Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Improper license[edit]

Svedjebruk, I created a category Category:Svedjebruk by Per Martin Tvengsberg for files related to this book. However many files have issues with their licenses. Since Commons only hosts free licensed files, we are trying to track down the authors of all files and make sure that the files are in Public Domain or they were released under free license by their author. Ticket:2013040210010711 certifies that text and the photographs by Per Martin Tvengsberg are released under free license, however it is not relevant to images of other authors. For example File:Jussisaun.JPG is by "Helmi Virtaranta" and File:Kaisa.JPG is by "Helmi Helminen Nordberg" or "Helmi Helminen", so we need their names as an authors, the years the pictures were taken as a date, info where the photographs come from as "source", and OTRS email from him/her to certify the free license. Per Martin Tvengsberg is not the author of those photographs and can not claim the authorship in the file description or release them on CC license. Thank you for helping me making Category: Svedjebruk by Per Martin Tvengsberg. I was asked by: Kåre-Olav (diskusjon) 11. mar 2013 kl. 22:57 (CET) to scan the hole book to Wiki Commons. I have now scanned the hole book as you see. The pictures are part of the book if you look closely. For example File:Jussisaun.JPG by "Helmi Virtaranta" you find on the file: 18-19 . side i boken Svedjebruk ISBN 978-82-93036-00-5,.pdf. The permission, Ticket:2013040210010711, has been given after written permission of the Publisher to transelate the book and put it on Wikisource. We tried that. But on Wikisource we were told not to up loud the picture files there, but use Wiki Commons for up loading the pictures.Kåre-Olav (diskusjon) 14. apr 2013 kl. 18:15 (CEST) The pictures should, by this info, be covered by the OTRS permission. Your project must be quite confusing, since you hear different things from different volunteer users and the advice can be incomplete and contradictory. It is extra confusing since it sounds like what you are trying to do is not what people usually use WikiSource for, which is to start with old public domain book, scan it and transcribe it (recreate the text based on printed pages). In those cases books and images are usually in Public domain. In your case, you seem to try to add recently published book to Wikisource, and you probably have to text of the book, which does not have to be retrieved by scanning the book.
  • About the OTRS, it is valid for all the work by Per Martin Tvengsberg, that includes text and photographs taken by him. All other images should be treated like any other image on commons, You can upload them but you have to provide informations about author, source, and license. Some of the images, like File:Jussisaun.JPG, might be still copyrighted and will not be allowed on Commons or on Wikisource. Read COM:LIC for more information, but in most cases the author like "Helmi Virtaranta" would have to be dead for more than 70 years or he/she (or his heirs) would have to upload the file by himself or he (or his heirs) would have to send us OTRS email confirming that the image license.
  • About PDF scan of the whole book: it is usually needed because it is used by OCR software to retrieve the book text, than it is needed since people at Wikisource are trying to format the pages to resemble the printed book. However since you already have the text, you do not need to upload the scans to retrieve it. However it might still be good idea if you can prove that all the photographs in the book are released using free license (see previous bullet). If all photographs are OK than, you should scan the whole book into a single PDF (or DjVu) file. See for example File:Ambulance 464 by Julien Bryan.djvu used by s:en:Ambulance 464. Single sideways pages like [[:File:2-3. side i boken Svedjebruk ISBN 978-82-93036-00-5,.pdf]] are quite useless, especially since they have no license ({{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}). I think the best course would be to delete them for now and reupload (single upright PDF file) only if image situation is clarified.

The upload of the book has a single purpose; to verify that the pictures are a part of the book. Sideways are still showing the pictures. My understanding was that the pictures, by showing that they are a part of the book, was covered by the permission. Because on the first page, and on the given permission it says : “This publication may be quoted and used. Copyright rules dictate that the source reference is given. “. And under this quote ,you find the permission. See: http://no.wikisource.org/wiki/Side:Boken_p%C3%A5_norsk_Prosjekt_1.pdf/1 Are you 100% shore the pictures is not covered by the permission? The book with the pictures is published with a printed permission to anyone to use it's content. Text and pictures. My understanding is that author and the publishers are allowed to give permission to to the content they create but not for works created by others. Publishers might have bought rights from the photographers for the book publication, just like today's newspaper bought rights from the photographers to publish their photographs, but the photographers still hold the copyrights to their works and it is their permission we need. I have a copy of the Publishers mail to Wiki and you are right. The Publisher only talk about the text. Not the pictures. If we can leave the pictures for a while on Commons I start the work to get the permissions. Most of the pictures are from Museums created to spread info about this culture and I hope it will be easy to get the permissions. Can you please not delete the pictures? Here is the email:

Svedjebruk, it seems like the images that have incorrect licenses are below ( and matching PDF files). For some of the recent files, like the ones by Erki Animägi, the photographer should send OTRS email, if possible. Some older photographs might be in public domain, if photographers died more than 70 years ago. I am in no hurry to delete those files, but I will nominate them for deletion, so we can track them. That will give you few months to resolve those.

Was an OTRS ever submitted?[edit]

Just wondering whether an OTRS request ever submitted as discussed at Commons:Deletion_requests/File:1-5-seeds_1.jpg. I have had to comment out a couple mentions of files at English Wiksource, and if the OTRS was submitted, we could look to some undeletions.
