First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Sirius_070614-N-5067K-069.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. --Siebrand 10:01, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for providing images to the Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikipedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best use CommonsHelper
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

File:Australian soldier Borneo.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

The flickr contributor's ability to use this license looks suspect. --Royalbroil 03:25, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Yamato model AA guns.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Yamato model[edit]

Dwy has pointed out evidence in Commons:Deletion requests/File:YAMATO Moder.JPG that the model is a faithful recreation of the old ship, hence retaining no originality on the part of the modelers. I apologise for nominating the deletion of your photos, and if the closing admin of the deletion request cannot undelete your photos, I humbly ask you to upload them again for the world to enjoy your photos. Better source request for Image:RAAF C-130J Hercules in the Middle East 2009.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:RAAF C-130J Hercules in the Middle East 2009.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the help desk or me at my talkpage. Thank you. High Contrast (talk) 23:52, 25 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

HMS Asute[edit]

Nick. Thanks for this (permission seems to have been given - it is stated that this was the uploaders own work, and there appears to be no reason to dispute this). I process and upload all Brian Burnell's photos on request because he does not have a Commons account, or show any willingness to open one. Never had this problem before with all the images I've uploaded for him. However, to cover all the bases, he supplied specific permission by email today and I've forwarded it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. I've removed the image tag and added a note referring to the forwarded email. Not certain if I've done it correctly though. Would appreciate if you would check it out for me. Hello, Nick-D!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Bidgee (talk) 06:55, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

a request[edit]

Today I came across some interesting flickr images of Darwin Harbour. I went to all the work of downloading them, through flinfo, and preparing the template, only to find, when I clicked "upload", that they had already been uploaded.

In November 2009 I started leaving a brief thank you on the page for each flickr image I upload. While the flickr contributors like being acknowledged, the main reason I do this is to help prevent commons people wasting their time as I did today.

One of those images was File:ACV40 Hervey Bay Departing Stokes Hill Wharf January 2012.jpg. If you go to its original flickr page you can see the acknowledgemnet I left.

Would you please consider spending an extra 20 seconds leaving a similar acknowledgment when you upload images from flickr to the commons?

Thanks! Geo Swan (talk) 18:10, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's a very good idea - I'll do that in the future. Regards, Nick-D (talk) 23:27, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hawker Hurricane in Australian service[edit]

Hi there, I indeed blundered in removing the Category:Aircraft of the Royal Australian Air Force. I think what I was attempting to do was move the photo to Category:Hawker Hurricane in Australian service but seem to have got distracted. Do you think this is a good idea - having separate categories for aircraft in service with specific air forces ? Rod. Rcbutcher (talk) 00:27, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's a good idea. From time to time I've been creating sub-categories for individual types of aircraft in RAAF service, with the long term goal of having them all categorised in this way. Regards, Nick-D (talk) 08:07, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, will do. Rod. Rcbutcher (talk) 11:13, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

IWM moves[edit]

