Could you help me??

Hi Mike, sorry, I'm brandnew to uploading pics in wiki. I tried to understand what I have to do but it doesn't work (or I'm to stupid...) I took this picture of a world war II item myself. Is this sufficient info for you to give me proper guidance on what I have to do? - Gracias! Susanne Zweimann 00:23, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

OK, so since you own the copyright, you just have to decide how you want to license the image, and add the corresponding template to the image page. Commons:Licensing provides further information and Commons:Copyright tags lists the copyright templates you can use. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:06, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Plantilla

Sorry, I don't read Spanish. From a machine translation, I'm very confused, so I'm going to try to grab someone to translate this for me. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 19:01, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
"Hi! i don't know if you understand Spanish, but as i don't know English either and you wrote me in English... Your change in my template has set all my images without license so all of them are going to be deleted. I don't know why you had to touch anything." Greetings --Platonides 21:45, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I've never edited your talk page. I assume you're talking about this, which didn't change the licensing status - all your images are still categorized in Category:User-created GFDL images. Since that's the case, I can't see why any of the images would be in danger of deletion.

Mike.lifeguard, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references....

Welcome to the boat! I am sure you will be a valuable asset as an admin - congratulations for a unanimous approval at your RfA! Thank you for helping out on this great project :) Patrícia msg 19:59, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

And if you'd be so kind to fill in yourself in Commons:List of administrators by adminship status in other Wikimedia projects... that's a very useful list. Cheers, Patrícia msg 20:07, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Could you please add justification for your decision (with regard to Commons:Freedom of panorama - Ukraine section)? Thank you. --EugeneZelenko 14:58, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Yup, that's a mistake. I'm very much used to simply enacting consensus on deletions, but Commons is different in yet another aspect, it seems. Re-closed as deleted with a rationale. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:19, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey! How about restoring Image:Gov-Palin-2006.jpg?

Permission was granted by the state of Alaska to use this image. A license was included for this image in Wiki Commons. I am not logged in, but this is jas_public.

Please forward permission emails to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. There is a best-practises guide at OTRS; please be sure to get explicit permission. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 13:43, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Duplicate

Hello, your bot removed a picture, but the wrong one is removed. It's also said in the discussionpage. Commons:Image:Mezquita_Cordoba_minbar.jpg needs to be replaced by Commons:Image:Cordoba_mihrab.jpg. I don't know how to change this name. LooiNL 15:46, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

OK, when CommonsDelinker is done replacing, the other one will be deleted. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:56, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey, Mike. You added "Talk page of deleted image" to the list of reasons, but I always used "Orphaned talk page" when deleting those pages. These kinda seem redundant to me.. or am I missing something? Rocket000 04:32, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Well it's not necessarily orphaned. It might be, it might not be, but it'd always be a "talk page of [a] deleted image" – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 14:46, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, yeah, I guess if you go with the definition "a talk page with no links to it", but that's not a reason to delete, so I don't think that's what "orphaned" means in this sense. Anyway, why just talk pages of images? What about talk pages of deleted templates or categories? Why not any talk page without a corresponding page? Rocket000 15:51, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
BTW, here's a nice tool for finding those: http://tools.wikimedia.de/~daniel/WikiSense/OrphanTalk.php Rocket000 15:54, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Fancy! I didn't know that existed. Thanks, – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:54, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Not sure why image was deleted Image:Logo_erl.png

Hi Mike,

I thought I had followed the rules for posting this corporate logo. This logo was developed by me and I have permission of the company to post the image. I've made a note to this effect on the images content page.

I've also included the same copyright tags that other companies have (e.g. Google), so I'm not sure why this image was targeted.

Finally, I received the notice too late. By the time I had the chance to respond, the image was already deleted. Is there a way to give authors a chance to respond before the image is removed?

Thanks, Paul

Please send an email giving specific permission to freely license the logo. The image has been restored with {{OTRS pending}} until then. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 19:40, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Copvios?

I - am- the creator of the images I have uploaded.

