;) Papatt (talk) 09:49, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your removal or rename templates[edit]

In particular File:To many sleepless nights.jpg‎ should be renamed, but I do not know the scientific name. You quote a policy that doesn't prohibit me from filing non-final rename requests, and this one in particular goes under "change meaningless bio-names into binomial scientific names". The template {{Rename}} gives an usable notice to help with defining a good rename for uncertain request, it's clearly not an "invalid request" AzaToth 11:44, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AzaToth !
I agree that this file's name should be improved but please understand that we, filemovers, have to follow the guidelines.
First of all, you didn't mention a legitimate reason to rename this file as required by the guidelines. Since you weren't the original uploader, I tried to find for you a suitable reason according to our criteria but I failed, sorry.
Please feel free to try again, this time with an expressed acceptable reason and if possible with a more relevant name. I'm not the only one who processes these requests.
Best, Papatt (talk) 12:16, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I was using the rename feature of the Gadget, and it doesn't allow you to add an reason. :( AzaToth 12:31, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The best then is to edit your request(s) by adding the specified reason according to the template's syntax and criteria (few matching words may be enough).
I didn't find the link to your Gadget but be sure a report of this lack will be appreciated by both renaming requesters-to-be and filemovers if dealt with.

Avis[edit]

Hello,

Cordialement, quand même, --Claude Truong-Ngoc (talk) 16:12, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming of Files[edit]

Thank you Papatt for renaming some of my uploads. As regards to the two files you mentioned on my talkpage, renaming has already been done by User:Sreejithk2000. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 07:26, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Elfriede_Jelinek_Autograph.jpg[edit]

Bonjour Papatt. Qu'est que vous fait?

I see some strange categories marked for my upload cited above. Normally, for all the hundreds of autographs which I've uploaded I placed under the "Autographs" category. Other Commons users have categorised further, in some cases. The strange categories marked are: "Media needing category review in use at en.wikipedia", "Media needing category review as of 5 August 2011", "Media needing category review with 2 suggested categories". Can you please help me in overcoming these special remarks. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 08:52, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hindustanilanguage !
I first noticed that bots (non-human processes) tagged this file. The first time it was because you misspelled the category, you corrected it. The second time it added the category:Elfriede Jelinek and asked to check if it was relevant. That's the purpose of its tag, I'd say you may delete it now.
However, the category:Autographs contains now 400 files and should be more sub-categorized than it is now (maybe by the initial of the person's sirname or more relevant).
Best, Papatt (talk) 15:23, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As you'd say that I may delete it now, I deleted it. Thank you for the advice. Au revoir. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 10:05, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Obvious error[edit]

Hello!

You have made a typical mistake with moving files. You should really be more careful. The effects of such errors can be huge. You have moved this file: File:M88A1 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.jpg but you did not replaced the use on Wikipedia projects (http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:GlobalUsage&target=M88A2_HERCULES_during_Operation_Iraqi_Freedom.JPEG). Please fix it. --High Contrast (talk) 12:42, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi High Contrast !
Your typical mistake is to ignore what means "assume good faith". Where did you see that I made a mistake ? On this page maybe ? I don't, sorry : the only related thing I can read is "There are no pages that link to this file." All right ?
Please be more careful next time since effects of such errors can be huge.
Best, Papatt (talk) 22:19, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Unless you're very sure the image isn't in use, you really should list all the renames you do on User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands so they're fed to the bot for processing. Courcelles (talk) 22:54, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK But :
  1. how can I be more sure if I read "There are no pages that link to this file" ?
  2. do you really think I prevented Ajax to finish its process on purpose ?
If you wish more explanations, I'm ready to give them but certainly not with such a message (I mean the first one). Idem for other requests. Papatt (talk) 23:12, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe you should deliberate about whether you should really move files in future. Always remember: YOU as the filemover have to be 100% sure that all uses in all Wikimedia projects are checked by YOU. This is your task if you are willing to handle with files. No good faith here; just good work counts here. Regards, High Contrast (talk) 15:37, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No comment. Papatt (talk) 18:21, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reilly's maps[edit]

Why have you renamed so much maps of Reilly's Schauplatz der fünf Theile der Welt without any discussion?

