Hello, Diannaa!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Star Air Service

re: File:Star Air Service LogoA.jpg - plz see earlier correspondence here & on RoyDickson UserTalk page Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:17, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

RE: File:Star_Air_Service_LogoA.jpg I have never mastered all the complexities of the "File Source" rqmnts. I set this up with the help of one of your more expert users. As far as I can see all reqd info has been entered. If you want to rqst any additional info, I will be glad to respond, but I can't seem to find any helpful instructions by wading thru all the complex terminology. It would be to bad to delete this as it is a historic item, but there seems to be an ongoing effort to delete rather than enhance! —Preceding unsigned comment added by RoyDickson (talk • contribs) 15:37, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry for any confusion. I just needed to know where you got the file! Right now it says "Jack Peck photo", but that really doesn't man anything to me. Can you elaborate on the page: did a friend take the photo and give it to you? Did you snap it yourself? Did you get it off the internet? That's all I'm looking for. Thanks for your time, and thanks for your patience in the whole issue. Magog the Ogre (talk) 04:08, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

MORE - 3/28/2011 - A person named JACK PECK took the photo about 80 years ago and gave the photo to LARS OPLAND of Wasilla, AK who collects Alaska Aviation memorabelia, photos, etc. LARS OPLAND has give me written permission to use the photo and to post it on Wikipedia. If you wish I can give you his email address. Let me know. Regards, Roy Dickson www.alaskabushpilot.org

OK great. Could you do me a favor and if it's in email form, follow the instructions at Template:Image permission and forward the email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org so that we have a record of the permission on file? Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) 15:54, 28 March 2011 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by RoyDickson (talk • contribs) 15:21, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for the information. What you need to do is get an OTRS ticket attached to the file using the instructions provided by Magog the Ogre. Thanks. --Diannaa (talk) 22:17, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why?

Hi Diannaa.

I will write in my language, sorry.

--Diannaa (talk) 02:50, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I declined your speedy deletion request on grounds of a DR closed as keep a few months back. I have reopened the DR with your comment. Commons:Deletion requests/File:LogoSonair en.png -mattbuck (Talk) 01:43, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hola Diannaa.

Fuiste tú quien mandó a eliminar la imagen en:File:Municipalities of the province of Santo Domingo.jpg?.

--Diannaa (talk) 03:58, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Entonces puede la imagen volver a Commons o no?
The image can then return to Commons or not?--Inefable001 (talk) 07:05, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, they will just delete it again unless you get the proper permissions in place. The image will probably get deleted from the English wikipedia soon too.

No, sólo lo eliminará de nuevo a menos que obtenga los permisos adecuados en el lugar. La imagen probablemente se elimina de la Wikipedia en Inglés demasiado pronto. -- Diannaa (talk) 13:52, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Licensing on File:Seneca Niagara Casino Hotel and Tower.jpg

Hi,

I see you changed the licensing on File:Seneca Niagara Casino Hotel and Tower.jpg to match Flickr. That is my Flickr account, and I am the copyright holder for the photo (took the pic myself). Flickr uses the 2.0 but I'm okay with releasing this same image under 3.0 to Commons. If this needs to be verified through OTRS, please let me know. Regards. -- Whpq (talk) 17:54, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thanks. As long as you are aware and okay with it, that's perfect. --Diannaa (talk) 18:39, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Licensing on File:Final Destination Premiere.jpg

Yes, you can delete the image if you want. i understand it's url license expired and I have not found any replacement of the latter. Please notify me a day before you'll remove it. Thanks. --FDJoshua22 (talk) 08:54, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It won't be me that deletes it, because I am not an administrator on this wiki. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:32, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Concering the file :Coenonympha pamphilus-3.jpg

No, I don't know where this file File:Coenonympha pamphilus-3.jpg comes from. The work that I do on Wikimedia is mostly editing (i.e. the removal of watermarks in pictures). I have found on the page on removal watermarks [1]. Obviously the bot has made a mistake citing me as the owner and uploader of the picture. I at least cannot remember uploading it to Wikimedia commons. Citypeek (talk) 16:41, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User rights

Hi Diannaa. I'm glad to see you're active over here. I've added a few more rights to your acct in the interest of making sure you have the all the tools you need. Let me know if you have any interest in the patroller right. INeverCry 18:09, 23 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! -- Diannaa (talk) 20:26, 23 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your prompt review of the above file. However, both of us forgot to check the metadata. It says that the "Date of data generation" is 1958 and not 1948 as was claimed in the en.wiki title. Therefore, perhaps you should delete the file from Commons and re-instate it on en.wiki. Sorry for causing this inconvenience. Regards, Lovy Singhal (talk) 08:20, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the information. I have restored the copy on en.wiki for fair use in one article, and nominated the copy here on the Commons for deletion. Regards, -- Diannaa (talk) 05:29, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Shubra el kheima.png

