First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Nice with pictures of Horace Engdahl from when he proclaimed the winner of the Nobel prize. Did you do anything fo wikinews? //moralist (talk) 20:49, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Unfortunately no, I don't have the time to write anything for Wikinews. I just took the images of the Chemistry and Literature Press conference expecting that anybody uses them on Wikinews. However, up to now I couldn't find any article. On Monday I'm going to attend the Press Conference of the Economics Prize hoping that somebody will writes a Wikinews article on it. --Prolineserver (talk) 21:16, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello, Prolineserver!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Failed uploads[edit]

Hi Prolineserver, some uploads at User:Prolineserver/MSC failed:

 • One because of missing extension ( msc_2009-Saturday,_14.00_-_16.00_Uhr-Moerk_001._Griechenland )
 • 58 because of url encoding (like msc_2007-Saturday,_14.00_-_16.00_Uhr-M%C3%B6rk045_Iwanow.jpg )

Probable copyfraud of your Montagnier image at Flickr[edit]

Hi Prolineserver,
in case you are not identical to Flickr user wjwmorrow, it seems wjwmorrow has copied your image of Prof. Montagnier to Flickr without any credit to you, thereby suggesting ownership over the image. This Flickr user had done the same with my 1995-image of Montagnier (File:LucMontagnier1995 065.jpg), that now has been taken down[2] after my formal complaint against Flickr. Aas your image was uploaded only yesterday, it seems to was his reaction to the deletion of my image from his account.

TUSC token 7cc05081b815c9d02eeb8d55618124a8[edit]

I am now proud owner of a TUSC account!

Hello Prolineserver.

I am questioning you about your two images which I wrote in the Title here. This was brought to attention in the FA nom of Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Nobel Prize/archive2. Both of these images are licensed under "Attribution NonCommercial ShareAlike 2.0". However, they seem also to be attempted to be licensed under GFDL-1.2. Which is the right license?

I hope you can help! --Esuzu (talk) 11:55, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

They are not licenced under GFDL-1.2. They are licenced under GFDL-1.2-only. The way both images are licenced is completely ok. Two licences means that you can decide which of the two licences you want to use. If you need commercial use then you have to select GFDL, for everything else you could also take CC. -- Cecil (talk) 15:21, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Victoria's wedding[edit]

Hello! I've seen that you uploaded lots of photographs related to the Crown Princess of Sweden's wedding. Are there any photopgraphs of Charlene Wittstock among those? Surtsicna (talk) 19:25, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hej, I don't think I have a picture of her, even if she is on the guestlist-at least I do not remember her face (or her fiancé). I have more pictures that I didn't upload, and I may look at them at some point, but they are qualitatively bad. Btw: Thanks for cropping the pictures, but you forgot to copy the attribution line from the CC-template and the geocoordinate as well as the exif data... --Prolineserver (talk) 19:57, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Aww, too bad, Wikimedia has no photograph of the future Princess of Monaco. I hoped one could be found among your photographs, which are a real treasure. I've used them in en.wiki's articles about the Earl and Countess of Wessex, the Crown Princes and Crown Princesses of Denmark, Norway, Serbia, Belgium and Netherlands and many Swedish politicians. Any photo, regardless of quality, could be used. Anyway, I simply followed the procedure of uploading derivative work of a file from Commons which did not mention any of those things. Each file also links back to the original file where that information can be found. Surtsicna (talk) 11:02, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that these tings get lost is some bug in derivativeFX, but you probably read the red Text and compared the automatically generated new Licence and the original one. And than you had to check the checkbox that you did so. If the Attribution is not copied correctly the license is simply invalid... --Prolineserver (talk) 11:42, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry. Could you please make the corrections in one of the files (eg. File:HRH The Crown Princess of Serbia.jpg) so that I know exactly what to do in other files? Thanks. Surtsicna (talk) 12:22, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
done. I know its not you fault but a bug in the tool... Have you had a look at cropbot? --Prolineserver (talk) 14:04, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've just seen the cropbot. I hope I'll learn how to use it :) I'll start fixing the problems with the already cropped images. Surtsicna (talk) 14:40, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Question about your tool Glamorous Picture[edit]

