Pay attention to copyright
File:Not Exactly.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hi MarkTraceur, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:MarkTraceur/editDescriptions.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

issues with editDescriptions.js[edit]

hello, I noticed a few wrong edits from someone using your editDescriptions.js' script.
When descriptions are provided via the mld (multi lingual description) template.
your script makes not description being shown.

Esby (talk) 12:38, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Esby: I'm going to be a bit of a bastard here and tell you to look at {{Mld}}, paying special attention to the "Recommended use at" row in the criteria table. {{Mld}} is recommended for use outside of file pages, I would imagine, because if we had multiple formats for descriptions, we would be less able to read the data with machines. And lo, this machine is now less able to read the data. :) --MarkTraceur (talk) 14:28, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
the fact the mld template is recommanded somewhere does not mean it must not be used elsewhere. Your script has a bug, fix it or prevent the script from deleting data and causing possible vandalism? Esby (talk) 15:27, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Did you know we have a JavaScript parser? It's quite old but still seems to work.
mw.loader.using( 'ext.gadget.libWikiDOM', function() {
 console.log( mw.libs.wikiDOM.parser.text2Obj( $('#wpTextbox1').val() ) );
} );
-- Rillke(q?) 16:34, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Issue fixed. Esby (talk) 11:23, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Huh, I see no changes in/ to the script? -- Rillke(q?) 14:36, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, because it is a design issue. The script checks for Category:Language_templates to construct the list of language templates like {{En}} to edit,
the issue is that the pages in that category are not necessarily language template as the script awaits...
I changed the category of {{Mld/start}} {{Mld/end}} (which were categorized when creating the template 5 years ago...)
So basically the main issue is 'fixed' (hiding of information, resulting in possible loss of information), but there might be troubles with other template in this category,
{{Mld}} is also probably not supported for editing right now with the script...
Esby (talk) 14:56, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Esby: I don't think it ever will be editable with this script. The only thing I see changing here with respect to {{Mld}}, is handling it only to replace it with multiple language template calls. I'm not going to ignore the template authour's recommendation when it comes to where their template should be used...and clearly, the output structure is different, or there would have been no issue...consistency in format seems like a worthy goal here. --MarkTraceur (talk) 15:46, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth: It wasn't the template's author's recommendation; I boldly threw this table to the template documentation attempting to standardize and documenting how current practise (mostly) looks like, including considerations from previous discussions. -- Rillke(q?) 16:08, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, I initially thought that removing the two templates from the category was enough, but it seems not, here's a fix for showing multilingual div when the script is loaded. diff (it is not taking into account the multilingual div, it is just ignoring it when it is present.)Esby (talk) 18:18, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Zombie page[edit]

Hi Mark. Good day to you. Could you see what this page is all about? Related discussions are here, but the plan on getting in zapped was discussed on IRC. Regards, Rehman 11:02, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Rehman: Gooood morning. A brief adventure, figuring this one out, but I think you'll enjoy it.
At first I thought it was the default message page, but that wouldn't make much sense, as I don't think messages can have slashes in their names. So theory one, dashed. Er, slashed.
Then I thought it might have been created before at some point, but there was no history. So clearly that's not it.
Well, then I tried going to MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown/asnotehuetnohanthoeu and the page was still there. It turns out most combinations of characters will bring you to that same page. Except for a select few: Non-English language codes. MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown/fr, for example, is the French version of the message. So basically, MediaWiki thought, "Oh, here's a helpful native speaker of the language 'proposal'. I don't have a clue about that language, but this person apparently does, so I'll just give them the current English text so they know what they're translating, and let them translate their little hearts out." Thanks a bunch, MediaWiki.
Not sure what your goal here is, but if you want to propose a new value for the message, you might want to do it on MediaWiki talk:Deletereason-dropdown/proposal or some other page in the talk space. --MarkTraceur (talk) 15:22, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Since it's an automated thing, I guess there is no need of zapping it then. :) Have a good day. Rehman 02:07, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Default language for editdescriptions.js[edit]

would it be possible to make english (en) the default language option instead of 'aa', most times i end up saving after changing the description not realizing that the language is set at 'aa'.. I know other may have faced the same problem..English is the most widely used language on commons for description and categories so why not make it default by default?..hehe..--Stemoc 14:36, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Stemoc: Should be set now.
File:Climber reduce.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Uw-download.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Cropping etc.[edit]

Hi Mark, I saw your presentation of editing features within Commons here. Looks really cool! One question -- just in case it hasn't crossed your radar. Have you see the CropTool gadget? It's tremendously useful (but doesn't have the rotating features etc.) I do think there's a bot (or gadget?) that handles rotations, but I forget the name.

One thing lacking with CropTool, I haven't been able to use it to crop PNG files (though that feature was theoretically added a few months ago). I've had a bit of discussion with the developer, but we haven't been able to figure out why it doesn't work for me. Anyway -- glad you're working on this stuff. You've probably already seen these, but just wanted to make you aware in case you haven't. -Pete F (talk) 06:21, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Peteforsyth: Yeah, I have seen them! They're great tools. This editor is partly about fixing images that are "wrong" somehow (like rotations, with the bot) but also about creating new works from existing ones. One example that I bring up frequently is group pictures of elected figures - we may not have individual headshots of, say, every City Council member from Decorah, Iowa. But we might have a group shot of the entire council in a high enough resolution to produce headshots for each of them. Admittedly, that's a long shot, but the general idea is taking high-resolution images we already have, and producing images of their subsets.
A lot of the benefit in this, I think, is going to be when we've integrated the tool into the upload pipeline - I didn't mention that in my showcase presentation, actually. Facebook, Flickr, and most mobile applications now have image editing tools that allow you to stop after uploading an image and edit it. Following the technology trend in that regard is a big reason I think this work is important. (we can debate about whether that means we're "like Facebook", but I think Facebook is a great technology leader these days, and it wouldn't hurt to replicate their systems, if not their business models)
Thanks for the note, have a nice weekend! --MarkTraceur (talk) 16:12, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Cool -- the example you give (cropping an individual politician out of a group photo) is actually something I've done several times. The only instance I can think of predates CropTool: File:Tina Kotek 2011.jpg So it's not a long shot at all -- it's a common and useful practice, and one that will be even more common with better tools :) Yes, if it's part of the upload process that could be worthwhile. I would worry a little that people might upload only the retouched version of a file -- sometimes, e.g. when adjusting the colors, it's useful to have the original in the file history, as a reuser might retouch the colors differently for a different purpose (and the lossiness of using the derivative photo is undesirable). So if you haven't considered it, it might be worth considering an option to upload both versions, and include the original in the file history. -Pete F (talk) 18:26, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Peteforsyth: Actually, it might make sense for us to upload the original, and then upload the edited version over it with the same filename...it would take longer on the user's end, but preserve the file history. Thanks for the idea! --MarkTraceur (talk) 18:30, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I was trying to say, but I guess my word salad didn't capture it so well. Glad the idea came across, and glad to help! -Pete F (talk) 20:37, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

BTW: For rotating there is Rotatebot. When you place

{{Rotate|90}}

at any picture it will be rotated automatically for 90 degrees.--Kopiersperre (talk) 13:29, 17 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Kopiersperre: Hi! Yes, I know about Rotatebot. We are hoping this interface will be a little more user-friendly, and self-explanatory. Besides, it will use more centralized and standardized MediaWiki technology, which in my view as a maintainer is much better. --MarkTraceur (talk) 15:30, 17 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
