First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hi. sorry, but I my horrible english can't make explane me good. I want say if was possible put the text of the two little tag in the other tag, and delete they. But if you want charge road signal image, please, check if aren't redundant of images in this category. About lenguages, I think that is better have first english and later the other lenguages, but imho. --RED DEVIL 666 09:02, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tags[edit]

Ok, if you must upload hundreds images is ok. I say this only because on Commons there are a lots of tags only for 1 or 2 images. --RED DEVIL 666 08:44, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to vote for me in my recent request for adminship. It ended with a final score of (8/10) and hece failed to reach concensus. I value all of the contributions made during the process and I will take a special note of the constructive criticism regarding interacting with users in the user talk space. If you have questions, or requests, please leave a message. --Cool CatTalk|@ 12:50, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PD-JORF[edit]

JORF is the official gazette publishing the authoritative version of laws, regulations and some other decisions from the national government. These decisions are opposable to citizens. It is a general principle of French law that the republishing of decisions opposable to citizens (laws, regulations, court decisions) cannot be prevented by copyright.

The official site of the French government for publishing law online says:

DROIT d'AUTEUR

That is:

COPYRIGHT
First, some of the data on this site is copyrighted (article L111-1 of the code of intellectual property). The copyrighted data is, essentially, the translations into foreign languages of codes; abstract and summaries describing laws and regulations, or court decisions; and the classifications used on this site.

Note that they mention that summaries of texts, as well as translations of texts, are copyrighted, but not the authoritative version of the texts. David.Monniaux 18:17, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I may also add that this thing about legal texts (laws, regulations, court decisions and other decisions) not being protected by copyright does not extend to other publications of the French government. The general rules for reuse of French government publications are laid in the law of July 17, 1978 and the decree of December 30, 2005.

Note also that databases of legal texts might be protected by the sui generis right on database as defined in Title 4 of the code of intellectual property. Note, however, that this only covers substantial copies of the databases, which means that a few disorganized pages out of it are not covered.

If you wish to discuss this further, as I have done, I suggest you to ask Villy (who is a chief justice) and Soufron (who is an attorney-at-law and also the chief legal officer of the Wikimedia Foundation). Beware: the legal status of government works is a very complex legal issue, probably requiring knowledge of French and French law to be understood. There exist entire books on the topic (there's one by Maurice Ronai from 1996, alas outdated) and many situations are in a legal gray area (because untested in court). I strongly recommend against drawing any kind of legal conclusion without some (fairly tedious) study of the issues. David.Monniaux 00:00, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The external links work provided that you fill the template's parameters. David.Monniaux 17:44, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

template China and Macao[edit]

Hi. please change the text of your tag, because are very long. Put the laws in talk page, put a link in the template, to talk page, and put in the tag a little explicative text. A big tag isn't easy to use for an user with a little definition of screen, like 800x600. Sorry for this problem. Bye --RED DEVIL 666 12:54, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

for PD-chile I was working on, but isn't a big problem make more small the tags. This is better, and if you can do it for chinese tags is good. My opinion for Maco's tag is put all text in talk page, and put a little text in english (with a link to talk page) in the template. Sorry for my sucks english, and if I could not say good. --RED DEVIL 666 07:44, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I modified Macao template to make it more little. See it. --RED DEVIL 666 15:26, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The text in english is more usable than the text in chinese and in Portugues. the rest of text is in talk page. --RED DEVIL 666 15:23, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of an audio file[edit]

Hi Jusjih,

I was wondering if you would delete Image:Pride and Prejudice, chapter 44.ogg for me. I think there was something wrong during the upload, and apparently there is no file by that actual name (I can't stream the audio file that I uploaded). I've added {{Speedy}} to the page, but I doubt it will be deleted any time soon if I just wait. I think if you delete it, I can upload it again and it will actually work this time. I'm using it to complement a work over on Wikisource, and I'd like to get this project finished in a timely manner.

Thanks for your help.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 17:16, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, please do not delete this file. It works properly now. I had to have the database purge itself. Thanks anyway.68.188.111.123 14:03, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Varttina Photo[edit]

Dear Jusjih,

I noticed you deleted the Varttina photo I submitted stating it's been simply copied from the band's website. As you must be much more familiar with how Wikipedia works, maybe you could explain me how to submit the photo in the right way.

First of all, your assumption about the photos origin was wrong. Even if the same photo can be found on Varttina's web page doesn't mean it was copied from there. You see, I work as the band's manager and I was the one who put it in www.varttina.com in the first place. The copyright for the picture is owned by the band and me as their representer. The photo have been bought from the photographer Tuomo Manninen, who only wishes he is attributed for his work.

As I am new to Wikipedia and this whole photo/copyright thing seems to be very complicated and sensitive area, I'd like to know how I can submit the image so that it stays there for sure? After all, we all like to have images on these pages, don't we?