Hi, thanks for adding more meaningful filenames to parts of this collection. It would be good if you could keep the Imperial War Museum Catalogue number at the end of the filename. This ensures all filenames are easily kept unique, even with multiple photographs in a sequence or of the same event, and helps reduce processing and complexity when checking for non-identical duplicates, as any automation or report can first query the title as a preliminary check before looking at the image page text or the image itself. Thanks -- (talk) 08:26, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please go ahead and move them again yourself. I'm needing to move these names to useful names because you uploaded them under generic names which are of virtually no assistance to article editors and have never tidied this up, and I don't see the point of maintaining the IWM's catalogue number given that Commons' software automatically identifies duplicates and there's no way of navigating images within sequences. Nick-D (talk) 10:27, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am not going to indulge in move-warring. You are renaming files without consultation and you are responsible for impact this may have, and putting it right where needed. By removing the unique identity from these files, you are breaking harmony with over 50,000 Imperial War Museum uploads, all of which use the official catalogue number in the file name. If you continue to do this, I will seek further advice on your use of the rename rights on a suitable noticeboard.
By the way, the Commons software only identifies digitally identical duplicates, there are many IWM files which are non-identical duplicates, such as different sizes, crops, contrast changes by the IWM (which appears to have occurred late in 2013) and metadata changes in the EXIF part of the files. -- (talk) 10:36, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Who do I need to consult with to move files with names such as "File:The Royal Navy during the Second World War A25419.jpg" to something which actually explains what it depicts? Is there a coordinated project for this effort whose consensus I'm violating? - if so, can you please direct me to it? With all respect (and I am grateful for these images being available on Commons), I'd suggest that you also had a responsibility to upload these files under names which identify their topic and encourage their use: I've been trying to use IWM images to illustrate Wikipedia articles, and the generic names you used have meant that I've had to work through potentially relevant images one by one rather than being able to narrow my potential choices at a glance (eg, a the deck of an aircraft carrier operating in the Mediterranean in 1942 looks a lot like that of a carrier off Norway in 1944, so a descriptive name really helps). You really can move the images to names which include the catalogue numbers though if you find these helpful: I don't see how this could possibly be move warring given that I'm encouraging you to do it, unless you propose to go back to the generic name (which isn't my reading of your first post). Also, please don't threaten me again. Nick-D (talk) 10:49, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have made no threat of any kind here, seeking advice on your apparent use of the rename right against guidelines is a reasonable next step if discussion with you, here, reaches no resolution that restores harmonization of file names.
The guideline Commons:File renaming makes a specific point of harmonization. 50,000 uploads from the same batch uploader, from the same source, using the same customized templates over a period of 18 months, is de-facto a project; however this has been discussed as a project on the Village Pump, Copyright noticeboard, WikiProject MILHIST and has a background of published correspondence. -- (talk) 11:02, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so you're threatening to seek to have the rename right taken off me because I have a different view on appropriate naming here than you do? (you appear to uploaded all these images yourself, and I note that you haven't identified a point where it was agreed to use your preferred naming convention). That seems a rather extreme overreaction to be honest, and I'd hope that Commons' processes aren't such that such a request would be supported by an uninvolved admin, especially given that I'm also not a Commons newbie. Getting back on track, can you please explain how people can use the catalogue numbers to check these images within and across categories? I really don't see how they could be used in the way you describe, but I'm not familiar with the various Commons plug ins or behind the scenes categorisations. I note that searching for the IWM catalogue number still returns the corresponding image given that this forms part of the file description fields in the admirably detailed template you used. Regards, Nick-D (talk) 11:11, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If someone is using a tool to check for duplicates, such as the API (as I use in Pywikipediabot queries), then an initial match on title avoids using the full metadata for Commons. The on-wiki search engine can be used both "live" and through the API, however returns are not always reliable and results may include partial matches from irrelevant files. This is particularly true with IWM numbers as the catalogue number can be extremely short, thereby not unique across Commons, so the search engine is not a good tool for eliminating or detecting duplicates through text matches.
I can create a batch project page which simply explains the same norm for file-naming that you can find across the majority of projects at COM:BATCH, but that only seems worth it when planning a significant re-run or refresher upload.
As you are determined to read my comments as a threat, I'm going to put a halt here as this is an indicator that discussion has been exhausted and I have made a good faith attempt to explain why your actions are a problem and it is self-evident that keeping the official catalogue numbers in the filename is both good practice and no additional work for you. -- (talk) 11:29, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Why would the discussion here have been exhausted? I've just asked you for an explanation of how what you're requesting would actually pay off as it's not evident to me (and I disagree that keeping the catalogue numbers in the file name is necessarily good practice: if these don't serve a clear purpose, they add confusion to users for no gain). Am I right in reading your response as keeping the catalogue number in the title alone is sufficient to spot duplicates in that tool? Nick-D (talk) 11:38, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File:VH-VUV 'Ruby Blue' Boeing 737-8FE Virgin Blue (Virgin Australia) (6214072328).jpg[edit]

2013 at Canberra International Airport is proper category because it is better to be as specific as possible, this means including airport year as part of categorization as opposed to month/year. This photo was missing the aviation year but had month/year, so I replaced month/year with the aviation year at airport. More information for aviation file rules:https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Aviation_files_%28check_needed%29

Yes, sorry about that. I was annoyed because you accidently removed the month in Canberra category, but I didn't need to be a total jerk about it. Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
