Welcome!

Hello, Madman2001, and welcome to Wikimedia Commons. I hope you like it here and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

  • First steps - will tell you everything you need to know about how to upload, what licenses are OK and what information to include in your image summary
  • Babel guide - Commons is truly international, here's how to handle some multilingual issues
  • Commons FAQ - has some answers to common Commons questions
  • The Community Portal - help us organise and improve our files
  • A Gallery of your images - please correct any that are untagged or orphans (put them in a category)

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Commoner! If you haven't already done so, you might also want to open an account on a Wikipedia in your preferred language, or one of the other Wikimedia projects. Please be sure to sign your name on Talk and vote pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date. If you have any questions, drop a note on the village pump, the Help desk, or contact an administrator. I look forward to your contributions!

Thank you for adding more information to the Charles V image I uploaded! It was very helpful! Jon Harald Søby 17:17, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Xalapa Anthropology Museum[edit]

Hello, I saw you changed the category in somes files from Xalapa Anthropology Museum to the name in Spanish. As far as I know the categories should be in English and besides we already have that category in English. --JLCA 17:22, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Tetitla Teotihuacan Great Goddess mural (Abracapocus).jpg[edit]

Hi. We have a bot that double checks images from Flickr. Please be sure to include a link directly to the image in question on Flickr in addition to the photographer attribution. The bot couldn't find the photo with this one-- I added the link for this image for you, please be sure to include it in the future to prevent possible problems with images being bot tagged as unidentified source. Also, thank you for finding and uploading such fine photos of pre-Columbian art! Cheers, -- Infrogmation 15:15, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

tarascan culture photo[edit]

Hello Madman2001, I'm really interested in tarascan culture, and the photo of incese burner is really good. Could you tell me where is the original piece? Thank you. Helen.

Sorry about that. This incense burner is on display at the Snite Museum of Art at the w:en:University of Notre Dame. I updated the image with this information. Madman2001 06:05, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Las_Bocas_Olmec_baby-face_figurine_(Bookgrrrl).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Rendering problems[edit]

Hi Madman2001 - thanks for your help sorting the rendering problems with Image:Merseyrailnetworkmap.svg! I'm new to using Inkscape - any advice on where I went wrong? I did convert it it to plain SVG and all the text to paths, but couldn't work out what else I needed to do to get rid of the black squares! Kvj 12:19, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

The best is to move it by hand: create the new cat Category:Mesoamerican figurines, replace it in all images and categories it is used in, and make a deletion request for the old cat Category:Mesoamerican figurine. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 15:04, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

cc by sa 2.0 flickr license[edit]

Dear User Madman, I just made this correction here to this: [1] and to your other uploaded flickr image today because Dwyer's images are licensed as "cc by sa 2.0." It has now passed flickr review: Image:Teotihuacan Feathered Serpent (Jami Dwyer).jpg So, when you upload her flickr images, you should choose the "Uploaded to Flickr under Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 2.0" license option. I hope this helps.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Thanks for your contribution at my discussion site. It´s always nice to see that an uploaded picture is really useful for somebody. But, sorry, the one uploaded is the only image of this particular Teotihuacan ballgame marker I´ve got. Xenophon 9.55, 25 October 2008 ( UTC )

Hello, Madman2001!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Tree model software[edit]

Madman2001,

I noticed that you made some corrections to the tree model of the Maya language family. First of all, thank you for that. Second, I wanted to ask you what software you're using to make tree models?

I am glad could help with these maps and charts. I use the freeware program, Inkscape. Try it -- you'll like it. Thanks, Madman2001 (talk) 03:38, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What should I call you?[edit]

Hey, I'd like to use this underwater panther jug image in a remix. The license calls for attribution, and you seem to be the creator. What should I call you? -- Alarob (talk) 17:52, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tenochtitlan map and chinampas area[edit]

I think the Tenochtitlan/Texcoco/Chinampas figure at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lake_Texcoco_c_1519.png is fantastic. Wondering though what the data source is for the chinampas area (shaded teal) is. I don't see a paper or similar citation that describes where that area came from.
