Thank you for uploading files on Commons.

Please use existing pages/categories. For example Zebrasoma flavescens.

EugeneZelenko 15:58, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am still trying to figure out how to add it under the right page/category. I was using the Zebrasoma_flavescens.JPG page template, but it's probably not quite right either. I see the right way now. More images uploaded/fixed. Fredhsu 16:17, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh. I no longer know whether to use a 'License' section or add license information in the Information template. Perhaps both are required now. So that's what I'll do from now on. Fredhsu 23:06, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tilt[edit]

Hello,

I corrected the tilt on both images: File:Caneel Bay Turtle Bay Beach 4 edit.jpg and File:Caneel Bay Sunset at Scott Beach 1 edit.jpg. In fact it was not important, only 0.5 and 0.6 degree respectively. Best regards, Yann (talk) 09:19, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for helping. I tried that myself on my computer myself already. But don't you think a 100%-correct horizon actually causes an visual illusion of tilting? I think this is caused by the diagonal shoreline. Perhaps it is just me, but to my eyes, a 100%-correct, textbook horizon lines looks crooked because of the illusion :( I am now really confused as to how I should proceed. Fredhsu (talk) 23:09, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I corrected both images, in place, just like you did in the *_edit versions. For File:Caneel_Bay_Turtle_Bay_Beach_4.jpg, I uploaded a new version. For File:Caneel Bay Sunset at Scott Beach 1.jpg, I simply reverted it to a version I uploaded last night which was 100% straight. Thanks! Fredhsu (talk) 01:56, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Fred Hsu!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. I do :) In fact, File:Caneel Bay Bird 1 B.jpg is already a cropped version of File:Caneel Bay Bird 1.jpg. Don't worry about it. Not every single image needs to be QI. Not all images I submit for consideration are my best images in terms of composition or value. I care very much about composition as you may already guess from my review comments on other's pictures. But I try not to impose the same level of scrutiny on other's images as I I apply to my own pictures, in terms of composition, since QI is not all about composition.
I will probably crop it further for use as thumbnail on Wikipedia articles though, as I've done with some of my Bronx Zoo images. Fred Hsu (talk) 03:26, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Arabo-Spanish mosaics[edit]

Hello my friend ! Many thanks for your very interesting comments on my images ! You are very often completely right in your judgement. I've loaded a new version of my arabo-spanish mosaics... Do you think it's enough for you supporting now ? Happy to know you and to benefit of your nice pictures ! friendly from Paris.--Jebulon (talk) 17:04, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Of course. I'll take a look now. Fred Hsu (talk) 20:21, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm back ! Ô Grand-Master of the Noise Reduction Order ! I understood what you mean with my horse. And with my organ too. Not with my mosaïcs at all. Would you please have a look ? (Maybe could you comment here or on my talk page, because of the frame of the vote-columns in the QIC page...) Many thanks, my friend !--Jebulon (talk) 22:37, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. The candidate page doesn't give one enough space for decent comment :) My friend, I mean that in almost all your images, you seem to consistently apply very strong sharpening (organ, landscape, etc). In some pictures, you seem to apply strong noise reduction as well, when you don't really need to (for instance, the horse).
The Mosaic, however, was an exception. You did not apply any thing at all, as far as I can see. I commented that you should apply a little bit of sharpening, because this picture is great and is amenable to sharpening, because there is no blur due to motion, etc. You only need to apply a little bit, not full strength. What program do you use to touch pictures? How do you select the "strength"?
By the way, I ask for your forgiveness before I say this. I think your picture-taking skills and the time you obviously devote to this craft far exceed the limits of your camera. You should get a better camera with good sensor. Then almost every one of your pictures will be QI. I cut my teeth long long time ago on a second-hand Category:Canon AE-1 Program. My first digital camera was Sony F505. It was great, but obviously sucked compared to SLR. I've subsequently used a few 'prosumer' cameras and pocket-size cameras for convenience. I managed to take some good pictures, based on knowledge learned from SLR. But none of these can ever make it to QI. Check out File:View from Corona Heights 1.jpg, File:Sutro Baths Sunset.jpg, File:Architecture at Atlantis 7.jpg, and File:San Francisco Cable Car Racing Lexus up Nob Hill.jpg.
It wasn't until last year that I decided to pick up a real camera again. I bought Category:Nikon D700 and rediscovered the joy of photography. The camera does (almost) what I want it to do without me having to wrestle with it. The majority of my pictures are still junk. But I do manage to find a few presentable for QI consideration now. Fred Hsu (talk) 01:51, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Send me the original files for the horse and the mosaic. Let me take a look to see if I can suggest changes. Fred Hsu (talk) 01:57, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Date format[edit]

Hi Fred, I noticed that you add the dates of your images in the yyyy-m-d format (e.g. 2011-7-1). The standard date format here is the ISO format yyyy-mm-dd (e.g. 2011-07-01), which is understood by the Mediawiki software, which will then display it in the date format according to the user's preferences (e.g. 1. Juli 2011 for German users). Maybe you can consider these in future uploads. Thanks! -- H005 09:50, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

US Virgin Islands National Park Photos[edit]

Hi Fred,

I'm working on a guidebook to the national parks and I'd like to use your photos available at Wikimedia? If that's alright with you, how would you like to be attributed?

This is a one-man operation. I plan on self-publishing, print and electronic versions (DRM protected) for sale. More information is available at my website: www.stoneroadpress.com

Thank you,

File:Stereogram Tut Eye Convergence.png, etc.[edit]

Could we get File:Stereogram Tut Eye Convergence.png and similar files redone with the lines of sight slightly thicker? It is difficult to see them, especially if the image is displayed at a smaller width (at 220px I can barely see them). Hyacinth (talk) 10:42, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've been away from Wiki lately. You are right about these lines being too feeble. I'll find the original image (it was not a jpg) and make corrections when I have a chance. Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hah, that's cool :) I watched your video. It's great. Fred Hsu (talk) 19:30, 3 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you created a category called "Imperial Chinese Architecture Style", but I can't find it on wikipedia, and was wondering if the term has a specific definition? How is it different from "Chinese architecture"?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:40, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Fred Hsu: Hello, are you there? If you don't respond, I'll bring the issue to COM:CFD.--Kai3952 (talk) 06:48, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. I was on vacation. I don't immediately recall how or why. Let me dig a bit deeper before coming back. Fred Hsu (talk) 00:08, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK, @Kai3952: . You don't need to dig too deep. Just look at my edit history on both Wikimedia and on Wikipedia on the same day (aka March 1st, 2010) to see where this came from. So go here on Wikimedia Commons and here on English Wikipedia. See this diff where a picture was added to Chinese architecture in the "Imperial" section. The commit comment indicated "Imperial" as well. I'll add a link from the category page to the Wikipedia page for now, before the community thinks of a better way to improve this. Thanks for prompting me. I've been away from Wikidom for a while :) Fred Hsu (talk) 00:22, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This answer is not good for me. I know its architectural features include glazed tiles, but not enough to distinguish the Imperial Chinese Architecture Style from Chinese architecture. If you know all its architectural elements, you can add a description to the category. Now, I have created "Category:Imperial Chinese architecture in Taiwan".--Kai3952 (talk) 07:27, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @Kai3952: . You are making the world better. Please continue to raise the bar and prod everyone to march forward. Much appreciated. Fred Hsu (talk) 15:41, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Missvain - thanks for deleting it. I am very sorry you had to do the detective work for licensing issues. Much appreciated. Fred Hsu (talk) 00:24, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
