please place the picture(s) in a category or a gallery[edit]

To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikipedia user, link to the person's local user page.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

This file is a copyright violation because it is copyrighted and not published under a free license. This is a logo of a corporation, sports team, or other organization, and is protected by copyright and/or trademark.

Why doesn't the Commons include fair use content?
One of Wikimedia Commons founding principles was "free content only". This principle, like the NPOV policy in Wikipedia, will never change. Besides that, copyright law varies from country to country. Thus, fair use laws vary from country to country, with each country having its own interpretation and many jurisdictions having no fair use concept at all. As a result, fair use content is seldom going to be usable outside of the United States. As content in the Commons is meant to be used in any country, the Commons is also legally prohibited including fair use content.
What licenses do the files I upload have to use?
You have to make sure that anything you upload is either in the public domain or under some free license (aka copyleft) such as GNU Free Documentation License or CC-BY/BY-SA (for more see Commons:Licensing and Commons:Copyright tags). Please do not invent licenses out of thin air. Most things on the internet are copyrighted. Don't assume otherwise unless you have a good reason. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. This image on the Esperanto Wikipedia of Edmond Privat would be nice to have on the English Wikipedia article. How can I get it there? How would I license it? None of the pull down menu selections apply. It appears to be in the public domain.Mikereichold 21:42, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
