How to tag mages that appears to be corrupt

Is there any template to tag images that appears to be corrupt, like Image:IQ-70to130-ColorBars.png, or should they be nominated for deletion? Finn Rindahl 22:14, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

If full size image is fine, it could be kept. It's just MediWiki software problem with generating thumbnails for big images. However if image is just chart will be good idea to upload SVG version instead. --EugeneZelenko 14:44, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for including description, source, and licence information with your image, as appropriate. The thing you were lacking is the Commons tag which are used here to make it clear and easy to see the licence; see Commons:Copyright tags. The image description page still says "License is Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike NonCommercial 3.0" which is not suitable for commons because commercial use has to be allowed. You have to release it under another license that allows commercial use, otherwise it has to be deleted. --16:57, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Are low resolution images useful?

My wife and I have taken a number of photographs that we hope to sell, but commercial value depends on resolution - that of a 4+ Mpx version is (we hope) significant, while that of a 0.2Mpx one is trivial.

The immediate case in point is that we have pictures of the bridges at Wycoller, East Lancs, UK to which reference is made in the relevant Wikipedia article - and which I could use to illustrate that article; for instance: [Clam Bridge]

We'd be glad to release, say, 500x375px versions (adequate for use on the web - such as in the Wikipedia article) under the Creative Commons: Attribution + ShareAlike license, but want to retain rights over the original, ~8Mpx versions.

I believe other photographers have done so before, and I know of nothing wrong with releasing a useful moderate resolution version under a free licence and keeping more strict rights to the full original resolution version. I'd suggest including the information that rights are retained to the higher resolution version on the uploaded version, just to prevent any possible confusion. Bot for removing categories?

Is there a bot that removes categories from images (or images from categories if you like), I would like to clean out Category:Categories_requiring_diffusion which patently should not contain any images. Where should I request this (I'd do it manually but 184 is very slow ;-) --Tony Wills 09:04, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Looks like manual work for me (human oversight required). You could use MediaWiki:Cat-a-lot.js and MediaWiki:HotCat.js for this purpose. --EugeneZelenko 17:08, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

You could use User:CommonsDelinker/commands for moving all images from one category to another. But this will not work if you need to move only selected images. --EugeneZelenko 15:09, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Image:Orange trademark.svg

Steps to improving and re-uploading an image

I have got as far as downloading and editing an image, but I am not sure what to do to retain the correct license information when I upload it. If I leave the box blank, will the creator's existing license tag be retained? Or do I need to duplicate it somehow? Or replace it? I cannot find anything that answers this question, which should be in FAQs. Adrian M. H. 21:45, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

SVG Upload Issues

I'm a little confused as to why Image:Providence Metro Area.svg keeps loading up at 200x200 pixels when it's not at all. In Inkscape I have the document set to 800x520 px, and when you load the image directly it works fine, but MediaWiki's thumbnail raster thingy claims it's 200x200. What gives? This is the first time I've ever uploaded an SVG file (I worked in PNGs before). Petros63 03:44, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Hm that is strange, especially since Firefox renders it at a larger size. I made a bug report: bugzilla:11163. Maybe they have been tweaking the image rendering software recently and this was an unfortunate side effect. I've really never seen this before... --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 11:45, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Not my photo but author given

There are photos on About.com in the Hollywood Movies section attach to an article by Rebecca Murray about Grand Slam Sci-Fi Summit 2007. The author of the photos Richard Chavez's name is given. Only if it is under a free licence. See Commons:Licensing. The front page of About.com says "©2007 About, Inc., A part of The New York Times Company. All rights reserved", so I would assume it is NOT under a free licence unless a specific page or image says that it is. -- Infrogmation 05:46, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

How to ensure attribution/photo credit

Attribution and ShareAlike. I shot and uploaded a photo: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Diana_camera.jpg with ShareAlike license. I want to make sure it's clear that my credit needs to run with image, how it should be run. In the author field can I put my photo credit instead of user name?

I guess what I'm wondering is, what are the standards for the "author" and "source" fields for wiki images? Can I put whatever I want there? Such as: Photo credit must run with image: John Smith?


