Moving images from de:Wikipedia to the Commons[edit]

Thank you for moving images from the German Wikipedia to Commons. Please remeber that there are some rules which have to be observed. If the needed information is not present on Commons the image can not be deleted in the German Wikipedia.

 • In general, be careful to preserve all of the information available about the image, always copy the image description and state who created the image. The Commons Helper will create a full summary that you can copy and paste into the Commons upload page. Please review the created summary and correct manually if necessary.
 • Tips for dealing with images with missing copyright or source information are available at Wikipedia:Untagged images. It's probably best not to move these images until these problems are resolved or these files will be deleted at the Commons soon after.

Thanks --gildemax 20:04, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You uploaded this image which you claim to be your own work. On the upload page you agreed to place it under a Free license but did not specify which one. Please do so by adding a suitable copyright tag.--Panther 06:25, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I thought I had done this. I have corrected it now. Strobilomyces 18:38, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you can make a cat for the genus, or put the old family cat back. Whichever of the two options you choose, imho it would be good to add a remark to the description of the image, saying you are not certain of the exact species - else someone else will probably add it to the species gallery again ;-)

kind regards,

TeunSpaans 11:09, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah! Now I understand the reason for the problem. I had put the wrong name in the description of the photo. Also there was a mistake in the category line. Thanks for trying to put it right. Strobilomyces 21:27, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just answered your question at the graphics lab and I wanted to also say that the description included with the image is really really nice -- it would be nice if all images were as well documented as that one. Without over-documenting them. You managed to hit the mark with that one, I think.

Thanks -- carol 23:44, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you're right -> look at the cup (it's pink). Thanks, I'll fix that. Puchatech K. 13:06, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Valued image closure[edit]

Hi Strobilomyces,

I noticed you did the promotion of your nomination yourself. This is OK, and I just wanted to drop a note to say that you have done everything right. I hope the instructions were not too hard to follow? You are very welcome also to close a few other VICs, which are due for promotion or decline. There is a heap to close right now and the closure has not yet been automated with a bot (work in progress). Any help would therefore be appreciated. If several of us close a few once in a while, the workload is not that high... Cheers, and I hope you are enjoying VI.

Happy editing, -- Slaunger 19:52, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

djvu -> jpg[edit]

If you give me a list of pages to extract as images, I'll upload jpegs for you. Or, if you'd prefer, I can tell you how to do it yourself - it is a bit complicated, and involves the use of a couple of different freeware software packages, but I'm sure it's nothing you can't handle.Hesperian 23:28, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for the offer. I'll make a list of some pages sometime soon (I'm a bit busy in the Real World at present). Strobilomyces (talk) 18:55, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've already got a script to pull the pages out, and I'll upload with Commonist, so list as many as you want. It doesn't make a scrap of difference to me if you list one plate or every plate. The hard bit is figuring out which page numbers contain the images of interest, which is your job. Hesperian 22:51, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, in Sowerby's "Coloured Figures of English Fungi...", the pages which are of interest as .jpg images are the odd-numbered ones from page 61 to page 1093 (517 pages). I started to make a list of the ones which I thought I could sensibly add to Commons (61, 63, 65, 73, 75, 77, 79, 87, 97, 99, 101, 109, 111, 113, 115, 117, 119, 121, 123, 125, 127, 129, 131, 133, 135, 137, 141, 143, 145, 147, 149, 151, 153, 155, 161, 169, 171, 175, 177, 181, 183, 191, 193, 195, 197, 199, 201, 203, 205, 207, 209, 211, 213, 215, ...) but the others are probably also useful - it is just that I don't know much about the small fungi, and the old annotations of them are likely to be outdated. But if you could do all the odd-numbered pages in range 61-1093, that would be great. Then I would link some of them to relevant mainspace Commons pages and add explanations. If you think it would be better to start with a smaller section, that would be fine too. Strobilomyces (talk) 20:01, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Close but no cigar I'm afraid. There are no plates between pages 300 and 350, nor between pages 590 and 705. No harm done but, as I picked up the problem while trying to match plate numbers to page numbers. I also noticed that there are a few plates missing near the very end of the DjVu file; e.g. no 437. I'm uncertain whether these actually exist.
There are 435 images; you will find them in Coloured Figures of English Fungi or Mushrooms and Category:Coloured Figures of English Fungi or Mushrooms. Since the originals are preserved in the DjVu file, feel free to upload cropped or otherwise restored versions over the top of these.
Hesperian 01:29, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It looks very good. It is much easier to look at the .png files than the djvu pages.Strobilomyces (talk) 21:01, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh bugger; I got those years from w:James Sowerby, and didn't bother to check them. What a shame to have uploaded all those images with the wrong years. Feel free to correct any you update; I will try to figure out an efficient way to fix them all. Hesperian 13:12, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am very impressed by your persistence. Hesperian 14:23, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's quite interesting sometimes. Strobilomyces (talk) 14:51, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fungus identity disputed[edit]

