Comments The dashed lines seem too heavy relative to the others. This is most troubling where they touch the trapezoid's lower right corner. Otherwise good IMO. --Avenue 13:43, 26 January 2012 (UTC) CommentPlease re-evaulate-I thinned the dashed lines--Gauravjuvekar 16:03, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. On second thought, some of the labels are poorly placed sorry - they should be near the centre of the relevant triangle or line. "2" is the worst, the upper "c" and perhaps the "3" could also be improved.--Avenue 02:11, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Yes, good now IMO. --Avenue 08:53, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

PostScript is very good for creating a new SVG file according to a mathematical specification, but it has very little to do with editing existing SVG files. I can try to edit the file if you want, but I can't do it any better than a lot of other people also could, and it will have nothing to do with PostScript... Hindi and Marathi translation requests

Thank you so much for doing the JAL123 English images!

By the way, if you are interested, I have some image translation requests in Hindi and Marathi.

1. Thanks for the tip!
2. Please translate the file descriptions. For instance File:Nariman-Point Bombay 2005.JPG, "Image of Nariman Point showing 1st famous Air India Building, 2nd Hotel Hilton Towers, in Bombay, India taken in year 2005 by Abhishek Madhani." should be in Hindi and Marathi, not just in English
Thank you

File:Spoiny_English.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Suppression de "School newspapers"

Bonjour, je tentais de créer une catégorie. Cordialement, prosopee (talk) 10:09, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

I noticed your upload of this file and I'm a bit puzzled. The description says "Removed 16 unused definitions". But curiously the file is larger as before. -- /人 ‿‿ 人\ 苦情処理係 18:07, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Because the file is saved as an inkscape specific version. I grabbed it form the inkscape specific version of 503 kb. I reverted it as it shows two warnings during validation. Perhaps you could remove the defs and still have it properly validated. My upload was infact 6kb lesser(comparing to 503kb version).--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 05:21, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

BTW, shouldn't a version to avoid librsvg bugs be PNG? JPEG should be used for photographs, not graphics.-Gauravjuvekar (talk) 05:23, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
Yes, no, Yes. ;-) All three formats have it's own advantages and disadvantages at Commons. The SVG is the best format for further changes and reuse, but it tends to be rendered with errors by librsvg. The PNG would be would be perfect for graphics to circumvent quality reduction. But this mainly applies to informative graphics. Otherwise you will get large files, have a size limit for thumbnails and the thumbs are blurry. The JPEG shows good quality thumbnails for articles, a good compression (bandwidth) and no real size limit for thumbnails, but it isn't perfect for reuse, since you loose quality with every change made. Thats why i had chosen SVG + JPG (at this time PNG support was even worse then now), while a PNG export could be made anytime. -- /人 ‿‿ 人\ 苦情処理係 08:19, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

I think this is quite natural in the obelisk posture. He will be fully under exposed if I metered on the twig. BTW, I appreciate your excellent reviews after checking all the details. Regards, -- Jkadavoor (talk) 08:40, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Here also, owlflies are active in nights; rest under the sun on day time to grab the heat.

I'm sorry, the twig was only one of the reasons. The overexposed(blown out) spot on its head(eye) and on its antennae, and the middle segments of its legs and the underside of its body(where the legs are attached) is also overexposed. Perhaps taking the shot from a different angle would have helped(My suggestion:rotating CW from the left along the horizontal plane(This may not have included its wings in the photo.))--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 10:07, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Agreed; I think you talked about the owlfly. But I thing only the twig is overexposed in case of the dragonfly: [1]. Just talking abut the difficulties in capturing such insects; no complaints about the opinions. Regards, -- Jkadavoor (talk) 10:20, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I talked about the owl fly. I appreciate the difficulties in taking such shots.--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 10:23, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Computer made

This images are renderings of a 3D model i create in Blender. Since it is a 3d model there is no easy way to convert it to an SVG and i have no way to upload the model itself since Commons does not accept a single format for 3D data. So the best possible option at the moment is to upload it as a lossless PNG image. -- /人 ‿‿ 人\ 苦情処理係 19:49, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello Gauravjuvekar, You don't need update umpteen Files. A DOCTYPE is not needed, it is not even recommended: [2][3] Greetings -- πϵρήλιο 12:15, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

My updates are not just of doctypes. I remove the metadata tag all together, I also add <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>. Along with that, I'm also clearing unnecessary stuff generated by inkscape.

