributable without modification". I've searched the Commons for the answer, but found contradicting statements on the matter. The Commons:Licensing#Acceptable_licenses says that "Publication of derivative work must be allowed". This seems to exclude such material. But Commons:FAQ#What_licenses_do_the_files_I_upload_have_to_use.3F seems to allow the simple CC-BY license, which, as far as I know, do NOT permit modification.

So, is it acceptable to upload a screenshot showing a few pages from this book to Commons?

Publication of derivative works must be allowed, which indeed excludes works that may only be redistributed without modification. {{Cc-by}} explicitly permits modification ("to create and reproduce Derivative Works"). "Bob and Hillary in simpler times"

I see no reason to think that it has. As stated in the site's FAQ, permission to reproduce copyrighted materials contained in the audiovisual or textual holdings of the Clinton Presidential Library must be obtained from the copyright holder. —LX (talk, contribs) 22:35, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Asked for help on WWII-era Nazi pictures by another user

Hi,

I have been asked for advice on pictures by another user.

I have in my possetion two German books printed in Berlin 1940 and 1941, they are called "die Wehrmacht 1940" (covering "the war year" 1939-40) and a simular of the following year. These were actually sold in Sweden (untranslated) during the first years of thewar.

Question is if f.i. a picture with (only) Hitler and Walther von Brauchitsch looking at some maps can be upoaded. And in this case the German text would be of sourceful use. It simply states "Die Oberste Befehlshaber der Wehrmacht mit dem Oberbefehlshaber des Heeres Gerneralfeldmarschall von Brauchitsch". Or something like "The Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces (die Wehrmacht) with the Supreme Commander of |the Army/all Armies| Fieldmarshal von Brauchitsch.

So my question is, can this picture be uploaded with or without it's German text.(if at all) ? And what about photos of the books frontsides? (Originally posted by Boeing720 at Ubcule's talk page)

German/Swedish books are in copyright for 70 years from the author/photographer's death. In Germany, that applies even if the photographer is anonymous ({{Anonymous-EU}}). It's also likely they're in copyright in the US, too.--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:25, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

I think we need more information about the author and publisher of the book. The current rules may or may not apply to WWII-era German publications. I remember seeing someone say that materials published under Nazi Germany were considered public domain in the US. So the first question is whether or not this is true, and the second is whether or not this book was a Nazi government publication or something done by a private party (because that might make a difference, assuming that the assertion is true in the first place). This related news article suggests that anything published before 1942 might be public domain now under German law, but presumably that's only for corporate works rather than single-author works (the difference between 70 years and 70 years after the author's death). Well it's two books (annual 1940, covering 1.Sept 1939 until summer of 1940 and the fall of France, 1941 covering Battle of Britain and the beginning of the war in USSR) written and printed by the former German Wehrmacht, that replaced the Reichswehr aaround 1934 or 1935. "Wehrmacht" was the entire armed forces of Nazigermany. They are to be concidered as war-time propaganda (but not really nazi-political stuff.) Made by "Verlag die Wehrmacht Berlin". It seems to me that the photographers worked for the Wehrmacht. No photos are given any credit to the photographers. The stories are sometimes written by some leftenant or other officers (named). Other text are not signed in any way. But it's only about certain photos, and their text, in at least one case. (text under the photos). It's difficult to be more presisive than this. Size is a rather common one. A6 perhaps. Around 300 pages. The Wehrmacht kapitulated at 7. May 1945, but these books are some years older. I recon finding any other author than the former Wehrmacht is impossible as of today. Certain photos are of great value, I find. Like a picture of Hitler (who only appears in very few photos) and his supreme commanderof all German armies until the first defeat close to Moscow, december 1941, Field Marshal Walther von Brauchitsch looking down at some maps. The text do state the official (?, or some kind of) relationship of Hitler towards von Brauchitsch,before Hitler also became supreme commander of the German armies. There is absolutly no other stated author or publisher than "Verlag die Wehrmacht Berlin" Boeing720 (talk) 23:41, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Had a look at the link You provided. This is completely different. It is not a question of reprint, nore are there any specific relation to the BRD-republic of Bavaria. That the US would have the copyright, when Berlin was taken by the Russians (and later splitted between France, the UK, US and USSR) stands to little reason. And it is not political "only" military stuff. No offensive photos (certain texts to some of the phothos, like calling the British for "Tommies" exists though, but is not was I had in mind of uploading) The photos are pictures of German soldiers and officers, often in combat situations.Of very little interest. But atleast the "Hitler& von Brauchitsch looking down on maps" -picture is of great interest, I think. Boeing720 (talk) 23:56, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Prosfilaes "In Germany, that applies even if the photographer is anonymous" - does it? The template you point to, makes it clear that any image or text would no longer be copyright "70 years after the work was made available to the public and the author never disclosed their identity", rather than after the anonymous person's death. I think I'm missing something in the rationale here, and as I have personally uploaded quite a few thousand WWII period photographs, could you point to the right bit of Commons policy or guidelines, or confirm that I am misreading what you intended to say? The template says "In Germany and possibly other countries, certain anonymous works published before July 1, 1995 are copyrighted until 70 years after the death of the author. Ah, thanks. I think this is a misinterpretation as the full text makes it clear that there is only a concern if the anonymous author has identified themselves (thereby becoming non-anonymous). I can imagine this applying for WWII photos that were not associated with a named photographer at the time, but decades later, someone might come forward, or be identified with the work after their deaths. There are wrinkles in this, for example it may be *possible* but not guaranteed that a photograph could be researched an analysed sufficiently to work out who is likely to have taken a previously anonymous photo, it is unclear if Commons should host a photo where such a possibility exists but has yet to happen. I suggest these sorts of wrinkles are raised elsewhere and when needed though, it's a bit of a diversion to the original topic here. Thanks Fæ (talk) 10:35, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

