Moi[edit]

Vastaa sitten omalle keskustelusivulleni, eli, olin kerran näkevinäni oudon tiedostomuodon jolla pystyi selaamaan skannattua kirjaa.

The en version is not GFDL-presumed, but GFDL. I fixed that in [1]. If that is the only reason this image was deleted, may be it should be restored...

BTW I fixed a small typo at en:User:Samulili. Hope you don't mind. -- Paddu 18:41, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Restored, and thanks for fixing that "bug". -Samulili 13:41, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the work is anonymous because those are photographs collected by Abel Paz from various CNT militants who donated their personal stuff to him over the years, and are currently held by the Fundación Anselmo Lorenzo in Barcelona. They were widely republished, so you can get them from almost anywhere, but the main source is him and his books, which never refer to the original photographers. Not even him knows. You can check this on Paz, A. (1976) Durruti: The People Armed. Montréal: Black Rose Books, or V/A (1996) Durruti 1896-1936. London: Active/Beastie. What other proof should I give you?

Please answer in the image's Discussion page. Best regards, Mr.Rocks 04:02, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have added this explanation on the image pages. -Samulili 09:19, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Zürich[edit]

Hey. You changed a recording of Image:De-Zürich.ogg from what seemed to be a native Swiss pronunciation to the old one I had recorded in northern-type Standard German (but not as a native speaker). Could you motivate your edit at the talk page?

Coats of Arms[edit]

Hello,

You just added a move command to User:Orgullobot/commands. “Coats of Arms” is mispelled, and the correct name for the destination category is Coats of arms to be classified. --Juiced lemon 16:02, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing. I hope that Commons will work long enough for me to fix that... Samulili 17:53, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, on User:Orgullobot/Welcome log you are listed as a helper. Orgullobot hasn't been active for a while and SieBot has taken over the welcoming a few days ago. There is fresh output again. Template:Duplicate[edit]

Hi,
Thanks for your change to the Template:Duplicate, it should make deletion comments easier without ading more work for the admins. i was just wondering if you could take a look att the change I suggested on the talk page. Cheers /Lokal_Profil 16:42, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, done. Samulili 16:55, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, however what I meant was that the [[: ]] should be displayed in the template (i.e. no wikilink in the template but a text copy of the line would give a wikilink). The way to get this is by simply putting a nowiki tag about the [[:{{{1}}}]]. Cheers /Lokal_Profil 17:59, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks /Lokal_Profil 01:37, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

lisenssistä[edit]

Hei, Minulla on ongelma. Olen kirjoittanut fi-wikiin artikkelia Sahan tasavallasta (ja siihen liittyvistä aiheista). Commonsin kuvavalikoima on kuitenkin aiheesta suppea.

Samulili 19:58, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Kiitos vastauksestasi. Täytyy nyt katsoa miten asia etenee. Saatan palata vielä asiaan jatkossa. --Kyzyl 20:18, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Karpacz Samotnia[edit]

Why the.. have you deleted the photo named 'Karpacz Samotnia.jpg' ??? http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&type=delete&page=Image:Karpacz_Samotnia.jpg

It was a great panoramic shot. I want it back. I dont care whether you have it or not. That pic was great in that article and I want it back. Or at least put it at www.imageshack.us and put the link here.Cheers.--83.12.91.242 14:09, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! The image was deleted because there was no information if the image could be used freely. For the same reason I can't upload it anywhere else because that would be a copyright violation. Samulili 16:44, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Can you at least send me that image via e-mail? batonique@o2.pl Thanks in advance. --83.12.91.242 17:44, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'd rather not, as it seems that the picture shouldn't have been uploaded here in the first place. That's why I prefer to act like it didn't exist. Samulili 21:06, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Categories naming[edit]

Hello,

I would appreciate if you discuss instead of threathening me of vandalism.