Hello, Strobilomyces!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Dear Strobilomyces/Archive1-20, I reassigned your images File:Solidago virgaurea Baiersbronn 20090810 2090.JPG and File:Solidago virgaurea Baiersbronn 20090810 2092.JPG to Senecio ovatus. They cannot show Solidago virgaurea, e.g. because of the form of the inflorescence (pseudoumbel, not paniculate looking almost racemose) and also because each flower head has only about 5 ray flowers (not the usual 6 to 12 of Solidago virgaurea). There is a possiblility that this is actually a different species from Senecio nemorensis agg. (which includes Senecio ovatus), but I do not believe that the involucral bracts are glandular or the upper leaves clasping the stem. So the ID should be correct at least according to "Die Farn- und Blütenpflanzen Baden-Württembergs", but I cannot completely exclude Senecio germanicus (according to newer floras). -- Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 21:49, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Parque-Museo La Venta[edit]

Hi Strobilomyces, for images taken in the Parque-Museo La Venta please use Category:Parque-Museo La Venta. Greetings, -- Ies (talk) 20:21, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I think perhaps I have made a mistake here because now I think that "Parque-Museo La Venta" is just the paying museum/zoo and the freely accessible park outside (where I photographed the coatis) is "Parque Tomás Garrido Canabal". I took one other photo which is from outside, but shows selva inside the museum/zoo. Strobilomyces (talk) 20:33, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I will leave the categorization Category:Parque-Museo La Venta as the coatis pass in and out of that area. Strobilomyces (talk) 21:08, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Stobilomyces, I just posted a new image of Auricularia mesenterica and noted that you disputed the identification of one of the previous images. I agree. But I believe that the other ones are doubtful as well. Regards. --Jymm (<span class="signature-talk">talk</span>) (talk) 11:05, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Jymm. Thank for your comment - because of this I have removed the Trametes image from the Auricularia mesenterica page. I don't know the species from my own experience, but I don't agree with you about the other 3 images. Looking at my reference books, it seems to me that these photos could easily be A. mesenterica, the top of which gets covered with a hairy multicoloured layer. Your photo shows a whitish scurfy covering, which I think may be the start of the same phenomenon. Strobilomyces (talk) 22:16, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorted fungi[edit]

Hi, I have cleaned up Category:Fungi. This means that Category:Unidentified fungi is full to the brim. In many cases ID is easy enough because the common name is given, but I was too lazy to look them up (also I am not a fungus expert). If you like, round up some of the other fungus people and ID some of the content, thanks!

(If there was nothing in Category:Fungi by country, I have used "Nature of [country]" instead of "Flora of [country]" for geocategorization, because it is plain wrong to throw fungi in with all these trees and flowers - a kingdom to whom a kingdom is due! ;-) But many fungi are still geocategorized as "flora".) Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 21:23, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

Your image does not show the typical yellow/olive - olive/brown cap which contrasts with the blood red gills. Your image looks more likely to be C. orellanus / C. rubellus.

See: http://www.gmvmonza.org/schede/orellanus.htm

Captainpixel (talk)

The gills had a striking blood-red reflection, which I think is shown in the photograph, and which I associate with the "Sanguinei" group of Dermocybe. I think C. orellanus and C. rubellus are not possible due to the spore size. Could it not be just a slightly old C. semisanguineus? Strobilomyces (talk) 15:57, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I also took this identical photo at the same time but in natural light, and it shows the colours better. It seems to me that the colours are OK for C. semisanguineus, but it is going darker at the centre. Anyway my photos are not very good and I will reclassify them as unidentified.
