--Sators (talk) 06:03, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi!

Hi Martin H! We must have been tagging the Sigur Ros image at the same time. By the time I finished figuring out how to put the link in the reason field your copyvio tag was on it. I deleted your tag and finished putting mine so that there would be a reason and link to source recorded. Didn't mean to step on your toes! Cheers! Brynn (talk!) 20:49, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

no problem, use {{copyvio|1=url}} if the url contains a "=", ortherwise the template will not show it. Greetings from Germany, -Martin H. (talk) 20:55, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Cool. Thanks for the tip! Brynn (talk!) 21:30, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Latest files

Hey, thanks for your work watching new uploads for copyvios. Considered becoming an admin so you can delete them yourself? -mattbuck (Talk) 02:12, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Hm, there are at least one pro and two arguments contra an candidacy. I like commons, maintenance is very interesting because of consuming images and stories, building an archive of free media files is a great idea. But then commons is very complicated. There are hundred of licences and maintenance templates. Im not certain in many cases i.e. taggin an image with {{subst:npd}} or {{copyvio}}, it is a fine line between (1) error of the uploader who is the author and copyright holder and (2) image is copied from www without any chance to contact the copyright holder to make the image available under a free licence. This might be easier with good language skills (englisch and in many, many cases on commons spanish) i don't have. So i'm interested but yet to doubtful of my skills in language and commons conventions. --Martin H. (talk) 06:21, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Commons is much nicer than wikipedia and suck I find - more laid back. You don't need a particularly good grasp of english, unless you intend to go wrangling with discussions on the minutiae of copyright law. True, there is a fine line between user error and simple vandalism - but other maintenance tasks can be more interesting. I'm currently trying to geotag all UK motorsport images (biiiig job), and you can always just work on that which interests you. -mattbuck (Talk) 19:35, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Hidden category

Would you please unhide the category? I often find it quite useful when I'm working with one image to go to other images that I've uploaded. Nyttend (talk) 00:48, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

I didn't know that was possible; I assumed that, as I can see it on the English Wikipedia (where I'm an admin) but not on here (where I'm not an admin), the ability to see hidden categories was a tool of being an admin. Nyttend (talk) 01:24, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

On speedy deletion

Yes, if a copyright violation seems very obvious to you, then you should tag it with {{copyvio|reason or source}}. Bear in mind that administrators very often delete things with no warning and without things ever being tagged, so even getting the tag is a lot more chance than many images get. :) Normal deletion is preferred only for non-obvious cases. Use your judgment there. In this case, I think speedying it would have been the right thing to do (which isn't a criticism of you nominating it; you were just being cautious, and caution has its place here). Love, Lewis Collard! (lol, internet) 14:32, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Many Thanks

When I created this category; Category:User:Producer, I was not sure if I was doing the right thing . You made it much easier for me, thanks a million :-). May I add this category to the many other miscellaneous photos that I have released too?
On the other hand, and since I also am actually an executive producer in real life, I have released photos of some of my productions under this unhidden category Category:Released by the producer with coordination and help from Tarawneh, which I would like to keep as unhidden. Cheers.--Producer (talk) 15:14, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

New user talk pages

Hi & thanks for the work you are doing on tagging newly uploaded material. Can I ask that you try and place a {{Welcome}} template on any new pages as well as any tag notices. Given the multi-lingual nature of Commons it may help folk who are confused find their way around a little better. Many thanks --Herby talk thyme 09:15, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi, i already use the user message gadget, so it is no problem. I'll try to attend that every new user first get his welcome tag befor he will get a notice of copyvio or something. --Martin H. (talk) 11:31, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Appreciated & thanks for the work. Regards --Herby talk thyme 11:29, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Speedy query