I think that there is no good reason not to name the categories with the language of the place, so please do not rename Genève as Geneva. Categories redirect works quite well. Regards, Yann 21:38, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The good reason is the rule. We have common rules, not rules custom made for every individual. 130.232.254.32 20:38, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you marked this photo as not having valid source information. Please check to see if a vandal removed it before marking images with {{Nsd}}, and please revert the vandalism. If you want to respond, please respond on my talk page on the English Wikipedia at en:User talk:Jesse Viviano. It was missing the source information because some vandal removed it. The information was restored, and the vandal has been warned. Jesse Viviano 21:57, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Armenian genocide memorial photo[edit]

Did you have any specific reason to delete this photo (its previous name was Tsitsernakaberd.jpg)? I swear I took it myself and that I uploaded it onto English Wikipedai (Commons did not exist at that time yet) about 3 years ago. Now I have reuploaded it and I hope its description ad license are OK.

BTW, this photo is requested to be deleted due to inappropriate name. --Heretiq 17:54, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Commons:Freedom of panorama: "[Armenian law] only allow this limited form of freedom of panorama: images of architectural works, photographic works, or works of fine art (which includes sculptures and statues) that are permanently located in publicly accessible places may be published only for non-commercial purposes or if the depicted copyrighted base work is not the main subject of the image." This means that there is no correct license under which it can be used in Commons. You may, however, be able to use the image in some context in some projects which allow Fair Use. Kind regards, Samulili 19:06, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I guess, the same applies for my other photos of Armenian monasteries and churches? If this is the case, give me some "transition period", please, to relocate them to Flickr or a similar site. --Heretiq 20:07, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They may be used freely if their creator has died in 1936 or earlier. That might be true for most monasteries and churches, I think. Samulili 20:16, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A question[edit]

Hello! Can the author of the photo which is uploaded to the Commons under 'Creative Commons Attribution 2.5' licence prohibit one of the sections of the Wikipedia encyclopedia (the Polish Wikipedia section) to use the author's photo to illustrate an article available there? The author wants to inform about this in the permission section of the photo summary info box. --213.199.192.60 16:57, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That kind of license is not permitted. Regardless of the license issue, you could check the Polish Copyright law and see what it has to say about the moral rights of the author. There is slim chance that the law may have something to say about your situation. Samulili 14:23, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You've have had some contact with this just above! User_talk:Herbythyme#A_request_to_the_Commons_administrator - this is not an "easy" user and has some troubles with Polish wiki and some admins. I understand his wish for privacy but altering the license (in a sense?) and I'm not sure about the idea of unblocking him even temporarily? Rather a "new" admin to deal with this - sorry and thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:36, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think you can change the attribution from real name to a pseudonym. If Riva so wishes, you can add a license like {{Copyrighted free use provided that|The Polish Wikipedia project is prohibited by the author of this photo to use this file and its derivatives}} but the CC-license must not be removed. Samulili 10:02, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - I do appreciate the help. I'm offline for 24 hours or so and will give it some thought --Herby talk thyme 11:44, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Simple photographs[edit]

Regarding that Paavo Nurmi photo: even if this is a "simple photograph" in Finland, it is a "photographic work" in countries that have a low threshold of originality (like the U.S.). And as its protection in Finland expired only in 2002, I think its copyright was also restored in the U.S. by the URAA in 1996. So we shouldn't actually host it. The image is also not useable in Germany (another low threshold country), or in Austria, or in many other countries. Lupo 09:08, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Full text of art.72 UrhG (German copyright law) - according to photos ====

UrhG § 72 Lichtbilder

Commentary: Article 72nd UrhG is "lex specialis" (strict definition according to photos) in contrary to article 64 UrhG which is "lex generalis" ( general rule of copyright apart exlusions such like art. 72 )

Art 72 UrhG in official English translation:

Section II Protection of Photographs

Article 72

(1) Photographs and products manufactured in a similar way to photographs shall be protected, mutatis mutandis, by the provisions of Part I applicable to photographic works.

(2) The right afforded by paragraph (1) shall belong to the photographer.

(3) The right afforded by paragraph (1) shall expire 50 years after publication of the photograph, or if its first permitted public communication took place earlier, after the latter, but 50 years after its manufacture where the photograph has not been published or legally communicated in public within such period. The period shall be calculated in accordance with Article 69.

