Your videos[edit]

Hello, please use also the video related categories/subcategories for your uploads. So it will be much easier to find an interesting video here in the ocean of pictures. Thanks and best wishes, --Pristurus (talk) 21:23, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

OK I will do that. Thank you Pristurus for all your contributions and great work! The Nature Box (talk) 22:41, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome, we need more videos here and in wikipedia. So please go on in producing clips... Greetings from rainy Germany, --Pristurus (talk) 23:37, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, as far as I can see Polistes flavus is an American species. For me it looks more like a Polistes olivaceus (yellow legs and antennae) but I am not a specialist in Asiatic hymnoptera... Greetings, --Pristurus (talk) 21:05, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pristurusǃ Oh yes, thank you very much for pointing that out. Apologies for my mistake -- Polistes flavus does indeed seem to be an American species, and the website below confirms that Polistes olivaceus is found in India. I have changed the video page now so it shows the correct name. Thanks againǃ (and thank you for all your efforts for WikiMediaǃ) The Nature Box (talk) 23:11, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Bringing Commons materials to YouTube[edit]

Hi, your YouTube channel seems to imply that you upload materials from Commons to YouTube. Is this correct? If so, where is the code? I am interested in doing this for the files uploaded to Commons by the Open Access Media Importer Bot. Thanks, -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 04:08, 14 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daniel, Thank you for your message. Yes, that is correct; almost all of the material on my YouTube channel comes from Commons. I am not sure what you mean by code? I manually uploaded the files to YouTube rather than using any sort of code. I'm sorry if I have misunderstood you here. Could you please explain what you mean about the code? Thanks The Nature Box (talk) 06:30, 14 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I had just assumed that you'd have automated that. Pinging User:McZusatz who I think uses a YouTube2Commons tool (though I can't find that now). -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 12:42, 14 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, I use help:youtube2mediawiki to transfer files. I never did it in the reverse direction but my assumption is that this is the easier problem to solve. --McZusatz (talk) 19:35, 14 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I see. No I didn't use any tool. No doubt there are some technical wizards who could do it though :) The Nature Box (talk) 22:47, 14 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your YouTube channel, request on my talk page[edit]

Hi, please have a look to my talk page. Maybe there are some problems with the type of license you used on YouTube. Greetings, --Pristurus (talk) 09:27, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

thank you[edit]

Thank you for uploading your beautiful videos of wildlife! I have used some of them to illustrate English Wikipedia articles. Best, -- Phoebe (talk) 06:46, 17 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Phoebe. Oh that's greatǃ I am glad they are proving of some use. Thank you very much. --The Nature Box (talk) 08:12, 17 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, maybe Bellis perennis is a misidentification. Please have a look at Talk:Main_Page#Media_of_the_Day_.3F_Bellis_perennis_in_Tokyo. Greetings, --Pristurus (talk) 20:41, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pristurus Thank you for your message :) Oh yes! Unfortunately that is my mistake and I misidentified it. I believe I have found the correct species now -- Annual fleabane (Erigeron annuus). This flower is native to North America but is now widespread in Japan also. I will take more care in the future, especially when the file is Media of the Day. All the best~

The Nature Box (talk) 21:27, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, we all are human beings, we all make mistakes... Regards, --Pristurus (talk) 21:53, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

CC on YT[edit]

Hi, if you upload CC video from Commons, why you use YT standard license instead of CC? --109.81.209.251 08:34, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, thanks for your message. Yes, I did wonder myself if this was OK. I have carefully thought about it and the reasons are as followsː
1) YouTube only allows a standard license or an attribution license, which is "Attribution 3.0 Unported." Attribution 3.0 Unported might be suitable for some Commons files, but certainly not all -- most have a different license.
2) I have carefully checked the Creative Commons license (for example, CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en). It saysː “You are free to Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format” and “Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially”. Please note the part saying that “commercial use” is OK.
With BY-SA attribution licenses, it says “ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original." But in my case, I do not “remix, transform, or build upon the material” – it is exactly the original material, and therefore uploading on YT's standard license is OK, I believe.
More details about reusing content outside Wikimedia can be found hereː https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Reusing_content_outside_Wikimedia
Sorry for the long answer. If I have misunderstood something with regards to the licenses, please let me knowǃ The Nature Box (talk) 08:47, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading videos[edit]

Hi TNB - how does one upload videos? I wanted to upload File:Kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) in the city 2.webm from here to go with File:Kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) in the city 1.webm, but I can't get it to work. Any clues, please? - MPF (talk) 18:36, 26 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MPF, I'm not sure if my way is the absolute best way to do it, but it seems to produce good enough results :)

1) First, I use Firefox as a browser. Then, you need to install two extensionsː FlashGot (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/flashgot/) and also Firefogg (http://firefogg.org/).
2) Next, go to the Flickr video you want to download, and play it in the browser.
3) While it is playing, you can click the FlashGot icon at the top right of your browser (the icon looks like a little piece of film) to download it.
4) Once it has downloaded, you go to Wikimedia "upload file page" (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard) and select the video. Firefogg should then automatically convert the video to webm format.