Hello

I'm trying to have stats about a category wich contain only audio files : category:Audio files from the États généraux du multilinguisme dans les outre-mer. These files are mostly use on fr:wikibooks but I know that one is used on fr:wikipedia [4] and it does not appear in Glamorous Picture. I am a little bit surprised to see 0 hit for all the files because I know that some files have been seen by several contributors. My question is : does your tool run with audio files or not ? And for video files (I have an other category with video files and in a couple of weeks I'll need some stats too.). Thank you in advance for your answer (and for your work on these tools !). --SereinWMfr (talk) 09:34, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the files on the French Wikipedia are not in the main namespace, and are therefore hidden by default since most of the users are not interested in files in other namespaces than the main namespace. I removed the checkbox at some point to make it more userfriendly, however you can override it: If you click on "Copy the URL of this link to return to this view." you get a long url which contains ns0=1. If you change it to ns=0 it shows all namespaces. Wikibooks unfortunately doesn't work: the tool gets its data from http://stats.grok.se/ which provides Wikipedia and Commons data only. Therefore, it shows 0 hits for Wikibooks which i should change to N/A at some point. --Prolineserver (talk) 18:29, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Thanks for uploading File:Revision-wmse-2011.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Videoconvert[edit]

Hi Prolineserver, I just tried your excellent tool "videoconvert," to convert this video which I had downloaded from YouTube as an MP4: File:Turning a Resource into an Open Educational Resource.webm I have two questions:

1. Can you comment on your choice to use this command:

 • avconf -i infile.mov -acodec libvorbis -aq 7 -ac 2 -qmax 25 -threads 1 outfile.webm

instead of:

 • ffmpeg -i infile.mov outfile.webm

? I don't know much about the advantages of one over the other -- I am pleased to know there are multiple options. One thing I noted in this case is that ffmpeg produced a smaller webm file (11 MB vs. 22 MB, each using a source .mp4 file of 19 MB). I'm not sure which webm file is better quality. This is a very open ended question: I do not know a great deal about the technology, but am curious what options exist and what the pros and cons might be.

2. Have you thought about what it might take to incorporate your tool into the upload process at Commons -- permitting a user (for instance) to upload a .mp4 file, and have it automatically converted to webm for storage on Commons? Curious to know your thinking. This is under discussion at Commons:Requests for comment/MP4 Video/Analysis of responses -Pete F (talk) 21:00, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I think I may have found the answer to question #1 above: [5] (Perhaps your documentation contains a typo, "avconf" instead of "avconv" --?) -Pete F (talk) 21:04, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thank you for your feedback.
 1. I just fixed the typo in the docs, thanks. As you already saw, ffmpeg complains that it wants to be called avconv on newer systems. I tried to chose the options in a way to always get a result with a high audio&video quality, irrespective of the resolution. I tried to make the tool as easy as possible without any options for the users (and I'm going to remove some more buttons...), and there its more important to make sure that the conversion has as little loss as possible. If you have a video with a low bitrate from the beginning it might get bigger. On the other hand if you have a low bitrate and you convert it again with a low bitrate and another compression it might get really bad.
 2. I prepared it to be able to upload files directly to commons. My idea is that you upload the file to the converter, begin conversion and meanwhile can edit the image description. If its done it should get transferred to Commons automatically even if the conversion takes a while. In the future I would like to render kdenlive files in the cloud, kdenlive allows the use of online resources in the project and this would allow users to edit videos easily afterwards.
--Prolineserver (talk) 05:23, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This is great. I would love to help, if I can, getting this enabled in a way that makes it very accessible to Commons contributors. (While the editing functions would be cool too, I hope the implementation of the convert-and-upload tool doesn't get delayed in the process!) Do you plan to work this into the existing Upload Wizard, or create a separate uploading process? Would you start by creating a gadget or...? -Pete F (talk) 05:02, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, right now its a minimum viable product and a stand alone version. I won't have too much time/knowledge to integrate it into Mediawiki, but it should be pretty easy to make some links appearing on relevant places using some gadgets. --Prolineserver (talk) 06:19, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thank you for clarifying that. I'd like to enter a bugzilla request, in the hopes that somebody else might move forward with integrating it into a MediaWiki gadget or similar. However -- when I visit the tool's link today, it says it is not online. Do you know what happened? -Pete F (talk) 16:08, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, It feels toollabs is not really a production environment. The webserver/proxy system was changed (again), which stopped the webservice. Otherwise, the standard PHP environment variables are filled with internal information from the proxy servers and other, non standard variable names are used to store the original information, and those also changed every two weeks, breaking the backend each time :( --Prolineserver (talk) 07:25, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Prolineserver: Thanks a lot for your good work on this! Just FYI: I received two times the message: "(1) 1397625447-9784 – (2) 1397626383-5587 – Error The uploaded file exceeds the post_max_size directive in php.ini" although the file had only 12.59 MB. --BR, .js 09:51, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@.js: What Browser/OS are you using? This might be a problem with older versions of the Internet Explorer not supporting chunked uploads. "Chunked file uploads are only supported by browsers with support for XHR file uploads and the Blob API, which includes Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox 4+." --Prolineserver (talk) 08:16, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations on becoming a user of the GLAMwiki Toolset. You can find some frequently asked questions and helpful links for using the tool at GLAMwiki Toolset. As your first step, please add yourself to the list of users at GWToolset users and follow the good practice of creating pages explaining your new projects, as these can help create a focus for our wider community of volunteers. A standard place to set up a project page is at Batch uploading, though long term GLAM programmes may fall under GLAM. New Video Template for metadata[edit]

