flickr pics[edit]

Hi Holt! The photos you recently uploaded from flickr are awesome. Good choice! One small request though - when uploading images from flickr, could you please choose the highest resolution available? On the flickr image page, just above the image on the left, there is a little all sizes button that when clicked will show you all the sizes available. Just choose the largest one available that has a free license! Thanks so much! Brynn (talk!) 16:31, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No prob. It's easy enough to miss the highest res file. It was just a few of the runestone pics and I've gone ahead and uploaded the higher res files when I was doing the flickr review.  :) Brynn (talk!) 16:44, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pending permission for Image:Kinneve stone (Vg 134).jpg[edit]

Hello. On the image titled Image:Kinneve stone (Vg 134).jpg, you added the Otrs pending template. Unfortunately, after conducting a search, I could not locate the ticket containing the permission to use the image. Please respond on my talk page if you have the ticket number, or if you would like to send me the permission. Please note that if you do not respond, the image may be deleted. Thanks! Great sorting![edit]

It's much more fun to browse this stuff now. Haukurth (talk) 20:01, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, that's good to hear. When I get to know the saga material better, I'll try sorting that bunch too, and put it under "Norse history and culture". Holt (talk) 10:43, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of things[edit]

If I recall correctly the reason we didn't originally upload Willy Pogany's stuff to Commons was doubt about the source country. If the illustrations were originally published outside the US then they'd fall foul of a Commons technicality. I don't know if they were (and this wouldn't affect their copyright status in either the US or the EEA and, for the record, I don't really think Commons policy makes sense here).

When using images from the Internet Archive it's best to download some of the high quality versions - jp2 (IrfanView is a good viewer/converted for those) or jpg or something like that. Of course, this can be impractical if running on low bandwidth or with other technical limitations. Haukurth (talk) 16:54, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see. I am sorry for not considering that. I only saw "New York: The Macmillan Company" and went straight ahead. These Commons policies are slightly confusing. There are more great Pogany illustrations out there that I'd like to upload, but I guess I'll have to do that on Wikipedia. About the jp2 files, I have noticed that you've uploaded that kind, but I have not found out where to download them. Where do I download these, instead of the regular pdf files? Holt (talk) 17:14, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't object to more Pogany - just saying that we might need to move that back to enwiki if certain information comes to light. As for downloading high-res versions click on the "All files: HTTP" link and select one of the big files. Unfortunately there isn't a way to download high-res files on a file-by-file basis so you need to grab the whole bunch.[1] Haukurth (talk) 09:29, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Holt!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Oseberg tapestry II.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