It's my belief that photos, text, and other normally copyrighted materials, created for and published by the German Wehrmacht (the German Army under the Nazis), are in the public domain as far as the US and UK are concerned, because the Allied powers voided their copyrights. It's my belief that the story would be different if you were talking about individual people (e.g., an independent newspaper or an author of a work of fiction), but actual Nazi government publications seem to be public domain. However, based on comments at Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Surreydocks1941.jpg, it's possible that these are not considered public domain in Germany, and PD status in the country of origin is (I believe, but haven't double-checked) required for Commons, not just in the US. I haven't found any information about Sweden's view of Nazi copyrights; I'm not sure that Sweden would really be the country of origin anyway. WhatamIdoing (talk) 04:06, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

(Wehrmacht was the namefor all armedforces, but beside the point). As I understant it the photographers were low lanked officers. Have You ever seen the German film "das Boot", by the way. About a German u-boat (submarine) and it's crew. Onboard is a photographer with officer rank. I guess that the pictures in these books also were f.i. sergeants or leftenants and that they were a part of the Wehrmacht. I cannot find any clues in the books that contradicts this assumption. I've never seen the movie, but I understand that the Nazis had whole units that did nothing except document military activities. The question is whether it meets the Commons policy standard: "Uploads of non-U.S. works are normally allowed only if the work is either in the public domain or covered by a valid free license in both the U.S. and the country of origin of the work." To clearify - the two Wehrmacht annual books are in German, but were actually sold in Sweden during the beginning of the war. However I fail to see how any BRD copyright can exist. The photograpers didn't own the pictures, that did the armed forces ("die Wehrmacht" in German). So any German copyright must in such case belong to this no longer existing military force. In any case the Wehrmacht "died" 7.May 1945. Perhaps shall I wait uploading any photo until 7.May 2015, 70 years after the death of "Wehrmacht" ? What matters is where the book was published, not where it was sold. In this case, it appears to have been published in Germany, not in Sweden.

Copyrights do not cease existing when an organization disbands. In the USA and UK, there is no copyright at all on these because the Nazi government copyrights were explicitly voided in special laws. In Germany, I believe that it would follow the same rules as anything else published at the time (e.g., an advertisement or newspaper), which is usually 70 years after publication for things created by a group or a person whose identity has never been disclosed, not 70 years after the group disbands. In other words, if the book is 72 years old, it's probably okay now. (But all things Nazi are weird under German law, and it's possible that there is some special, extended copyright term for Nazi government works.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:36, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

That's caused by WienWiki running on a Windows machine and not having a "locale" set. (I don't think the "locale" can be set to UTF-8 for the file system on Windows at all; at least I hadn't found any way to do so last time I looked on Win XP.) Windows doesn't use UTF-8 as its file system character encoding, but some other character encoding. Hence the windows machine stores the file not where php expects it (under D:\Webs\mediawiki-live\WIENWIKI\images\thumb\8\85\Eröffnung-Donauregulierung-1875.jpg\800px-Eröffnung-Donauregulierung-1875.jpg) but mangles all the non-ASCII characters. In this case, "ö" is mangled. The thumbnail is there on WienWiki, but under the URL http://wienwiki.wienerzeitung.at/WIENWIKI/images/thumb/8/85/Er%C3%83%C2%B6ffnung-Donauregulierung-1875.jpg/800px-Er%C3%83%C2%B6ffnung-Donauregulierung-1875.jpg, while it should be at http://wienwiki.wienerzeitung.at/WIENWIKI/images/thumb/8/85/Er%C3%B6ffnung-Donauregulierung-1875.jpg/800px-Er%C3%B6ffnung-Donauregulierung-1875.jpg. Uploading my company's logo

Hi there,

I am in the process of revising my company's (Infortrend) wiki page and would like to upload our logo. However, I just created a Wikipedia account today and do not have the ability to upload an image yet. Photo file given provided to me with permission (Verbal) to put on Wikimedia Commons

I went to photographer's house. He gave me file of picture (of an insect) that he took - provided on CD for me. He is in 80's. He gave verbal permission to put on Wikimedia. • By "verbal" I assume you mean "oral" as against "written". I don't believe it's possible in the US to release copyright orally, but maybe I'm mistaken. Thanks for answer. Is there a way to provide permission without the original photographer sending an email as this would be difficult. He in fact asked me if I wanted him to sign a release, etc. I can follow up. Could I ask him to fill out a printed copy of the form that is required and specify a license,etc. Would there be a way to upload a scanned version or in some other way get the form on file?