Points to noteː
1) If you want to upload files larger than 100 MB, you will need to enable the experimental "Chunked uploads" setting in your user preferences (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Maximum_file_size)
2) For some reason, Wikimedia's upload page doesn't seem to like apostrophes in the names of files, so it is best to avoid using apostrophes in the title of the video you are going to upload.

Hope this helps, and thank you for contributing to Wikimediaǃ The Nature Box (talk) 22:07, 26 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Been forgetting to reply - but when I tried to install Firefogg, Firefox (which I use too) said it was unsafe and warned me against installing it (so I didn't!). Something gone wrong at firefogg's site? - MPF (talk) 23:13, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's probably an incorrect warning. I have been using Firefogg without any ill effects, and the Wikimedia help page says "Firefox users are encouraged to install the Firefogg-Addon and use the UploadWizard to upload video. UploadWizard will then automatically convert the video file to highest quality using Firefogg (if necessary) and users do not have to fiddle with conversion parameters." (Please see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Video)
Or, if you still feel unhappy about using Firefogg, you could look for other software (freeware etc.) that can convert video to webm format first, and then upload it to Wikimedia. This site (http://www.online-convert.com/) can also convert to webm free of charge, but you have to pay to convert files over a certain size.
Cheers The Nature Box (talk) 00:07, 1 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'll check that out. MPF (talk) 11:12, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Howcheng, thank you for your message. I'm not sure how to do this properly, but if you click the Vimeo link shown in "Source" in the summary on Wikimedia, it takes you to this page
https://vimeo.com/155490675
Then, if you click "more", just under the video title, a window pops up. At the bottom of that window is a faint grey circle icon with a little person in it.
Finally, if you click that icon it takes to the video license page for Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC BY 3.0)
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
So I think it should be OK to have this video on Wikimedia. I wish there was an easier linking method. Please let me know if you know of one.

Export to Youtube not suitable[edit]

Hello "The Nature Box", you have uploaded my video File:Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix) cleans rain gutter.webm to your Google/Youtube channel putting it under the "Standard YouTube License": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkBJV5p-QJU. This is not according to the licence under which I published it and I hereby ask you to remove it as soon as possible. I want to decide myself, if and when I upload it to G/YT (and most likely on my own channel). --.js[democracy needed] 23:38, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi js, thank you for your message. I have had this argument/discussion a number of times on talk pages, and as I understand it the Share Alike license does allow a video to be uploaded to YouTube under the standard license. (I would like someone to tell me in specific terms why Share Alike is not compatible with YouTube.) Anyway, in the interest of avoiding "conflict" of course I will delete itǃ I have just done so, so it is now no longer on my YouTube channel. All the best The Nature Box (talk) 23:47, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that answer is very easy: just read the CC-by-SA 3.0 licensing terms, esp. "... You may not sublicense the Work.... You may Distribute or Publicly Perform an Adaptation only under the terms of: (i) this License; (ii) a later version of this License with the same License Elements as this License; (iii) a Creative Commons jurisdiction license (either this or a later license version) that contains the same License Elements as this License (e.g., Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 US)); (iv) a Creative Commons Compatible License." The "standard YT license" is no CC-by-SA 3.0 license, nor anyway near that. Just adding the CC-by-SA terms to the YT description does not remove the YT license. --.js[democracy needed] 01:36, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi js, I am not convinced by your answer with regards to the "You may not sublicense the Work" part.
Because it says here https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/License_Versions
"None of the Creative Commons licenses grant permission to sublicense the licensed material.”
None of the CC licenses allow for sublicensing – not just Share Alike licenses – but also for example the Attribution 3.0 Unported
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode
So, if sublicensinɡ means using a standard YouTube license then you cannot put any CC work on YouTube, including say Kevin MacLeod’s CC BY 3.0 work, which is ridiculous isn’t it? There must be a million YouTube videos with Kevin MacLeod's work on them.
I believe sublicensing means something different here, something like making material available for re-use under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
But the main point of my argument about why using CC by SA on YouTube is OK, is that this webpage https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/
says “You are free to: Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format.
Which is exactly what happens when you upload it to YouTube — you are redistributing it. The Nature Box (talk) 03:15, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still working on an answer trying to get an official written WMDE/WMF statement (only have it spoken yet). But please take into account that it is your duty to care about respecting licences, not the uploader's duty. I guess we both know why you do not provide any business adress for your commercial pages https://www.youtube.com/user/TheNatureBox/about https://plus.google.com/111027624205835591649 https://twitter.com/TheNatBox --.js[democracy needed] 08:42, 18 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi js, I'm sorry but I don't understand your last message very well. Does "WMDE/WMF" mean Wikimedia Deutschland and the WikiMedia Foundation? What have they got to do with the licenses? The licenses are issued by the Creative Commons organization. And I am respecting the licenses, as I thought I had explained. The "business address" point you made is really puzzling -- I am not a business, I am just an individual with a YouTube channel. The Nature Box (talk) 08:54, 18 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear The Nature Box,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Sudden change of Motd/2016-06-23[edit]

