Admin[edit]

You are now an admin here on the Commons. Congratulations! Just remember that images cannot be undeleted, so please be careful when deleting them. User:dbenbenn 22:06, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Hi. I see you the only admins around. Have you notice that the edittools is broken. Borgx 07:20, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, deletion spree :)[edit]

I guess you know about Bad Old Ones. I created a template, {{Delete assist}} which should be put on subcats of 'Unknown'. I just put it on the month-level ones, if you want to put it on day-level ones you're welcome to. It will just automatically create the link to Bad Old Ones for that category.

Deletion w/o unlinking[edit]

Hello Zirland,

Yes, I somewhat shamefully admit, such reckless deletion I've been known in the past for is hardly in line with the perfectionist label I affixed onto myself. Recently, though, in fact, just one day ago, User:pfctdayelise's message at Template talk:Copyvio has done much to change my stance toward such deletions. I can assure you, that in the future, I'll notify the uploaders of such copyvios and ask them to remove the offending pictures. I am still hoping that CommonsTicker will notify people of deletions and encourage them to remove blanked images, but I recognize that deletions leave other projects in a battered state image-wise, and I'll most likely unlink images before I delete them from now on. Best regards, and sorry for all the havoc I caused, —UED77 21:28, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you deleted my photo of movie-poster of Sophia Loren. It is a film screenshot from 1955. Would it be ok if I tag it with this license?

deletion of Image:Ken.jpg[edit]

You deleted this image citing against policy [1] can you please elaborate as it is used on wikinews and I'd like to get it back. If its a no-fair use thing, I can re-upload it at wikinews (I'm geussing as I can't see the image descript page as its deleted). Look at this - wikinews:WN:CT. I'd be undeleting in a hurry and checking a lot more carefully if I was you... pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:06, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In actions like this we are screwing up their perfectly good page for no good reason at all. (The only good reason is: copyright violation.) No wonder they get pissed at us!!! Please delete copyvios not so-called "duplicates" as a matter of urgency... --pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:12, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(BTW, I undeleted them. Thought it was stupid to leave them when I could fix it myself.) pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:48, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely agree. Do NOT delete images which are in use unless they are copyvios. This is very important to maintain good relations with the other projects. Thank you.--Eloquence 11:14, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commons-l subscription[edit]

Hello Zirland,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 23:18, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Japan Expo 2006[edit]

Hi. I think your deletion of Image:Aki Shimizu 20060709 Japan Expo 01.jpg and Image:Aki Shimizu 20060709 Japan Expo 02.jpg was really quick. Rules of an event are not laws, so there no legal reason to delete them. Could explain, please ? Traroth 10:57, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I restored the media and listed it for discussion as deletion request. --Zirland 11:16, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Zirland, could you fix the categories on this user's images? eg Category:Wsy. I don't know if it's a good name or not... is it Czech? I'm not sure. thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:52, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

-- ArtMechanic 22:38, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

moon eclipse[edit]

deleted "Image:Moon eclipse cs.svg" (Duplicate to Image:Moon Eclipse cs.svg)

It was supposet to replace the original (size optimized original version), Moon eclipse cs fixed.svg was fixed version and Moon eclipse cs fixed2.svg was the final fixed version. Of those 4, the "Moon eclipse cs fixed2.svg" is the original and Moon Eclipse cs.svg is the duplicate (though it was uploaded by another user earlier, with more restrictive license than original)

Can you ressurect Moon eclipse cs fixed2.svg and replace Moon Eclipse cs.svg with it?

Governors of Mexico[edit]

Hi Zirland, I like to ask you why deleted the pictures of Governors of the states of Mexico, many of this pictures was uploaded by me, but others no and I think they have the correct license from the site or media of origin, in one case was a picture taken originally by me, and I upload the picture like self made work. --Battroid (Talk to me) 00:25 27 jul 2006 (CEST)

Zirland thankyou for your answer, I understand the case of the images from the mexican presidency, but some images are from the Senate of México, not from the presidency, and have this license Template:SenadoMexico, why this was delated? --Battroid (Talk to me) 11:35 27 jul 2006 (CEST)

