Hello, Jeanne boleyn~commonswiki!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:LA_Girl_1974.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi Jeanne boleyn,
your recent change in the source entry of this image doesn't really help. You entered a license, but not the source. The question to answer is, where did you get this image from, as you surely didn't make it by yourself. --Túrelio (talk) 15:13, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's my grandmother. I scanned it onto my computer--Jeanne boleyn (talk) 15:14, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, well then you have to decide if you want to disclose that information. In case yes, then you might write under source: Family photo from 19xx (if you know it), scanned by myself.
In addition there remains the question, who is the photographer, because he/she is the (main) author, not you. If the photographer is a family member still living, you should ask him/her out of courtesy. If the photographer is not a family member, you have to ask him for permission, or, if already dead, check whether he/she's dead for at least 70 years. Only after that, the copyright vanishes. You don't become author by scanning a photo if it wasn't originally taken by yourself. --Túrelio (talk) 15:20, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The photo was taken in 1919. I imagine the photographer is dead by now.--Jeanne boleyn (talk) 15:25, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Not dead by now, but dead for >70 years, in case it's not family member. --Túrelio (talk) 15:30, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How would I know the exact year the photographer died. The photo was taken in a studio in Dallas in 1919?--Jeanne boleyn (talk) 15:32, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
O.k. then it's at least clear, that the photographer was not a family member. Isn't the name of the photographer written on the backside or near the border of the frontside? You could then try a quick internet search whether the studio still exists and, if yes, if there is any information about that photographer. Or, if there is no individual name, you might ask the studio by email if they had any objections.
I would suggest you to follow that path in all cases where the photographer (if not clearly a family member) might have died less that 70 years ago, i.e. after 1938. --Túrelio (talk) 15:37, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The photographer was a friend of the family, my mother told me that, and had a studio in Dallas, but the name isn't written on the photo.--Jeanne boleyn (talk) 15:46, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
O.k., then write friend of the family under author. --Túrelio (talk) 15:59, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there. I have "cleaned up" a little the image pages, sorting the info you had added. Feel free to ask if you don't understand what I have done or if you think I've made a mistake. Also, please avoid removing the "problem tags" by yourself (unless you want to transform it into a deletion request in order to trigger a wider debate), they will be removed when the file is reviewed again, if the problem is solved. Túrelio, sorry that you had to clean after me, I had to leave, so thank you for that! Regards, --Eusebius (talk) 16:54, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request (rfd) for family images and/or out of scope[edit]

Jeanne,
in the rfd where you've left already a comment, Eusebius has done a careful subdivision/grouping of images by topic and/or problems. Most of the images are likely to be deleted as being out of scope. If among those listed in this rfd are single ones where you could/want to show a reasonable educational value, please do so now.
With all images in the "dancing" group and some others, there remains the problem of personality rights. I assume that most of them show your own children. However, as they seem to be in or out of their teens, please make sure, they do agree with being "published" here. Portrait images of other identifiable children, may stay here only with a model release or clear consent of the depicted or their parents. --Túrelio (talk) 21:34, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Sicilian photos are of educational value, as they are show authentic period costumes worn by performers in the traditional Sicilian presepe vivente, in English animated crib. Many cities, towns and villages put on a presepe vivente at Christmas time. Ours, is one of the most famous in Sicily, and has even been televised by Italy's RAI Uno. Others such as
File:Tourist at Giardini Naxos.jpg
Girl on a boat at the resort of Giadini Naxos with a view of Taormina in the background
is my daughter taken with Taormina in the bckground. I took it on purpose last summer for Wikipedia Commons to show Giardini Naxos and Taormina. The others which have educational value are those which reflect the fashions of the period, such as the images on the right
File:Family picture 1965.jpg
These show the clothes worn in 1965, especially the shift dresses
,
Glam rock girl of Venice, California wearing the clothing and make-up typical of that period
,
File:Italian teenager.jpg
Italian boy in 2008, dressed as a chav, with baseball cap, unglasses, and gold chain
, Image:Glam rock style 1974, and a few others. These serve to illustrate the clothes worn in that particular year. I am sure that you have noticed there are very few photos of 1960s and 1970s fashion available in Commons. I have sought to remedy that lack by adding some of my personal photos. The Omagh photos were taken close to the site of the Omagh bomb in 1998, which is why I added them. As for the photos of the dancing children, the girl in the forefront is my daughter, so obviously I freely give my consent, however, as I do not personally know the other children, I cannot obtain consent, so perhaps those particular images should be deleted. Anyway, if you decide to delete my picturs, I will not be offended, however, I do feel that that ones I have named here do have merit. Thank you --Jeanne boleyn (talk) 06:18, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

thank you...[edit]

...for small language lesson. People have to learn all the life; as you can read on my personal page I declare an intermediate level of English only. If my poor English is difficult for you, we can change, and continue discuss in Polish, if you want.

  • You did not have to teach me about the history of digital photography, because I am sure you are near exactly so old as I am.
  • I did not fill WikiCommons with more than sixty pictures of myself or of my children, as you did. Your contribution in Commons is just only ca. hundred images uploaded, and more than half are from your family album, IMHO unusual for encyclopedic purposes. My contribution is about 2600 pictures and almost all of them are (or were) in use somewhere in Wikipedias to illustrate articles.
  • Another problem is, I am sure, that the "Public Domain - own work" license is inadequate for the pictures of yourself. You can not be your own photographer of yourself, as File:1998 woman in black.jpg (ignoring self-timer or mirror - both unrealistic in this example). There are many other pictures marked as "your" works, but obvious not your works.
  • IMHO it would be much better you share on pictures rather like File:Mount Etna snow-toppd.jpg than File:Tatiana in black top.jpg, which is not usable even as fashion-categorized photo.
  • People have always right to express their opinion; my opinion is we should delete these pictures.

Regards Julo (talk) 17:03, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if I was rude. Your English is far better than most native speakers. And I don't know one word of Polish, so you have one up on me. About the photos of myself, they were taken by either friends or family members, so who is the author? The person who took it? Now this is the difficult part, where I must needs disagree with you on some of the photos. I'm glad you like that photo of Etna, today was a clear, perfect day to see it topped with snow. The Sicilian photos have educational value, as do some of the fashion photos. Julo, you must admit now that the fashion categories are rather empty of pictures, hence the articles at Wikipedia do suffer as a result. I am being made to feel like a criminal for having sent up the pictures when all I was doing was trying to help. Now I can see that I went over the top with too many pictures, however, some, (though obviously not ALL, do have value).--Jeanne boleyn (talk) 18:08, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

May I add the Images Italian girl 2013.JPG and File:Italian style 2013.JPG to the Category:Women's bodysuits?[edit]

I assume this is the case and also like it to replace the image Candice-Swanepoel 2010-03-31 VictoriasSecretStoreChicago photo-by-Adam Bielawski.jpg in the German and English article about bodysuits. I trust you can add it to the Italian version? Thank you.--Tobias "ToMar" Maier (talk) 12:26, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