This file was originally uploaded to the English wikipedia under this license by the owner of the blog. I simply transferred it to the commons (it was already flagged for transfer). I hope I won't have to keep doing this every time I transfer something to commons. --عبد المؤمن (talk) 15:36, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Many images presently hosted on en.wiki have been flagged for transfer (literally hundreds of thousands of them) but the tagging is done by a bot. The person who actually does the transfer should be checking the status of the licenses and making sure they are valid before the transfer is done. Items that do not have vaild licenses need to be deleted, not transferred, so sorry. For this particular image, there's no evidence that the person who uploaded the image to en.wiki is the owner of the blog. There's no indication on the blog that the material has been released under license. The best way to ensure that such files are not deleted is for the original uploader, if they are the copyright holder, to get an OTRS ticket in place using the instructions at Commons:OTRS. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:35, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

HIM byMaurizio Cattelan in Warsaw Ghetto 2013.JPG

This photo has been taken by myself so i am only copyright holder. Mathiasrex (talk) 19:48, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The photo is a picture of a painting done by Maurizio Cattelan, so there's two separate copyright issues here - copyright on the photograph and copyright on the painting. Maurizio Cattelan holds the copyright for the artwork, and has not released permission to us to display his artwork here. -- Diannaa (talk) 22:34, 10 January 2013 (UTC) Sorry these remarks are incorrect. The artwork is a statue displayed in a public place in Poland, which is okay for freedom of panorama, so I have removed the deletion tag. Sorry for the misunderstanding. -- Diannaa (talk) 23:00, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

deletion - why and what to do etc.?

Hello ~

I have received the following message - and below it is the message I sent earlier to permissions-en@wikimedia.org

I am the photographer of an image of Allison Crowe, whom I serve as manager, and I posted the photo for which I control/hold all rights to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons with the intention that it could be used freely by people.

For some reason or reasons I don't understand - my photo has been deleted.

Please help, thank you!

Adrian

my earlier email to Wikipedia:

Original Message -----

From: "Allison Crowe Music" <management@allisoncrowe.com> To: <permissions-en@wikimedia.org> Sent: Monday, August 19, 2013 4:06 PM Subject: permission to use my image files uploaded to Wikipedia+

Hello ~

I have uploaded to Wikipedia several image files for which I am photographer and/or creator and hold all rights and it's my intention to freely grant them to users on Wikipedia and Wikipedia Commons.

Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add OTRS pending to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

I am user Adrian22 and user Rimbaud22ca. I uploaded and identified these files in the way that I understood to be correct for a free use license:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Musician_Allison_Crowe_on_the_red_carpet_for_%22Man_of_Steel%22_World_Premiere,_Lincoln_Center,_New_York_City,_June_10,_2013.jpg

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Musician_Allison_Crowe_on_the_red_carpet_for_%22Man_of_Steel%22_World_Premiere,_Lincoln_Center,_New_York_-_June_10,_2013.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AllisonCroweNewfoundlandVinylalbumfrontcover.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SpiralAllisonCrowealbumcover.jpg

However, I have received notifications on these images that states, in part:

"This file is missing evidence of permission. It is attributed to someone other than the uploader, or to an external site which the uploader claims to represent or own, and while a licensing tag has been applied, there is no proof that the author has agreed to release the file under the given license."

I say that is confusing - as I am, indeed, the uploader and the pic is attributed to me. I shall keep looking at these notices - but, on reading this, I am unclear as to why someone or aomething would think that I am not the photographer and uploader. Any explanation is welecome, thank you. And in accordance with what I believe is required now, I attach the following letter granting you permissions for the free use of these files:

+

I hereby affirm that I, Adrian du Plessis, am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of the following linked works:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Musician_Allison_Crowe_on_the_red_carpet_for_%22Man_of_Steel%22_World_Premiere,_Lincoln_Center,_New_York_City,_June_10,_2013.jpg

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Musician_Allison_Crowe_on_the_red_carpet_for_%22Man_of_Steel%22_World_Premiere,_Lincoln_Center,_New_York_-_June_10,_2013.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AllisonCroweNewfoundlandVinylalbumfrontcover.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SpiralAllisonCrowealbumcover.jpg

I agree to publish that work under the free license "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported" and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).