I'm afraid I need to know the name of any image we discuss here. Generally, the deletion was set to PD-Mexico-NIT category only. --Zirland 20:26, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are a FUCKING IDIOT[edit]

I just can't believe what a fucking idiot you were by deleting the EVERY SINGLE PIC in the PD-Mexico-NIP category on a speedy delete just because YOU and THIS MORON spent two seconds looking at the Mexican Presidency website and saw a CC By-Nc-Nd 2.5 license. For your information, that license was implemented exclusively on NEW MATERIAL PUBLISHED BY THE PRESIDENCY!!!! I spent countless hours cropping, documenting, filling up every single field, from photographer to date of the event in order to make those pics available to everyone and then an idiot like you just come over and destroys everything!!!

You shouldn't be an admin in the first place. How can you get rid of dozens if not hundreds of pics without contacting the sources??? Once a pic is in the public domain it stays in the fucking public domain forever!!!!! There was proof of its license in the template and the template was attached to every single pic on that category. We have kept the e-mail on the Spanish Wikipedia since August 2004!!!

Ruiz 22:31, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless of this personal attack... how could you ever think that speedy deleting 120 images, without even making a simple attempt to contact the user who was the uploader of nearly if not all of them, when they are still in use - how could you ever think that was a good idea? That heavily used/established templates should always go through COM:DEL would hardly need to be said, I would have thought, but apparently it does. We are not in the business of "deleting at all costs". This is not one of your better judgements. pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:10, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
From many discussions I got understand, that copyvio images can be deleted even without unlinking. Correct me if I am wrong. Policy allows this, yes. But if you're going to do this, you'd want to be damn sure about it!
I checked the non commercial license on source web page http://ehecatl.2004.presidencia.gob.mx/tecnologia/ (well I cant read spanish, but CC logo was clear to me). Another hint... never delete stuff based on text in a language you can't read. It's just too dangerous and for Spanish, it's not like we don't have lots of other admins who could have done it.
It is easy to have 20/20 hindsight, but remember these things for the future - a tag should never be put to speedy delete without going through COM:DEL, and if there's one person responsible for a lot of stuff, it always pays to at least TRY to contact them before deleting dozens of their contributions. But anyway, what's done is done. pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:23, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have answered on Commons:Village_pump#Complain_about_User:Gildemax_and_User:Zirland and asked a nativ Spanish speaking admin to write to the PRESIDENCIA DE LA REPÚBLICA of MÉXICO if this imagens are really PD. I still doubt. --gildemax 17:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Logo UPB[edit]

Dear sir, may you send me an explanation why you have deleted the Logo of UPB? Actually it has all the rights to be publish by me there and I have provided every single information. Maybe you do not understand Spanish and it wasn´t clear for you. In that case, you can contact me and I can translate for you. Maybe you couldn´t talk with the authorities of the University that agreed to give me permission to publish it in Commons. I wait an answer or I will consider your action a vandalism. Thankks before hand and I please read also the letters from the person in charge to give authorization:

Monseñor Luis Fernando Rodríguez Velásquez RECTOR UPB Medellín

Un especial saludo desde la misión salesiana de Camboya. Como aficionado a la wikipedia, un sistema enciclopédico Internet, he comenzado a elaborar un artículo en inglés (y espero hacerlo pronto en español) sobre nuestra querida Universidad. Usted puede observar el trabajo que he hecho hasta el presente en el siguiente enlace:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universidad_Pontificia_Bolivariana

I checked deleted image File:Mainlogoupb.PNG and there are following problems:
  • Since its upload it was tagged with GFDL licence
    • In first edit you wrote "The copyright holder of this file allows anyone to use it for any purpose, provided that ... is credited."
    • Copyright © Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana – Social Communication Department, Medellín, Colombia
    • Later you changed the text to "Released into the public domain" ... GFDL license tag still placed
    • "it can be used for any purpose related to the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana"
  • At the end of the process, image was tagged as logo by other user and - because fair use logos are unacceptable on commons - deleted by me.
So, let's summary. It is public domain image, which can be used for any purpose, but only in limits of GFDL license and related to University. What a license hybrid mess. From my point, it has to be considered as unknown license at best. I will consult next steps concerning this image with spanish speaking admin. If it has free license, image will be restored. --Zirland 19:20, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

--> It is okay for me. The point is that the image was fully authorized by the directives of the University to be used by wikimedia and I have such authorization. I have to confess I still not getting aware of the policies concerning logos, but if we are going to eliminate all the logos of all the centers of studies around the world, it would be a great mistake, because an article about a university without its logo is as an article about a country without its flags. Therefore, if our policies are going in such way, let us start with deletions of flags, shields and so on. ...???...