Hi (& appreciating the work you give me :)) - do you know that the OTRS ticket here is not valid or something? I'll remove the tag for now if you want to check on it (I do not have OTRS access). Regards --Herby talk thyme 15:59, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi, maybe Pageflakes gave a OTRS ticket or not, i think that It doesn't matter. The Google Maps Terms of Use say:
For business users, Google Maps is made available for your internal use only and may not be commercially redistributed (...)
So i think, a screenshot including parts of google maps can't be licenced under a free licence because parts of the Screenshot still remains to be unfree, never mind who is the author/rightholder of the website. Maybe i'm wrong, so it is not a good idea to request speedydeletion, i'll go the long way of a regular deletion request. --Martin H. (talk) 16:13, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
I see what you mean - however I think you are right to go for a deletion request. Not completely straightforward. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 18:29, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Renaming actions

Hi Martin. As one of the admins who have to clean up all the renaming-actions (e.g. replacing them in all the projects and deleting the duplicates), could you please just rename images that really need renaming. That means images that have a cryptic or missleading name, but not images that already have a proper name that you don't find satisfying enough or have a extension in capital letters. By those nonsence-renamings you ridicule the original uploader who gave the image a proper name, you put a strain on the toolserver and you create a huge amount of work for other people who have to clean up. Thanks. -- Cecil (talk) 19:53, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

The rename of images with .JPG.jpg were my own uploads from flickr, i will use the badname template in future. --Martin H. (talk) 12:44, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
'.JPG' is not a bad name. It does not matter if the extension is in small or capital letters. Lots of images here have capital letters as extensions since many cameras create them that way. Each software can work with that. Renaming that (and badname-template is the same, it will just be done without a bot) will just cause a duplicate, the image with the capital extension will still stay on the webserver, you will just not see it anymore. It will use webspace and the new image with the small letters will use extra webspace. And in case that the image is already used in the projects it will have to be replaced there either, by creating a new version of the article with the new image. Both the replaceing in other projects and the deletion of the unneeded duplicate need to be done by people in their free time and since each replacement needs to be checked carefully it needs quite some time to do that. So actually the whole renaming does not bring any positive effects, just work for others. -- Cecil (talk) 20:51, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
I know how valuable human collaboration on commons is, i didn't knew (at the time i renamed some 4-5 xxx.JPG.jpg, madagascar related images after i uploadedwith the flickr-webtool on 24 July) that the renaming results in a duplicate and a deletion request. Im now confirmed for renaming (26 July) and know, what happens by setting the rename tag and will not do this because of such small changes anymore.
But: The template {{Welcome}} says: Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}} , and the upload of .JPG.jpg was a mistake made by myself and certainly i will call my mistake off by using the badname template (instead of the rename template). The welcome template is used on nearly every new users discussion page, so there should be no problem with this. --Martin H. (talk) 00:07, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Ready now? --Kanonkas(talk) 13:07, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
Hm,
  • what about activity of commons admins? I did some breaks in my contributions to commons and de.wiki (de.wiki the last two month) and i will do so in future. I think there should be no problem with breaks after this is a voluntary engagement and the breaks are not for ever - im right?
  • Im not a specialist in copyrights, i just like images and i like to search the web. Maybe i like to proof that im right with a suspicion of a copyright violation. I hope this kind of investigations are accepted on commons, is it?
  • Im not an author, i contributed only one single image. I hope that it is not required for an admin to know anything about photography (my only image is rather ugly) or contribute to commons with images, im right?
  • Im not detecting every copyright violation, im especially not familiar with the concept of "no freedom of panorama" (sounds crazy to my german ears ;]) and derivative works of sculptures and some other. It is no problem if an admin doesnt know every copyright concept, isnt it?
  • If you can approve my statements and answer my questions with yes im ready to try it. --Martin H. (talk) 19:14, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
Of course, all of the above aren't really an issue with you. Everybody can take breaks here, but at least be a little active :) & it's fine that you don't know all of this COM:FOP, it can be pretty confusing. At least you know how to get other kind of copyright violations & you've done some COM:DR work. The images part, well you're fine on that part too, no worries that you haven't uploaded "your own" images, at least you've uploaded some images! Well all we're missing now is to hear a yes, let us go to COM:RFA & do it :) --Kanonkas(talk) 19:25, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes --Martin H. (talk) 19:31, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
As you wish, I'll do it tomorrow morning. --Kanonkas(talk) 20:15, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
We're going live, just accept it & I'll transclude it, or you can do it if you want. --Kanonkas(talk) 11:14, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