Hi User:Prolineserver, Atlasowa mentioned you were working on an upload and conversion tool for video on Commons and might run into some of the same question as we do. The audio-visual archive where I work will soon be donating more video (we are the providers of Media from Open Beelden), but we would like to use a different template for our metadata, the information template is just too limited. Now, I already had a custom template created template:OBvideo, based on the artwork-template, but we would much rather have a standard template:video template, but that one is already in use as a template to add tags and descriptions. The reason why we would prefer to have a standard template has everything to do with the developments at Wikidata and we would like our metadata to be fully machine-readable. What are your thoughts on creating a standard video template? Would it be used by more organizations and individuals in the community? And what would be a way to move forward with this? Thank you for your feedback! 85jesse (talk) 07:22, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I didn't think about the templates, but my spontaneous thought is compatibility: Using another template than the standard Information template might break (or at least require some modification) for example for tools. So rather than starting from a full new template I would prefer an extension of the Information template: Fill the standard information in that template, and nest another template with the additional parameters in the other_fields parameter. Than you combine compatibility with flexibility and machine readability. --Prolineserver (talk) 06:19, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think we'll move forward with the artwork template since it covers almost everything we have in our meta-data. If a standard video-template were to be created we could still change the entire category to that template. Thank you for your thoughts! 85jesse (talk) 08:39, 15 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

August in Lüneburg statt. Es würde uns sehr freuen, wenn Du Lust hast mitzumachen! Wiki Loves Monuments är på gång igen![edit]

This is an invitation to participate in the Swedish part of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition. You are getting it since you participated in 2013. The message below is in Swedish, should this be an issue you can get more information in English here or drop a message on my talk page.

Hej Prolineserver,

Kannst Du mir helfen? toollabs:videoconvert sagt:

 • 00006.MTS 45.91 MB ... published on Commons 37.98 MB
 • 00007.MTS 31.56 MB ... published on Commons 24.31 MB
 • 00008.MTS 17.79 MB ... published on Commons 20.54 MB