I havent had aanything to do with this template since the Day of the Dead photo contest done by my school. • I'm not at all sure what article you are talking about, but there are not supposed to be any articles in Wikimedia Commons and that itself would be sufficient reason to delete it from this site. Wikimedia Commons is a media repository (images, sound files, video). If you were trying to add it to some other site, you'd have to take this up with them. - Jmabel ! talk 14:59, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
• Do not try to write an article at User talk:3variables. Try putting the article at en:Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/3 Variables (三变数) (in English) or at w:zh:三变数 (in Chinese). Do not violate anyone's copyrights when you upload images to Commons or write sentences at Wikipedia. Write in your own words, without copying anyone else's words. Photo of newspaper article retrieved from public library.

There is a factual inaccuracy on the OR Tambo International Airport page and the author is adamant that he is correct. The incorrect information is in conflict with the correct information on the Palmietfontein Airport page, which I created. I went to the Johannesburg library today and they allowed me to photograph the original copy of the newspaper article (I had to pay a fee) which proves that my information is correct, and that the information on the OR Tambo International Airport page is incorrect. I would like to upload the photo into Commons (with credit to the newspaper) and place it in the Palmietfontein Airport page. I am not sure if there will be any copyright issues, however I don't believe that there will be any. The article concerns the airport at which the first Comet aircraft landed on May 3, 1952, and the article is from that date. Per Commons:Copyright rules by territory#South Africa a photograph published in 1952 in South Africa is in public domain and can be hosted in Commons. Use {{PD-South-Africa}} license tag. MKFI (talk) 13:33, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

It would have needed to be public domain in South Africa at the URAA cut-off date (1996). In 1996, as now, the copyright duration in South Africa was 50 years. This means that only photographs from before 1946 were certainly public domain then. A 1952 photo might therefore still be copyrighted in the US. --rimshot^talk 20:31, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

At en.wiki, a reader pointed out that this audio file includes antisemitic graphics beginning at the 28th second. I don't have the slightest clue how to replace the file, or (if possible) remove the graphics and keep the audio. I was hoping that somebody with some expertise in ogg files might be able to help. How to properly license photo?

Hi, I've received a notice regarding a photo I uploaded to the page for "Theresa Schwegel" (author). I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out the correct license when I uploaded it, but couldn't quite home in on what I needed to do. The photo was provided to me by the author and uploaded at her request; she definitely "owns" it and/or has permission to use it, but I'm not sure who took it. Could someone give me some guidance on how to do this?

• She may have "permission to use it" (effectively, some sort of informal license) but it is almost impossible for her to own the copyright and not know who took it, because the only way she could own the copyright of a picture someone else took is for them to have explicitly signed over those rights, in which case she would know who did that. Trouble uploading an authorized picture

Hello, I had the copyright send permission for this file: File:Images-stories-Photos-roger scruton 16 70dpi photographer by pete helme-267x397.jpg This file had been deleted from the French Wikipedia page I had done for Roger Scruton. If you have Pete Helme use the template on that page and send an email to the address there then that should work. The file name is rather long. If you still have the picture then "Roger Scruton (year here) by Pete Helme.jpg" may be better. We do have File:Roger Scruton.jpg if you want an image for his article. Wikimedia Commons ID

I have an active ID that I am attempting to use as a login to edit a Wikipedia article.

It does not work.

When I attempt to create an ID to edit, the use of the same ID that I have in Wikimedia is said to be claimed.

If it is claimed due to my valid Wikimedia Commons ID, then, why is it not allowable for use in Wikipedia edits?

Are these accounts separate, or, are they co-joined? They act as if they are both.

You created your account on Commons in 2011. As you can see in the log at the English-language Wikipedia, the account of the same name there is already taken since 2005. Are you the person who created that Wikipedia account in 2005? If so, the problem may be that you are not using the password you used at that time. If not, the problem is that it the account of another user and that's why you can't use it, but because that user made no edits, you could ask on Wikipedia that this user name be reattributed to you. A question about upload

I have uploaded a new version of a the picture http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oriant_on_circ.png. But it did not work properly. The picture here looks correct but both the picture in Wikipedia (http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%90%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%99%D7%99%D7%A0%D7%98%D7%A6%D7%99%D7%94_%28%D7%9E%D7%AA%D7%9E%D7%98%D7%99%D7%A7%D7%94%29) and the Thumbnail of the current version are the old one. In fact the previous Thumbnail becomes correct when I upload a new version but then the current one is wrong again.

it can seem nasty if someone deletes a image you uploaded, and it seems nasty from your side of the matter, but from the other people's side there are so many images that are copyright and are copied off the Internet that it is very hard to do much more with each one than just delete it. There are that many, gazillions. Well, from their side, it almost seems like you're yelling even though you're not, you're just a bit upset and that's understandable.

Copyright status query

There is a Wikipedia article about British actor Freddie Jones.

I live in his home town and I have just added to the article text to mention that a plaque to Freddie is located in the local town hall.

I would like to include a photograph of the plaque, but I'm not sure about the copyright position.

As regards the plaque :-

a) it was produced in association with the British Film Institute under the '100 years of cinema' project. b) it is posted in a public building and is obviously designed to be seen by the widest possible audience.

I took the photo of the plaque myself and intend to make no restrictions on its use.