Thank you very much for your help.

Commons-l subscription[edit]

Hello Jusjih,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 23:06, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Translation request for Swift[edit]

Hi Jusjih. Pfctdayelise suggested that I ask you to translate comments I made on Commons:Village_pump#User:Shizhao [1][2]. I would greatly appreciate it hope you will let me know if you can. --Swift 18:45, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Done for both.--Jusjih 17:11, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a bunch Jusjih!
What did you think of the Template:Translation? I was thinking of adding a parameter for the translator (would be placed in a little box in the lower right or something).
Is there a current system for organising translation work? I started thinking about how best to do this after I was told to seek a translator for my comments. Though direct, it seems a little cumbersome to me if everyone has to ask a specific translator to translate their work. Also, the best translators might get bombarded with requests taking their time from other tasks they are good at and/or introducing delays into discussions. Might it be useful to have a template (something like "translation request") which would take languages as a parameter and add the page into a category (say "Tranlsation requests|<lang-from> <lang-to>") which translators could monitor minimising the lag time. Comments? --Swift 17:40, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Your new template identifies translated text. Translation requests should be limited to very important concerns at an easily located project page. Commons:List of administrators by language shows multiple admins with at least intermediate Chinese skills, so a specific translation request page should be better than asking each admin. Standard language but not homophone abbreviations should be written for easier translation, such as "to you" and "for you", not "2 u" or "4 u" that may be considered strange and mysterious to non-native speakers. Furthermore, homophone abbreviations are NOT friendly to machine translators.--Jusjih 18:42, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Your new template identifies translated text. Yes, I noticed ;-). Did you think it was a good idea or just a waste of time?
specific translation request page should be better than asking each admin I've put up a proposal to (re-)start one at Commons:Requests for translation and will post a request for comments at the Village pump shortly.
Standard language but not homophone abbreviations... I take it these are suggestions for potential guidelines? Thanks I'll keep that in mind. Perhaps you could watch the RfT page and comment on these matters if the community looks kindly upon this?
Oh, and is there any chance you could do some more translating? [3] I'd also really like to see David Levy's comments translated, but it's a fairly long comment. --Swift 04:53, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately the comments are too long to translate in a short time for me, so I am referring Shizhao machine translators, even though not perfect, in case he cannot readily understand others' English and no one is readily available to translate.--Jusjih 04:13, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for the translations you have thus made. Greatly appreciated! --Swift 04:51, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More and more and more.[edit]

Dear Jusjih,

I just mean that it would be nice if you keep an eye on Commons more that it may be thought out of looking at your contributions. It doesn't mean that I suppose that you are not sufficiently active here: watching the Commons Recent changes page and your User discussion page doesn't cause any tracks in the User contributions page. No special actions are expected from your side by me. It's just a humble request to you to keep your eye on Commons; no any signs of this are required - I of course trust you. Dr Bug (Vladimir V. Medeyko) 08:58, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since there are so many new uploads here, looking at the recent changes may slow down the server like other heavily used Wiki sites, but I will randomly look around anyway.--Jusjih 09:57, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Due Sicilie - 12 carlini 1810.jpg[edit]

Since no one responded to Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Due Sicilie - 12 carlini 1810.jpg after 25 September 2006, I have deleted it. Thankfully a developer has enabled undeleting images and if you have a good reason to believe it PD-old, please go to Commons:Undeletion requests to appeal. Since I administer eight Wiki sites, including this Commons and English Wikipedia with too many problem images, I am too busy to try saving tagged problem images that might otherwise be eligible to stay.--Jusjih 15:09, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: I cannot convert images to SVG[edit]

Hi! yea, thats fine! I'm just tagging them so somebody else can do it (or me,...) If that is okay with you?! Amada44