==> Waiting answer: Dear sir, I am waiting your answer. It expends for me a lot of time to get all the permissions from the University to upload that file and it took just few minutes for you to delete it without any further investigation. It would be also nice that administrators that do not understand other language, get first advances from those administrators with the skill in the original language of the file uploaded. Please answer in my discussion page. ...Objection...

==> November 10, Waiting answer ==> I am a volunteer and I do it with all my pleasure, sir. You elected to be an administrator, so, please answer and take responsability for what you do. It is arbitrary to delete an image without following a clear process. Should I consider it vandalismo? ...Objection...

==> November 11, Message in the Village Pump: Aquí

So again Mister????[edit]

Well, I see you work hard. First you do not answer and second you insist in your official vandalism insisting that file is a copyright violation. I will investigate who gave you the status of administrator. If you continue being administrator, I will stop to contribute for wikimedia, if incompetency is right here and contributions are okay. I have the rights to put that file and you do not have the rights to delete it. If there is any information to be clarify, it is good to ask first and... sir, learn Spanish, it is the second language of the world. If you do not fix this problem in 48 hours, I will remove all my contributions. User:Albeiror24

==> Well, I read careful your Chat. It is especial to see how you do the things long and boring. If you thougth it was not clear, it would be easier to ask first to me. The University would provide any statment easily, it would take me few hours to take it. But you did a drastic decision and cause a bad mood. I do not need translators, as I do not deal with languages I do not understand. Now, please delete it and please, delete all my contributions, because I am in the way to resign from this proyect. I have many things to do and in stead to get any encouragment, I have to deal with persons as you. You delete a file and an user... Congratulations. User:Albeiror24

==> You can see my request of own deletion here. In a certain way you help me a lot, because I will use the time I used to dedicate to Wikimedia to my own projects. Thanks be to God I do not believe persons indispensable. Nothing is forever. What we do, would be change in the next generation. For that, really thanks. Try to respect more the work of others my friend. You are not a bot and, take it as a good advance: learn Spanish. Bye. This user is auto candidate to be deleted, because is real tired... Click off!

  • Please Mister Zirland, as you are so good to discourage users, please, I ask you to delete all the files I gave to Commons, those from my own work and those I have asked with permissions from all the organizations I am a member. Because I will use those work for my own projects. It is better to let people like you to do all the heavy work of Commons. Ex-User:Albeiror24 due to Zirland

The image shows special playing cards which are used in tournaments in order to provide players who are used to French suits the same comfort as to those who prefer German suited cards.