Yeah, kinda. But really what I'm looking for is suppose I have, say, a facebook photo named N123456789 1234 5678.jpg. How do I get from that back to the Facebook account it came from? I'm more interested in this for purposes of verifying copyright status and less so for purposes of preventing meaningless filenames. (Quite the contrary - I think preventing these filenames is a very BAD idea - if someone is uploading an image they stole from some guy's Facebook account, we should encourage them to advertise that fact by using the Facebook filename for it.) If I find a file in that format - if the user name is BigJimmyP and I determine that it came from the Facebook profile of James Patterson, then we can reasonably infer that the license is probably legitimate. Rights / pictures

Hello, for reason that I do not understand, some personal numerical photographs of a drawing I own have been removed from an article I contributed to. I tried to upload the file again, by paying more attention to the rights/licences (creative commons...), but I always get the same message : "There was another file already on the site with the same content, but it was deleted". Deletions usually happen for a reason, so rather than attempting to unilaterally recreating the file yourself, you should request undeletion. I'm not an administrator, so I can only see the names of the files that have been deleted and the reasons they were deleted. (They're listed in Special:Log/Jdbontemps, and the deletion reasons can be seen by clicking the redlinked filenames.) Do note that if the drawing is protected by copyright, it will only be possible to restore the file if the copyright holder agrees to publish it under a free license. Physical ownership of the drawing does not mean that you hold the copyright to the drawing. —LX (talk, contribs) 19:38, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Problem with a javascript routine

Bility (talk · contribs) wrote this .js script for me almost two years ago (and hasn't made any contributions since), but recently it seems to have stopped working correctly. It's intended function is to find and list all recently-uploaded BSicon files. Can anyone debug it to determine the problem? (Also, while you're "poking around under the hood", would it be possible to have it default to checking the last seven days, but have an option to allow searching a specific date range?)

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The problem is that the scrips is only returning a handful of results or the "No new files found." message when I know that there have been numerous new files uploaded.

Inappropriate use of File talk pages

I've edited Wikipedia before but last night I began preparing my first edits on Wikimedia on the file talk pages associated with the file pages where I thought I might add a more detailed description. Unfortunately two of the file talk pages I wrote have been deleted in their entirety as Inappropriate use of File talk pages. As per the page, Commons:First steps/Quality and description, one of the items that it never hurts to have in descriptions is the location that a picture was taken. I also understand that Talk pages are for suggesting content for a page. Therefore I put notes about the location of the pictures based on landmarks and details in the backgrounds and a search of Google, Google Maps, and Google Street View. I also put some notes about whether the picture was legal on the talk page (human subject old enough to give consent). I know that I forgot to sign my posts. I also realize that some of the details I added may not have been clear in purpose and may even have been inappropriate. However, it was my first posts and if there was room for improvement then partial deletion seems like it would have been the better route. My question is, Overall, is that not an appropriate use of File talk pages? and Should I reinstate my posts, perhaps with some material removed, and, of course, with a signature? • Probably because your comments, especially those at File talk:Nude on Public Highway.jpg looked awfully like stalking, and your conjectures about the exact age of the subject certainly were a bit creepy, and your link to a mugshot that I see no particular reason to connect to the subject of the photo is beyond creepy.

I hear what you say about it looking like stalking but the exact age of the subject touches on whether the image is legal. If the subject was underage then the subject couldn't give consent and the image should be deleted. She looks like she might be underage to me and so I was concerned. I realized afterward that posting notes about it was inappropriate. Logo Deleted how to restore

Hello, I had the copyright send permission for this File:QuickQuackDDDhighres.jpg. This file had been deleted from the English Wikipedia page I had done for Quick Quack Car Wash. Does that mean that you are either the artist who drew the duck, etc. or someone to whom the copyrights have been legally assigned by that person (e.g. you hired them to create it and the contract stipulates that they are handing over copyright)? If so, and if it was indeed your intent to release this under cc-by-sa-3.0, then you can send an email as explained at COM:OTRS and it will presumably be restored. If someone else was the artist (or is the copyright holder by assignment), then they are the person who would have to send such a release.

Otherwise, you might be able to upload a scaled-down version of this to the English-language Wikipedia with a non-free use justification template filled out, but Commons doesn't allow "fair use" of images like this. - Jmabel ! talk 05:16, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Repurposed buildings - categorization

Looking for some advice on categorization - there is a former small college in South Dakota (Yankton College) that closed and is now a prison (Federal Prison Camp, Yankton). I was looking to upload some older images from the Library of Congress here dating to the facility's college days. I had created Category:Yankton College but we also have Category:Federal Prison Camp (Yankton, South Dakota) - should these categories be merged? Should images be cat'd based on time frame taken, or should one be a subcat of the other? This is the first time I have run into this situation. Kelly (talk) 00:26, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

When you created the VI candidate subpage you accidentally included the "File:" namespace part of the file name. The link from Commons:Valued image candidates includes only the file name part. Help naming category for specific type of "itemfill" photo

I'm thinking of creating a category for photos where a single type of item/object fills the entire image (for example see File:BilberriesBig.jpg). I just translated a vector file into Chinese with Inkscape, but I found a black box on the top left corner of my diagram. I don't know and I didn't see it in Inkscape. The black box is deleted. For your information a short citation from Help:SVG:

• Text in Inkscape by default uses a Flowed Text (SVG 1.2) box which can result in problems, it will likely not render at all or render as a (large black) rectangle. To fix this, simply use the ‹Convert To Text› command in the Inkscape Text menu.

