First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

De-adminship warning[edit]

Dear Pymouss, I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your admin rights on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2024 before 13th March (UTC), and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months, if you fail to do so you will automatically lose your rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Thank you! -- CptViraj (talk) 20:47, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Pymouss and Royalbroil: I don't understand the logic of closing this DR as keep. Fine, the Flickr user took the photos, I'm not doubting that, but all of these photos have significant derivative work in the (the album jacket). How is that not a problem? Are we saying we know this Flickr user is so good they must have cleared the rights for the derivative work, or what? - Jmabel ! talk 04:09, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel: I thought that you were doubting the Flickr user was flickrwashing. Upon reading your comment again in this light, I didn't read your intention. The album jacket is marginal with respect to de minimus in my opinion as it is not the focus of the photograph. The cover is not very sharp (as in photographic sharpness / crispness) either. How about blurring the album covers as a compromise? Royalbroil 16:06, 17 February 2024 (UTC) p.s. Like this recent example.[reply]
@Royalbroil: File:Lauren Daigle @ The Novo 05 11 2023 (53048156413).jpg certainly calls for a blur if it is to be kept. Except for what little is covered by her hands, that's about as high-resolution as what en-wiki normally uses on a fair-use basis in a an article about an album, though slightly less well-focused. - Jmabel ! talk 18:09, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And the others look pretty close to that (look at them at full resolution, if you doubt me). - Jmabel ! talk 18:11, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: It seems like we have a compromise! Would you blur the album covers on all of the 3 images, please? Royalbroil 21:02, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. - Jmabel ! talk 22:59, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent job, thank you! Royalbroil 02:51, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's a good solution. Thank you both. Pymouss Let’s talk - 18:28, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Jmabel for your good works and also to Royalbroil and Pymouss. --Ooligan (talk) 21:51, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
