Vectorization coalition?

Hello, Fenn. I'd like to ask your opinion regarding an idea I had. It is clear that you are exceptionally skilled at creating heraldic vector illustrations. I and some other people from the online heraldry community have noticed that you're currently going through many vector heraldry files on wikimedia and improving poor vectorizations. I was wondering if you would be willing to join a sort of organized team effort to improve wikimedia heraldry. I figure the task would be much easier with more people involved. I myself have done vectorizations in the past and would love to contribute to such a project. Question

Hello Fenn! First of all i want to thank you for your terrific heraldic work, i really admire your vectorial skills. As an amateur heraldist, one of my goals is to be able to draw heraldic designs as you do. I have contributed with some simple heraldic designs, as you can see in my contributions, but i am wondering if you could give me some tips in order to improve my work. To get some shadows using Inkscape i use CTRL+9 shortcut to get a small traces, but i as noticed you get more shadows and lights, i'd like to learn how, if there is any shortcut or something like that.

I typically do all shading by hand, lighter parts on one side and shaded parts on the other. Instead of gradually changing the shading from the edge of the object towards the centre it's good to try to follow the natural shape of the object as if it was in 3D. It takes some imagining to get it right but practice makes perfect! Good tip is to have the outline of the charge be a separate object from the base colour so that the shaded objects can be underneath it as well. --Fenn-O-maniC (talk) 04:35, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Finnish border on Swedish maps

Hi,

Concerning maps of provinces of Sweden including the all derivatives, the northern part of the Finnish east border follows the much newer, 1947 line and many territories, including Ingria, Estonia and Livonia are missing. There is a number of pages in which these incorrect maps are used. Are you interested to make a new, correct base map for the historical provinces of Sweden and have you got enough of information for creating such? --Gwafton (talk) 13:02, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

I have thought about a project like that, the main problem being that the boundaries of the provinces on 17th century maps are pretty vague and thus not very reliable source. For example the border between Satakunta/Finland Septentrionalis and Tavastia varies a lot depending on the map, while the Kexholm County ought to be shown as a separate province from Karelia.

From my understanding the provinces were mostly ceremonial in a sense, while the administrative functions were handled with counties from 1634 onwards. Yes, most of the old maps are controversial. One option could be marking alternative borders with dotted lines, faded colours etc. Even the maps could not be made perfect, they could be improved significantly. Besides, the old maps are not an ideal source. Probably the best result could be reached by tracking the locations of the old cairns, such as here. I'm sorry, the colours in the Bohemian arms looked orange rather than red, I just tried to do a simple fix for it. The file is now completely broken. I had to fix it by completely ungrouping all the elements within. This renders the file useless for other users and future people who might want to download the file for study. This is a real shame and real damage is done. I apologise for the mess I made, I simply just tried to fix what I saw as an error in the original file, I had no idea it would cause this much trouble. From my understanding it's an issue with the clones of clones, which disappear in the website preview for some reason. Yep, I've seen some examples of the Pirkanmaa regional council using such flag but since it has mostly been in their meetings I'm unsure if it should be regardes as proper flag since the usage is so limited. Logos unfortunately aren't really my strong suit. Especially the Kone ja Silta and Crichton logos seem very complicated and vectorising them properly from the low resolution sources would be difficult. Even though the logos could possible be free of any copyright by now, the copyright status should be checked to see if redrawing them in vector graphics would be allowed. --Fenn-O-maniC (talk) 14:53, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I am not familiar with the law concerning logos — isn't it allowed to modify them even if they are saved into a particular Wikimedia project as a separate file? De jure arms and flag of Maine

Hi Fenn! Sorry for bothering you with another request, please disregard it if you do not want to do it. I could not help but notice how beautifully you redrew the arms, seal, and flag of New York, and was wondering if you could do the same with Maine. The situation is sadly thus that the arms and flag as currently seen on Wikimedia grossly misinterpret the official blazon, and it would be great if someone could upload de jure versions of them. Should you decide to take the request, the official blazon of the arms is "A Shield, argent, charged with a Pine Tree, a Moose‐Deer, at the foot of it, recumbent. Supporters; on dexter side, an Husbandman, resting on a scythe; on sinister side, a Seaman, resting on an anchor. In the foreground, representing sea & land, & under the Shield, the name of the State, in large Roman capitals, to wit MAINE. The whole surmounted by a Crest, the North Star. The Motto, in small Roman capitals, in a label interposed between the Shield & Crest, viz. DIRIGO.", while the official description of the flag is "The flag to be known as the official flag of the State of Maine shall be of blue, same color as the blue field in the flag of the United States, and of the following dimensions and design; to wit, the length, or height, of the staff to be nine feet including brass spear‐head and ferrule; the fly of said flag to be five feet six inches, and to be four feet four inches on the staff; in the center of the flag there shall be embroidered in silk the same on both sides of the flag, the coat of arms of the State of Maine, in proportionate size; the edges to be trimmed with knotted fringe of yellow silk, two and one‐half inches wide[...]" This page on FOTW explains the problem well. Looks like there's already File:First_Committee_Proposed_Maine_State_Seal_Design.jpg which shows the intended design. I could make a separate emblazonment following the official description but it would need to be clearly labelled as a "fictious" version, even then I feel like some users might object to using such designs on the relevant articles. There are some depictions of the coat of arms which follow the official blazon, such as this one in Maine State Museum, I think it would be better to use photos or scans of them if available rather than making a modern vectorised one. I've also been working on vectorising the de facto emblazonment used by the state, although the design's bit hard to follow faithfully in vector format. --Fenn-O-maniC (talk) 14:25, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for replying! While I understand many of your concerns, I would not go as far as calling a new blazon‐conformant vectorization "fictitious". On the contrary, I think that it is very questionable of Maine to not follow their own laws, neither when it comes to their seal, nor their flag. This criticism is in no way directed at you. Your voluntary work here is invaluable, and should not be taken for granted. With that said, one of the reasons that I would have liked a vectorization is that the illustration you found is uncolored, while the law specifies the tinctures that should be used. It would thus be of great value to have a digital version in color, which would actually conform to the law. This would also have the added benefit of being usable in a new vectorization of the flag, as the flag law specifies further details which many depictions lack.

