Wrong licenses[edit]

I'm relatively inexperienced on Commons, so I was wondering if there was any template I could tag images with or any discussion page I could bring them to if I suspect that they are tagged with the wrong license - for example, [[File:Joshua Cole Official Picture.jpg]] and [[File:Johnny Miller racing driver.jpg]] seem very unlikely as 4.0. Thanks as always, Willsome429 (talk) 21:09, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please undelete 1950s era U.S. advert: File:Crosley Farm-O-Road - Leaflet.jpg[edit]

I admit that I failed to add the {{PD-US-no-notice}} tag. Please undelete this uncopyrighted pre 1978 U.S. full page advertisement, conforming to Copyright rules: Advertisements.
The fact that this full page print is an advertisement, and not newspaper copy, is clearly and literally so stated on the bottom of the page in the photo.
Thanks in advance. --GeeTeeBee (talk) 14:54, 4 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Royalbroil, what are your intentions regarding the progress of the full deletion discussion of File:Crosley Farm-O-Road - Leaflet (cropped).jpg ?
Do you consider the issue so complicated, that it merits keeping it open any longer ?
@Túrelio: : do you still wish to add anything further, after your last contribution, some twelve days ago ?
--GeeTeeBee (talk) 15:12, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@GeeTeeBee: An uninvolved party, usually an administrator, decides the outcome of all deletion discussions based on the merits of arguments. All vested parties cannot close. It is one of Wikipedia's checks and balances. Royalbroil 23:50, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for your reply. What's the preferred scenario, to bring this case to an end ? Will you contact another administrator, or should I ? Or some third way ? GeeTeeBee (talk) 23:56, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The file hasn't been deleted so there's no rush, right? I've never heard of an administrator being asked to close a discussion. If an involved party asks for someone specific to close then it could be misconstrued as trying to get a certain outcome. Commons is volunteer driven so it comes down to whenever an administrator is going through and closing deletion discussions. Perhaps the first one to read it might choose to comment rather than close. I encourage you to have faith and patience in the process. I am considered an involved party. Royalbroil 00:26, 17 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No rush ? I would like for some authority to look at it, after over a week has passed, and no comments were made by any involved parties, and to either weigh in, or close this, because, frankly, I feel wrongly accused of a copyvio, and additionally wrongly accused of license laundering. Which step in "the process" can I reasonably take, to get some movement towards closure in these matters ? Asking people with the right authority level to at least look at this case does not influence the outcome. I'm certainly not even pushing toward anybody in particular to judge it —precisely because I do have faith in "the process" — as long as there is at least some semblance of it moving forward, within a reasonable time span ! -- GeeTeeBee (talk) 07:31, 17 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You are definitely NOT accused of license laundering - the person who uploaded the file on flickr claimed a license on an image that they did not take. They took a photograph of a page in a magazine. I point out not expecting quick results because I see lots of unclosed discussions from May at Commons:Deletion requests/2020/05. You have no one arguing against you so most likely a much easier case to adjudicate. I am not aware of a step in the process to move it along quicker. The absolute minimum time to discuss is 7 days per the rules at COM:DEL. That doesn't mean that you can't try to find one. I rarely have had an image nominated for deletion. One that comes to mind was when I copied an image from the English Wikipedia to Commons. It was hard to tell - might have been a photograph of a television screen so it got deleted. I just waited out the process. I have little personal experience because I have enough work with uploading images that I have taken myself. Your own image is obviously not possible in your scenario. I'm sorry that you unhappy with the time for this process. The project is done by volunteers. How many people have interest in taking many photographs but decide years later that they want to spend discretionary time as a judge? Royalbroil 13:24, 17 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Royalbroil,

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 200K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.

Please fill in this short survey, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2020.

Kind regards,
the Wiki Loves Monuments team, 08:25, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Diagrams has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons![edit]

Dear Royalbroil

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC[edit]

Hello Royalbroil,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

Hello. I noticed that you deleted an image here. However, you can see with this example or with this example that the copyright in Italy has expired for these images. Therefore a refund could be appropriate? Paul Vaurie (talk) 17:46, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Paul Vaurie: It was a new upload. The uploader claimed that they took it themself ({{Self}}) which is certainly wrong on a old sports card. They claimed license "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license" which don't make sense. You do present a case that I hadn't encountered before. How do you propose that the licensing would work if the image would be restored? This image that you mentioned has a URAA license tag that is invalid for new uploads. Royalbroil 00:43, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I'm no expert in this. All I know is that this was a panini card, it was deleted, and that it has the possibility of being in the public domain. Paul Vaurie (talk) 00:45, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps you could ask uploaders of panini cards. Paul Vaurie (talk) 00:45, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Paul Vaurie: I would be willing to restore the file for the purpose of having a full Deletion Request (it was deleted via the speedy deletion process). Then the community could decide. I would temporarily undelete the file per the spirit of the Undeletion requests process. You would need to convince the closing admin how the file meets the criteria for keeping (the default is delete per the Precautionary principle). Would you rather 1) defend the file in the full deletion process or 2) keep it deleted? Royalbroil 02:04, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Keep it deleted, not worth the hassle for something I don't know much about. Paul Vaurie (talk) 15:12, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Report[edit]

Hello, please take a look at this report: Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Files named with meaningless/disruptive names (motivated renaming was reverted without any valid reason) as these are serious everyday violations of the Commons rules and protection of meaningless names (in this case, Kalumny which translates as Columns). User Kazimier Lachnovič with filemover rights constantly performs violations of the Commons rules, creates instability issues and protects meaningless names, thus creates confusion. His Commons admin rights previously were lifted, but it is clear that it is not enough. -- Pofka (talk) 17:27, 26 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2021[edit]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Your Wausau photo used[edit]

...by WPR at [1], if you didn't notice. --Jeff the quiet (talk) 16:26, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeff the quiet: I'm excited and honored!!! I'm satisfied that I was given proper attribution. On a related topic, I had given WPT permission to used several of my photographs for one of their TV shows (Wisconsin Hometown Stories - about Oshkosh). They made up a promotional game which was distributed to Oshkosh teachers to be used by their grade school students. I asked WPT for one copy of the game which I still have. De-adminship warning (Feb 2022)[edit]

This talk page in other languages:

Dear Royalbroil. I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your admin rights and also additional permissions (bureaucrat/oversighter/checkuser/interface-admin), if any, on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2022 before 11th March, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose their rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

[edit]

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
