First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Image:Fletchers Canal near Clifton Aqueduct.jpg[edit]

How did this pic come to be under a CC licsense?Geni 09:25, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Permission granted by author, but 'permissions' email admins have objected since the author stated he didn't want people to use the images on his website for profit, so I've emailed the person who gave me permission to use the image to change his wording to get it ok'd. Should be sorted this week. I don't think the author meant to include that image since its a very old one. I'm wondering if the original copyright has expired - I think the original photographer might be extremely difficult to find any info on. Possibly a local newspaper, I'll check that out one day. Panama Canal diagram alone[edit]

28-Oct-2007: That JPEG diagram of the Panama Canal zone was reformatted from a PNG file also on Commons: Image:Panama Canal Rough Diagram.png, uploaded by another user. I have no other source data. Sorry. -Wikid77 09:23, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok thanks for getting back to me Parrot of Doom 23:13, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Self-made[edit]

An image is not self-made if you took a photograph of a photograph. Either that, or you are improperly marking your images (e.g., Image:Scene from junction of flixton road and brook road flixton manchester.jpg). Please remedy this by providing more information about the sourcing and fixing the license tag. Patstuart 18:09, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The image is a photograph that personally belongs to me. It is not a postcard image that I have ever come across anywhere else, indeed the back side is blank. It was given to me many years ago by the family of the man who lived in my house more than 50 years ago. Parrot of Doom 20:27, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pending permission for image(s)[edit]

Hello. On following images, you have added the Otrs pending template:

Unfortunately, after conducting a search, I could not locate the ticket containing the permission to use the image. Please respond on my talk page if you have the ticket number, or if you would like to send me the permission. Please note that if you do not respond, the image may be deleted. Thanks! Hello, Parrot of Doom!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Welford Road and Tigers[edit]

Hi Parrot, I noticed you updated the picture at Welford Road Stadium with a picture of the new stand, thanks for that. I did wonder if you have any pictures of the players that you would upload as we appear to be short of pictures to illustrate the players. Noq (talk) 23:20, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately not - I was there working for Sky and could only take a few snaps well before the match. Thanks for the mention though, and by the way its a nice ground. Parrot of Doom (talk) 19:52, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.
Thanks for uploading Image:Itv gunpowder plot mike slee.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Files you uploaded may be deleted[edit]

The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have already sent the permission, please re-send it to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. At the same time, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Please note that this message is being left by an automated bot, whose operator is not an OTRS volunteer, therefore please do not send this information to me, as it will not save your images from deletion. Thanks for your time! Please help translate this message! HersfoldOTRSBot(talk/opt out) 01:58, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Arrrr, me matey![edit]

This File:Blackbeard.gif seems not from the book, where might ye be finding it then? Anyways, ah've been fixin sum of Blackbeard's mugs and we best be leavin File:Bbeard Sword.jpg with Beej71's work (his is big and clear of most by far!). If ye want a page view, ah loaded one up at File:Blackbeard the Pirate.jpg. I upped loads of Blackie and friends' pictures (Category:Blackbeard, Buccaneer, Category:Stede Bonnet, Category:Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates, Category:Blackbeard), so feel free to plunder them for ye use. Arrr! Jappalang (talk) 04:15, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Blackbeard.gif is on page vi of the edition I have of Konstam's work. The problem with Beej71's version of BbeardSword.jpg is that its been messed around with - cropped, and elements of the background removed. The version I added is a direct scan of the second edition of Johnson, which I believe is the most appropriate thing to do. Parrot of Doom (talk) 08:40, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Right from the original
Back to regular speak. It would help to fill in the version of Konstam (title/year) you have for File:Blackbeard.gif since the version of Konstam I consulted, Blackbeard: America's Most Notorious Pirate (2007), has only a portion of the GIF, not the whole frame. Right now, the GIF has no source listed (although we know it is definitely PD from all the other copies we have here).
As for File:Bbeard Sword.jpg, I would prefer Beej71's version (and variants) to be there since:
 1. we need to keep record of uploads and Beej71's version (scanned from Konstam) is larger and cleaner, thus being of much more value to future possible publishers of Blackbeard or pirate materials, and
 2. as pointed out earlier, a "non-photoshopped, full-page" image of what you wanted (with full page number even) exists at File:Blackbeard the Pirate.jpg (see right).
Would you revert File:Bbeard Sword.jpg and use File:Bbeard Sword.jpg instead? Jappalang (talk) 11:18, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Its all pretty confusing. I think what I'd rather do is create a new upload, and plonk the images I've sourced there instead. There are so many variants its hard to keep track of things. I'll do that later today. Parrot of Doom (talk) 12:03, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hi Parrot. Generally, when there are significant differences in colouring (or perspectives), one would upload the different versions separately. I reverted this image back to its original and uploaded the London Lives version as File:Workroom at St James Workhouse.jpg. I also took the liberty to change the file pointer at w:Workhouse to the London Lives version (although I expect that is what you would want in any case). Hi PoD. These banners looked out of place on my user talk page because I didn't take the photos. The four images above went through the Valued Image process which I guess is a bit like being a Good Article. I don't have an eye for the finer points of photography so would be hopelessly out of my depth with nominating Featured Pictures, and the same seems to go for Quality Images, which seems a bit of a quirky process to me. But Valued Images make sense to me, so I nominated a handful of your uploads so that they (and Greater Manchester) get a bit of recognition. Nev1 (talk) 20:06, 15 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That's very kind of you, thanks. I bought a new phone recently, an Xperia Z2, with a very, very good camera. So I can use it to take some pretty good pictures while I'm out cycling. If there's anything around the East Cheshire area you want a picture of, drop me a line. They won't be DSLR quality but they'll be good enough to pass.