Hi, could you kindly tell me, why you have suddenly chanded my proposed Video of day for today? If nothing more, you made great chaos in the description of if for instance from Czech language, because you changed video but not this description. --Karelj (talk) 10:48, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Karelj, I'm sorry that I suddenly changed the Media of the Day (MotD) but I had strong doubts about the music featured in the video. I checked on the Vimeo page that the video came from, but there was no mention about the music. In my experience, people quite often put a Creative Commons license on a Vimeo video, but then add copyrighted music to itǃ Therefore, I put a deletion request on the video here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Port_of_Amsterdam_-_SAIL_2015.webm
and in the meantime, uploaded a version without audio, which I scheduled for Media of the Day for June 25. So, again I must say sorry to you for the sudden change but I believe that was better than featuring a Video of the Day that had copyrighted music on it, since that wouldn't do Wikimedia's reputation any good. Hope that explains my actions. The Nature Box (talk) 11:09, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, but when I see the correct licence confirmation:
This file, which was originally posted to https://vimeo.com/137207040, was reviewed on 12 February 2016 by reviewer INeverCry, who confirmed that it was available there under the stated license on that date.
than I believe, that everything is OK and I work with file as whole as certied material. So if you think, that User:INeverCry is dooing someting wrong you should to dicsuss this with him. Anyway I shall stop my work on Video of day lookig for from now, because this is only wasting of time, which I can spent more effectively dooing other work in Commons. Good luck with everyday choosing the VOD.--Karelj (talk) 13:21, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Karelj: , @The Nature Box: Sorry for the confusion. This is totally my fault. I'm careful about these reviews, but now and then I mess up on one. I'll be extra careful with these in future. Again, my apologies. INeverCry 18:15, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Karelj: , @INeverCry: No problems at all. As INeverCry says, without any other info, the safe choice is to use the version with no audio. And I know very well how easy it is to not notice audio in a video, I've done it myself many times. Karelj, I'm sorry you feel it was a bad mistake or the wrong choice to move the Video of the Day. Please go on choosing media for videos of the day, because this was nothing personal against you at all, and I think it is a very rare occurrence. Also, could I point out we are all volunteers here, and of course people make mistakes, so things like this will always happen now and then. File:Map of Mejiro-no-Mori 2016 11 30.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Pipevine swallowtail (Battus phileno).webm. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Retouched Box school photo re-uploaded under a different name[edit]

Hello. I have split off your retouched version of File:Church of England Primary School, High Street, Box (geograph 5023674).jpg into a separate file, File:Church of England Primary School, High Street, Box (retouched).jpg and reverted the original. I've also updated en:Box Primary School to refer to the new name. I did this because Geograph Britain and Ireland wouldn't accept a retouched picture like this[1], so I feel that making this change is more than the "minor improvement" allowed by COM:OVERWRITE. I hope you don't mind. --bjh21 (talk) 22:46, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

File:Comparison of size of orca and great white shark.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

A file that you uploaded to Wikimedia Commons from Flickr, File:Lincoln's sparrow (Melospiza lincolnii).webm, was found available on Flickr by an administrator or reviewer under the license Noncommercial (NC), No derivative works (ND), or All Rights Reserved (Copyright), which isn't compatible with Wikimedia Commons, per the licensing policy. The file has been deleted. Commons:Flickr files/Appeal for license change has information about sending the Flickr user an appeal asking for the license to be changed. Only Flickr images tagged as BY (CC BY), BY SA (CC BY-SA), CC0 (CC0) and PDM (PDM) are allowed on Wikimedia Commons. If the Flickr user has changed the license of the Flickr image, feel free to ask an administrator to restore the file, or start an undeletion request.

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I just want to ask what the purpose of File:Wiltshire no numbered districts.png is, which you uploaded. Is it just to show the districts, unnumbered (in which case, Swindon is missing)? Or to be an outline of the county, in which case another title that doesn’t mention districts would be better. Also, I’m not the author - the file is derived from one created by User:Nilfanion. File:新規運転免許証(大型二輪).png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Thanks, great idea![edit]

I’m obviously influenced by other websites, but when I just saw your image "Leopard_seal_human_comparison.jpg" I so wanted to upvote it, that I’ve come here to express my gratitude for this picture and the idea behind it: that such a picture conveys the size of an animal much more effectively than numbers. Thanks a lot, I hope this can be done for many more animals! Geke (talk) 11:01, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