First of all, the names are not important for anything, since when you are using files in a Wikipedia article no one will see the file name. Secondly, the original naming scheme follows strictly Reilly's numbering. So that the Category:Schauplatz der fünf Theile der Welt gave a good overview of what maps are already there and what maps are still missing. Now it is not possible anymore. Thirdly, the new names are not meaningful, like File:Map of Austria in 1791-1792 by Reilly 121.jpg. This is not a map of Austria, but only of a very small part of Austria. Even if you think names like "Reilly 121.jpg" are too short, you should have used the original map description like "Des Landes unter der Enns Viertel ob dem Manhartsberg. Nro. 121" or an English translation of that, not some arbitrary stuff. Fourthly, even without long file names the maps were findable since they all have a description and a proper categorization. --Ephraim33 (talk) 18:58, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. File:Map of Austria in 1791-1792 by Reilly 121.jpg is not a good file name at all. At least the "Reilly 121" should be at the beginning of a new file name, and not at the end. Then a the Category:Schauplatz der fünf Theile der Welt would again give a good overview what maps are still missing. --Ephraim33 (talk) 19:08, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ephraim33 !
I renamed these files according to the renaming guidelines, which express that a "change from completely meaningless names into suitable names, according to what the image displays" should be made (# 2).
If you don't agree with the way I renamed these files, please request new names and do so til the bottom of the category.
Best, Papatt (talk) 22:39, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, the file names were not "completely meaningless" like File:DSC_1342.jpg in the example of the renaming guidelines. So there was no need to rename these files in the first place. "Reilly 121.jpg" is simple the map number 121 of Reilly. Since the maps of Schauplatz der fünf Theile der Welt are the only Reilly maps with numbers, these names are clear, non-ambiguous and easy to use (Including the old titles in the file names would not be a good idea since Reilly used an old spelling and a strange capitalization, which would inevitable lead to mistakes. Since it is a lot easier to change the file descriptions than the file names, it's better to omit Reilly's titles in file names.). The files of the Category:Schauplatz der fünf Theile der Welt are sorted like the maps in Reilly's atlas and it is easy to see what files are already there and what maps are still missing. This is, in my opinion, very very important if you want to search for the missing maps and upload them. This I have done in the past, but this I cannot do in the future if the names are messed up.
You said you "read the Renaming guideline, agree with them and shall apply them in my work-to-be". So you are familiar with this rule: "In general, Commons aims to provide stable file names as there might be external file clients and file moving involves significant human and computing resources. Thus renaming should be used with caution." I don't think starting to rename some 500 files without urgent need can be called "used with caution".
So I think it would be best and least labour intensive, if you simply move the files back to their original names (better move 150 files back, than move 500 to new names). And I kindly ask you for that: Please rename these files to the original names. --Ephraim33 (talk) 08:52, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. If you want to rename files: There are a lot file names like File:BILD<number>.jpg or File:CIMG<number>.jpg or File:DCP<number>.jpg or File:DSC<number>.jpg or File:DSCF<number>.jpg or File:DSCN<number>.jpg or File:IMG<number>.jpg or File:IMO<number>.jpg or File:MVC-<number>.jpg or File:PA<number>.jpg or File:PB<number>.jpg or File:PC<number>.jpg or File:PICT<number>.jpg that are waiting for you. --Ephraim33 (talk) 08:52, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that you consider only your point of view. OK, you know that Reilly was a cartographer who made a lot of maps but what about others ?
Maybe you didn't notice that Reilly is the name of many people and some places too. So if these names weren't "completely meaningless" in your mind, they were at least misleading, another undisputed reason to rename a file (i. e. # 3). Of course this still applies to the not yet renamed Reilly files.
However, I'll let you some time to find someone relevant to approve your point of view and deny mine before going on what I began.
Please also notice that renaming back isn't this easy. The redirection has to be deleted before a renaming can be done, that means three operations and at least two persons are needed to proceed (1 : ask for deletion - 2 : deletion - 3 : renaming).
With this in mind, you'll understand that the shortest way to an homogenous status isn't the way back.
Best, Papatt (talk) 10:07, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What do you think about "File:Reilly map <number>.jpg"? Then you have the word map in the file name and don't have to move them back. Then it is clear that a map can be seen on this image. But there is no arbitrariness in the names (like Holy Roman Empire vs. Germany even though the very same area is depicted (with and without Switzerland). Or London-England vs. Vienna-Austria. Or dates like "ca 1805" which you translated into "in 1805", what is not the same. Maybe future investigations will find the correct year. For that reason, years in the file names are not a wise decision.). And the most important point: The file names are still short enough, so that the number is visible in the Category:Schauplatz der fünf Theile der Welt. One can see what files are missing and work to fill the gaps. And this is analogous to the renaming guideline no. "6. harmonize file names of a set of images (so that only one part of all names differs) to ease their usage in templates (e.g. diagram symbols, scans of pages of a book, maps)", yes maps.
You said "renaming back isn't this easy". Yes, I agree. And this is one thing more you should have in mind before you start renaming hundreds of files. --Ephraim33 (talk) 13:46, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Files names don't have to tell everything. There is plenty of room in the file description ;-) --Ephraim33 (talk) 13:46, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please agree that I couldn't assume my renamings would be disputed since I had at least one undisputed reason (according to the renaming guidelines) to do so. My choices can be disputed, I can agree too.
OK, I can agree with your choice, but I'd like to suggest "File:Reilly's map Nr <number>.jpg" and, for the "<number>X" maps, something more meaningful like "File:Reilly's map Nr <number> coloured.jpg" (to be checked since I noticed some differences).
I'd be glad you ask for some more help by formally requesting renaming by means of the template {{rename|Reilly's map Nr <number>.jpg|Uploader requested}} (where <number> will be explicited), especially for the "<number>X" files and relatives.
According to that, I'll follow your guideline (with the "harmonize" reason) while other filemovers will deal with your formal requests. Please let me know if (and how) you agree by pointing to your first requests.
Best, Papatt (talk) 08:03, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I always assume good faith. So I'm sure you have done this to improve Wikipedia. Your suggestion "File:Reilly's map Nr <number>.jpg" is almost ok for me, but I would like to change it to "File:Reilly's map no. <number>.jpg". I will wait a few days to see if anyone has anything against this suggestion. --Ephraim33 (talk) 20:17, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind, it's up to you. Papatt (talk) 21:21, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction of two new categories on Commons[edit]