about the CC license of Elysson de Castros images

Hi, can you tell me why the cc licence on Elysson de Castros images are invalid? you don't believe he took the pic himself? But the pic carry with Geo infomation, where come from then if not by himself?--atlaslin (talk) 02:26, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok, first the geotags: his stream consists of several image with tags, e.g. this image of Flocke. Flocke is an Polar bear from the zoo in w:de:Nürnberg. Flocke was strictly seperated from public, only a very few camera teams became the chance to photograph or film the little polar bear. Geotags are easyly created. According to his album cine, art & entertainment: There is Melrose place, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones. All images are low quality. All images are taken in Sao Paulo, even Melrose Place and the Oscar Awarsds with Sophia Loren. There should be no doubt. --Martin H. (talk) 02:36, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
I think even the geo tag can be made in Sao Paulo, but we stll can't judge these photos are not taken by himself before add the tags?--atlaslin (talk) 02:46, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Template:Userpageimage

Hi, I am wondering what the advantage is of using a the Template:Userpageimage that only adds a category Images of users. This template seems to have little added value, added confusion and potential bot problems. Am I missing something ? --Foroa (talk) 21:34, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

I use it for adding a category/the correct category to the image following the instruction on Category:Images of users, the template also clarifies that the image is not within the scope but that it is tolerated on commons. Of course this can also be written on top of the category. --Martin H. (talk) 21:48, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Help required....please

Hi,

I wonder if you could look at Image:2006FACupFinal.JPG. I do not understand why the Template is on this image stating "It requires review because CommonSense could not categorise the image during transfer. Additionally, there may be errors in any..."? I would be grateful if you could look at this and remove the template ? Many thanks. Seth Whales (talk) 22:42, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

The bot transfer is not very good in categorizing files, so this transfered image just needs a human review. You may check the categories, and by the way description, licence, source, etc., and then remove the template. --Martin H. (talk) 22:46, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. Seth Whales (talk) 22:58, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for taking care of that. I was not aware this was an instance of flickr-washing. Superm401 - Talk 00:17, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

No problem. But what does flickr"washing" mean? --Martin H. (talk) 00:18, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
Flickrwashing means a process of uploading copyrighted materials to a Flickr account under CC license that is acceptable here on Commons, then uploading it here under the same CC license thus making it freely licensed when in fact they're not. --Kimse (talk) 08:33, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Could you please rename Image:Oscarsborg from east.jpg as outlined on the talk page? --Ekko (talk) 06:47, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

done --Martin H. (talk) 08:08, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
It doesn't look like it. The file still has it's old name, and there is no file called "Oscarsborg fortress, from southwest.jpg" --Ekko (talk) 17:46, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Be patient, i simply changed the rename-template, now a bot (maybe BetacommandBot) will check the page, he will see that a user from the list of trusted users was the last editor and he will move the image on his new name. Depending on the bot activity it will tage a few days or maybe some weeks. The result is a renamed file like this. --Martin H. (talk) 17:51, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
And i made the Image:Image:... mistake with the template, thank you for asking me again. --Martin H. (talk) 17:54, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

DotA Screens

Hello Martin, I'd like to ask you why are screenshots unacceptable on commons, because Blizzard and IceFrog aren't denying to relase screenshots of their software to public places on the internet.

Your sincerly Hynek --Turbo2200kBps (talk) 18:09, 26 September 2008 (UTC) PS: Excuse, pls, my poor english.