--user.js () 12:03, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

--Prolineserver (talk) 14:02, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

question about videoconvert[edit]

hi! I uploaded one 300+ Mb video to videoconverter and clicked "convert": no result appeared in 15 min, after refreshing the page "convert" button was active again. Does the conversion stop if page is refreshed or closed? Is there any progress bar? I am a bit confused that nothing happens with video or the process couldn't be just started and the result seen when the page is re-visited some time later. rubin16 (talk) 18:33, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hej! It seems something is going wrong with the filename starting with cyrillic letters, I have to look into it. For now I renamed the file and it should work, you can set the upload file name if you click on the Options button.
Usually after you pushed the convert button the video is send to the queue and you can close the site or reload it. Here, the render task is started after queuing a while, and in your case exits with an error, therefore the blue convert button shows up after a while again. --Prolineserver (talk) 19:56, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Thanks a lot, now it works fine :) just one more question: how do you convert it and what parameters do you use? I am a bit excited by converting of 450 MB file (mp4) to 24 MB file (webm) :) rubin16 (talk) 06:34, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, webm is pretty good:) Often rawmaterial has a much higher quality than you actually need or can see a visual difference. You can see the conversion command on the options page (after conversion), and there you can also reduce the quality if the file is too big. --Prolineserver (talk) 06:48, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Video Convert, External link option?[edit]

Might be a good idea to allow users to add external video links to convert and upload videos to commons, since its on OAuth, any "abuse" would be found and dealt with but since you have an excellent tool with a lot of promise. Not many tools can convert to .ogg or .webm and users find it hard to do it on their PC and then upload to commons and some like me cannot download 500mb files and then try to re-upload them to commons on a limited data plan..I hope you add this option in the future..--Stemoc 00:37, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Commons video convert[edit]

Hi! I' a user of this tool, and I think it's formidable, but I've found some errors in its use. For instance, I've found that some files are uploaded but not in its full lenght. For instance, this video is about 1.30 h long and in commons is only about 15 min. long. also here. In both videos, the uploaded lenght is only abou 15 min. Do you know what could have failed? (You can find the full lenght videos in Youtube, where they are properly licensed).--Coentor (talk) 10:30, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Video convert for Commons[edit]

Hi user:Prolineserver, thanks for developing this tool! It is amazing. I have used it before, but now I have trouble getting my converted video back to upload to Commons. I wanted to upload directly, but it shows me an error after completing the options («bad token»). I have checked with other files I uploaded with similar authorship details, and nothing seems to be out of place. I don't know what this means. And I can't download it. When I try yo do this, it takes me to a page where the video is embedded. Can you please help me? You can get back to me on my talk page if you want! Thanks, MCruz (WMF) (talk) 19:02, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I don't know why it stopped working, my guess is this change and this report. I tried to make the changes in the tool according to this new documentation, but it didn't seem to help and the rest of the documentation for editing and uploading is not yet updated. I also think this is a great tool, though I had a problem with it so I thought I would let you know about it. I successfully uploaded and converted a video, but when I tried to upload it to the Commons the upload failed because I had forgotten to give the video a descriptive name. However, even after changing the name of the video under "Options" and refreshing the page, the "upload to Commons" button did not reappear. I had to delete the file and start all over again.

Also, would it be possible to modify the tool so that it automatically refreshes itself from time to time, rather than requiring users to manually refresh the page? Thanks! — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:29, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, even after deleting and reuploading the video, I got the same error message: "An error occured: An error occured: unknownerror: Unknown error: 'titleblacklist-custom-filename'". It seems that deleting and reuploading the file did not purge the original information about the file from memory, because I noticed that what I typed previously for the original file reappeared under "Options". — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:41, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You get the error since your filename is blacklisted on Commons (files like VID_000123.webm), and you need to specify another one in the options before uploading.--Prolineserver (talk) 08:21, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I forgot to give the file a more descriptive name the first time around, but when I changed it the webpage wouldn't accept it. Even deleting and reuploading the file didn't work. How do I "reset" the system? — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:28, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What page didn't accept it? The options page of videoconvert? What filename did you try to use, and what error message did you get? I was changing a big fraction of the code to delete files the last days, did you try to delete it now? --Prolineserver (talk) 11:44, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I haven't tried it since October 2014 because I encountered this problem. I switched to Firefogg which seems to work well too. I'll try it again when I have a video file and see if I still have issues with it. Thanks. — Cheers, JackLee talk 13:55, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Questions/issues about Video Converter[edit]

Hello, I'm trying to use Video Converter, but it looks like I haven't been able to upload a file successfully so far. After converted the file, I clicked on Commons-Upload, the tool indicated uploading and nothing seems to happen. If I refresh the tool indicates ? check options and the Commons-Upload button has disappeared, but I can't find the file on Commons, so I assume the upload has failed.

