First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons:License questions.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. --gildemax 19:26, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Lebow.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Flickr images[edit]

When uploading images from Flickr, such as Image:Sam Roberts - Close-up.jpg, please fix the categories, as I did here. Happy uploading! --Boricuæddie 00:33, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, just put them in the necessary categories, and make them as specific as possible. For example, for an image of a rock band, do not add it to Category:Bands, but to Category:Rock bands. --Boricuæddie 00:41, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr[edit]

Hello!

Tell me, why did you mark Image:Courthouse, Pompeii.jpg as >

This image, which was originally posted to Flickr, was reviewed on 17-October-2007 by the administrator or trusted user Seidenstud, who confirmed that it was available on Flickr under the above license on that date.

Seidenstud

But images:

You mark as > User:FlickreviewR/template-layout

? I want Done for the all 4. Gridge 14:59, 18 October 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hi!
All four of these images are fine. They have all been reviewed. The reason they have different templates is the following: In the case of the courthouse photo, I reviewed it and marked it as such. However, in the case of the other three photos, when I went to review each one, I saw that there was a higher resolution version available on Flickr, so I uploaded that version to Commons over the smaller one that you uploaded. After uploading a new version, I felt that it would compromise the Flickr Review process if I then reviewed the image too. So I didn't, and left it for someone else to review. That someone else turned out to be the FlickreviewR bot. For whatever reason, the template that the bot leaves does not include the Done, but as I understand it, it is just as valid (maybe even more valid, AFAIK) than the human-reviewed template.
By the way, in order to avoid this in the future, you should consider making a point of downloading from Flickr the higherst resolution version available under the free license.
Anyway, thanks for your your excellent contributions from Flickr. If you haven't done so already, it is a good practice to thank the photographer by leaving a message in the comments section of the photo pages on Flickr. -Seidenstud 17:51, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the detailed response. Can I see an example for a "thank you message"? Gridge 18:33, 18 October 2007 (UTC).[reply]
No problem. The standard thank you message is:
Thanks for licensing this image as CC-BY-SA! Your choice of a free license has allowed us to use your image in <a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/">Wikimedia Commons</a>. The image is now used to illustrate <a href="http://tools.wikimedia.de/~daniel/WikiSense/CheckUsage.php?i=foo.jpg&w=_100000">one or more pages</a> on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/">Wikipedia</a> or other free knowledge projects.
Of course, you can change this however you want; it is from you, after all. And naturally, where it says foo.jpg, you need to change that to the file name that it goes by on Commons. And, if you are already adding the pictures to a wikipedia project, you can include a link to the page displaying the photo in question. Or, in general, for you, since you seem to be an editor on the Hebrew Wikipedia, you can put after "other free knowledge projects" the added text: "(such as <a href="http://he.wikipedia.org>the Hebrew Wikipedia</a>)" or anything you like. By the way, if you don't already have one, you need to open up a (free) Flickr account in order to post comments on that site.
I hope this helps. -Seidenstud 19:01, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely helps :) and I do own a flickr account (I think it's preferable to thank after the ratification). Thank you, Seidenstud. Gridge 21:20, 18 October 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Note[edit]

Hello, Seidenstud, and thanks for your contributions to the Wikimedia Commons! I have noticed that you're using the user trusted (or the babel alternative) template on your user page. This template is generally reserved for users that review Flickr images and are trusted users. It is easy to apply and become trusted in order to review images from Flickr, and I welcome you to do so if you are interested in helping out. Please feel free to discuss any concerns on my talk page. Cheers, --Pumpmeup

Attention: Please, refrain from reviewing images until you have been granted trusted user status! It's an easy process which only takes a few days --Pumpmeup 04:56, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
To tell you the absolute truth, I find your behavior mildly uncivil, and not assuming good faith. While the content of your message here seems friendly enough, I must point out that your message (to which I am replying) had the edit summary of "review stop!" Furthermore, your message uses the indented section/escalated language which, by wiki conventions, imply that two separate warnings were given to me, and that I must have ignored the first warning and continued to engage in improper behavior. This is not true, however, as your above pleas were in fact a single message ([1] - recall, of course edit summary).
Your less-than-good faith attitude toward this problem primarily stems from the fact that you have given me this warning despite the fact that I was approved as a trusted user on 15 October 2007 ([2]). I am not sure why my approved request was not clearly visible on the reviewers page; what I do know, however, is that the most immediate cause of its absence is that you, yourself, archived it.
I understand from looking over your RfA that it has been suggested that you interact better in the User Talk namespace. I suggest you consider beginning by issuing warnings more judiciously and with greater attention to detail.
Thanks, Seidenstud 05:26, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Whoa - didn't notice about that, sorry. Trust me - all my edits were done in good faith - no need to hammer me :-). I don't think I ever warned you - sorry if my wording was wrong. I will make sure your name is added to the list. No hard feelings? Happy editing --Pumpmeup 06:34, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Hello, Seidenstud, thank you very much for to solve this. I'm grateful for your help me. I'm sending my heartfelt greetings. --Dorieo 11:29, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My pleasure. Thanks for uploading such a nice photo! In the future, to avoid the strange tags all over the photo information, make sure the template flickrreview does not accidentally get snuck into the information when you upload it - unless you are actually uploading the photo from Flickr. -Seidenstud 14:30, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You state that the licence is questionable. However Flicker displays a "copyright" for every image. It is just to provide info about the author name: the copyright be itself, even if followed by "all rights reserved" does not mean that the image is not free for use, just that all the rights are reserved or granted by the owner indicated.

In this case, the image was published with a "Public" licence. This is clearly stated in the Flickr site. Really, look for the licence on Flickr by looking at the greeen dot below the copyright line. And re-read the Flickr usage policy.

Images published with a "public" licence are free for use; here we can consider them the same as "CC-BY" (attribution needed), without further restrictions. Verdy p 01:43, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Banksia grandis cone.jpg[edit]

I must say it is extremely annoying to have uploaded this image under a correct license, and for it to be rejected now because the Flickr license has been changed in the meantime. Considering I have been around Commons for a very long time, and demonstrably understand copyright, and demonstrably don't upload stuff under incorrect licences, is there any way that this can be validated on the grounds that "it is valid because Hesperian says it was when he uploaded it"? If I arrange to become appointed a trusted user or administrator, could we take that line of reasoning, do you think? Hesperian 11:06, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thanks for the response. Hesperian 23:26, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

your RfD[edit]

Hi Seidenstud,
why not upload the correct version of Image:Chris Calrin.JPG simply over the old one? That is easily done from the image page ifself and requires no further intervention of others. Except of course if you want the wrong version have totally removed from the files. --Túrelio (talk) 07:04, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of namespace-rename "Image" -> "File"[edit]

Dear user, the MediaWiki developers recently announced that the "Image:" namespace is going to be renamed to "File:". "Image:" will remain an alias. The canonical namespace name wgCanonicalNamespace will change from "Image" to "File".

I noticed that you use wgCanonicalNamespace in either your monobook.js page or a JavaScript file in your userspace (check this list).

Please check and replace all occurrences of

wgCanonicalNamespace == "Image"

with

wgNamespaceNumber == 6

to ensure that your scripts keep working. Thanks! --Dschwen (talk) 18:41, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Seidenstud!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