• Alternatively, before typing the text, first select the text tool and with the mouse click without dragging on the canvas where you wish the text to begin.

I'm trying to add a photo to an article but it's been deleted, claiming that the photo violates your copyright-rules. The photo was taken privately and hasen't been uploaded to any websites. It's been used on an intranet. Is that grounds enough for a violation?

• It would help a lot to indicate your account name (just sign with ~~~~ and it will be appended to your post) and/or the name to which you are trying to upload the image, so someone can look into the specifics of the case.     • According to the image's EXIF, the author is Henrik Naestoft Christiansen. The copyright field in the EXIF states: "Don't use without written permission - Copyright(2011)." It is true that there is the possibility that the uploader can be the author of the photo, but for the purpose of making an undeletion decision based upon the current evidence, the photo must not be considered as own work of the uploader. Hello Today I uploaded several scans of files I have her ein my archive with given company and name of the author, because unortunately these files are not anywhere on internet so I do not know what kind of license should I use for them? I do not claim they are mine, I only uploaded them here cos they were not anywhere on internet, to be archived for history + I write for everyone of them their real AUTOR NAME and PUBLISHER NAME (peeriodic they were in), all those files are form 90-ties from local periodics, many of them do not exist anymore or have not these files in their archives anymore (for exampkle one of them ha sonly archives from 2005+, so from that point of view my files are the only existing copy), what should I do with it to be accepted?

The rights are not gone, they remain for 70 years after the death of the architect. Category for egg stands

Do we have a category for what I, at least, would call an "egg stand"? I don't see anything for more general "farm stands," either. Trying to add appropriate categories to my recent File:Edison, WA - egg stand on Smith Road 01.jpg; same category would be relevant for (e.g.) File:Pensilva - with eggs for sale from an honesty box - geograph.org.uk - 708761.jpg and that or a related category for something like File:Cambodia 08 - 037 - eggs for sale at the market (3198826603).jpg at a market. There is Category:Egg stalls in Mercat de la Boqueria, so perhaps a more general category should be created.

That's suggestive, but I don't think "markets" is on the spot. The Boqueria is, of course, a market, but more typically these are on or near farms. Still, "stalls" may aim the right way (I suspect that's a more British usage than my American "stands"). We'd talk about a "market stall" (e.g. at Pike Place Market in Seattle) but would not usually use that for something, well, freestanding. Can anyone comment on whether something like this by a UK farm would be called a "stall"? I have no problem with the term if it's in common use somewhere with this meaning. - Jmabel ! talk 23:44, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

BrE opinion: "farm stand"/"farmstand" sounds like an americanism, maybe fairly recent, or local usage which has gained more currency recently, I've not heard it before. "Stand" in the meaning "a small stall or booth selling stuff" is universal afaict. I think "stand" in your usage "egg stand" is just a small extension of the meaning "small piece of furniture where you buy things", it's not a big stretch at all, although it does sound odd to me because I would expect even a stand to have someone staffing it. We have Category:Market stalls and Category:Stalls. If you consider "stands" as a specific case of "stalls" (same thing but smaller), maybe distinguished by subcats, then they can go in the stall categories. The awkward thing you hit on is, to distinguish the meaning of "stall selling things" from another kind of stall, the modifier "market" is used. Stalls in this sense very often are at markets, so it doesn't appear to be a problem. Stands, however, are less associated with markets, they could just be in the street or on a road somewhere... "egg stand", "hotdog stand", "lemonade stand", etc., so "market stand" or a link with "market stall" doesn't seem appropriate. This specific concept as I'm aware of it is an "honesty box", whether it's on a table or a trolley or a tree stump or a chair or whatever, though I suspect this is a britishism. I don't think of it as a stand (or a stall :) but I can see why it would be called that –⁠moogsi (blah) 14:47, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

I have an image I'd like to upload. It was provided by an organization and I have permission from that organization to release it. I also have the name of the photographer, but that person was hired by to organization and the organization owns the rights to the photo. Can I enter the name of the organization under the Author field?

I uploaded this from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Angry_Aspie. The heading was Pictures I've taken for Wikipedia. So, since it was published on wikipedia, I assumed it was ok to use. Many of his photos have been uploaded to the Commons already, some by others, e.g. File:BondarantPharmJBM.jpg. Should I have formatted it like User:Fanvon did? The photographer hasn't edited since last year. Maybe I'm wrong. Thanks,

You just forgot to include a status tag. You can use {{PD-user-w|project=w|language=en|user=Angry Aspie}} or another similar tag. It's also probably better to source directly to the en.wp file (File:Picture 467.jpg), not to the user page. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Sevi band.jpg

The file, I am trying to use is sent personally to me by Svetlana Bliznakova, who is the owner of the picture. I got personal permission from her to use this photo in the article I am writing about Sevi band, and it seems there is no way I can use this picture without constantly receiving warnings that I cannot use it... What should I do?