I acknowledge that by doing so I grant anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product or otherwise, and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws.

I am aware that this agreement is not limited to Wikipedia or related sites.

I am aware that I always retain copyright of my work, and retain the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be claimed to have been made by me.

I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the content may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

Sincerely,

Adrian du Plessis Box 227, Ganges P.O. Salt Spring Island, BC Canada V8K 2V9

Replying on your talk page. -- Diannaa (talk) 03:23, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello - I responded to the notice I saw earlier today immediately - and do not understand - why have you deleted the image summarily? If there is no redress of things for weeks, that suggests perhaps some time and consideration should be given matters before hasty deletions are made - eg. on the same day as a notice appears. Please, help, and do not further the complications. Thank you. I control rights to ALL images I upload - either as being original photographer or creator and/or through deals made with any photographers or creators to obtain such rights. I thought I had entered everything correctly when I first posted any/all images. If I have not, that is due to confusion - not illegality etc. - and I will tend things when notified of same. But, if things are deleted so hastily, that creates a situation such as exists in your description - an image that is entirely legitimate, has been deleted - and cannot be restored for weeks you say. This is not good. Thanks for your time and consideration. Adrian du Plessis management@allisoncrowe.com

If you upload images that are later found to have already been uploaded elsewhere on the internet, your uploads are impossible to differentiate from copyright violations, of which we get hundreds every day. As you might imagine, many people claim to have the rights to images that they don't actually own. So out of respect for the rights of copyright holders and in compliance with copyright law, any suspected copyright violations are immediately removed both here at the Commons and at en.wiki. I see that at least some of the images now have OTRS tickets in place. Please follow up with User:Alan, the OTRS team member who handled your email, regarding getting any files restored that have not yet been dealt with. Sorry you have been inconvenienced. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:44, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Diannaa, for the fuller explanation. We come from different vantages to the same point. And, clearly, neither of us wants to see copyright violations. For someone such as yourself who is intimately familiar with the ways of Wikipedia, what is self-evident to you may not be so to one less acquainted, thus, your response here is most helpful. It can be something of a maze working through the various interconnected pages to ensure that a topic is addressed. Add to that such things as entering codes that one things are templates, but, then learning that the template is not entered. And so on. I do believe posts and content is all coming together - in mutual understanding. best' Rimbaud22ca (talk) 21:09, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bigger version of File:Bobby Byrne.jpg!

Love it - thanks for making the update. The file probably came your way because I randomly chose to move it to Commons & now it's all bigger and better! Leaving a note cause it made me smile. Kind regards -- Deadstar (msg) 07:54, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's how I spotted it. Lots of the Library of Congress images have a tiff file which is huge, so it can be downloaded and cleand up and converted to a jpg using this website. A lot of steps, but such an awesome result, and a great opportunity to use the word "embiggen"! -- Diannaa (talk) 19:28, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Confused about tagging

Hi Diannaa. I tagged File:Ireland-Capitals.PNG with {Cleanup image|14 old versions require deletion}. Another user has removed the tag with the edit summary sry, the guidelines do not allow this. He/she has left any tag on the image. What should I do in circumstances such as this? Is there another tag I can use? (I haven't been able to find one more suitable). To me it looks unprofessional to have 14 revisions still visible. Thanks in advance for the advice. SonofSetanta (talk) 12:09, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I don't know the answer to this question, as I am not an admin on this wiki. Perhaps the old versions are necessary for proper attribution? -- Diannaa (talk) 14:13, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks for replying in any case. SonofSetanta (talk) 14:26, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WikiLoves Monuments

I noticed your excellent new photos from Banff. I was just there myself a few weeks ago but didn't come away with many useable photos (for Wikipedia at least!). Your photographs are excellent quality and I encourage you to upload ones now through the end of September to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013. The top photos receive prize money! Last year's contest was the largest photo contest ever. Also, your answer on the last question thread about keeping old versions for proper attribution is correct. Royalbroil 18:13, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Royalbroil for the positive feedback, and for the info about SonofSetanta's inquiry. I will definitely consider entering the contest. -- Diannaa (talk) 18:29, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Diannaa,

You wanted to know how it is that the creator of the article about Emanuel Leplin has the right to use this photo. The photo was taken 67, 68 or 69 years ago. The person who took the photo was probably in the U.S. Army in Europe in WWII. S/he gave it to Emanuel Leplin. S/he did not claim a copyright. The photo was in the possession of Anita Leplin after Emanuel's death. About twenty years ago, Anita gave it to her son Rocky. Rocky scanned the photo, smoothed out rough aspects if the image in Photoshop, and uploaded it to the pending Wikipedia article about Emanuel Leplin. Rocky doesn't claim that he took the photo, just that it belongs to him. If he owns the image, and no one contests or has ever contested that he owns the image, and thus there is no copyright infringement, how could it be a violation of copyright law for him to publish it?