Okay. You may leave these tags there, but I have to know which ones you have converted since they are used at least at Chinese Wikisource. Since these Taiwanese sign images are from a PDF in Chinese only, perhaps you can convert only after I upload the images while you do not understand Chinese language.--Jusjih 13:08, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Again! so, I did one as an example: {{border|}} that became: . I have added the -SupersededSVG- tag to the PNG file. But it is a hell of allot of work to change them all into SVG. I wont do that by myself. And just another pile of work to change it at the Chinese Wikisource!!! Amada44 16:10, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
How many SVGs have you made? While the new SVG that you show me is clearer, I cannot do it myself, so unless you know someone willing to convert, please have him/her contact me. Otherwise, tagging convertions to SVG is NOT okay to me while I still have hundreds of images to upload. You cannot read Chinese and I cannot upload SVGs mean that for now, I can only continue uploading PNGs or wait until my computer is capable of supporting SVGs. That will not happen within three months.--Jusjih 13:54, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I have done only one until now. But of course it will be quicker now, that I have done the first example. but I will not do to many in the next time mainly because I dont have regular internet access. There is no clear consense about tagging svg in wikimedia. I thought, that all images which would be better in svg should be tagged and when people find time, converted. But I wont tag you images and please upload the rest in PNG!! Amada44 09:45, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hello there! The thing is, that to make svg's properly you will need either Illustrator or Inkscape and then one has to re-build each sign in one of those programs and that is a huge amount of work!!! I wouldn't wait with uploading. Do the work you have planed to do! Except: I looked at the pdf you linked with the roadsigns and the are embedded as bitmaps into the pdf. If the images are embedded vector images then you can open the pdf in illustrator and save the file as svg. But otherwise, upload svg! Amada44 23:29, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! No, Illustrator and Inkscape are both programs (Inkscape is free: http://www.inkscape.org/) to create and edit svg! Download Inkscape and have a look at it. It is Opensource! Amada44 11:28, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have deleted them in good faith because:
  1. The original sources have CC-BY-NC-ND 2.0 licenses, imcompactible here.
  2. The extra permission limit the heights and widths.
  3. You have not talked at Commons:Deletion requests/Berlinare Flickr photos by Howie Berlin and no one else argues for their retentions or replacements for long time.
  4. Thanks to a developer, deleted images may now be undeleted.
I just found that alternate photos are available at [6], but no one else placed the photos here. I can undelete the photos with thier page history in one condition, i.e. the photos have to be reuploaded with CC-BY-SA 2.0 to replace those with CC-BY-NC-ND 2.0. Instead of further deletions, I will try to replace these photos and restore local images. If you want to undelete, please replace the licensing information as well.--Jusjih 13:45, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  1. There was an extra permission
  2. The limitation of the extra permission doesn't matter. A license is only valid for one specific file.
  3. I haven't talked at the deletion request, because I didn't know about it. The person who requested the deletion did not take the time to insert a deletion request into each picture, that means that the CommonsTicker, didn't notify us :( Maybe we should optimize the Ticker ....
  4. I know. That's what I did!
Replacing the images sounds like a good idea. I don't have the bandwith to help you, I'm sorry. I'm only on ISDN and all my time is currently consumed by the nld-pictures at de.wp Thanks, --Flominator 14:25, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I manually delinked images in question. I will first re-upload images and then go back to my contributions at various Wiki sites to relink images. This is not my first time experiencing major copyright turmoil as a Wiki site admin. I have seen this at English Wikisource involving the United Nations resolutions. Be glad that someone can prove them in the public domain, so they have been undeleted.--Jusjih 14:29, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your motivation! --Flominator 19:45, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Jusjih, thank you for your message. The picture is supposed to be on English Wikipedia licensed as Fair Use Building. I don't know what's going on here. Hope you can help, 163.1.230.122 17:04, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

So, thank you and thanks to all who trust on me. I'll try to do better than I could. Bye! Kordas 19:37, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The link you added in this diff does not work for me. I only found [7] but it's in Chinese only - 对我来说很难理解 - 有英文的話,比較容易...--Matt314 17:34, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note that Article 55 in the 1990 law is Article 59 in the current (2001) amended law -- I don't think there is a need for a separate link there; just change the article number and list it with the other articles. Carl Lindberg 04:44, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rule of the shorter term[edit]

In your rule of the shorter term petition, note that the U.S. essentially used the rule of the shorter term when deciding which works to restore -- only works which were still copyrighted in their country of origin in 1996 were eligible. So, the problem is only for works that have expired in their country of origin since then -- a problem that was small but is growing, putting U.S. citizens/corporations at a disadvantage because European users can use U.S. material if it has expired according to their rules (even if still copyrighted in the U.S.) while U.S. users cannot do the same in the reverse situation. That may be a more effective way of putting it; not sure. Just throwing the thought out there ;-) Carl Lindberg 04:56, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

I think that it would be better to protect this template. Thanks, --Bangin@de@ku ¤ ρø$τ 14:01, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is already semi-protected from being edited by IPs and newbies and fully protected from being moved by non-admins. Would you please explain why it should be fully protected? While Commons:Protected page allows you to ask any admin, you should ask at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks & protections to get more admins' attention. I am currently using Wikisource more often, so I cannot always respond.--Jusjih 17:36, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, thanks a lot for taking a look at my admin nomination and noticing the issue with the e-mail. It should be taken care of now, if you'd like to reconsider your vote. Thanks a lot. Dcoetzee 22:21, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

CJK stroke order project need help to finish a translation[edit]

Hello Jusjih,

I come here to ask your help in translating the end of Commons:中日韩汉字笔顺计划 from English into simplified Chinese. This project already provided 1500 images, but there is many characters missing. This translation will help us to have some chinese graphists. --Yug (talk) 11:13, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Kukryniksy-razgromim.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