By the way, it seems like I've been logged out after a while (even if I am still logged in on WP and Commons), because if I try to click on Options I'm redirected to OAuth.

So far I tried two uploads and both failed with 2 differents errors: first one is «badtoken: Invalid token», and the second is «stashfailed: An unknown error occurred in storage backend "local-swift-eqiad".» I have no idea what that could possibly mean...! Thanks, Gyrostat (talk) 23:30, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just uploaded a file successfuly with Video Converter, but it is only 1,3 second long. I think it's because the uploading on Video Converter failed in the first place. Gyrostat (talk) 23:35, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

infinite conversion[edit]

Hi! I uploaded a number of files yesterday and pressed "convert" button - some of them were converted yesterday but half of them got stuck in "converting" status - now it's been converting for more than 24h already... rubin16 (talk) 07:35, 2 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hej! I don't know what went wrong but it seems the files were not properly submitted to the conversion queue. I added some more debug logging and submitted the files again, it should be done soon. Let me know if this happens again. --Prolineserver (talk) 22:04, 2 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Question about converted video thumbnail[edit]

Awesome tool.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Barge-test.webm . The thumbnail or opening frame is not exactly what I would have chosen. Is there a method to set a default frame?

Thanks

When you add the video to the article you can specify the frame using the thumbtime parameter: w:Wikipedia:Creation_and_usage_of_media_files#Video_usage. --Prolineserver (talk) 08:19, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Video Converter issues: stuck at "starting conversion", and user options dialog is broken[edit]

Hallo Prolineserver,

thanks for this very useful tool! (Btw, I assume you have seen this thread?)

When trying to use it yesterday, I encountered the following two problems:

 • After uploading a video and clicking "convert", it has been stuck at "starting conversion" for about 12 hours now.
 • Some things seems to be wrong with the "User options" dialog (can provide more detail in case no errrors are immediately reproducible, but among other things clicking the "Save" button results in a 404 error).

Grüße, Tbayer (WMF) (talk) 18:49, 6 February 2015 (UTC) Hallo,[reply]

No, I've not seen this discussion as I don't follow the list.
 • There seems to be a configuration change that broke the tool, I can't fix it right now. So have to wait for https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T68882
 • This was related to another configuration change in PHP, suddenly <? didn't work anymore and code needed to be masked with <?php. This issue is fixed.
Well, I start getting tired needing to continously debug the tool after changes to the servers :( --Prolineserver (talk) 20:30, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick fix! It is working nicely again. Grüße, Tbayer (WMF) (talk) 07:17, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know why it just broke, probably some change on toollabs again :/ I have to debug it when I have some time. --Prolineserver (talk) 20:15, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Problem solved, it had to do with the change to https. Though the Oauth login request to Commons was already encrypted, a server name in the API reply used to identify the source only contained http. That server name in the reply changed to "https", and a hardcoded check verifying the source failed. --Prolineserver (talk) 20:47, 5 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Modebilder från 1916. Nordiska Kompaniet - Nordiska Museet - NMA.0032255.jpg.

Using Commons Video Convert from the Commons app[edit]

Hello, thanks for the great video converter/uploader!

I am working on the Commons app (Android app to upload pictures to Commons), and adding video support thanks to your converter would be great!

I tried to upload a video I made yesterday, and it got converted/uploaded correctly.
Just one problem: The latitude/longitude did not get parsed properly.

 • Metadata of the .mp4 file (seen by command-line tool mediainfo on Linux Ubuntu): +35.6914+139.6981/
 • Metadata on the Commons description page: 12° 20′ 42″ N, 23° 27′ 21.6″ E

The first one is in Tokyo (where the video was really taken), and the second one is somewhere in Africa. I guess there is a bug in the conversion program your service uses, or somewhere after?