Hello Mr Leplin. Common-law copyright in the United States protects unregistered works. Therefore the image is copyright, regardless of whether or not the photographer officially registered the item. Possession of a copy of the image does not mean that the copyright has been transferred. And the person in the photograph does not own the copyright, nor do his heirs. The person who took the photo (or their heirs) owns the copyright. For anonymous unpublished works, the copyright expires after 120 years. For images that have been published, the status depends on the date of publication and whether or not a copyright notice was attached at that time, and whether or not the copyright was ever renewed. Please see the Commons:Hirtle chart for more information on this topic. Proof of prior publication is required for an image to be available to us for fair use. Fair use images should not be on the Commons, but only on the local wiki, in this case the English Wikipedia. The deletion discussion for the copy on the Commons is at Commons:Deletion requests/File:EL with pipe at piano.png. You are welcome to post comments there if you like. For the copy on en.wiki, where you stated the image was from the family archives rather than your own work, the image is scheduled to be deleted on Wednesday, 25 September, as it lacks permission of the copyright holder. -- Diannaa (talk) 00:56, 22 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Dear Diannaa,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

 • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

 1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
 2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
 3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

ArchiveBot

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1. Hi Diannaa, I founfed this sourse for File:MaximilianHell.jpg:

Hamy, Alfred (b. 1838) (1893) Galerie illustrée de la Compagnie de Jésus, 4, Paris: Chez L'auteur, p. T17 Retrieved on 3 September 2014.

published in 1893. However, I can't spell the author, who is indicated under the image. Moreover, the book may be a french translation of a latin one: here and here recalled. Is it sufficient to mantein the picture? Thanks. --Harlock81 (talk) 11:18, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I can't read it either; the writing gets too blurry at high zoom. It should be enough though; I will withdraw the deletion nomination. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:35, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your nomination of File:Tahoe19882.png for deletion

Hi there, I normally work on the assumption that if a person claims to be the creator of an image in the license, and it is they who uploaded the image, then source may be assumed to be them. Many images on EN Wiki were uploaded without the standard template, and hence do not explicitly state source=self or source=username. This image comes into that category, so I transferred it from EN Wiki to Commons assuming it met commons guidelines : originally uploaded by by the creator and copyright owner. Unfortunately, the transfer process does not tidy this up, and leaves source on Commons empty. I normally get around to cleaning up this problem on Commons a little later. Conclusion : I think we can keept this image after cleanup. regards, rod. Rcbutcher (talk) 01:51, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree on this particular shot, as it looks like it was professionally taken, and is web resolution rather than the size one would see if the uploader took it with their own camera. It may have been copied from here. -- Diannaa (talk) 13:37, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely stolen from that website ! It has to go. How did you find that website ? Rcbutcher (talk) 20:42, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you use Chrome, you can right-click on any image, and a wee menu will come up. Ask to "Search Google for this image". Find copy vios in an instant! If for some reason you are not using Chrome, add this to your common.js (on English Wikipedia):
//
// Googling (based on Commons:MediaWiki:Gadget-GoogleImages.js):
if (wgNamespaceNumber == 6) {
 var images = document.getElementById('file').getElementsByTagName('img');
 var imageurl = images[0].parentNode.href;
 mw.util.addPortletLink('p-cactions', 'https://www.google.com/searchbyimage?image_url=' + encodeURIComponent(imageurl), 'Google Images');
}

//

On Commons, go to Preferences→Gadgets→GoogleImages tab: On File pages, adds a new tab to easily search for similar images on the Internet using Google Images. -- Diannaa (talk) 23:41, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for taking the time to educate me, this is awesome (to me anyway). Rcbutcher (talk) 06:39, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

DLindsley (My talk page) 20:50, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reminder. I will go back and add categories to them later. -- Diannaa (talk) 20:53, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome. :) DLindsley (My talk page) 21:48, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Image Licensing

