Deletion requests[edit]

Thanks for fixing this. Pardon the poor naming, I don't think I was aware it was volume two when I got it. I found volume 1 from the new scan you linked, so I'm uploading that too. cygnis insignis 17:17, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't even notice! I think I'll reupload Volume 2 under a matching name, and delete it under the current name. Better to do it while there are only a dozen or so Page: pages to move. Hesperian 23:56, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Hesperian!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

improved image[edit]

Definitely works better on the page. When you say "viewing flipbook" do you mean at the site or a 'flippy'? I couldn't duplicate your method, but I'll persist if clarify where I should be looking. cygnis insignis 04:58, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

 1. Go to http://www.archive.org/details/williamblakecrit00swinrich
 2. Click on "Read Online"
 3. Navigate to required page (probably best to click on single-page view first)
 4. If the zoom is not 100%, click the "+" button until it is.
 5. Right click on the page (or, alternatively, do whatever it is you Mac-users do to bring up the context menu)
 6. Choose "Save image as..."; or "view image" then File|Save.
The image you get from this method is a jpg, which isn't ideal, since the format is lossy, and you don't even have control over the fidelity of the image that they serve you. If you want to be obsessive about image quality, the ideal solution is to click instead on "HTTP", then download jp2.zip file (typically hundreds of Mb), unzip it, identify the required jp2 file, convert it to png, then upload that.
Hesperian 11:23, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I should have tried an alternate browser: my FF was the issue, Safari was fine. Is the file type an issue; should I have converted to png or renamed the file? cygnis insignis 16:13, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Best to convert to PNG, I think. The PNG file will still have JPG artefacts in it, but at least it will be theoretically possible to upload a better version over the top. Hesperian 23:11, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I started to fool around with the decorative elements for a work. Can you the delete the consequences of my woeful ignorance of basic image manipulation, Category:Poetical Sketches (Shepherd reprint) and its contents? cygnis insignis 16:26, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Help?[edit]

I was wondering if you could somehow rollback the uploaded changes I made to File:Triphyophyllum distribution.svg. That'll teach me to play around with something I don't understand. All I wanted to do was remove Guinea from the distribution and crop it a bit more to include just Africa but failed. Much appreciated. --Rkitko (talk) 02:25, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please help replace this outdated license[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

The images we would like you to check are:

We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine[edit]

Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. And since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 14:22, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Biodiversity Heritage Library on the Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Hi Hesperian! I'm working with User:Jean-Frédéric to link Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) images with their corresponding pages on the BHL website. I think that'd be a great way to build a closer relationship between BHL and the Commons, leading to more and better scientific illustrations for the Wikipedias and other Wikimedia projects. As somebody who's uploaded a lot of BHL images to the Commons, I'd love your feedback on how we're doing, and your help in making this project awesome. Deletion of duplicate images with slight differences[edit]

A few months ago, a user uploaded hundreds of poorly categorized files of Boston (which I have been cleaning up), and paid so little attention that they uploaded some of the files two or even three times. Another user performed minor crops to straighten images, remove frames, and remove small watermarks. These crops were well done; they are logical and make the images usable for article use. Any information lost is well preserved in the image history. Hence, I have been nominating the duplicate files for deletion; even if they are not now pixel-for-pixel identical, to make them useful would result in cropping them exactly as the originals have been cropped, thus creating an exact duplicate.

A few weeks ago, you declined deletion of File:Milk Station, Washington Street tunnel looking south (14226879530) (2).jpg, which I had nominated as a duplicate, under the grounds that it was not an exact duplicate. The original file, File:Milk Station, Washington Street tunnel looking south (14226879530).jpg, had previously received the crop. Based on the rationale I've outlined above, would you be willing to reconsider deletion? There are several dozen of these duplicates which serve no useful purpose whatsoever. Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:56, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pi.1415926535, nice to meet you.
I can certainly imagine some purposes for which we might wish we had retained the original. I could not imagine the City of Boston Archives themselves cropping the physical original!
My understanding of deletion is that the community decides, the administrators merely enact. By rights every single proposed deletion should be debated by the community. But that is insane, it would waste the community's time. Instead the community has defined some narrow areas where administrators may delete files on sight. But in any doubtful circumstance, we should still go back to the community to check what it wants. Therefore I think the proper thing to do is to discuss the file at Commons:Deletion requests. Sorry, I don't mean to waste your time, but I really think we do not know for sure what the community's opinion on this would be.

2010 uploads[edit]

I have been, for lack of a better word, enjoying some of your 2010 uploads and I have a few questions.

First and most important, did you use upload software which is not the usual wiki-gui based upload methods? If so, could you share it?

Second, I was looking at a djvu file you uploaded and there was a complaint about it being based on jp2 and therefore useless for w source. I just made a djvu file which I am remaking because I used "eng" for the ocr language setting and it is clearly latin. That file used pbm and ppm files and I started to wonder if this file might also be useless for wiki-source.

More compliments about your 2010 uploads, it is really wonderful to find perfectly good pngs amongst the flickr/jpeg litter here. Thank you so much! -- RaboKarbakian (talk) 16:50, 18 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I heard Robt Powell give a talk on Yate when he was recently in the country, I'll pass on a couple of things that were discussed. He demonstrated the virtues of black and white photography in showing trees and landscape, bringing attention to form and away from any noise that colour produces. One grand old specimen was at the edge of a canola field, the field of flowers was included in his image because he was taught to not tilt the camera (which distorts the subject). The original image was garish blobs of blue, green and yellow, but once converted to B&W it showed the Yate's graceful and mallee-like form. His stuff is online if you want some inspiration. Hello Hesperian[edit]

I see you are a Commons admin and I am wandering if you can help me or at least point me in the right direction. I am mostly involved with English WP so don't know my way around Commons too well other than to upload images. It turns out that I just uploaded 2 files (File:Periódico El Eco del Comercio (Ponce, Puerto Rico - 5 de Julio de 1852) (DP29).jpg and File:Periódico El Ponceño (Ponce, Puerto Rico - 25 de Marzo de 1854) (DP30).jpg) and overlooked removing my personal information from the files before the upload, thus disclosing my real name in the files' metadata. Of course the reason I use "Mercy11" is because I want to keep my real name confidential, which my desire to contribute those 2 files has now put in jeopardy. Can you delete those two files so that my PII isn't public? I can then re-upload them again without that PII information included. I prefer to keep this matter confidential and so don't want to post in a public forum for all admins to see. Much thanks in advance, Mercy11 (talk) 01:11, 10 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons![edit]

Dear Hesperian

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC[edit]

Hello Hesperian,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hello Progosk. Yes of course. Hesperian 00:30, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Do you, by any chance, know of (or have access to) any other handwritten holotype notes of Labillardière's, with similar musings about his derivations? Progosk (talk) 18:38, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No. Not unless there are further such images in Nelson's PhD thesis, a copy of which I may or may not have and be able to find. Hesperian 00:42, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK - thanks for getting back, in any case. Progosk (talk) 11:15, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
