User:Andressing - a little help?[edit]

Hi Spangineer, maybe you can help me. I'm not familiar with blocking procedures - would a short block be appropriate for a user that continues to upload pictures without source information after warnings (that they don't respond to)? Maybe you could leave a note in Spanish? I think the user speaks Spanish. Thanks for any advice/help. pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:08, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, good call. pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:39, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have another one for you...would you mind putting a short translation on User talk:Lohen11? This user has a strange mix of images with no license, apparently old images with Creative Commons licenses (?!) and seemingly ok pictures with GFDL. Because of this odd mix I would ask them to explain the source of every photo they have uploaded so far before uploading any more (including explicitly stating "I took this photograph" for self-made works). pfctdayelise (translate?) 06:50, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, nevermind... I figured out this user speaks Catalan, and asked User:Martorell to contact them. Thanks anyway. pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:15, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Ennio De Giorgi.jpg[edit]

Hi, Spanginner, and thank you for the advice. At the beginning, i didn't know if that image was PD, but i asked at the site where i took it[1], and they told me that the photo is PD, and so edited the page. Now i'm sure we can use it. I hope is enough :) And forgive me for my english...;) Bye —Aubrey 23:01, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images from English Wikipedia[edit]

Hallo, i did try to put two images from the English Wikipedia to the Commons (Gillis Grafström and Jeff Buttle) to use them in the German Wikipedia. However what is given there as a licence does not fit to the selection available here. Please, could you explain how i can manage to keep this images here? Thank you. marking no license or no source[edit]

Hi Spangineer, when you mark images as "no license" or "no source", please also notify the uploader. There is a small line on the template that you can copy and paste on their talk page. Thanks! pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:20, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uploaded some PSU images[edit]

I uploaded four pictures, they're are in the PSU category. I used license tags in the summary, but I noticed that when I look at my gallery, under the tags column its says "No License". I see it says that on some of your PSU photos as well. Is that a problem? RockinRob 03:04, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commons-l subscription[edit]

Hello Spangineer,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 23:19, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

If you consent for statistics to be published about your actions as an administrator, please sign here: Commons:Administrator permission for statistics. (I expect that most people will not have a problem with it unless you are especially concerned with privacy.)

Also, please be aware that we now have a Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. Please put it on your watchlist, if you haven't already!

Thank you for your comments in Lar's recent RfA![edit]

Dear Spangineer: I would like to thank you for your support in my recent RfA which passed 20 to 1. I really appreciate the trust you've placed in me. Please help me be a better admin by giving me feedback when you think I need it, and praise when you think I've earned it. You're an old commons and en:wp hand so your support is especially gratifying. I greatly look forward to working with you. ++Lar: t/c 04:55, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I chose LEGO to illustrate my thank you messagess, because LEGO is a system that we build things with. Commons holds the building blocks that other wikis use to make great things. Without Commons images and media, other wikis would be much poorer. Let's help build the greatest freely available intellectual collection the world has ever known... together.

Category:Granville Elements of Calculus[edit]

Hello,

Could you explain to me why you moved "Category:Granville Elements of Calculus" under "Category:Scanned English text" when it only consists of the illustrations from the work, not the scanned text? Thank you. — RJHall 18:29, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, because it doesn't make sense to categorize things by the way we expect them to be used. For example, I wouldn't put images I intend to add to a Wikipedia article in Category:Wikipedia. We don't know how the images will be used in the future, so we instead categorize them by source. In this case, since you have a category of images from a single work, it makes sense to put the category in "Scanned English texts", since they are digital copies of a work (or "text") written in English. Hope that makes sense. --Spangineeren ws (háblame) 22:53, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. Well my problem then become that I am using those images for a very specific purpose, and if those images get renamed (for example) then I end up with a broken book in wikisource. Perhaps it would make more sense to put the images in wikisource after all. — RJHall 16:04, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Borders[edit]

Yes, absolutely. I apologise for that, got caught up in what I was doing and forgot to check the tags. Should newer pictures be modified in the same way, even if they don't have the original tag? Or can borders be removed from them and replace the original?

Apologies again, and thank you! Editor at Large 03:49, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:GTAW_welding.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

cerro de la silla picture[edit]

Hello, my name is María, and looking for a picture of "El cerro de la silla" I found yours. I think is a great picture and I want to know, if someone will like to use it as an image in a document or and AD, do they have to pay rights or something?

Maria, no, because the image is freely licensed, no payment is necessary. The author (me) must be credited, and if the image is modified, the modified image can't have a more strict copyright license than the original. Other than that, anyone is free to use it however they like. --Spangineeren ws (háblame) 17:27, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Administrative notice[edit]

Deutsch

Hi. This message is sent out to you because you are an administrator on Commons, and you made little use (or no use) of the admin tools lately: less than 5 times in the last five months.

Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a poll among users). According to that policy, admins who use their tools infrequently will be asked whether they still need their adminship, and if they do not respond or require them the removal of the tools will be requested.

If you feel you still need your admin tools, please sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days from the date this message was sent out. However, if you then don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will lose the adminship without any notice.

This is not a comment on the considerable help you have given to the project in the past but reflects the wish of the community to see active administrators and to ensure that possible security breaches are minimized.

This message is sent out by bot. If you want to give feedback on it, you can do so here — 08:50, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Dear Spangineer. I am writing to you to inform you that because of inactivity, you may lose your adminship on Commons.

Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a two-week poll on the proposed policy's talk page).

If you want to keep your adminship, you have to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days. Note that if you don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will then lose the adminship anyways.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Spangineer, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Welcome back. -- Cecil (talk) 04:26, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Spangineer!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine[edit]

Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. And since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 14:24, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Spangineer,

I'd like to standardize the categories so I did what he had asked for, but I don't see the need of it either. If we create categories perhaps Iwould create categories of all books in a same language: cat English Books, cat French Books and so on, including Djvu, Pdf, Txt, Tiff and other formats in subcategories. So please decide what to do and tell me if I undo what I have done, I will undo it. Regards, --Zyephyrus (talk) 14:06, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A script in your user namespace may stop working in February 2012[edit]

Hi Spangineer, I found the deprecated function akeytt somewhere in your user-namespace, e.g. Special:MyPage/monobook.js, . It is likely that this will cause JavaScript errors after Commons is updated to MediaWiki 1.19 in February. You can simply remove this function-call as it currently does nothing. If you have a copy of user-messages in your script, you may remove it and instead activate User Messages in your preferences. Please also note that addLink is now natively supported by mw.util.addPortletLink. Thank you. -- RE rillke questions? 10:51, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