If you don't mind answering a quick question: I want to upload this image [2] to Commons; should I use Template:PD-1923 or Template:PD-scan? Also, the website claims it has copyright over all content on the website but since the image was published in 1903, does that make it public domain anyway? Thanks, Altamel (talk) 03:40, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You should use PD-1923 since the image was published in the United States. The image is public domain, regardless of the claim posted on the website -- Diannaa (talk) 03:43, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the answer. Altamel (talk) 04:01, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think the source information would need to be provided by Ninam. Still, given that Đura Jakšić died on 1878, I don't think it's an issue ;) I have thus removed the nsd tag. Cheers Platonides (talk) 21:20, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's important to have a source, so that we know the person has been correctly identified. How do we know it's the right guy? -- Diannaa (talk) 01:36, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Hi Diannaa, I saw the edits you made to the files I moved from en. I added User:Magog the Ogre/cleanup.js to my account. I'm planing to be more active here, is there any do's/dont's you think I should know about, when moving files ? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Mlpearc (powwow) 02:46, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think the script worked OKMlpearc (powwow) 03:14, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

 • Hi Mlpearc. Thanks for asking.
 1. Don't bother moving images that aren't properly sourced, as they just have to be deleted. If you notice unsourced files on en.wiki, they should be nominated for deletion rather than brought over to the Commons. Don't move files that are not the own work of the uploader unless they are obviously and provably in the public domain or have an OTRS ticket attached.
 2. Try to focus on files that will be useful on other wikis, and/or files that are already in use. See en:Category:Move to Commons Priority Candidates for some likely candidates.
 3. When moving files, make sure the data gets transferred accurately: Watch that you move the full-size version and not a thumbnail. Fix oddities and errors so that the patrolling admin has little or no work to do to clean up the file. For example, this becomes this (note the clean-up in the info box and especially the difference in the licensing).
 4. It depends how far you want to go, but oftentimes for historic old files there's a bigger better version out there, particularly those images available at the Library of Congress. For example, File:WI-Wauwatosa-1892.jpg, File:AJ Bessell-Browne.jpg. Old images can also be cleaned up easily using readily available software. It doesn't have to be hi-tech to create a dramatically better image, and it's fun and satisfying work with a lasting impact on the quality of the site.
 5. For your sample image, you could remove the templates Center and Yesno from the licensing section, since you already have the edit window open to use the script. Otherwise it's a good un. -- Diannaa (talk) 03:20, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
 • Wow :) thank you so much, this will definitely save some time and work and improve quality (I'm hoping my access to OTRS will be approved, I can help out even more) again thank you for the help. If I can help with something specific, please let me know. Cheers, Mlpearc (powwow) 03:31, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely, will do. -- Diannaa (talk) 03:54, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't upload it, I moved it from en:wikipedia. What you do with it is entirely up to you. Personally, I couldn't care less. Go to en:wikipedia and look for yourself. If you have a problem with the file, it's your job to fix it, not mine. It's not my file. Mike Hayes (talk) 01:04, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I know you moved it from en.wiki. It now has to be deleted from both the Commons and en.wiki. Please be more careful what files you move to Commons in the future. Thanks, -- Diannaa (talk) 01:13, 2 February 2015 (UTC) If you see files with inadequate evidence of permission in the future, please nominate them for deletion instead of transferring them here. That will cut the admin workload. -- Diannaa (talk) 01:24, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What qualifies as "inadequate evidence of permission" in this particular case? The rules state that if you are not the owner of copyright, Wikipedia needs and e-mail from the owner. How do I know whether or not the uploader is the copyright holder, or whether Wikipedia has received an e-mail giving permission? User names are almost never real names, so how is one to tell that they are not one and the same? Mike Hayes (talk) 15:59, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We do know in this case that the uploader is not the copyright holder, as they specified at the time of upload that the image is the property of Avenida de Colores, Inc. The usual way to prove ownership is for the copyright holder to send an email to the OTRS team from an email address that is related to the corporation. The same could be done in the case of a professional photographer, as most would have a website and related email address. Once the OTRS team receives a permission email, they add a PermissionOTRS template to the file. -- Diannaa (talk) 16:43, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

In order to protect the rights of copyright holders, images that have already appeared elsewhere online require proof that the copyright holder has released the image to Wikipeida under license. There's instructions at commons:consent. -- Diannaa (talk) 22:37, 10 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ticket#2015042810006497 ____ I have made the necessary modifications to the file page.

Thank you for your contribution to Wikimedia Commons. Yours sincerely, Sreejith Kulamgarath

Wiki guys, it all too confusing to new users! Each one comes and gives new messages. It would help if you could check the ticket and make necessary arrangements to add OTRS instead of deleting! How negative approach to things.. Also how can it be found on twitter 21st April first when original was uploaded to wiki commons on 20th April 2015?

