Gruss, --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:02, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
@Jivee Blau: Danke Dir! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:00, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
--Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:02, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
Welche Ticketnummer stand in der gelöschten Datei? Gruß --Jivee Blau 04:04, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
m( Ticket:2019062910004502. Sorry. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:17, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
License review

Hello, I suggest it would be better to confirm first with Alexis Jazz their request to become license reviewer, since two admins including myself recently offered to endorse such candidature but the offer was declined (here and there), and to formally ask the community, following the procedure described at Commons:License review/requests. — Racconish💬 05:42, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Undeletion request

Hi, I see that you have deleted three video (VideoWiki) files today. They are File:Wikipedia-VideoWiki-A. R. Rahman.webm, File:Wikipedia-VideoWiki-Rajinikanth.webm, and File:Wikipedia-VideoWiki-Asha Bhosle.webm. All these files were developed through VideoWiki article. Due to some bug, no info was added to these files. But I did add source info to these files, but forgot to remove tag. So I kindly check the info again, and restore the files. @KCVelaga (VideoWiki): ✓ Done I added a few categories, please recheck and add/change as you see fit. File:1955-04-30 - Illustrated London News - Emesa helmet.jpg

This file was marked for speedy deletion on the 24th—inappropriately, I believe. I contested this, with an explanation in my edit. Why, then, was the file nonetheless deleted, let alone with no explanation, and let alone speedily? --Usernameunique (talk) 03:45, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

Please follow the instruction @ Com:Undelete. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:27, 26 October 2019 (UTC)
To clarify: in light of the explanation I gave for why the file is not under copyright, why was the file deleted, and why speedily? --Usernameunique (talk)
Because the file was tagged for speedy deletion (as a copyvio) it was deleted. That's how copyvios are handled on Commons. Someone should have changed the speedy tag, i.e. request a standard deletion. Again, -> Com:Undelete, please. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 07:06, 26 October 2019 (UTC)
If, say, someone were to tag all the images of 17th-century paintings for deletion (as copyvios), would you still delete them? I'm struggling to understand how you're claiming to have no discretion (or at least to have exercised none) in deleting files—any if "someone should have changed the speedy tag," as you say, why you deleted the file instead of doing so. --Usernameunique (talk) 17:55, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

HiW Bot added redundant category

Hi! At the files

HiW Bot recently added Category:Animated GIF files. This is ok for the file flagged "(*)", but not for the others, since they are in the subcategory Category:Mathematical animations (when flagged "(M)"), and Category:Animations of geometry (when flagged "(G)"). I guess, this is a problem with the Bot.

(Actually, all 6 images should be in Category:Animations of geometry, but this is a different issue.) Best regards - Jochen Burghardt (talk) 16:14, 23 November 2019 (UTC)

@Jochen Burghardt: Das stimmt schon so. LG, --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:56, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Purpose of HiW-Bot?

Just wondering why HiW-Bot is categorizing all animated GIFs as Category:Animated GIF files. This huge category (currently >30K files and increasing daily) might be of interest for a general survey (e.g., to see how many animated GIFs are in Commons) but, without meaningful sub-categorization (e.g., Category:Animated GIF files by subject), what other purpose does it serve? Lambtron (talk) 15:35, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

Why? The answer is not meant to be snotty: That's how the cookie crumbles on Commons. We sort the heck out of our files. Regarding subcats: The bot can't add subcategories without knowing what is depicted. That's pretty much impossible, in addition to all other problems, no AI, most files don't even have a proper description. It's not easy. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 06:25, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

Perhaps HiW-Bot could automatically categorize based on existing file categories? For example, File:Splay Tree Insertion.gif belongs to Category:Sort and Category:Splay trees, so the bot might do something like this:

The result of this would be a huge list of topics in Category:Animated GIF files, which is way more useful than a huge list of alphabetized filenames. Also, this would sort out animated GIF files within each topic it touches. Best regards, Lambtron (talk) 15:24, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

No bot needed for this, can be done faster by hand and cat-a-lot or VFC. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:46, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

Hello, can someone help? Is it possible to undelete this photo which was uploaded to Commons by me, but deleted 24. november by mistake, I believe. The file belongs to Danish photographer, Mr. Flemming Ege of Horsens, who has given his permission to publish under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International, Ticket#2019082910009129. A copy of his mail to Wikimedia with the permission is available here: https://dmd.dk/wiki_mail_flemming_ege.pdf Thank you very much Tjelly2 (talk) 02:36, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

@Tjelly2: I requested the ticket to be checked by an OTRS agent. The ticket hasn't been approved since October. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 06:32, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

Thank you, Hedwig! Then how do you suggest I do to undelete it? The photo has a license, a permission and a source: https://dmd.dk/wiki_mail_flemming_ege.pdf Best regards Tjelly2 (talk) 12:28, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

No need, as soon as the OTRS agent confirms the ticket, the file will be restored. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:55, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
@Tjelly2: Just checking in, everything OK or do you need assistance of any kind? --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:49, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
@Hedwig in Washington: Thanks for asking, Hedwig! Everything OK until now, I'm just a little worried about the warning from Ruthven on the file site and whether it means the file will be deleted again ... Tjelly2 (talk) 01:00, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
@Tjelly2: No need to ping me on my own talk page, it's automatic notification. Doesn't hurt, tho. Without processed/accepted OTRS ticket the file is still subject to deletion after some time. You can ask Ruthven to reset the timer. Cheers! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 07:39, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

-- sarang사랑 18:51, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

--Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 20:00, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
-- sarang사랑 06:55, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

-- sarang사랑 08:47, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

@Sarang: B-I-T ✓ Done AWB macht es ein wenig einfacher, leider keine Massenlöschungen möglich, zwei Klicks pro Vorlage. Pywikipediabot kann auch keine Vorlagen löschen. Egal, ging fix. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:50, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
-- sarang사랑 05:54, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
Ja genau. Gemeinschaftsprojekt: Wie Du mir, so ich Dir. ^_^ Oder so ähnlich. Passt schon alles.
C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 07:13, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
-- sarang사랑 09:32, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

HiW-Bot added Category:Animated GIF files to theese 911? files. This is wrong. They are non-animated. Could you please reverse this? The assistance might be required

Hallo Hedwig, wie geht's? I'm writing, because I might need a bit assistance. Julo, who happens to be an admin too, uploaded images from fotopolska.eu - correctly indicating their authors and source; however not providing any evidence that authors agreed for free licenses(and fotopolska.eu doesn't share under any free license by default). I reminded him about it politely, and I am still awaiting the anwser. I only kisted some of the images, as there is more of them, uploaded in 2019 and maybe earlier - all sharing the same flaw. However, I kind of anticipate problems, therefore I ask you kindly to overlook this issue. Thanks, Masur (talk) 13:25, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