See: Commons:OTRS 'Owning' the picture is different than copyright. If she bought the rights from the photographer then she would truly own it. Ask her to check with the photographer about who owns the rights. Then have the rights holder fill out the form on the OTRS page. Page loading issues

Certain pages on Commons don't seem to be loading anymore. For instance User:Mattbuck/Railways/2013_April_11-20 or User_talk:Túrelio. This has been happening for the past few hours. Same name exists locally on Wikipedia

I am trying to use File:Transducer.jpg in an article on en.wiki. Unfortunately, there is another (unrelated) file of that name already on the local wiki. I thought I could solve the problem by creating a redirect at File:Orthomode transducer.jpg and linking to that instead. That works in that I now have a thumbnail of the correct image in my article, but clicking through it still goes to the incorrect local image (for reasons I don't really understand since that is now a different name). I finally tried to request that Transducer.jpg be moved, but the form is refusing to submit because of the redirect I created earlier. The file could definitely do with renaming anyway as "Transducer" is ridiculously too general. Can someone suggest a way forward, or better still, sort out the problem? Uploading scan of book cover

Hi,

I scanned a book cover by grandfather, from 1930. I am the heir of all IP and works after my father and mother passed away. Should I put the license under Template:PD heirs or is some other license more appropriate? Thanks, Mvanco (talk) 21:22, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

Is it the text of the book or the art of the cover that is by your grandfather? If you are the only copyright owner of the work, the decision about the license is yours. Both the book and the cover are my grandfather's work. The book has already been published on-line as he passed away in 1943. Question about blanket Public Domain for photos from a state government website

Hi, hope I'm asking in the right place. I have sort of a unique situation to figure out. I'd VERY much like to upload and use official photos of member politicians from the Missouri House of Representatives and Missouri Senate websites. I feel these would be a nice enhancement to each politicians Wiki. I've exchanged e-mail with the official state photographer for the website images, and he states that all photos on the site are in the public domain and free to use. I know that a "permission e-mail" is probably required. My question / problem is does there need to be a seperate e- mail for each photo uploaded, listing the file name, etc. or can a "blanket e-mail" of sorts cover all of them? I fear if I ask the gentleman to do a seperate e-mail for each photo he'll consider it too time consuming (which it would be) and tell me to go jump in the proverbial lake. Does Anyone Review Info for Relevancy?

I was a passenger on the SS Rembrandt during its final voyage as a Premier Cruise Liner in 2000. I have the original cruise brochure and Capt's notice to the passengers regarding the the turn around mid voyage. The brochure has the ship deck layouts, interior photographs etc. Would anyone be interested in this material? I also have the Line's brochure containing the deck plans for their other ships - Island Breeze, Ocean Breeze, Sea Breeze, Sea Wind and Oceanic/Big Red Boat I.

Sorry, but we don't accept any work over which the author asserts copyright (see the introduction to Commons:Licensing). Refining search by pixel size and type of license

is it ok to make categories for a class of pictures, so that when you want them you don't have to scroll through thousands each time?

I find the categories hard to use. If I want pictures just of a certain subject but if there is no category for them, it takes days to find them as often the categories have so many different subjects in them to sort through. Search is only of limited help and often misses it completely, like if you don't know that "Viirakkal" means "Hero stones". Maybe the only way is once you find a picture, start listing them somewhere? Keep them somewhere somehow? Or what? Any suggestions? Farrajak (talk) 19:09, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Alphabetizing in a "By country" category.

I created the category "Military parades in the United States", and assigned it the parent "Military parades by country", but it alphabetized wrong ("M" instead of "U"), so I changed the parent assignment to "Military parades". By appending a sort key after parent category: [[Category:Military parades by country|United States]]. I have done this for Category:Military parades in the United States and placed it back into Category:Military parades by country. {{DEFAULFSORT:sort key}} can be used to change how a page is always sorted by default. uploaded file is tagged as not having licensing info

This file File:High Bridge in Kentucky.jpg is tagged as not having licensing info. I think I screwed up because I changed the name from File:Picture 467.jpg to this name first - it being more descriptive. Now on wikipedia it says the file wasn't transferred. See [6]. Hi, The file was tagged as having no license (by a bot) because when you uploaded it, it didn't have a license.

How are you transferring files from Wikipedia? There are a few methods at w:Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons which will do the heavy lifting automatically and save you messing around with templates. FtCG for example will let you change the name as you transfer and then sort everything out for you.

I've updated the file's info on Commons to how it would look if transferred with FtCG. –⁠moogsi (blah) 22:18, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

The "Now Commons" template on the Wikipedia page says the file isn't on Commons because the parameter (the filename on Commons) isn't entered correctly. See w:Template:Now Commons –⁠moogsi (blah) 22:21, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

FtCG (For the Common Good) is just another method for transferring things from Wikipedia (as mentioned at w:Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons#How to transfer files to Commons). File:Chiloe0.svg image don't render text to path always

Hi,

I uploaded an image with 3 text strings adhered to a curve.("Golfo de Ancud", "Golfo de Reloncavi" and "Estuario de Reloncavi")

• File:Chiloe0.svg shows none of the strings
• http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b1/Chiloe0.svg shows the 3 strings correctly
• en:Fjords and channels of Chile shows none of them

Can any one of you resolve the issue?.