Really .. It amazing!

Mpadma 11:21, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, I did not see the April 20 upload, because you uploaded it under a different file name. Once the OTRS email has been assessed, an administrator will make a decision. -- Diannaa (talk) 14:18, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of my files

Me, and certainly me! has taken those pictures you deleted because of copyright. I used my own camera to take them! I'm the webmaster of http://iamt.tums.ac.ir/ webpage which also includes these pictures. How can I prove that I took this picture? can I send 100 other pictures of this event (from other camera viewpoints for example) to prove that these are all my pictures and I just choose the best one to be uploaded both on wikipedia and http://iamt.tums.ac.ir/? Or maybe I can change a tag on the webpage to ensure you that I am the webmaster of that webpage you cite as the source of this picture? Fowlia (talk) 05:27, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Diannaa. Thank You for your message. The file is not a copyright violation. It is marked and I will remove those markings from all the files. However I do not understand why the file File:Training Scheme Structure-1.jpg was also deleted as it is not marked and I have the copyrights and have granted wikipedia with a license: "An email containing details of the permission for this text has been sent in accordance with WP:OTRS." What else should I do to be allowed to upload those jpgs? By the way, being new to wikipedia. Am I doing it right to answer on your talk page or should I reply on my talk page so it would than resemble a conversation. Regards Wodnikprasowy (talk) 04:41, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I thought I recognized your name from somewhere and couldn't figure out where. I just realized your one of the people who supported that last ban bullshit over at ENWP. So since you don't want to collaborate with other editors and don't want high output dedicated editors like me editing your project, please don't contact me in the future. If you see something that needs to be deleted with my name on it just delete it. No need to contact me over it. I only want to work with editors who want to collaborate and it's obvious to me that you do not. I do understand that some tools contact the uploader automatically and I understand that, I will just ignore it though if I see your name. I think we will both be happier that way. Happy editing. Please help

I am blocked and banned in English wikipedia. No one wants to help me.

I was banned by community after a proposal by a sock IP. The IP was lying that I was stalking GorillaWarfare. Nobody tried to verify anything from GorillaWarfare. There were many impersonating socks of User:Undertrialryryr who makes personal attacks against users copy pasting my signature code. Only Vanjagenije knows the tricks of Undertrialryryr.

Then TopGun tried to link me with a previously banned User:Maheshkumaryadav. I am an Indian Bengali but Maheshkumaryadav is a Yadav.

SQL revoked my talk page access yesterday. I don't know whether banned users are ever unblocked. You know how much I worked against spammers and paid editors in Bollywood related articles. At this time, how long shall I wait. Even BASC is disabled. UTRS administrator asked me to email ARBCOM. My email is also blocked in English Wikipedia.

What should I do now?--The Avengers (talk) 04:41, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

MikeV says that in an OTRS ticket, you confirmed you are CosmicEmperor. As an admin, I can see the deleted attack pages that you created about GorillaWarfare. I don't think there's anything I can do to help you. Sorry, Diannaa (talk) 13:54, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's okay, if you don't want to help, but I didn't want to create any attack pages. I was commenting on the talk page of two user who were harassing GorillaWarfare. In those days in June 2015, I was unaware that commenting on a red linked talk page of any user, is equivalent to creating attack pages. If that was my intention then I would have done by logging out with an IP or any public wifi IP. I wouldn't have used my main account. As you can see what I wrote, I won't repeat that. I thought, if those users believed me, then they would stop harassing GorillaWarfare. I don't remember the other usernames, but as I regularly visited WP:SPI, in that period from April 2015 to June 2015, many trolls and vandals were creating usernames similar to either GorillaWarfare or Molly White. There were even SPI investigations against those accounts. They even started ANI post wasting others time. I should have left them like that, instead of doing what I did. Thanks. --The Avengers (talk) 14:31, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I can see why you believe you created attack pages inadvertently. But it's not so much that you created the pages, it's what you said. You got no business saying that, or anything like that. It's derogatory and insulting. Combine that with your extensive history of socking, well, I have no interest in trying to help. Diannaa (talk) 14:36, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This is my last comment in this post. I am very sorry for making such comments about GorillaWarfare. I had apologized to GorillaWarfare through emails in June 2015. You can ask GorillaWarfare through email. Reading your reply, I can say that difference in culture is responsible for my comments. Something which is considered a joke in my place; is considered derogatory in English speaking world (I wish I knew at that time). I promise, I won't create any more block evading socks or repeat such acts for which I was blocked. After 8 months, in December 2016, I would request you to give access to my talk page in English Wikipedia. Thanks. --The Avengers (talk) 01:43, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why you have put purcari jpg in deletion list?

