Hello Anzee,

I was looking for an SVG blank map of Europe when I saw your picture. With the others wikigraphists of the Atelier Graphique – the French Graphic Lab, we have made a FAQ SVG (in french), where we list all the known problems between SVG and Wikipedia. The "Black Boxes Bug" is one of them ; I think it's the most frequently. I try to translate :

A black square is visible on the image:
Problem
Once an image is uploaded into the Commons, a black square is visible on the image (variant: it may also be coloured).
Sometimes it masks a word or a text.
This problem occurs on all Inkscape versions until 0.46 included.
Cause
The tag <svg:flowRoot...> is not understood by ImageMagick (which convert the SVG to PNG).
You have selected the Text tool, clicked on the image and drag your cursor to form a area in which you write.
This area causing black square.
Solution
You must first remove the text box. 
To do this, open the XML editor of Inkscape (Ctrl+Shift+X), and search for nodes <svg: flowRoot>...</flowroot>. Delete them.
Then you have two solutions:
* Go to edit mode text (F8), click where you want to position your sentence - but not drag the cursor - then write.
* You have another text, which it appears good. Select it, duplicate it (Ctrl + D), edit it (F8) and type the text.

"decreasing weight" : 740 Ko ··> 693 Ko. You can reduce more if you merge the boundaries (Ctrl+K)

It is another known problem. Only two fonts are correctly recognized : Arial and Times New Roman. I you want to show other fonts, you must transform your text to path (Ctrl+Alt+C). Sémhur 09:47, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear George Esayas,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Hello,

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called George Esayas. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name George Esayas~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
