First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

As you have already done for the source and the author, you have to put also the license in the image's page. You can find out the right one, looking in this page. Bye, --Filnik 12:57, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Boeing_XB-47D_taxiing.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. I noticed you've uploaded one or more images and I thought I should turn your attention to a common error.
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing! __ ABF __ ϑ 15:16, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Trekphiler!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. Patstuart (talk) 11:25, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Better source request for your images[edit]

Thanks for uploading your images. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the help desk or me at my talkpage. Thank you. Patstuart (talk) 11:25, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:F-20 on ttakeoff.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

and others nominated by yourself.

Hi, can you add in a bit more info than "redundant image, bad ID" for your deletion requests as this does not mean an awful lot. No image is redundant unless there is a duplicate image, and "bad ID" can be fixed by uploading it again with the right ID attached.

Also, when creating a subpage, paste whatever it says on the template after into the page, and don't forget to create an entry on the log. All the steps are on the template. You can also use the "nominate for deletion" link on the left hand side which will do a lot of stuff for you automatically :). Kind regards, -- Deadstar (msg) 11:03, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Parallax[edit]

I read your frustration where ever it was you wrote about it then I noticed the '57 Chevy in the Recent uploads and while I am quite certain that none of these vehicles started out life being pink, that is a beautiful image of a car. So I am here.

If you get the warning about the same image being uploaded while trying to upload that image with a nicer or more descriptive name, it means that you are being successful in doing that. So relax and ignore the warning. Or even more "tidy" would be to open that thumb of the warning image and make sure it has Badname on it (so it gets removed as a duplicate).

The commons as an image server does a lot; images uploaded here display instantly on other wikipedia that give the image name in a text correctly. Commons stores images so that others can find them and use them -- there is a good chance that I would have been looking for that image in particular, btw. So putting it where it can be found is kind of a must (a must in that it is really nice to do) and image descriptions also assist to help others find it when searching for it.

It seems really complicated to upload at the beginning -- I personally do not like the current default upload form, that can be changed either via preferences or by disabling javascript while uploading. If you have a bunch of similar images, pasting the image description and making the minor changes to it for each images is an option with javascript disabled in the browser you are using.

Commons is like a baby that can't walk but has eight arms -- complicated at first but each of the arms is doing something and needs something that the other arms might not. Having made that simile, I have no idea if I would ever have patience with a baby like that, but commons is cool since it comes with an off button. -- carol (talk) 03:29, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sometime, when things are quiet and you are done with your upload and other real life things, etc. That software can search an image collection of more than 3 million images and find the one duplicate based only on image stuff and (at least for me so far) "guess" correctly that it is a duplicate 100% of the time is kind of a miracle. So, that is something to consider when things are quiet for you. -- carol (talk) 04:44, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

1934[edit]

In your Image:'34 chrysler airflow side & hoodvents.JPG you might slightly blurr the faces of the two people behind the car in order to avoid violating their personality rights. --Túrelio (talk) 08:23, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, in Image:Custom taillight.JPG it might be wise to crop away your own mirrored image on the right sight of the image. --Túrelio (talk) 09:05, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am curious what makes this a wise suggestion. If there were less anonymity online, then there might possibly also be more honesty online. I don't consider that suggestion to be wise; Túrelio could you find a different word for it? Or own your own fears instead of passing them along within a mysterious suggestion? Like rephrase it this way: I would be frightened to put my image online and I wonder if you have thought about it. Or provide actual problems that have occurred from simple, honest, non-malicious uploading to a public image server when an identity is known. The classic car community are kind of cool; I am quite certain that if anyone in those photographs did not want their photograph to be taken, they would have moved out of the way. People can and do speak for themselves and I suggest it would be wise for Túrelio to do the same thing. -- carol (talk) 09:36, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, recently the commons photographers located themselves in the case that their photographic services might be requested. I would hesitate from requesting a photographer without some indication of what to look for. The last thing I would be interested in is a pansy-ass photographer who was frightened of the interface which he/she is using and the people he/she is giving the images to. There are only a few photographers here who have "the balls" to not fear recognition. That is a sad commentary about the photographers who are here, in my opinion. -- carol (talk) 09:42, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image subject questions[edit]

The template Badname should definitely go one one of the following images but I am uncertain which ones and reconstructing an upload history putting frustration with the interface is kind of easy, it is still more advantageous to ask. At least, it should be:

Then there were these engine images:

I have never seen anything like this and it scares me because one of the characteristics of my vehicle with the chrysler 318 and the not factory distributor cap was that it did not like to work (spark) if there was any moisture in the air, like light rain or fog. I used to claim (it was an exaggeration of course, but almost not) that my car would not run if it was over 70% humid out. These engines look like 3x that amount of trouble! Eek!!