Hi Dianna, I am not sure of any other way to contact you via Wikipedia, but I wanted to ask why you have been busy deleting all the content of our Wikipedia page at the Colorado Division of Aeronautics. Anna Bilinska's painting of a black woman. Help please.

Hi, I happened upon this wonderful painting today. I noticed too that you are one of its users. I wondered therefore, if you could help with renaming its categories. The English translation of the Polish, Murzynka, simply means A Black Woman. It is not clear how it acquired the offensive English term, but it needs to be changed to contemporary acceptable usage. I have moved one page, but got stuck on sub-categories. Could you help with this please? Kind regards, --Po Kadzieli (talk) 23:17, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Diannaa, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Deletion of LaFrae

Hi - you nominated [3] for deletion because that picture is up on discogs apparently. I checked, and it is indeed there - but I took this picture myself and uploaded it. I suspect someone stole it from here. For one thing, the version on discogs is of a lower resolution. Anyway, I'm not sure of how to proceed regarding them stealing the image - would you happen to know? Thank you. Tduk (talk) 01:08, 26 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question on Licensing

Hi, this template

Photographs available at www.audiovis.nac.gov.pl are public domain or the owner of the copyrights is the State Treasury of Poland, represented by the National Digital Archive and which grant free of charge licence for free use of the materials on all known exploitation fields.

suggests that images found in the National Digital Archive are public domain or the owner of the copy rights is the State Treasury of Poland and can be uploaded to commons. Is that a correct assumption? Meaning, am I a liberty to upload to commons any image? Do you know? Cheers MisterBee1966 (talk) 08:23, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request for help

Mr Hilton and I worked together from 1981 until his death (treasurer, board member). He did not copywrite his materials, they were available to all for broad intellectual discussions. As it was put on the back of his journals "The World Affairs Report may be quoted, providing acknowledgement is given" I just want people to remember Ronald, so how can I best do this with a publication he loved and labored daily? You help is greatly appreciated! A photo of his cover is self evident acknowledgement of his work, what can I add? — Preceding unsigned comment added by FAHansson (talk • contribs) 14:53, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Antony Willianson

Hi,

I noticed you addressing a photo by Antony Willianson, File:Pinpeat Orchestra, Silver Pagoda, Phnom Penh.jpg. You pointed out there is no indication that permission was given to use the image. I'm thinking that is the case with all the images he has submitted, or at least I 8haven't been able to find indicative on the websites that the material is under a licence. The only image I know for sure is ok is File:Pinpeat Orchestra taken in 1900s.jpg, which is actually in the public domain (I'm gathering proof of that to submit--I think I found a postmarked stamp on a postcard of the image from 1907). The text in the w:Roneat ek article is more problematic... It seems well written, but with translation issues, which I want to clean up. I'm hoping I won't find plagiarism... Since you're looking, I thought I would communicate. I'm not sure when I'll have time to investigate. Jacqke (talk) 04:57, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

File:Pinpeat Orchestra taken in 1900s.jpg might be in the public domain, but we would need to know the exact year it was taken to be sure. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 11:52, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I understand. I bought the postcard with the date (not competely clear in the auction photo) and should have it within the next 10 days. The postmark will confirm that the card was published by 1907 (or a different date, if I misread it.)Jacqke (talk) 12:57, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the photographer of that image was Category:Pierre Dieulefils who died in 1937. His works have been listed in commons as being in public domain in places where the works go into public domain 70 years after the authors death. The operative countries would be France, Cambodia and Vietnam.Jacqke (talk) 13:04, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright Violation for my uploads

Why did you mark them as "own work"? Why did you not provide a source url?— Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 16:40, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Diannaa, I am a very novice user and I am learning as I go, so I would please ask that you are a bit kinder.. this is only my second ever entry (which I was editing late into the night). At the time I believed that to be true, I believed that as I purchased the images from the site that I 'held the rights' to them, for lack of a better explanation. I can see from further reading today that this is not the case and they are only 'licensed' to me for use in certain ways, which is very different. May I ask that you please delete the following list of images so I may re-upload them in the future under the correct licensing section and after confirmation of some details from the 123rf.com customer care team about their distrubtion.