They came from http://www.severustenenbaum.com/ - seems like a copyright violation to me. Furthermore, you seem to be singlehandedly pushing Severus Tenenbaum on enwiki, and now here. Unless you are Severus Tenenbaum, then I don't see how you'd hold the copyrights to those images. Please do explain though; I may be missing something. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 23:52, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Question

I see you deleted . But I was wondering: If I had permission from the author to use the image (which I did), then doesn't the licensing not matter? Noble Story 06:15, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

That image is licensed as cc-by-nc-sa at flickr, which is unacceptable. If the copyright holder wants to release it under a free license, you'll need them to email permission to OTRS. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 14:49, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Antonio_Enrique.jpg

Dear Mike.lifeguard. I just saw that you deleted the archive Antonio_Enrique.jpg. This picture is product of my own work and I will upload it again but I would appreciate to have clear instructions on how to state that his is my image and that it can be used openly on wikicommons. Thank you in advance for your help! --Arcillaroja 12:32, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

As long as appropriate source, license and permission information is given, there's no problem. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 14:50, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Mammootty

Why did you delete my pdself mammootty.jpg image? What was the copy-vio in this case? --Malluguy2008 08:41, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

It was marked as a fair use image at en.wikipedia, which is unacceptable here at Commons; see Commons:Licensing. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 14:29, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
It was the image I had photographed (my own work), tell me in which contest it is unacceptable? How come a pdself image uploaded by the author (me) is against commons policy, please elaborate your reply? I am going to take it to ANI & undeletion request page? --Malluguy2008 06:30, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
I have dealt with this user in the past, and he has engaged in flickr washing with these images (I can't find the user). As asked before several times, Mallu - please sent permission to the office; we often have people falsely claim to be a photo author (especially with celebrities) when they're not. However, if you are the author, and you can email permissions, we will be thrilled to host the file. Patstuart (talk) 06:46, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
A permission e-mail has been sent to OTRS, please check & restore the image. --Malluguy2008 05:23, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
They will take care of it, or whoever deals with the ticket may ask me to restore it. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 16:17, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

OTRS permission

Bonjour Mike, I just saw the OTRS pending banner on Image:Everest - A Climb for Peace.jpg... can you tell me more? I foward the email from the author to OTRS. Thanks to let me know what'S going on. Benoit Rochon 02:11, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Please see OTRS. You'll need to verify permission by email. Please forward the email you received from the author to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 02:13, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Copyright protected media contents with permission incl. "Promo" media ??

[12 April 2008, above mentionned, copy from 'my' common-page, with some additions]

Hi Mike,

Thank you very much for your information, i approciate it. Please allow some questions regarding this matter:

I would like to contact Mrs. McClure (and some other artists, i wrote some wikis before) or her management, for another (personal) Photo.

Please tell me, "how" to upload (wikilink or so, plsplspls ;-)) ... in case i would get the permission by this artist/management ?

I found some (other) media, called "Promo" or "for promotion use", that's why I'm asking this:

Are these media "Copyright-protected" ?
Are commons-uploads of such Promo-medias allowed ?
If yes, which license do i have to use ?

I searched for before, but didn't find, as i'm not a regular uploader of "Copyright protected" contents - usually "own work" if necessary to illustrate 'own' swissgerman wikis, as selfmade photos, or "historical issues" (older than 70 years) ... Thank you very much for some helpfull tipps/informations, if possible, of course, or wiki-links :-))

Best regards, Roland zh 18:41, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

No, we don't accept "promo" images unless they're freely licensed. If the copyright holder wants to do so, please add {{OTRS pending}} to the image page, and have them send specific permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:52, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Falla Nou Campanar 2008.jpg

Hi, can you explain me why did you remove fotos like that? For derivate work? Derivate work of what? Actually I want to know what is the reason, because it's an original work, was exposed on the street, and it has no copyright author because it's not a representation of any character with copyright or alike . Furthermore, I think you should leave a message on the user_talk page before you delete any image at least. I hope you don´t remove the image this time. (Sorry if my English is rough, but i'm not a native speaker) Lobo (howl?) 15:58, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I don't know what image you're talking about. The one you've linked has never been deleted. I'll be happy to explain in full, but I need to know which one :) – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:23, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I'm talking for example about Image:Falla_Nou_Campanar_2008_1.jpg or Image:Falla_de_Nou_Campanar_2008_6.jpg. Lobo (howl?) 22:11, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I couldn't tell that it was a permanent installation from the closeups. I've restored them. Thanks for the clarification! – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:24, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Whoops! Some of the deleted ones are very clearly copyrighted characters: Batman, that guy from Futurama, etc... Those haven't been restored, but the rest have been. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:28, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I was trying to explain that, but a conflict ocurred :S. Photo with the Incredibles sculpture is another one... Lobo (howl?) 22:32, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
As I remember, that three ninots are the only ones that were derivative works, and for that was my complaint. Lobo (howl?) 22:41, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
OK, would you mind clarifying what this is? Is it a permanent outdoor installation, or does it come apart & is only up temporarily? I'm not sure I want to be deleting and undeleting these repeatedly unless I'm sure what's going on. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:46, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
You have more information on w:Fallas. You are right, Fallas are mostly sculptures that are only up temporarily, and for that reason characters (ninots) with copyright I understand now that those images are not allowable on commons, and I agree with that deletions. However, most of ninots are works wich only purpose is being made on Fallas, with no copyright holders, and I think that its storage on commons has no problem. Sorry again for my English. Lobo (howl?) 23:24, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
OK then. I think that they are all not permitted because they are temporary structures; the (sculptor|architect|artist) holds the copyright, and the images are derivative works. I'm deleting them, but you're welcome to take it to Commons:Undeletion requests if you like (for example, you said that there is no copyright holder; I can't see how that would be so, but you can make your case there). Again, thanks for your help here. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 23:52, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Pronunciation files