So, researching that kind of engine I found en:Tri-Power which is a redirection to en:Pontiac V8 engine and here I found:

And I am thinking that they should all go into a category for Pontiac engines but I really don't know enough about this to do that and the category here does not exist yet if it is the right way to handle them.

Also, I got to read about how lovers of the 1966 GTO called it "the Goat" and the General Motors higher up yuckity yucks didn't adopt it which is so typical of stories from those companies. Harley Davison has done pretty well from listening to their fans/customers I guess and working their modifications into the designs of the new bikes. Public radio gave a list of terrible car names and on that list was Ford Granada which somewhat translates into "Big Nothing", heh.

Anyways, do they belong together? Your photographs and the other pontiac engine 'graphs? -- carol (talk) 08:36, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can't help cutting corners. I'm trying to get the quarter view & the frame's not wide 'nuf. Blame the camera. (That's a good excuse, right? ;)) On the 3 deuces, I don't think that's classic Tripower; they were on Chevys (if the usual rodder's habit of stuffing a 350 in almost everything is still current...). They were under the hood of a couple of '34 3-windows (the chrome hats on that blue number with the round lights, if it's up yet, the "barred" top on that beautiful chopped bronze-orange number). Thanks for the cat work; I never remember that.... And the '36/'38 is a '38; I think it got uploaded under a wrong ID & I haven't been able to fix it... If you can delete the "'36", feel free. Trekphiler (talk) 21:55 & 21:59, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So I should probably create or locate the Chevy engines and make certain they belong there. Just for my own knowledge and understanding of these images, that is 3 distributor caps per engine? I am having a difficult time dividing 8 cyclinders evenly by 3. My experience with firing order was really a bad experience and my understanding that the engine needs to be wired correctly did not come easy!
I should look through those images again. There was another vehicle which looked more like models that were 2 years different than the one in the description. Viewing the photographs and sorting them for here was not the same as being there, I think. Different situations. -- carol (talk) 22:22, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd avoid categorizing 'em as Chevy; these aren't stock (I don't think) on the Chevys in question, tho Chevy did offer a 3 deuce layout (IIRC); don't rely on my memory. How about "carburetors" or "fuel systems"? Or "custom car" (which certainly fits)?
As for 6 into 8 (& it's 6 barrels, or chokes), I've had some trouble with understanding that, too.... It helps to recall they're feeding a common plenum (the intake manifold), same as a 4-bbl, & one carb (the center one, I think, but don't quote me) feeds 4 combustion chambers, while the others feed 2 each. It's a trick setup, but not ideal; I've seen four deuce manifolds, too. & picture the GMC L6, with the Fenton (?) intake, with five carbs (5 deuces, I think... Yow.) Does it look cool Trekphiler ( ) 22:52, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Brakes and dark photos[edit]

In spite of the banner on my talk page....

Originals from the digital camera are kind of like film negatives but not so difficult to store (assuming there is an ability to put them on a cd or enough space on the hard disc). Dark pictures can be made lighter. They might not be award winners but most of my best photographs (the ones I liked and wanted) were taken in low light conditions.

Brakes are really important and the older I get, the more I really want to have them and have them in working condition. The list of things I did not hit when I was not in the mood to relearn how to repair disc brakes is impressive. That my mom wanted me to drive 30-40 miles with them broken was also impressive as was how far her "it might get broken car" could go in other directions. Manipulative guilt "trips" underwritten by Chevrolet and fail as quickly as a review of the person applying the trip can be :)