I've been reading help pages here but haven't found this information. If there is a good source that details this issue--proper credits and attribution for CC photo licenses, I would appreciate hearing about it.

Image:451px-Helmcken Falls 2006 Ben W Bell.jpg

I found this image on Wikipedia here where it is licenced GFDL which I believe is okay on Commons but I guess when I uploaded it to Commons I must not have described the existing license properly. I thought I had but I guess not. The image has been flagged now for deletion. I have added a note referring to the source, the author and the existing license to notes with the image but I expect there is a better way to fix this up. Hi Ken, I replaced the warning with a license template. It's all OK now. A couple of notes for future:
  • you should use the CommonsHelper tool to make sure all the important info is properly (and easily) transferred across. Otherwise images might need to be deleted if important info is missing.
  • See the "451px-" at the start of the image name? That generally means you only downloaded a thumbnail, not the original high-res image. When you're downloading an image for transfer, always right-click on the text link below the image to save it -- not on the image itself. Images unfortunately can't be renamed, so you could upload it again under the original name, or just not worry about the weird name. I have some movies I'd like to upload but they're all in MPEG-1. The tools outlined on Help:Converting video don't help - ff doesn't run, and VLC gives errors. Any help? Mostly I'd like to know exactly how to run ff. I am on a Mac. ALTON .ıl 08:23, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Pictures

Hi there. I am currently updateing the Stirling Albion pages over on Wikipedia and I want to put pictures on here to use on the Stirling Albion Pages. I uploaded a picture last week but it since has been removed for copyright violation. The image was not violating copyright. As I had permission from the owner of the picture to use on wikipedia and related projects, also the images were released to be used by anyone. There was only one stipulation that the photographer/owner name was included with the photograph. Please can some on help me with how to upload a picture and not have it deleted. All images I have come from unofficial websites and all are happy to post some of there pictures on wiki projects, without any copyright restrictions. -3ease reply on my talk page thanks Gorilla 10:04, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Image not shown in gallery

I recently uploaded this image Image:JolieTattoo.jpg which works fine on its description page, but both the gallery boxes on Angelina Jolie and Category:Angelina_Jolie appear blank, despite it being implemented with the exact same code as all the other images on Angelina Jolie. Not sure what went wrong there, maybe someone experienced can take a look at it. EnemyOfTheState 11:05, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Copyright issue

I have a screenshot of the Wikipedia homepage to show Internet Explorer 7 as a web browser on en:web browser. It shows the bars, tabs, etc. at the top (above the page content). Is this free use or fair use? Thanks, Auroranorth 14:12, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Hint: for en.wikipedia, use [[w:name of article]], for others use [[:xx:name of article]] (I saw you were having problems ;)). Harman Blennerhassett

Creator is Alexander Hay Ritchie (1822 - 1895).[2] When was this published? You would need to show evidence that this was published in the U.S. before 1978 or after 2002. If it was first published 1978 - 2002, it would be copyrighted until the end of 2047. (Though I don't know who would hold that copyright.) Lupo 16:06, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Flaw in SVG

Someone pointed out to me that there is a flaw in Image:APLdel.svg and Image:Colours.SVG. If an image is displayed on an article and you click on it, the browser freezes and the SVG source is displayed. However, if I try it, I just see the image in its original size.

Why didn't you ask me (being the "someone" you mentioned) that question ? Anyway, you still don't get the point: when you click the image on the description page, Firefox freezes for a minute or so, and then shows only the source code, and not the image. That is because no style element is defined (which I already told you on your Dutch talk page, but you choose to ignore that (like you choose to ignore most remarks there)).
And: why did you request for deletion of my corrected version of that image, even before asking your question here ? That is not the way to work together... :-( - Erik Baas 20:54, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

There is a reason why I did not ask you. These are the facts, as they are known to me:

  1. HH designs an SVG file and it looks good.
  2. HH uploads the file to Wikipedia Commons. Wikipedia reports no syntax error and converts the file to PNG.
  3. HH includes the file on a page. Everything is fine. When HH clicks the picture, the original size is shown.
  4. EB clicks the picture and his browser freezes.