Comment § 72 UrhG covers „Lichtbilder“. Nearly every photo (except: Für den einfachen Lichtbildschutz verblieben demnach (von Zufallsfotos infolge eines versehentlichen Auslösens der Kamera abgesehen) nur technische Fotos, bei denen jeder Fotograf mit denselben Fähigkeiten und Kenntnissen dasselbe Ergebnis, nämlich eine technisch einwandfreie Wiedergabe, erzielen müsse (also etwa Reproduktionen von Gemälden, Fotos von Maschinen, Fotos für die Verbrecherkartei, kartografische Luftaufnahmen und - im Regelfall - Passbilder aus Fotoautomaten).) is a „Lichtbildwerk“ (§ 64 UrhG, copyrighted for 70 years after the author’s dead). Andros is wrong („according to photos“), but he doesn’t stop promoting this false information and uses § 72 UrhG for portraits and so on. --Polarlys 15:39, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't find it distasteful, but I do find it extremely worrying that an admin is not aware of the rules of the deletion process. I don't know why this is such a sentimental issue to you that you find it necessary to drastic actions against the rules and why you find it reasonable to use words like distasteful, but I do hope that you find in your heart some room for self-reflection. Green politicians[edit]

Moi! Call to arms[edit]

Hi Samulili. I write to you and all other users listed on the Welcome log helpers list, except for EugeneZelenko this Call to arms. The reason for it is that I have seen very little activity on the project by you. Because of this we have most probably failed to check the contributions of thousands of new users and have not been able to inform them of the practices on Wikimedia Commons in a timely fashion, causing more work for us and the contributor later in the process.

I would like to urge you to make a habit of checking at least 10 or so new user's contributions from the Commons:Welcome log each day you are active here. We welcome about 200 new users with contributions each day and we currently have 19 users on the helpers list. You can find links to some helpful scripts on the welcome log page, that are likely to make your life a lot easier. If there are no users to be checked that have been welcomed today, please attend to a previous log. Thank you for your renewed attention. Cheers! Siebrand 12:20, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Last comment[edit]

Regaring Commons:Deletion requests/THEhotel, my rationale for believing that it was a helicopter shot was becuase it looked too perfect. No information on the vantage point, so I naturally assumed a helicopter. It could be a hotel room, in retrospect, but he does not specify the hotel room. But it simply has that aura of professional style, compared to his other ones. Most of his other photographs are ground-level, what I call the the "parking lot vantage point" shots (examples: w:Image:Janugget.jpg and w:Image:Lv-hilt3.jpg). The Hilton one is even tilted, amateurish, compared to the THEHotel ones. These are bizzare in that they look like perfect promo shots of the hotels. Well, those are just my suspicions, I regret that I didn't tag them with w:template:nsd when I had the chance. hbdragon88 04:04, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly, I'm sorry I didn't realize that you hoped for a reply. Regarding the photos, I understand why you were suspicious but all things considering I disagree and that in my opinion it is certainly reasonably probable that the uploader is also the photographer. Names of the regions[edit]

http://www.reg.fi/english/engindex.html

As South is more exact and determined expression of a region than Southern and as South Karelia and Southn Bothnia use South instead of Southern and as North Karelia is North Karelia, not Norhern Karelia, I would suggest that as for the regions of Finland would be used South instead of Southearn and North instead of Norhern to translate the Finnish expressions Etelä- and Pohjois-. 80.223.125.28 16:38, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is a very difficult question that I have been wondering. First problem is that these may be names that Finnish bodies have given to their regions—when we should use the names that English speaking people use. The real English names might be found in some EU documents, or maybe not. The second problem is that some of the names are given by Finnish bodies as the names of the bodies, and not as the names for the region.
I don't oppose to changing names but I would like to use other sources than the Finnish ones. If you find them, I will be glad to help in renaming the categories. Samulili 19:34, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Authorization for Image:Xanaduoutside80s.jpg[edit]

Hello, Samulili. I have some problems in understanding licences and their use. Concerning the referenced page, I think that it could be used on Wikipedia, following it source: en:Image:Xanaduoutside80s.jpg. Nevertheless, I don't know how to signal this on the image page. (Please, be kind to answer on my talk page). Sylfide 20:06, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