My english is bad too, no problem. Maybe they did, but that doesnt mean, that this images are free. Commons only accepts free images. Free images are images published under a free licence, and only the holder of copyright can publish an image under a free licence. Free means free for any purpose, including comercial use. If Blizzard or IceFrog publish a screenshot they do it for marketing etc. and not that everybody can use their content for what ever he likes to do. --Martin H. (talk) 18:18, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
I am little bit confused, so it mean that I can't publish this screenshots under any licence, or there's way to publish it ? Screenshots being primary used as proofs in leagues or to report cheaters etc. I doubt if Blizzard is not allowing to use screenshots on the internet. --Turbo2200kBps (talk) 18:38, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Maybe they accept the use for such private things or to promote their video game, but they are not accepting commercial (and if the did: we didnt have a written permission). You should read Commons:Derivative works and especialy Commons:Derivative works#But how can we illustrate topics like Star Wars or Pokémon without pictures?, the helppage is about photos of statues or toys and something like that, but it is exactly the same with screenshots of software or video games. --Martin H. Ok. I am an expert in the castilian wikipedia (spanish) but commons... XD. I wrote a better explication. Tchüss! --Thor8 (talk) 17:31, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Copyright Issues

- - Hi, Martin. - - The photos Arsenio.jpg and Machito.jpg are digital archives created by me. For the creation of this archives I take pictures from records that doesn´t consigns anything about the copyright of the pictures. The original pictures was probably taken in early forties and I saw them from the firths time in old recordings compilations made by Tumbao Cuban Classics. They especified they have reserved copyright for the recordings but they dont say anything about - the pictures. This is what i have to say about this two uploadins. Excuse my english and thanks for your time--Juan 15:40, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi, you should go to the deletion discussion of the images, they are linked inside the red box on the imagepages. And: Please do not remove the deletion request untill it is finished. --Martin H. (talk) 15:48, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Juanfa61 images uploading and deletion resume

Hi, Martin:

First of all i want to thank you for the work-journey we' ve been trough. It' s been very much clarifiing for me and the respect-level of the communication its been undubitable.

I want to talk about three remainig images in this proyect.

Machito1jpg. It is not a bad quality image but according with the policy of the proyect MUST BE DELETED. It is, saddly, a foto taken to a CD inlay. Its been a repeated mistake for my side and i will not commit it again.

VictorVictor, i will soon replace the archive, maybe, as you told me, with the real image and wait for someone that can make the necesary edition to put the image in the wikipedia articule of the dominican singer.

About Transporte1.jpg, i'll take another image of my foto to treat of improve the visual quality. Althouh, the image itself is not exactly 'clear". Any way, i' ll do my best, hopin' that the copyritgh question have been succesfully cleared. I considere that the uploadin of this image must be keeped. Is an historic visual document of this dominican rock band and is and essential part of the band articule in the wikipedia.

Thnaks for the categorization of Juanfco1.jpg. At the end,a question. How can I rename an image?

Hoping to cause you less problems in the future, consider me a new friend, allways yours--Juan 17:51, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Juan, renaming is very easy and possible in 2 ways:
Alternative 1.: write the following to the bottom of the imagepage: {{rename|xyz.jpg}} - the xyz is the new name you want
Alternative 2.: Upload the image again under the filename you want, write the following on the bottom of the imagepage of the image with the bad name: {{badname|xyz.jpg}}, an administrator will delete this image because it is a duplicate with a bad name.
If you have any more questions: just ask. --Martin H. (talk) 21:28, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:M44a.jpg

I'm sorry, I have uploaded this photo a long time ago and I forgot about it. I asked author about permission, and got it, but later, when I asked him for an official e-mail permission for ORTS, but he didn't replied. I'm afraid this photo will have to be deleted from commons. Sorry for problem. --Winiar 15:05, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

deletet it. --Martin H. (talk) 20:56, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