When I'd ask you for help, I know what the answer would be:

  1. There is something wrong with HH's computer.
  2. There is something wrong with Wikipedia Commons.
  3. There is nothing wrong with EB's computer.

@HH: The error is: "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it.", which is what I told you a couple of days ago on your Dutch talk page. BTW: The problem is not just in this file, some of your other uploads also show this type of errors, as MdE (amongst others) pointed out here.
P.S.: This story is actually about Image:Colours.svg, not Image:Colours.SVG (which is a copy of the first, showing the same errors, and only being uploaded after the a deletion request was filed for the first one). - Erik Baas 00:45, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
I found two 'style's in your version of the file, but in such a place that it seems unlikely that they matter to the validity of the entire file.
Unfortunately my computer happens to be bust - it does not freeze or crash when I attempt to show an SVG file. Instead it simply shows the file. This makes it hard for me to test a file.
I'll consider to have my computer repaired. Every computer crashes frequently - so should mine. HandigeHarry 07:12, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

I wish to delete a photo

I wish to delete a photo. I originally posted it as "Impatiens pallida.jpg" on Wikipedia. Another user, who feels it's actually a different species renamed it "Impatiens capensis yellow form.jpg" [3] and uploaded it here to Commons. While I disagree with his assessment (as do a botanist I was hiking with when I took the photo, and another online botanist friend of mine), I do not wish to belabor the taxon of this specimen and would prefer it simply be deleted from Commons. I think will be good idea to upload you image under original name on Commons. Then you need to go on Image:Impatiens_capensis_yellow_form.jpg and click on Nominate for deletion link. Edits to an existing file

I would like to upload a new file, which is an edit to an existing one. I don't want to run over the old file, but I would like to note that it is an edited version of it, and off course link to the origin. ST 14:57, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

How to use wiki commons files in a wikia project?

It's not possible, I'm sorry. I'm sure if InstantCommons is ever finished, Wikia will enable it, and there will be big announcements. :) In the meantime, you will have to separately download our images from here and re-upload them over there. Is this ineligible?

This is the sign used on highways in the Canadian province of Alberta. The font used for "Alberta" was created in 1972 and "is restricted to provincial government departments and agencies". But fonts are somewhat special; can that SVG remain here or do I need to find a similar publicly available font? --NE2 10:28, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Standard letters

There are several images I would be more comfortable in releasing if I could accompany them with a Model Release Form. Has any one devised a standard wording for a Model Release Form that would be suitable for commons?
On a similar line of thought- there are several requests for images of prominent public figures. I am in a position to email them and ask for image they would release under CC 2.0 attrib, but would need to correctly attrib to the photographer. Has any anyone devised the standard wording for such an email?
And yet again, if I am persuading organisations to CC the photographs they put on their website- what would the preferred wording to ask them to use?

Following the thread, it seems that some research is needed. So google at hand I had a go. And I have come up with some findings and links, which I now share for comment.
  • 1. I am not a barrister (attorney) so I am not legally qualified.
  • 2. Model release forms do not protect the photographer- but the publisher- in this case Wikipedia and Commons- it behoves the publisher to write the form and the photographer to ensure it is signed. The photographer can upload anything- it is only an issue when the publisher displays them.
  • 3. Googling 'uk model release form' paradoxically gives better descriptions of US law than googling 'model release form'.
  • 4. The following links, gives 4 useful starting point. They are produced by an agency soliciting for new images- which seems similar to 'Commons'.
  • 5. For a photographer, asking for a model release, means that they can be refused and are in a weaker position than if they had never asked- though even if refused, the US public spaces defence(defense?) could still be used. In UK it would be case law.
  • 6. Many amateur photographers have asked this question before- but the reply has been that ::a) he law is fuzzy and
b) it must be on the web- try googling (a bit recursive!)
c) its hype they are not needed
d) but one did emerge.

This appears useful- but as an amateur I can see that this can be challenged by the model in that it is not witnessed and the language is too vague so (s)he signed a document they didn't and couldn't understand.
though I believe that their intrepretation of the law is wrong- it is certainly representative- and maybe this was why I asked the question.