I would like to use a political cartoon on a Wikipedia page, which would require first posting it here. Category naming confusion

There are a number of categories of the form "Queensland in the 1910s", "Queensland in the 1920s", etc, which were used for photos with "circa" dates. As there were some photos with exact dates, I added subcategories of the form "Queensland in 1911", etc. Then some user complained that I should have called them "1911 in Queensland" because that is the convention. So now I don't know what to do. The category help page gives examples of categories with the year both fore and aft. The categories "Queensland in the 1910s" were already in place, so I was following what I thought was the established style. Problem Updating files

I tried to update an SVG file (Vajra_Guru_Mantra.svg) I created some time ago - even after two days and clearing my cache the thumbnail still shows the old version. Now Having similar problems with a JPEG file (Lanydza_script_KA-examples_02.jpg). In this case the old version is displayed but the correct version is in the latest thumbnail.

File Not Updating

I'm having problems updating my file Lanydza script KA-examples 02.jpg. When I uploaded a corrected version there is a new thumbnail but the main picture displayed remains the same. I tried this twice with the same result - and tried reverting - so now the whole thing is a mess - but whatever I do the wrong image is displayed.

The correct version is the one most recently uploaded which has a larger top on the second glyph.

Numbers of files

How can i find the number of files i have upload in commons (without needed to numbering them one by one by the list); Xaris333 (talk) 22:19, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

This might seem like work, but it's fairly simple and I think it should work.

1. Click on the Contributions or User page tab
2. Under "Toolbox" on the left side of your screen, click "Logs"
3. At the top, change the dropdown menu from "All public logs" to "Upload log"; click Go
4. You'll get a list, and you'll see (Latest | Earliest) View (newer 50 | older 50) (20 | 50 | 100 | 250 | 500). Click on 500 (or the highest number you can)
5. For me, I get a list of 500, and an option to view "older 500". So that's 500 so far... Click on "Older 500"
6. Suddenly "Older 500" is no longer clickable. That means there are less than 500 files listed. So click on the next highest number, 250. For me, "older 250" is still not clickable, so I pick the next number down, 100. "Older 100" becomes available, so the list is now showing 100 more files. 600 total so far.
7. Click "older 100", and for me, it's not clickable, so I choose "50", and "older 50" becomes available, so that means my list now shows 50 files, with more to go. 650 total.
8. and so on. Does that make sense? At the very last page, you'll have a list of less than 20 files and you'll have to count them by hand. Fastest way that I can think of. – Kerαunoςcopia^◁galaxies 23:39, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

I have verbal permission from an artist to use a photograph of one of her artworks made in the 1970s for her wikipedia page. See COM:OTRS. The person who owns the rights (the artist) needs to specify the license. Permission specifically for a Wikipedia page is absolutely not sufficient on Commons: the image must be free-licensed. Some Wikipedias, including the English-language Wikipedia, are looser about that and allow limited use of non-free materials: on the English-language Wikipedia you would have to fill out a copy of en:Template:Non-free_use_rationale. Also note that if the artwork is three-dimensional, both the artist and the photographer will need to agree to publication under a free license for the photo to be hosted on Commons. I am trying to upload an image to my infobox to complete my wiki article. I have contacted the company I am writing about and they are happy to give me an image to use. Is there a template for marking two scans that need to be stitched together?

File:Skany dokumentow historycznych 016.jpg and File:Skany dokumentow historycznych 017.jpg are the top and bottom of an old leaflet that need to be stitched together. I've used the other_version field to make this quite apparent, but I am also looking for a template I could add so that I can draw attention to this need. Post answers here. Reasons was declared as "No source since 19 April 2013."/ But I did not receive any warning on my personal discussion page. as I received regularly in similar situations before that happened. • You were not the uploader, hence the lack of notice. User:Foma uploaded it, and gave the source as {{Own}} which was almost certainly not true, hence the deletion. Attribution of derivative works?

I think I'm still really confused about attribution on derivative works. For example, with File:Steve Roach, Tucson.jpg, I am using {{cc-by-sa-3.0|1=Linda Kohanov}}. But then I make a derivative here: File:Steve Roach, Tucson (bright).jpg. I used the same license tag with attribution to the photographer. Is this correct? I don't care about credit for me. But I also don't want to misinterpret the phrase "You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work". I don't quite follow. The information template says Author = Linda, derivative = Keraunoscopia. But should I remove the 1=Linda Kohanov parameter from the license template and simply let anyone who decides to re-use the work figure it out for themselves? I've seen my derivatives used on news sites, and they'll credit both the original author, and "derivative: Keraunscopia", which is pretty much exactly what I'd expect. But really it's the 1= parameter that I'm wondering if I should just do away with, or should I actually have the parameter say 1=Linda Kohanov, derivative by Keraunoscopia? – Kerαunoςcopia^◁galaxies 03:29, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

I uploaded some images which the copyright owner said she would license under CC. Commons:OTRS says

If the link to the file is not available online, you may upload the file on Commons with the {{OTRS pending}} template and have the author link to it in the declaration of consent.