Please answer to de:Benutzer Diskussion:Roland Scheicher

Thank you very much - de:Benutzer Diskussion:Roland Scheicher

You have deleted this image as "dupe" [4]. This image was NOT a duplicate of any other image, and I did not request its deletion. Furthermore, the image was used in the German wikipedia. Please restore it immediately. --Rosenzweig 08:59, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have compared both images (Wildeck 04 and Wildeck 05) and they are fair the same. It was the duplicate. If you are not satisfied with my answer, you can contact any other admin and ask him to review my decision. --Zirland 09:58, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are misusing the privileges given to you. Even if the images are similar, they are NOT - I repeat NOT - the same, and they are NOT DUPLICATES. You are only allowed to delete obvious duplicates, this is not the case here, and I point you to this fact explicitly here and now. I again ask you to restore the image now. I am indeed not satisfied with your answer, but before I ask anybody else to do it, I will give you the chance to review your wrong decision yourself. --Rosenzweig 10:11, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And one thing more: the image you deleted was used in the German wikipedia. Even if you thought they were actually duplicates, you should at least have deleted the picture that was not in use. That you did not do that tells me that you didn't even look which images were in use before you deleted the image. This is very sloppy work, not something any admin could be proud of. --Rosenzweig 10:13, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I said, from my visual comparation images were duplicate. I stand on this statement. That is obvious duplicate indeed and (as you told me above) I am allowed to delete it. That is not misuse. At the time of deletion, checkusage didn't displayed any occurence, probably due to database lag. But the German Wikipedia has working Commonsticker utility, which was created for this purpose. -- Faithfuly yours Zirland
You seem to think that duplicates are what is similar to your eyes. That is wrong, a duplicate is the same picture, not a similar one. Any person that cannot look closely and precisely enough to see what really is a duplicate and what is not should not be an admin here, and you are obviously unfit for this job. You should not delete any images if you have such a broad and wrong concept of a duplicate. Consider doing something else. Thankfully, User:Panther looked more closely than you did, saw that there were no duplicates, and restored the image. --Rosenzweig 11:20, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Rage is something else. I explained what a duplicate is, what it is not, and that anybody who does not know this should not delete images. Anybody who - as above - persistently refuses to acknowledge the difference between duplicates and similarities is in my eyes unfit to be an admin, or, let's modify this, unfit to decide about deletions. --Rosenzweig 14:03, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is an old story with this administrator...!!! He does whatever he wants with no criteria no respect for others. Ex-wikipedian because him

Problem...[edit]

So sorry I wrote in French: I can't think why…

The problem is this: the other day I tried to upload this image, giving it the name Galatea.jpg. This gave me a warning that there was already an image with this name, and did I want to proceed anyway. I presumed that there would be two images with the same name, and went ahead. I did not think that uploading mine would knock the older image out!

But this is partly what has happened: the original image (in colour) remained, whilst the data on this colour image was replaced by my own comments. Disaster! And I cannot revert it…

I noticed that you deleted the image at one time (on 25 November). I don't know why, but if the image should still be included in Commons, can you revert to the data before I screwed up?

BTW the two images (one in colour and one B&W) are distinct and different images, one being a painting, and the other an engraving after the painting.

I am very sorry for this problem (still rather new on Commons) and hope you can clear it up

Many thanks and best wishes Nick Michael

Human Scrotum Tense and Relaxed.jpg[edit]

You deleted this image without a discussion as far as I can tell, characterizing it as "porn". I'm not sure what your motivation is, as you didn't say. The image was being used in the Wikipedia: scrotum article, and seemed to work well. It is not pornpgraphic, but anatomical. I can see how someone might have been confused, thinking it to be yet another vanity article. Perhaps the uploader was a vanity author, but it worked just fine in the article. Pornography is a subjective term, but it is hard to imagine how a picture of an isolated part of the human body could be considered porn. I would appreciate it if you would be more conservative, and less overzealous in the future. Atomaton 21:43, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I made a new upload. Redecke 13:10, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You deleted Category:Markets in Latin America and the Caribbean because it had {{Bad name}} on it with a reference to Category:Markets in South America. Two points:

  1. "Latin America and the Caribbean" is not the same as "South America", which is required for the use of {{Bad name}}.
  2. {{Bad name}} is only for use on files, not categories.

The end result of you deleting an incorrectly and inappropriately tagged category is that an area, the Caribbean, now no longer has a category. (Fortunately, I had created the category using the United Nations geoscheme so I don't think that there were any Caribbean images actually there.) Besides, referring to Guatemala as being in North America may be correct geographically but is confusing in the common political sense. If ever a proper deletion discussion was needed to iron out the issues involved, that was it. Please be more careful in the future. Thanks, BanyanTree 22:47, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! You have deleted image M102BVR.jpg. There are more images from Nordic Optical Telescope in Commons. All of them must be deleted? Winiar 11:44, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, they have to be deleted due to license. NOT images are under NonDerivative NonCommercial which is against Commons policy. --Zirland 05:19, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi.

You have removed an image that is linked to the Wikimedia logo mosaic. Please change to this one Image:SalagouRippleMarks.JPG and update A-Z galleries accordingly.