Image replaced, but not the 800-pixel preview

I have replaced the chart

Railway-electrification_Europe_2005_en.png

by a new version, but this new version is shown only in the thumb preview and in the 1062 pixel wide full size version, but not in the 800-pixel version. How comes? What has to be done to mend that problem? --L.Willms 17:11, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

No. It still shows me the transparent background in the 800-pixel preview, other than the yellow background in the thumb preview (shown right) and the full image. What have I to do to change that? --L.Willms 18:00, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Looks like it's either a problem with the PNG file or with the thumbnailer we use. My previews are 640px, and I do get the yellow background, but it shows me the checkerboard pattern indicating transparency in the text box in the upper right corner (instead of white). Strange. When you see the checkerbox pattern indicating transparency, you have the first version. There is also a difference in the text in the upper right corner: the new version says "line length", the old version "track length". The latter is wrong. The thumb shown here is correct. The first version hat only the graphics area with a colored background, the new version has a yellow background also on the text column to the left, showing all the country names.--L.Willms 18:22, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

So what happened? Who did what to solve the problem? How can I avoid it myself the next time? It does not help much if I have to come into this forum everytime I have to replace an image and wait for unexplicable miracles performed by the resident magicians (I will have to replace the image in question a second time).--L.Willms 18:58, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm not totally sure if this was what solved the problem (Lupo or someone else might have done something terribly clever beyond my understanding while I was experimenting) but after experiencing a similar problem the other day I added MediaWiki:ThumbnailPurger.js to my monobook, and used those functions to purge the 800px thumbnail. It's possible to do this manually (or so I've been told), but you'll have to ask somebody else how ;) Finn Rindahl 19:07, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
No, I didn't do anything this time. :-) Except looking at the image description page. Maybe it was a caching problem. Our caches are updated asynchronously, so it may sometimes take some time until the new version is shown. Typically, purging the page cures that problem (append "?action=purge" in the URL bar in your browser and hit return, that forces the WikiMedia cache servers to reload it). If it's just that your browser's cache (yes, the browser caches stuff, too, locally on your harddisk) still has the old version, simply forcing a reload of the page may do the trick. But as here several people had a problem, I think it was the WikiMedia cache servers that weren't up-to-date yet. Lupo 07:21, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Query on Iranian photographs

Image:Shirdel-Antonioni1975.jpg and Image:Shirdel-Rosi.jpg were deleted as having no source. Uploader came back to me (having put the nsd tag on) saying:

Hi,These photos of Kamran Shirdel have been taken 30 years ago in Iran. Their photographer is unknown and photos belong to Kamran Shirdel. Is this information enough for their re-uploading and reviving? If no, what information should I add and if yes, shall I upload them again? thanks azizi 06:59, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Licensing has a clause about the thirty years, but wouldn't we then need OTRS permission from Kamran Shirdel to be able to keep them on Commons? Deadstar (msg) 07:51, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

copyright issue

assistance please. I have uploaded some images [4] at [5] for example. The copyright is o.k. -Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License- in that it says the image is free for others to use as long as acknowledgment is made but it also states that I took the photograph. I may have, others may have, the image belongs to the heritage service I work for. That organisation is happy for the images to be in the public domain under the above license. Where am I going wrong in getting myself as the copyright owner. I will need to sort this out as I hope to add other images to Commons. Why not use Commons?

None, if you ask me. Some, however, are worried that they are not able to watch their images (on their watchlist) easily. If I'm not mistaken, there are technical ways to circumvent that problem. Others are annoyed that we sometimes come up with new rules and delete images that have previously been regarded as free. I, on the other hand, think that on Commons we are constantly improving our knowledge of copyright issues and that this leads to more accurate guidelines. Samulili 19:58, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Until I became aware that commons would email me changes on my watchlist, I was deadset against it. There's also some worries that commons will delete images that are free enough for local wikis based on some rule change or whatnot (i.e. PD-US images becoming inelidgible if they're not PD-Mexico or PD-Malawi or what have you). Query over which tag to use

I wish to upload a scanned electronic version of a photograph of a public figure (a Viennese musician) taken in 1943. The photographer is unknown. The subject of the photograph presented it to me as a gift in 1995 shortly before her death. It is the only copy, although I've allowed the photo to be used on another website. We wish to include it in a Wikipedia article on the subject.

