Thanks for uploading File:Zemberek secenekler yazimyardimi.gif. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Aliased linguistic maps[edit]

Hi, I have no idea what aliasing has to do with linguistics. Could you please give better explanations in the category descriptions? --Enyavar (talk) 23:59, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Anti-aliased – Inelegant when modified, because of anti-aliasing techniques. Notice the jagged lines where the green was added.
Aliased – Every pixel is standalone, and there are fewer colors (only 9 or so). If it were art, it would be called pixel art.
Hi, Enyavar! Aliased maps are raster (non-vector) maps that were made with anti-aliasing disabled. This makes them easily editable by almost anyone with pixel-perfect precision. "Aliased linguistic maps" just means "linguistic maps that are aliased" or "aliased maps featuring linguistic subjects". In my opinion, these kinds of maps are of particular interest to language cartographers, because they offer an accessible, intuitive way for most people to update and correct maps of living languages. The learning curve for SVG files is unfortunately too steep for most people, and beginners often produce bloated files that have to be subsequently recreated. I hope this clarifies why PNG files — non-antialiased (aka aliased) ones in particular — can be particularly useful. --Iketsi (talk) 00:31, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the explanation!
The issue I have here is that you are mixing two kinds of categories: The displayed content and the file format. By creating these particular categories, you are fragmenting for example "Linguistic world maps" into "Aliased..." and "Non aliased..." linguistic world maps, which then would be subdivided again by language families, continents, etc. This kind of duplication of category trees is already a huge headache with "SVG maps of whatever" vs. the same "Raster maps of whatever". Distinguishing between one and the other creates the necessity to re-create each map-category tree in duplicate: One for the single "SVG map of the 2015 city council elections in Nantes" and another category for the single "Map of the 2015 city council election in Nantes": different categories despite displaying the same content.
The more different sub-categories are created, the less obvious it becomes what belongs into which, and what map creators should categorize in which manner. Category:Linguistic maps of the Polish language has currently subcategories for "SVG", "Aliased" and "Language neutral". I see multiple "Language neutral" files that seem to also be "aliased", but are not categorized as such? Yes, it is possible to create "Aliased language neutral linguistic maps of the Polish language", but that means to effectively hide three files in the fifth drawer inside a broom closet. People will not look there.
I am of the opinion that it should suffice to have "Aliased lingustic maps"/"SVG linguistic maps" as one big collection category for the file format. Yes, break that one down by some criterion (e.g. the displayed continent) when multiple hundred files make the category too large, but please don't mix the format with the content unless necessary. Your target group are the few people who wish to modify existing aliased basemaps, after all, they can switch any "Aliased ... map of Asia" from Tibetan to Vietnamese language.
That allows to show and browse for all "Linguistic maps of X-Language" in another single category. In my experience, most users don't care if a map is vectorized, aliased, tri-colored, patterned or none of these - they are interested in what the map shows, and so it's better to find "File:aliased_bicolor_animation_2012.gif" at the same spot as "File:non-aliased_greyscale_scan_1985.jpeg" to easily compare them. Of course, also potentially break that single category down by some content-based criterion (e.g. dialect subgroups, map type) when it becomes too large.
All the best, --Enyavar (talk) 03:34, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop moving things around without discussion[edit]

Please stop moving things around without discussion; it makes it impossible to find the stuff we use. It's especially annoying when you're giving a presentation and trying to show people stuff during it, but you cannot because the category has all of a sudden disappeared without any forewarning. - Yupik (talk) 12:20, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yupik, sorry for chiming in uninvited: What is this about? You do not mention what was moved that prevented you from holding a presentation.
One section above, I'm also not much satisfied with the movements of many linguistic map categories, but that seems to have happened several weeks ago and as far as I see this did not completely disappear the previous category structure.
On the other hand, I am also heavily engaging in recategorizations (creating new categories, moving files around a lot). I believe most of my actions are pretty uncontroversial, but one could challenge me just as well for not discussing each case for weeks on end. --Enyavar (talk) 17:56, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category naming consistence[edit]

Hi Iketsi, I'm pretty confused by a series of categories you moved (Italian-language SVG diagrams, Japanese-language SVG diagrams, etc.), because it is standard here to name the file format at the beginning (so the consistent naming convention would be: SVG Italian-language diagrams, SVG Japanese-language diagrams, etc.). Is there a specific reason to ignore the naming convention here? Has there been a discussion about this change? Thanks, Daniele Fisichella 13:07, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daniele. Good question. Language-based categories were a giant mess before I started renaming them according to a consistent naming convention (language first, like Wikipedia itself). I can't find the discussion, but we came to an agreement a few years ago that it would be in the interest of uniformity to prepend the language before other elements in category names. Whether SVG categories specifically should be treated differently is separate issue, which I would raise once the category names are uniform across languages. Either way, having more redirects will make these categories easier to find using Cat-a-lot. Iketsi (talk) 13:38, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please reverse the creation of Category:Market charts and diagrams[edit]

There is a clear distinction between charts and diagrams:

  • Charts are about the real world, they reflect statistics, real figures about what has happened, for instance development of national income and prices.
  • Diagrams are about theories, they usually reflect models, showing how (in this case) the economy works.

And there is the Selectivity principle that says that multi-subject categories (like this new one) should be avoided.
So please reverse this change (and any other changes like this), and ask for a speedy deletion of this new category. JopkeB (talk) 05:52, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Texte trop long en légende[edit]

Bonjour,

-- Titlutin (talk) 09:30, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bonne soirée --Titlutin (talk) 20:38, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality naming in categories[edit]

Hi Iketsi, hope you are doing well. I am doing a study on categorization in Commons and cannot find on the Help page the discussion related to the criteria followed to turn, for one, category "Basque" into "People of the Basque Country" and ("People of the Basque Autonomous Community"). I found you moved the category Basque people, turned into Category:People of the Basque Country. I would appreciate if you could pinpoint where that discussion is. Kind regards Iñaki LL (talk) 12:24, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Iñaki, it's good to hear from you. To answer your question, I'm not sure there was one. It is possible that I simply merged Basque people and People of the Basque Country because the vast majority of (sub)categories on Commons follow the "people of XYZ" scheme. However, I understand that in some cases there is a difference between nationality (being Basque) and place of origin (being from the Basque Country). Did you have a change in mind? Best, Iketsi (talk) 12:58, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the delay and thanks for your reply, Iketsi. I see there were some changes in the naming of nations and peoples, replaced instead by country names. It is not my intention to open a can of worms, but yes, you are right, there is a difference. Additionally, past characters have come to be categorized according to present-day administrative realities, like the one I point above, which often does not actually tie in with the reality of the period. I think there was a discussion on that, wasn't there? Any clues on this? Kind regards @Iketsi Iñaki LL (talk) 21:59, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

language orders[edit]

Hello, you added the hint text in the template c:Template:Edit other versions (c:special:diff/781083938/804381500) - you refer to c:Module:Multilingual description/sort - I'm absolutely not clear on what I should do - is it about the order of languages in the respective other-versions template or about potentially missing languages for the module you refer to? Is there a script to execute? Should one know from the module's code how the languages should be sorted for an other-versions template? I would like to do it correctly, but the hint you provided is too vague. --Mrmw (talk) 20:35, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