Well, the upload wizard wouldn't accept {{OTRS pending}} in the licensing field so I did... I don't know what I did -- left it blank maybe -- the whole process is very confusing. Now there's a scary 7-day deletion notice on the files which I wouldn't worry about since the copyright owner will probably email OTRS tomorrow... except somewhere I read that OTRS is 100 days behind, so how does that fit with the scary 7-day notice? Meanwhile, I tried to add {{OTRS pending}} to the files but that template says that an email "has been sent" to OTRS and that's not true since the email has not, in fact, been sent yet.

First of all, don't be scared of the deletion notice. The files may be "deleted", but they can always be retrieved if the OTRS ticket comes through. First thing first is to clean up your files. Go to each of them and place {{subst:OP}} in the permission parameter of the {{Information}} template. Next, you need to add a license. Which CC license was agreed upon? CC-BY? CC-BY-SA? Perhaps another one. You need to add something like {{Cc-by-3.0}} or {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} to the licensing section (where the scary tag is). Then, the URLs need to be included with the Declaration of Consent to help the OTRS team easily find the images that are licensed for free use by the copyright holder. You can go to the OTRS Noticeboard and try to ask for a rush job, if you'd like. – Kerαunoςcopia^◁galaxies 05:33, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Let me say first that you must be some kind of saint -- it must be very repetitive answering the same questions over and over. But I'm afraid I'm more confused than ever.

• I am not the copyright holder, so why does it make sense for me to add the specific license tag? Doesn't OTRS do that when they get the email from the copyright owner? Or am I supposed to add the tag now, and OTRS simply confirms when they get the email?
• I copied the boilerplate from Commons:Choosing a license, filled in the blanks, and emailed it to the copyright holder for her to forward to OTRS, which she'll probably do by April 29. I understand deleted material can be retrieved from history but the article in which they're used was recently a "Did you know?" and pointers to it are probably being emailed and facebooked and so on all over the place now. It would be an embarrassment for the images to disappear now. So I ask again -- if OTRS is 100 days behind like someone said, does that mean there's going to be a 93-day hiatus when the article just won't have images? You mentioned asking at OTRS N-board for a rush job -- does that mean without a rush, everything authorized by email routinely gets deleted? That doesn't make any sense.

Nah, I'm only answering questions here while waiting for my own to be answered :) You're not the copyright holder, but the photographer is, but I was assuming you'd discussed which license she would choose to make sure she understands what licensing her images means. It would be unfair to "dupe" someone into licensing their image when they're ignorant of what that license entails. I'm not sure what the boilerplate you emailed her is, but when dealing with OTRS, you should email her the Declaration of Consent. It would be kind to fill out the information for her (sounds like you may have already done this), but the license must also be written in. If you sent her the Declaration, then maybe you're hoping she fills in the license herself. I would make certain she does this properly. It's not OTRS's job to fill in the blanks; they simply verify that permission has been given for that file to be used freely. You should keep in constant communication with her. The minute she has sent that email to permissions, you can go to the OTRS noticeboard and request that someone search for that email. As to how the 100 day backlog works, I'm not familiar with their procedures and I wouldn't worry about it, so long as you try communicating with them (or find someone on the list of OTRS volunteers and contact them directly. Ideally, these images should not have been uploaded without all the "paperwork" having been figured out. You upload the images, email her the URL links, she plugs them into the Declaration of Consent, and forwards it to permissions. – Kerαunoςcopia^◁galaxies 20:53, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

By boilerplate I mean the Decl of Consent, and I filled it in for her though she's a plenty smart cookie -- trust me -- and knows exactly what she's doing. Lizensierung Bilder Stift Wilhering

Hallo!

Ich habe den Artikel "Stift Wilhering" erweitert und einige Bilder hinzugefügt. Ich habe mir die Beschreibung vom Upload & Lizensierung angesehen und eine Lizenzvorlage hineinkopiert, welche dort als gültige Vorlage aufschien.

Nun habe ich die Meldung bekommen, dass die Bilder ungültig lizensiert sind. http://www.cistercensi.info/ ist Besitzer der Bilder und hat mir erlaubt, die Bilder für Wikipedia zu benutzen. W

Welche Lizenz ist nun die ricthige? Habe mich schon mehrmals durchgelesen, kenne mich jedoch nicht wirklich aus.

Please correct errors introduced on my images

You are using several of my images from the Geograph Project of the Loch of Strathbeg. However on all of these 'Loch of Strathbeg' has been altered to 'Loch Strathbeg' which is incorrect. I have edited the 'of' back into some of them, but I find I cannot correct the incorrect titles. Can you please make all the necessary corrections, because at the moment it looks as if it is I who have made the error. Thank you.

Farm Security Administration photos

I am trying to photographs from the Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression. This is a government agency and the files are in the public domain. This has been confirmed by a librarian at the University of North Carolina, Chapel HIll. However, I keep getting error messages from Nikbot. You need to add a valid license template - check template:PD-USGov. If this template applies for your images, you can just add it to the image summary under the "licensing" header and remove the warning template. I would also suggest to add a brief explanation and the link (similar to your statement above) with the parameter "permission" to the image information. Then the situation is completely verifiable. Fixed How did you transfer this? The equivalent here of w:Template:NoRightsReserved is usually {{PD-user}} –⁠moogsi (blah) 05:47, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