Should I use the anon tag (more than 50 years old)?

I also wish to upload two ogg files, each of an entire audio track of my own musical performances for use on Wikipedia, as Chairman of the Board of the recording company that owns the copyright of the commercial CDs of these recordings. Is this possible with a simple statement by me on the info page of each file? What tag is appropriate?

In all three cases, I want to release the files into the public domain unconditionally.

Hi and thank you for willing to contribute to Wikimedia Commons. As for your first question, it is unlikely that the image is really public domain, since it only becomes public domain 70 years after the death of the author.
For your second question, I advise you to upload the files to Wikimedia Commons, and then send this email template to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org from an email address that is associated with your recording company. (replace license by "Public Domain"). I'm sorry that we have to make it this complicated, but in the past we have had users claiming to be part of a recording company, but were in fact impersonating them.
Also note that by publishing something into the public domain, you allow anybody to use that file for any purpose; not just Wikipedia. Feel free to ask questions if something is unclear. -- Bryan (talk to me) 14:45, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Issue 1, 1943 photograph. So does that mean that, although I thought the gift of the only copy of the photo represented a transfer of ownership of the photo by the subject to me, if the person who took the photo (probably her husband—I may be able to check this) died less than 50 years ago, there's no apppropriate tag for the Commons? And I suppose that a publicity photo, which I suspect it was, cannot be tagged as such in the Commons. Alternatively, is Wikipedia more likely to allow this item without going through the Commons?

Technical question: Special:Upload and Template:Image information

First off, I apologise if this is the wrong place to ask: just point me in the right direction, then.

I have noticed that in some (if not all) upload forms, the template, image information, is pre-loaded in the summary windown [7]. I am an administrator at the Afrikaans Wikipedia and we would like to have a similar template load in our summary window. Unfortunately the users with the technical know-how (who also started the project) have long since left, so we're left to our own devices when it comes to these type of things.

Ranaming/moving images

The technology doesn't make it possilble to rename images. You have to upload an image with a different name and then mark the older image with {{bad name|new image name}} (if the old image isn't used anywhere) or with {{duplicate|new image name}} (if the old image is used somewhere). Policy on model releases/people in images?

LOD.SVG Doesn't display

I tried converting an image I uploaded as .jpg to .svg using InkScape. I used the trace function to create a path and added other features. However, when I upload the .svg file it does not display. If I open the link, it displays but with a big black slash. Everything is OK in Inkscape so I'm not sure where the error is occuring.

When I export from Inkscape as .png file and upload it is OK. See LOD.png for conversion and LOD.JPG for the original graphic.

I uploaded a new version of the file which I think will render correctly... but since the software doesn't seem to feel like rendering new thumbnails, we will have to wait a bit to see.
What I did:
  1. Checked the file's rendering in Firefox to see if it was a mistake with the MediaWiki(rsvg) rendering, or a mistake with the file. (It was the file, despite what it looks like in Inkscape.)
  2. Highlighted the area of the drawing in Inkscape, File > Document Properties..., click the button "Fit page to selection".
  3. Save file as plain SVG, not Inkscape SVG.
  4. Check file renders correctly directly in Firefox (you need a pretty recent version of FF for this to work, possibly 2.0)

Thanks for fixing the file. It is still not rendering when I try to insert it on Wikipedia but is OK as an individual file in Firefox.

I did start a new file from scratch which does seem to be rendering properly. I will have to complete it. Must be something I did when I converted in using Inkscape (I am new to it). For the new version I made sure to convert the trace of the bitmap to a single path, not an outline. That seems to work. That and converting to regular .svg!

See drawing2.svg on Wikimedia commons. Its set to be deleted soon though since I didn't add copyright information. Just a test image. Mattj63 14:48, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Still unclear how to use images from Commons

Hello, I work for a small journal (about amateur astornomy, but it does not much matter) and I would be very happy if somebody could help me understading how to use the images from Commons, as more and more useful material gradually appears here. Basicaly I am concerned with two points that I consider essential, yet I haven't found a good answer around (though probably only because I'm a poor finder).