Hello. You just deleted some pronunciation files because they were duplicates (en-uk-poor.ogg; en-uk-clique 2.ogg; en-uk-or.ogg). They are duplicates, but only because they're homonyms and the templates on Wiktionary (where the files are used) require them to have particular file names. Could you restore these files or else find some other solution? Thanks and regards, —Celestianpower háblame 22:09, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Files restored. But if the template requires them to be a certain name, then the template was badly designed. It should instead be fixed so this is not a problem. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:30, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

HI DELETE←Belia

Non-deletion of coats of arms

I see that you restored a number of coats of arms from ngw, based on the comments of GijsVdL. However, in a few cases the decision was wrong; the template that was attributed to the images was ngw, but some of these are not from my hand and thus do not fall under the ngw template. These can be deleted, as there is no source info (I added template ngw2 there). These are:

Images

What do you mean? I got them from Flickr and said that they were "Some Rights Reserved". Speed CG 15:58, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Those matched a slew of copyvio uploads around the same time, and were deleted as such. Furthermore, it is unlikely that the Flickr user hold the rights, and thus is not in a position to release them under a free license. As always, you may ask at COM:UNDEL to have them restored. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:21, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't see how that' not clear. They were nominated because they're useless... only it turns out there not. So they weren't deleted. That's abundantly clear, I think. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:14, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
I said they are not in scope because they have no educational purpose. --Avron 06:48, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

The permission is grated by the original uploader on the en Wikipeida.--Sanandros 11:09, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

No, actually "I grant permission for this image to be used in this article" is not sufficient permission. That's a Wikipedia-only permission, which isn't even allowed at Wikipedia, and certainly isn't sufficient at Commons. Unless the original uploader from en.wikipedia provides explicit permission to freely license this work, it will be deleted. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:07, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

removing of photographs on commons

hi, i am a regular wikipedia user and have oocasionally uplaoded material onto commons to illustrate artciles. a few times now images have been dleetde, last time by you (RAKericho.jpg). as i understand this was done on a technicality (e.g. field not filled out) the images in case are in the public domain so i don;t understand the concern- i do know it's quite a abit of work for me to put it back in. can i ask you to allow for some more time for a response before you delete images on technicalities like this? sorry if i didn;t fill out all the details and made a mistake- but i dont; visit my commons page regularly.

thanks Mtl1969 11:59, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

No, that's not why it was deleted. As stated in the deletion reason, it is a copyright violation. To be more accurate, it's a derivative work. The derivative works decision tree is very useful. As you can see by following the tree down, that image is not ok to upload to Commons. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:10, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

This image is not fair use. The Navy source website specifically states "RELEASED" and is therefore public domain. Work done by a contractor for the government/Navy is owned by the government/Navy and therefore the license is justifiably public domain. I have restored the image (since it was deleted) and reverted your edit. I believe I had this discussion on Wikipedia with the image at perhaps IFD if you wish to search there for it. I'm sorry

I don't know what license use to that photos! can you tell me?

Please see COM:L; you must not upload images taken from websites unless those images are freely-licensed. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 17:04, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

I recently tagged a number of this user's images with {{copyvio}}. It appears that at least one of them may have been approved by OTRS. Does this same # apply to all of the user's images from the http://www.adamshamilton.com website? Thanks! --Bossi (talkgallerycontrib) 12:09, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes, it does. I misread the email the first time 'round. I'll fix up the rest. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:37, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

PosterBilal-TheGipsyPrince.jpg

Hello Mike.lifeguard, You have deleted the file File:PosterBilal-TheGipsyPrince.jpg that I had uploaded on the Commons. However, I did explain on the image talk page that this post was not a copyright violation, that I took the original photo personally and I designed the poster image myself. Also, in your message on my talk page User talk:Bahaab, you call the file File:Molkom logga.jpg!!! There is something wrong somwehere... Please restore my file File:PosterBilal-TheGipsyPrince.jpg, which, again does not violate any copyright. Thank you. Bahaab 04:45, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Bahaab (talk)