Ok, but encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"? is also not needed, because encoding="UTF-8" is always the standard value. -- πϵρήλιο 20:36, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

The first dark sign, which you note, is the mirror part of the road sign on the right (which contains "Aachen / Eschweiler-West" an so on). It would be creepy, if it wouldn't be there ;-) Left side comes, right side goes. The second one, which lurks on the right side of the bigger sign out, is the "exit" sign (sorry, didn't found the correct english term for it), which marks the target of the highway exit - in combination with the three smaller, rectangular signs on the middle of the picture (everyone stands for 100m distance to exit). I'm not a friend of killing elements (i like those details, personaly) which are based on each other - otherwise the rest of the picture would contain only the light stripes :-/ I thank your for your comments :-) --Grunpfnul (talk) 12:51, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

I understand. My objection is that the corner cuts-through the headlight trails while the tail light trails on the right side are not significantly obstructed. Assuming this image was from a bridge, a shot slightly from the right might have reduced the problem. Better move it to CR and see what others say.(I like the slightly weird headlight streak on the innermost lane(white(headlights without car))).--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 13:31, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

I'll try but the code for {{Assessments/translate/en}} is wicked. Also, I've never done any substantial translation nor any edits to templates so I will need a lot of help with that. Decline

Can you please explain your reason for decline? I dont understand this... :( --WhiteWriter speaks 15:57, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Sure. The musical elements (top left corner) differ in the PNG and SVG version.(see image notes). Currently, the SVG is used as a replacement to the PNG (superior, other benefits of using SVG format, etc) meaning that the SVG has to be an exact copy of the original PNG, just superior(resolution). However, since the PNG and SVG differ, which version is correct(not superior) needs to be determined. If the SVG version is correct, I would like to see a {{Retouched picture}} explaining about the changes in that portion of the image. Please delete the image notes later.--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 17:26, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Re:mr and hi translation

I translated valued and quality but there's a problem.
They appear translated only in some examples(last two sample usages) but not in the main ones(sample usages ten and eleven).

Another unrelated problem with the current english translation. In the sample usages about only quality and valued(10 and 11), "If you think this file should be featured on Wikimedia Commons as well, feel free to nominate it.".

I don't think that as well should be there for we are talking about assessments on commons only. That's for pictures featured on other wikis but not on commons.

I suppose that should be "If you think this file should also be featured on Wikimedia Commons, feel free to nominate it." but changing it would require some template-code editing. --Gauravjuvekar (talk) 18:05, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi,
I have fixed the issue. Not sure why it happened but it is fixed now. :)
"As well" here refers to files that have an assessment of some sort that are not featured on commons - that said the language can be adjusted to "also".

Using the ACS style makes it a pure bond-line formula(methyl groups are not denoted by CH3). Is this okay?--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 15:22, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
The manual of style says:
  • The use of explicit methyl groups in the following cases is a stylistic choice, and both forms are generally acceptable on Wikipedia:
    • methyl groups attached to a ring or as branches in a longer carbon chain
    • methyl groups at the end of a carbon chain
I prefer explicit methyl groups unless there is not enough space or maybe in really large structures. --Leyo 15:35, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
How about this. --Gauravjuvekar (talk) 07:54, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
It looks good. However, please do not replace the structure with explicit methyl groups in de.wikipedia, because explicit methyl groups are preferred there according to de:WP:WEIS. --Leyo 10:03, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