1. how to use CC-SA licenced images? It is very well suited for internet reproduction, but there's no way I could put the whole magazine under such a license (as there is the material from dozens of authors) and it is also impossible to print out the lengthy licence (it would take ten times more space than the picture) - this also concernes the GFDL that I think also requires the inclusion of the licence. Does that mean that the CC-SA or GFDL'ed pictures are simply not intended for press use or is there a good way to proceed that I did not realize? 2. how to atribute images properly when no name is shown? every CC license requires attribution and it is the think one just should do anyway (even if not required). But how to attribute the image when only a nickname (wiki login) is shown along with the picture? it is often not possible to find out who is the person behind the nick.

Again, my unability to settle those issues is probably only due to may poor abilities, but anyway if I may suggest, it would be very nice if there is was a section clearly explaining how to use the material under the various licences in press/magazines etc. as all the explanations I have found were mainly focused to personal use, internet pages and so on. Have you seen Commons:Reuse?
With CC-BY-sa you don't have to print the license, just mention it. It's unclear whether text+image is a derivative work or an aggregate work. Lots of issues like that have never been tested in court, so we can't provide definitive answers. If you want to stay on the safe side, you can use PD and CC-BY images without hassle. Do you know of the Mayflower search engine? You can search for only images that meet specific license conditions. You could also consider asking the author, if they are a Commons user, to grant you permission to use the image in your magazine. I guess many users would be happy to do so.
For Attribution, if the user doesn't provide their real name, attribute their username. Like "Created by user pfctdayelise at Wikimedia Commons". It's not your responsibility to hunt down their real name. :)

I have seen the Commons:Reuse page, but it is exactly the sentence here "When re-using the work or distributing it, you must mention the license terms or a link to them. You must make your version available under CC-SA." that bothered me as I did not know how to apply it in the printed case. But if it is sufficient to mention the licence, I think it could be just done using its name and understood so that everyone can copy the picture from the magazine under the terms of the licence, right? Anyway asking the author is a good idea, I realized that there is a "talk page" for every author so probably even though many users here do not provide their emails or so, they could hear me asking there.

Help with PowerPoint import

I'd like to provide this that I created in Power Point. Thus far, the best I have found is to export it as an Adobe pdf file, but that does not get a thumbnail and can't be embedded in other articles.

Try this: make an image from the version.pdf

  • 1) click the photocamera-icone at the menu-line.
  • 2) than make a frame around the part you want to have in picture.
  • 3) go to the menu "copy" and copy that part
  • 4) Open photo program "Picture it!" or similar photoprogram
  • 5) Open new file. A white field should appear.
  • 6) chose your format: "landscape" or "portrait" or by customizing ; click "done".
  • 7) than go to the menu "paste". The picture you have copied from the pdf should appear in the white field.
  • 8) Save it with a suitable name.png or (name.gif).
  • 9) Eventually cut the superflous white from the picture. And your picture is ready for uploading at commons.

PDF is, or can be, vector w.r.t. illustrations, I believe, so if you can go from PDF to SVG via a converter, then work the image in Inkscape, that may be a better approach than taking a screen shot or capture and then converting the raster, which sometimes can introduce artifacts (Inkscape's converter is good, but not perfect). This pdf came from Power Point and scales nicely to very large, so it should be vector graphics. I failed to get the pdf to svg conversion to succeed from texterity.com, so if you can convert it, that would be great. WilliamKF 05:45, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
Better you don't create this images in Powerpoint, you should use Inkscape because you can create SVG directly. A conversion from one format to the other is never the best solution and should be avoided if possible. Double check