Thanks a lot! Syced (talk) 06:06, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I didn't know I had support for metadata :) So I don't know where the Metadata on Commons comes from. I might add support for it if I've some spare time, the tool is actually more a MVP. How do you want to integrate it into the app? --Prolineserver (talk) 06:33, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Haha :-) Keeping metadata would be really nice as it can be very useful for categorization or just to know exactly where and when the video was shot. The integration is just an idea worth keeping in mind, I have no intention to develop it soon but it would probably use OAuth and simulate the HTTP calls that a user would do on your web page. Cheers! :-) Syced (talk) 09:07, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Possible improvement for Commons Video Converter[edit]

Login state[edit]

 • Also, the tool forgets I'm logged in and require re-OAuthentication quite often (apparently an hour or so?). This gets inconvenient when working on a large batch of videos. Especially since:
 • The tool does not seem to verify the login state when beginning an upload or a conversion. I.e. if my login expired but I still have the action buttons in front of me, the tool will let me sit through a whole upload, or tell me it's "converting", but in fact my upload won't be received, and my conversion won't be starting. I have already lost quite a bit of time on large uploads only to discover that I got logged out and would have to upload the whole thing again. Ijon (talk) 19:55, 1 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Short message to thank you a lot for the amazing & so useful tool you designed: [6].

I noticed a short bug that I met two times for the moment. Sometimes when converting from MOV to webm, there is a pb with the orientation of the video (180 degrees rotation would be needed). First pb is already fixed but I still have to manage the second one...as you can see [7]. A first "fix" could be a preview just after convert & before uploading to commons?

Anyway thanks again for your very good job.

Commons Video Convert[edit]

Hi. I have a question, just a doubt: some days ago I upload via Commons Video Convert a 171 MB video, that after conversion become a 1.77 GB file. It uploaded "as usual", and now the tools says it is already uploaded... but I can't see the video anywhere. ¿Is that an error or just happened that I can't find my own files? Thanks and congrats for such a wonderfull tool.--TaronjaSatsuma (talk) 10:30, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The file size depends on the quality level you choose. You shouldn't need to scale blow it up so much, you don't gain anything from it. What is the file name? Is there an identical filename already on Commons? Does it have any special characters that might mess upp somewhere in my tool? --Prolineserver (talk) 10:44, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Then maybe I should reupload it, with a more sensible weight. The filename should be "Falla Malvarrosa infantil 2017 (Miguel Hache)" or "Miguel Hache 2017".--TaronjaSatsuma (talk) 10:51, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Files as large as 1.77 GB have a very large chance of failing, see phab:T128358 --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 10:46, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Showing the status of conversion.[edit]

I recently uploaded an 450Mb .mpg video which converted brilliantly to a much smaller WebM format (85Mb)- I was very impressed, not having used the wmflabs VideoConvert tool before. The video will be projected to an audience at a Wikipedia conference in Canada next month, so I then tried uploading a higher resolution version, albeit with a new name (size 1.4Gb).

I wanted to report that, as a user, I found it impossible to tell what was happening once the 'convert' button is activated. The first time I only knew it had successfully converted the file by refreshing the page, as instructed in Note #1, and seeing the new file information.

However, with my second upload I must have refreshed the page too soon. This resulted in the loss of the uploaded file, so had to go through the 2hr+ upload a second time. I dare not turn my browser off or refresh it now, yet the only way to see the conversion status is to do just that. So, this is a bit Catch-22, and I wondered if there might be a more effective way to inform users of the status of file conversion without them having to refresh their browser and risk losing it all? Regards from the UK, Nick Moyes (talk) 09:56, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

After pushing the convert button, the file is send to a job manager on an arbitrary server and I have no control over it. If this happens, the file was lost *before* conversion. Actually, it is not lost but your cookie/session is messed up and it is uploaded without username and ends up in the wrong folder. If you let me know the exact file name I can probably find it and move it to the correct place. --Prolineserver (talk) 08:39, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for this explanation. It wasn't the particular file I was worried about - I was just wanting to identify an issue from the perspective of a user who simply didn't know what was going on, or when the convert process was finshed. Was there anything I either did, or shouldn't have done which might have caused that session mix up? For example, is it OK to login in from a second computer to see whether the file has converted, or does that make it worse? Not having even a rough idea how long processing (circa X minutes per 100Mb) means I didn't dare touch my computer for the next few hours, lest something got messed up. I guess what I'm trying to ask is whether the instructions could be clearer on advising whether or not it's OK to refresh the Commons Video Convert page or even logoff once the conversion step is in process? Maybe I was just unlucky with this glitch, and the instructions are fine for every other occasion. Regards from the UK. Nick Moyes (talk) 11:04, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The upload phase in Asian, American and European countries without juries ends on December 15th. In Africa two weeks later.
Here you can find more details.