You may request undeletion at COM:UNDEL. You will very likely be asked to confirm permissions with OTRS at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Please be aware that if you designed this movie poster as part of your work, you very likely do not own the copyright. If that's the case, then the photo is a derivative work not suitable for use at Commons. Yes, it seems I referred to the incorrect image on your talk page; sorry. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 14:48, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for your guidance. I will request undeletion at COM:UNDEL. FYI the poster is not for a movie. Bilal is a singer. Bahaab (talk)18:53, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Deleted contents

I never posted this picture Image:200px-Spirit-Squad.jpg. Are you confused with another user? Thanks. --Eustress 14:56, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I meant Image:Business with Integrity.JPG. Second time in as many days I've done this :( Sorry. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 17:16, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

OP blocks

There is far less need here to block OPs than maybe other projects. Also when you do block them can you take a look at their contribs - this one for example has legit contribs. I know what the rules say but I don't think blindly blocking OPs on a multi region project is a good idea. There are quite a few parts of the world where OPs are quite a necessary way of contributing to the project - these days & for Commons & Meta I only block ones which are actually disrupting the project - cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:02, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

AO/ACB should be fine. This negates the problem of IP-hopping since edits are tied to a single account which is accountable for them. Using OPs is technically forbidden entirely, but as I say, I'm happy to allow registered users access. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:16, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Bear in mind that even en wp does not blindly block OPs reported by the bot when they are not disruptive. I would object to blocking constructive IPs here quite strongly --Herby talk thyme 17:04, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
I will allow account creation on these IPs in the future, but I believe that will stop only unsophisticated (spam|vandal)bots. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:12, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. The mistake was not mine, but the person who supplied the photos. He sent me the whole package and then realised that some photos should not be there in the first place, so it does qualify for the speedy deletion. I was simply unaware of the mass request possibility. --Zureks 11:46, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Great, thank you. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:14, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Copyright violations

Hello! Concerning copyright violations, are you dealing with coat of arms and logos? Because I have received a message on French Wikipédia to tell me not to upload some anymore on Commons, but on Wikipédia. Is it the same thing you're blaming me for? Can and may still upload simple photographs at least?

Thanks for warning anyway, faithfully, --Floflo 17:16, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

No, you uploaded several logos such as Image:Logo de Metz-Tessy.JPG, which are copyright violations. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 17:20, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Maaaaaaate....

You amaze me! giggy (:O) 08:06, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Well thank you :D – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 13:07, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

And you are?

Locus standi please. Chensiyuan 13:49, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

What is this in relation to? – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 14:05, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
  • This comment you left on his talk page, which he subsequently reverted with the summary "rvv." His intention in using an arcane legal term to ask a simple question is probably meant to intimidate (he continually reminds anyone who will listen that he attends law school at the National University of Singapore), but I gather that his intent is to ask you what your business is in telling him what to do. I, on the other hand, appreciate your input on the matter and will continue to seek it if I encounter any further problems with this user. Thanks again, Cumulus Clouds 23:29, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
I know perfectly well what it means, but it seems to have no relation to any reality I'm aware of. That's another strike. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:25, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Pantani pictures

Two pictures were deleted on april 27 (see there). Why can't I find them in the deletion archive?

Those are derivatve works, but there is no FOP in Italy. Therefore, they're copyright violations, and were deleted as such. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:56, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Anthony Eden picture

I have noticed that you deleted the image Image:AREden.jpg. Why did you do this? the image is not a copyvio but came from the Imperial War Museum collections is free under expired crown copyright, and was clearly marked as such. The source can be seen here. Could you please restore it forthwith, and take more care to check what you are deleting in the future. G-Man 17:27, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for noting this mistake. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:58, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi,

What do you mean not blatant? This is obvious: a cup is 3D, so there is no need for discussion. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 11:34, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello Mike,

Tell me, please, why didn't you give me a heads up before deleting this photo? I'm disappointed. Gridge 00:34, 22 May 2008 (UTC).

Sorry, I don't see the problem here. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 11:07, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
I uploaded this photo. You delete this photo without warning. Gridge 12:18, 22 May 2008 (UTC).
Well, given that it was nominated on Feb 8 this should hardly be a surprise. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:33, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
And how exactly I'm supposed to know about that? Gridge 17:47, 22 May 2008 (UTC).
You should have been notified when it was nominated. I see that didn't happen; I apologize on behalf of whoever didn't do that when they should have. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:05, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Accepted. Have a good summer. Gridge 19:06, 22 May 2008 (UTC).