If someone could do me a favour and double check that the following uploads are okay, that'd be great: Image:Flag of Transylvania before 1918.svg, Image:Hudson Heights 187th Hudson River.jpg, Image:Hudson Heights Cabrini Boulevard.jpg. Copying files over from Wikipedia, and the FAQ states I need to include the 'revision history', which I assume only means that of the image and not the history of the page itself (ie changes to the description)? And is it okay that it's tagged with GFDL-self-with-disclaimers, even though it's not *my* image? I know it's got the 2nd GFDL one but there's no GFDL-others-with-disclaimers or similar, so I'm assuming that the two combined serves the same purpose. My question was a "how" question. Lets say Counter-Strike - you have to somehow show what Counter-Strike is with a picture, but screenshots seem to be forbidden for some odd reason. Wikimedia Commons, is for free license materials (GDFL, Creative Commons, Public domain, etc). You can't just upload copyrighted materials in Wikimedia Commons. If you are authorized to post the copyrighted material, you may upload it to the related project in the related language. Example: You can upload it in Wikipedia in English, the article about it is in Wikipedia in English, with the specified license. Eagleal | Talk 12:58, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Kampy, perhaps you want to read en:Fair use. The Wikipedia Guideline en:Wikipedia:Non-free content is different from the Commons guideline - mainly because Commons is a database for image content, not "fair use". I have uploaded several self-made photographs, for which I selected (or thought I selected) an all-rights-released license. Instead, though, I received a "this image does not have sufficient information on its copyright status" warning. How and where do I correct the copyright status of an existing upload? You cannot release your image into the Public Domain since it is derived from Image:Pygoscelis papua.jpg that is only released under GFDL. GFDL requires derivative works to be released under the same license, so you need to change the license to GFDL. --Matt314 23:03, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

I would like to upload a picture contained within my medical records. I understand that under US law, I possess ownership of the records themselves, but I was not sure if this translated into ownership of the copyright, ie, permission to release it into the public domain. Anyone know? And if so, does anyone know which license to place it under? Seeing as I didn't literally take the picture myself, although I'll maintain that I certainly helped create it. Problems with SVG Renderer

Currently some SVG-Graphics arn't displayed correctly or don't rendered at all (e.g. Image:Qsicon lesenswert.svg). So many articles in the german wikipedia are affected. The image displayed correctly before, but currently it isn't displayed at all. Any suggestions? --Niabot 16:43, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

A problem with photo orientation - Image:EN94 WKD inside.JPG

I don't know what to do - on my computer the photo looks OK, but when uploaded it always displays horizontally. How can I rotate it 90 degrees counterclockwise? :-) --Jan Stradowski 13:27, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Your camera saved the information about orientation in the metadata of the image, so the software on your local computer was clever enough to display it according to this information. However, the Mediawiki software that is used to run Commons/Wikipedia has not implemented such feature, so it does not turn the image. I downloaded the image, used the "lossless turn" function of IrfanView and re-uploaded the image. --Matt314 21:17, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
You can use the program exiftran to rotate the image and update the exif information in a correct way (if this program is available for your operating system) -- AnyFile 13:58, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

i do not understand the link

i do not understand the links between common and en.wikipedia : i have uploaded a pic ("Image:Bjork boot europa 2.jpg") on en.wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Bjork_boot_europa_2.jpg but i tought it was on common... thanks in advance - and i want to speed-delete it... This here is Commons, not en.WP. If you upload something at en.WP and want it to be deleted than you have to ask there and not here. We can only deleted pictures which were uploaded here. By the way, please do not upload this picture at Commons. It's a picture of derivative work and can't have a free licence. Some more information about the link: when you upload something at en.WP or some other WP you can use the picture only at that one project, but if you upload it here, all wikimedia projects can use the picture (without uploading it at their project). -- Cecil 13:33, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

New version of picture won't show

There may be a minor problem remaining: The small image that I see on the wikipedia page for the Turing switch appears stretched in the horizontal direction. Please move improved image to original filename

I have been a wikipedian for a while, but have only just registered an account on Commons. As a result, I can not upload an edited file under its original filename because I am "too new". Please move Image:Ephesus IchthysCrop Improved.jpg to Image:Ephesus IchthysCrop.jpg, I have re-applied better perspective correction from the original photo and improved picture clarity. --Mufunyo 00:20, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Help editing a picture

Photographs of shop fronts etc

I've taken a number of photographs of shop fronts, to illustrate articles on high street stores. As they include company logos/branding, is there a copyright issue or can I upload them to Commons ? ThisIsAce 20:50, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately, yes. Company logos are copyrighted, so they're not under a free license. If you want them to use in, for example, the English Wikipedia in articles, consider uploading them under a fair use license. Maxim(talk) 23:49, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

How to find images you want?