This is a manually inserted message for commons users with knowledge who are also globally active or who have uploaded images related to the competition's themes (science buildings, microscopic images, scientists, wildlife...).

Thanks for uploading File:Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences-Högtidssammankomst 2011-03-31 by Markus Marcetic gg03.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences-Högtidssammankomst 2011-03-31 by Markus Marcetic gg03.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

File:Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences-Högtidssammankomst 2011-03-31 by Markus Marcetic gg03.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Commons bot inactivity[edit]

Hello!

Your bot has been listed at Commons:Bots/Requests/de-flag 5 as being inactive for over two years. As a housekeeping measure we'd like to remove the bot flag from inactive bot accounts, unless you expect the bot will be operated again in the near future. If you wish for your bot to retain it's bot flag, please speak up on the deflag page. If you consent to the removal of the bot flag (or do not reply on the deflag page) you can re-request the bot flag at Commons:Bots/Requests should you need it again. Videoconvert feature request : warn before overwriting[edit]

Hi,

I just used Videoconvert to upload a video. What I didn't know is that there was a video with the exact same name already uploaded, and videoconvert silently overwrote it. It would be nice if the tool checked that the uploaded file doesn't already exist and asked for confirmation before overwriting an existing file.

Thanks for making this tool. --Rinaku (t · c) 15:16, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Expiry of GWToolset user group memberships[edit]

There is a proposal on the Bureaucrat's noticeboard to automatically expire GWT memberships after one year unless the user requests an extension. Please add your views and suggestions to the discussion. The reasonably informal process for getting access to GWT access will remain as is.

Sent by MediaWiki message delivery (talk) on behalf of Revi. 15:42, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Per the proposal mentioned above your access to the GW toolset has been removed. Please feel free to request back at any time via the Bureaucrats' noticeboard. --Krd 08:00, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Videoconvert removal of audio[edit]

Hi Prolineserver. I'm trying to remove the audio from File:Centrul_Istoric_al_Municipiului_Codlea_-_Biserica_Evanghelică_Fortificată_și_Muzeul_Tradițiilor.webm in order to have it recovered. However, the conversion command here seems to be a simple copy. Is audio removal available from webm files?--Strainu (talk) 11:11, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nachholtermin 17. Fotoworkshop[edit]

Tschüß
Euer

Is Commons Video Convert uploading?[edit]

I have something that I have sent to the wmflabs.org server (100% uploaded there) but I don't have any idea if it's actually being ported to Commons. Can I check on this? Do you have any idea? Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 00:30, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

/Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 15:32, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Vinnarbilden i Wiki Loves Earth!

Hej!

(For information in English, see Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in Sweden or other participating countries.)

Is Commons Video Convert still supported?[edit]

If so could you possibly put a link to show where to report problems as now it says

"This tool is operated by User:Prolineserver. The tool is constantly developed, so please report bugs, feature requests etc."

but does not say where to report. I hope you have other people to help you so presumably this user talk is not the best place?

I am trying to convert a 2 second .mov file and it has been stuck on "....converting" for about half an hour now.

If you are no longer able to maintain the tool could you possibly write on the "notes" "This tool is no longer maintained"

Thanks for your hard work on the tool in the past Chidgk1 (talk) 08:09, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Videoconvert tool - Internal server error[edit]

Hi @Prolineserver, I tried using the videoconvert tool to upload a video on Commons twice but got the internal server error, every time around 2% upload. Any idea what might be the problem? Is there a minimum number of edits an editor should have before uploading videos via the tool? -- Satdeep-test (talk) 01:49, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
