First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

For the sentence you wrote: "您好。对不起，我的网页不是有趣。去看我的网页在Wikipedia里。谢谢！ "
A more "native" way of expressing it would be:
"您好。对不起，我的网页不是很有趣。请看我在Wikipedia里的网页。谢谢！ " or

Vectorization possible[edit]

I noticed that you uploaded Image:Grguo.png. Could you plesae provide me with Chinese text that says the exact same thing as the image? With that, I ought to be able to create a good vector version of the image. —Remember the dot (talk) 03:32, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Gwoyu.png[edit]

Good job on Image:Gwoyu.png! I noticed a small error in the pinyin transcription guóyǔ; the 3rd tone mark above u should be a caron (i.e. sharp end), not a breve (i.e. rounded end). Could you please correct the error? Regards, Joshua Chiew 10:57, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your account will be renamed[edit]

Hello,

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Ikiroid. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Ikiroid~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