I have just about given up. When I try to make a categories that are useful to me (architectural categories) someone deletes them. Most links to the commons in wikipedia articles go to deleted categories. Who is the king of categories around here that gets to determine, for example, that to find Minarets you have to go to Towers first? The minaret I am looking for isn't there anyway, and since someone deleted my categories, I probably will never find it again. The usual syntax for pictures is :
[[Image:samsoncj_snail_07.jpg|thumb|100px|Nice caption]]

I want to upload a image capture (a screenshot) of Netstumbler software application in order to illustrate an article about this applicaction in the spanish version of Wikipedia, but I don't know if I must.

Screenshot are usually copyrighted images, so you should upload to es.wiki, as they're not under a free license. Maxim(talk) 18:58, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, it is not possible to upload the image. Spanish Wikipedia disabled uploads so the image cannot be uploaded there (and AFAIK Spanish WP never allowed fair use). The software you mentioned appears to be copyrighted, so a free screenshot is not possible. --Matt314 19:12, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

image copying

try as I might I cannot find instructions for the following. I wish to import from [8] to wikipedia some of the images concerning the maths of sundials. I plan to put into my wikipedia sandbox, try and convert to svg. and start translations and finally upload to Commons; or if possible do this all within Commons, then insert into the article. Hi Edmund,
Some of those images are already on Commons, so they can be used in any Wikimedia project right now: e.g. [[:Image:Beijing sundial.jpg], Image:AnalemmaVitruvii.jpg. I guess you are talking about the diagrams? They appear to be mostly be de:Benutzer:Fantagu.
It's up to you whether or not you transfer the originals to Commons. If you do, please be sure to use the CommonsHelper tool.
Otherwise, you're welcome to just upload the new ones you create. If you use the existing ones as a basis for the new ones, yes, you should keep the same license as the originals, and link to the original image page, and mention the name of the author of the original.
You will probably want to use Inkscape for converting the images to SVG. There is a little bit of advice at Commons:Transition to SVG but sadly not much.

Why can't I make the English part of the image description appear?

This is very weird (look at the "edit" window to see my translation). It is simply hidden, and I can't figure out why. All the characters I used are also used in the German version, so I can't figure out why this triggers something...

I even tried rewriting it from scratch.

Does the author of the svg image used the png to create the svg? If not it just another image that give the same result, but was not copied from the other. The only problem, in may opinion, can be if the first image has original, creative or artistic contents, in which case coping them would be a copy. But I can not think that an i into a circle can be considered creative, original or artistic. This is of course only my opinion. Consider for instance if someone write a computer program to compute the greatest common divisor of two given numbers. Then someone else see the program and want to write a new program that does the same thing. If the new program do not reuse the code it is not a copy. -- AnyFile 22:40, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

I've prepared some video clips demonstrating how to set up support for open file formats (see Spreadopenmedia). These are recorded on Windows and show the use of various software packages (e.g. CDex, Firefox, future ones to feature VLC, iTunes, Winamp). image sizing

i'm having problems with images in the commons 'not' resizing in wiki-articles, even when specifying pixel size i have two examples: en:Eberhard Waechter (baritone), and en:Johann von Herbeck. both use the standard image sytax: [[image:phoo.jpg|thumb|300px|caption of foo]], without any affect. any suggestions? thanks...cheers! --emerson7 | Talk 18:48, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

The images were uploaded in low resolution, the image handling software obviously does not support to enlarge the images (would not look good anyway), so they cannot displayed larger than 183 px or 180 px, respectively. --Matt314 12:46, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

I did some minor changes. You put GFDL in the work, but this would only be possible if the original image was GFDL, as well. As that image was only licensed under CC-BY-SA you also can only license it under that licensed (except you have permission from the author to release it under GFDL). --Matt314 08:46, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