Living in the land of the people who worked for the different manufacturers of these vehicles. I don't know where Chryslers are made or where the people live. I drove a Pontiac in Ford area and I drove Fords in Chevrolet area. My university was by a Ford plant, so it is difficult for me to separate the auto culture from the school culture to know what was going on. Chevy land had insignificant, yet exaggerated and wrong family problems, like my new family refused to spend time with me and my biological family who also inhabited the area. A quick summary of that, if guilt is what fuels the people, the person applying the guilt should probably not have a history like my mom had with the people I know. And when living in Chevrolet land, some fall out from union rules (that is what I blame) made life too challenging. Like, working grandparents had evenings off (seniority dicatated who works day shifts) so a young working family with children would have to also hire baby-sitters that would be raising their children since they were not working while school was in session -- during the day. This is a system failure and the system had no family sense. Also, having been a child of divorce, if as a woman I could not get a job that they seemed to have available for women that would allow me to live in the area that I was working, I'll be damned if I was going to add another dependent to the cost of living. The herbal induced miscarriage was something I am still really happy about due to the systematic failure that was surrounding me. No medically certified people were involved with that either; that line of work seems to be dictated by people who want to tell you to make something work, not by conditions that are workable.

From bad brakes to freedom to make good decisions in less than 1000 words! I can fix drum brakes and I respect their dependability. I can prevent pregnancy on the female side but my experience with ending one that wasn't prevented was thwarted so no experience with that. The new "Automatic Braking System" scared me as the car did not stop when it was supposed to and having survived my first attempt at stopping a car on an icy road and the car spinning a perfect 180 degrees -- I actually apply brakes in a superior way compared to a mechanical replacement.

I totally understand the need for cars that mechanics get paid to fix, in the big picture of economic exchange and the health of the neighborhood and everything. But people have to be paid enough to live in that neighborhood and to have the additional money to pay for the services, like auto repair. The chevrolet land seemed to work on guilt, but when guilt fails, in come the absentee dads and the wrongness of the dividing of the money. The grocery store that I was working at had really good prices. Just as many financially secure people would shop there as the financially insecure would.

OH! Then you got renters vs owners. That woman, who only graduated from high school because her husband demanded it and did not go to college and thought she could find a new dad for her children at the high school while one of her children was attending it and had the closest equivalent to a socialized job in the capitalistic country they said I live in (the United States) seemed to think that her home owners taxes were supporting an infrastructure that my rent being paid was not supporting. Such a huge disconnect in the logic there is even worse than having the wires misplaced from the distributor cap to the spark plugs!! The fact that any part of the vehicle which has been my life is still working at all is due to that magical connection between the driver and the vehicle that I really believe in. Not being allowed to get to the engine to see what needs fixing -- more systematic failure!

Next time, perhaps: about when I was substitute teaching in autoshop and the 1998-2002 grads that were attending that class then had never seen a carburator.... -- carol (talk) 22:38, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am uncomfortable with how much the automobiles and the people that made them overlap in my weird experiences while living there and how they emerged here especially. Cars/automobiles (one of my favorite 'cars' was not a car but a van but I call it a car when I talk about the collection of automobiles I have owned and loved) they are not unlike my experience with sewing. Sewing is a task in which almost every single step in the process I dislike intensely. While proceeding through each step, I have been often admiring of construction techniques and noticing things that worked and things that did not work and the experience is never as terrible as my feelings for the task were. Automobile, operation, maintenance and repair were the same as this. There is a good chance that I was crying or fighting back tears everytime I had yet another opportunity to refine my knowledge of how drum brakes work and what to do when they stop working. Oh, and definitely when I realized that the clutch plate had a crack in it and the repair manual explained it in 12 easy steps the first step being "remove transmission". If I didn't cry then it was because I was too drunk or too high....
There is more, I will not write it here but if I did it might start "the vacation I took when my souvineer was a breaker bar". Once again, I am sorry for the spew here! -- carol (talk) 00:15, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Trekphiler!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects.

There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you.

Note

If you add categories please make sure they actually exist! --Denniss (talk) 23:34, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Cool picture. Go into edit and add the template cc-by-sa-3.0 if you took the photo yourself... and then all will be OK. The image has been put into a new category named Category:Saskatchewan International Raceway. You are taking awesome pictures around and about Saskatoon! Hello, Trekphiler!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:Sailor's bunk aboard fleet sub.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the file because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the file, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the file itself. Please update the file description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status. If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the help desk or me at my talkpage. Thank you.

International trucks[edit]

There is a discussion on this page whether images should be categorised as International trucks or International Harvester trucks.   Not many wikipedia contributors have contributed to the discussion or voted with their preference, but you have contributed to material on International Harvester.   I would be grateful, if you have the time, if you would share your own opinion on the page name.  And thank you. Flickr2Commons[edit]

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first").
