First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

flickr uploads[edit]

Hi Goodvac! I noticed your recent uploads from flickr - nice pics! One small request - would you please choose the highest resolution flickr photo available? I've gone to flickr and uploaded the highest res file available of the princess cruise ship already. Thank you! Brynn (talk!) 22:25, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to be a problem with Commons servers. The image is stored, but the download right now it's really slow. I'm sure it will be fixed in the next hours. And as Brynn said, please check if you upload the best resolution available. In Image:Carnival Liberty-sun deck.jpg you uploaded the "large" version, instead of the "original" one. Cheers, KveD (talk) 19:09, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, one of them is OpenPhoto.net. ;) And there be others out there, but Flickr and OpenPhoto are the most popular. Cheers, KveD (talk) 19:23, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nor Photobucket, nor tinypic has free images. And you can see here some OpenPhoto images uploaded in Commons. Cheers, KveD (talk) 19:50, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Is this correct[edit]

Hello! Thank you for the note, it's always a pleasure to hear from someone asking questions and trying to do things the right way :D

First off, the way you credited the image was correct. However, I'm afraid the image would be classified as a copyvio; images on photobucket are either copyrighted to the person who uploaded them (in cases of family photos, travel photos, and so on) or, in the majority of cases, are copyright violations stolen from the web. Photobucket does not have a licensing system for those users who do upload their own work.

It is possible to ask the uploader to release their work under a free license, if you can contact them, but due to the large-scale copyright violations that go on at hosting sites like photobucket and tinypic, it is very VERY hard to trust that people actually do own copyright to the images. The best solution is to stick to flickr, where users can add licenses to their photographs which you can then search through. I'm not sure if you're aware, but if you choose "advanced search" there is an option at the bottom of the page where you can search only for CC-licensed images; if you check all three boxes the results will all be photographs with licenses compatible with the Commons. COM:FLICKR has some helpful information and tips that may prove useful :)

I hope that cleared the issue up some; do feel free to write again if you have further questions or comments! -- Editor at Largetalk 20:15, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, Editor at Large is right. Sorry for not leaving a note but I was busy. Hope this solves your question. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 20:19, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

TUSC token 9edef8d839614e9232142dba53a6f25c[edit]

I am now proud owner of a TUSC account!

File:Obama and Biden await updates on bin Laden.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