Nonetheless, if you have already made your choice, then I shan't bother you any more with this issue. I wish you a pleasant Easter weekend!

Ii enclave within Oulu

Greetings! As you have noticed, I have begun updating your excellent series of municipal maps with your updated version showing the border of Åland. With that said, before I go on, I would like to ask you about Ii's enclave within Oulu. As that enclave seems to be bigger than many of the smallest municipalities, I personally thought that it would maybe make sense to show that one. Now, if it was an intentional choice to not show any enclaves at all, I shall leave you alone and happily continue updating the maps. If you on the other hand think that adding the enclave sounds like a good idea, you can just add it to the base map, and let me update all the dependent files. In any case, I just wanted to ask you before I continue with such a sizeable endeavor.

I intentionally left enclaves out to simplify the overall presentation. On their maps the national landsurvey also leaves enclaves and other details out until zoomed closer when such details would be relevant. It's exclave is indeed quite large but as is usually the case the population is low so there's no real harm done with omitting such details on a general map. Olen keskustellut asiasta parin vepsäläisen kanssa, ja heistäkin tuo uusi malli näyttää oudolta. Minulla on myös kopio virolaisen Fenno-Ugria-sukukansajärjestön Instagramissa jakamasta kuvasta, joka esittää heidän järjestämäänsä illallista viime viikonloppuna sukukansapäivän kunniaksi. Siinä seinustalla näkyy eri suomalais-ugrilaisten kansojen lippuja, myös vepsäläisten. Se ei ollenkaan muistuta tuota Commonsin nykyversiota, vaan ennemminkin maaliskuun 2022 tai vuoden 2006 mallia. Lipusta varmasti käytössä erilaisia malleja, sillä ainakaan tietääkseni sen tarkkoja värejä tai mittasuhteita ei ole missään koskaan virallisesti määritelty. Tiedoston nykyinen malli perustuu lipun alkuperäiseen leveä-ristiseen malliin, mutta netissä on pitkään pyörinyt kapea-ristisiä malleja jotka varmasti vaikuttaneet fyysistenkin lippujen tuotantoon. It would be an interesting project but I haven't come across versions of the file with large enough resolution to vectorise all the details in the arms properly, which might be impossible to begin with. Also the exact tinctures aren't very clear either. I think it would be better to crop the individual arms into separate files if a better quality source is available somewhere, this way the exact depictions would be preserved better. Vectorisation only really works for certain emblazonments of coats of arms while others it's better to leave them as bitmap files. --Fenn-O-maniC (talk) 15:58, 27 October 2022 (UTC)

Royal Standard of Canada Vector Request

Hello - I was wondering if you could help out getting a proper vector for File:New Royal Standard of Canada 2023.jpg ? I have limited skills in this area & would like to get a more accurate version onto the Royal Standards of Canada page on Wikipedia of the actual flag used May 6 2023 at Government House, Halifax (coronation day for King Charles III) in darker blue. There is a picture of the actual official flag used from that day on that Wikipedia page (and pictured here https://www.canadiancrown.com/did-you-know.html) & it does not match the current vector used there in design or darker blue colour. Vectorization of a 1900 British Empire coat of arms proposal

I am currently working on an article covering proposed British Empire flags, and one of the designs being referenced will require a vectorization of File:British Empire coat of arms.png in order to reconstruct. There is a recreation of the arms using Wikimedia Commons assets that I found elsewhere, and I wanted to confirm if it may have been you who created it. Bustard feet

I noticed that the bustard artwork could be reworked slightly in relation to the feet of the bustard. Bustards have tridactylous toes, i.e. there is no toe pointing backwards.

Hello, I wonder whether you might create the arms of the Counts of Rendufe, like this one https://www.heraldrysinstitute.com/lang/en/coat_of_arms_card/idit/16980/Coat+of+arms+of+family+Silva. The shield and motto are available on the link. Might it have the coronet of a Portuguese Count and the supporters of a Lion rampant on the left and a lion guardant on the right as these were used by the first Count.