Comment allez vous?

Based on your input, I created two new categories : Category:Shaz_Tamkanat and Category:Khushwant_Singh. While the former is purely based on my uploads, the latter also includes the uploads by Ahsanbutt in addition to my uploads. Since the Category 2 uploads by Ahsanbutt are also a category in themselves, I let the existing category be in its place - merely added the uploads to one more Category:Khushwant_Singh. Please revert back your observations on this and suggestions for future categorization. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 09:07, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Papatt, I fully agree with your first suggestion - renaming Category:Shaz Tamkanat to be Category:Autographs of Shaz Tamkanat. In this connection, as admin, you will have to first rename the main file, and subsequently, either me or you will have to change the category tag in each of the three files.
Regarding Category:Khushwant Singh, we need to think for a while. Especially, your suggestion Category:Works of Khushwant Singh should actually be Category: Translated Works of Khushwant Singh in Urdu. The other category you suggested, Category:Autographs of Khushwant Singh, is perfectly fine and we need to rework on it similar to Category:Shaz Tamkanat discussed above. Regards, Hindustanilanguage (talk) 06:42, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the insightful and thoughtful input. I will act accordingly. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 10:18, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I failed to comprehend your last message. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 08:48, 25 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Maps of France[edit]

Hi.

By removing the category Category:Maps of France of the image File:Température mer janvier 2009 .png, you remove it from the category "Maps". This image is a map and should be tagged as such. Maybe we need a better map category, but for now, Category:Maps of France should be sufficiently good. Cheers. Badzil (talk) 14:18, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bin en fait, je pense qu'il manque plutôt une Category:Maps of Gulf of Biscay, ptèt à rajouter à la Category:Maps of regions of France ou plus pertinent si tu vois mieux.

File:Autograph_of_Maulana_Abul_Kalam_Azad.jpg[edit]

Hi, this file was used in Urdu and Farsi (Persian) versions of Wikipedia. Now it is not used in any Wiki Project. How can I know the project pages and reuse or ask an editor to do the same after renaming? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 07:56, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hindustanilanguage !
I first checked if your file has been normally renamed : yes it has.
That means that all usages of the previous name will be replaced across all Wikimedia projects ; you can find this in the relevant page (a search for "Maulanaazad" in it is helpful). However I don't know when it will be done.
If you don't want to wait for it, the shortest way would be to edit the pages where you know you saw your file.
Best, Papatt (talk) 10:09, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Papatt. I think I'll have to wait because I don't know the pages on which this file was referred to. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 09:20, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Bonjour monsieur, can you help me in knowing when all usages of the previous file name will be replaced across all Wikimedia projects, merci beaucoup.Hindustanilanguage (talk) 06:30, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think it will be done when the relative line in the relevant page will disapear. The easiest way could be to check if your file is still linked to this page. HTH, Papatt (talk) 12:41, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MFG, Papatt (talk) 18:54, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Two wrongs don't make a right.
Aber bitte probier noch mal. Papatt (talk) 19:08, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rename of file "File:Greater Coat of Arms of the Russian Empire 1700x1767 pix Igor Barbe 2006.jpg"[edit]

No valid reason for rename? WHY NOT ?? the actual name is not suitable and personalistic. Shadowxfox 18:58, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Because the uploader - presumed to be the copyright owner of the picture - has the right to specify - according to CC-BY-SA - how his picture has to be attributed to him.
Furthermore, the reason you invoque doesn't match any of the undisputed ones stated in the renaming guidelines.
Did you notice ? The first of them expresses "Uploader requested". Sure no one would come into a renaming war, don't you believe ?

Mechanism for dealing with abusive admins[edit]

Dear Papatt,
Can you please tell me about any noticeboard or discussion board on Commons from where an ordinary contributor can seek relief from an impolite, abusing and falsely accusing admin who acts in a highly egoistic and unbecoming manner. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 09:35, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hindustanilanguage !
I'm afraid I can't help you this time since I didn't find a page like "Requests to admins" but I'm quite sure such a page exists.
I hope you'll find elsewhere the help you need. Best, Papatt (talk) 19:41, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year[edit]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