Image List for deletion as follows - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Observation_Monitor.jpg

On a personal note, I have to say that my experience of Wikipedia as a 'contributor' so far has been terrifying - the formality and legal tone of the language directed at beginners from admins and senior users is anxiety enducing. I loved adding to this article yesterday and I feel it really needed a boost but I will be seriously considering my role as part of the community after seeing the emails and notfications I woke up to today. The messages you wish to convey to new users could be achieved with a more supportive and understanding tone - people make mistakes. The 'alert' and 'warning' style logos associated with each message make me feel like I'm recieving a cease and desist letter or a court summons in the post - just horrible. I just had an email from a bot telling me I must sign all posts with a signature - sums the experience up. --JPLN89 (talk) 17:53, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@JPLN89: Sorry you have had a bad experience. We have to be extremely careful though – as the 13th most popular website worldwide and 8th in the United States, we have to take our obligation to protect the rights of copyright holders very seriously. We can't accept copyright content, neither prose nor images. If you found the editing experience itself to be fun, perhaps you will try again. But you will have to write your own text and take your own photos, which is a lot harder and not so much fun for most people. “I hate writing, I love having written.” – Dorothy Parker. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 15:14, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator

Hi, Diannaa. Many times I have seen your name associated with maintenance tasks such as deletion requests and other various file tags. You're quite experimented about our practices in Wikimedia Commons, I am convinced that you as administrator would be a very good benefit to us. I would gladly support your request for adminship should you ever make one, or I would do that request myself should you wish it. Best regards, Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:27, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

Stephen Jefferies

Hi, Thanks for editing the page on Stephen Jefferies dancer. I am his son and did the original edit, but am new to Wikipedia. My mum wrote the biog, but I have now added all references I can find on the topic. Hope these suffice. It also states him now as being a German ballet dancer. This is inaccurate. He is a British ballet dancer who happened to be born in Germany. I am unsure how to change this in the search results. Any help would be appreciated, thanks, Christopher Jefferies Yesdijefferies1985 (talk) 08:37, 9 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ALA logo on wiki page

I made the case for this overwrite before realizing I could just suggest the change to the original uploader. It boils down to vector > raster. Vector will look better longer and on more systems. Raster is limited and the current .jpg already appears riddled with artifact noise and degraded color.

Again, more links and info on the file's talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Busboywithasilence (talk • contribs) 23:52, 29 June 2016‎ (UTC)[reply]

Elimination of André Freire's photo

Dear Diannaa,

Thank you for your message. Thanks to your work, I realised that the photo was from a Journalist, and not at a conference. I will be asking Professor André for an original one, so that I can upload here. In the meantime, since I do not see a declaration on free use for this photo, I have to recognise that it should be deleted.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by KaiserViriatus (talk • contribs) 18:44, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Evidence of permission (!?)

Hi there, you have marked that my recently uploaded File:Copy of Viet Nam national anthem.png lacks of "evidence for permission" under {PD-VietnamGov}. The bottom of the uploaded picture it has already stated that:
"This copy is provided by the Department of Performing Arts (of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Vietnam)) and attached with archive no. 588/NTBD-QLBĐ of July 23rd, 2015",
...while the Vietnamese regulations stated:
"documents issued by state agencies, political organizations, socio-political organizations, sociopolitical-professional organizations, social organizations, socio-professional organizations and people’s armed forces units...are not under copyright protection" (according to the template's translation)
...which means that the image satisfied to be a state-provided document that should be in PD. The evidence is already in the file itself, what else do I need to provide or prove? The Vietnamese texts in the bottom of the image is already an indirect confirmation that the image is in PD due to its status being a state-issued document, please reconsider this one in case that you could not know this due to not understanding Vietnamese.

According to the article at en.wiki, the preson who wrote the song still holds the copyright. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 11:24, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, [6] reports that the family of the author Văn Cao has "formally contributed the song to the State and the People of Vietnam", the family representing the dead author has given up their copyright ("from today it no more belongs to us but the People of Vietnam"). The en.wiki also mentioned that the sheet is indeed free, both with the right to make recordings based on it and also under PD-VietnamGov ("...opinions claimed that although the lyric and music sheet of the anthem is free, it is legal..."
The uploaded music sheet is definitely in PD, even en.wiki confirmed that. Hwi.padam (talk) 16:46, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Who confirmed it on en.wiki? — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 19:39, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It was clearly mentioned on en.wiki, I even quoted it above if you want to double or triple-check it. Hwi.padam (talk) 19:53, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You need to post your comments on fhe file talk page, not here. Thanks. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 19:40, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well it was you who added the template on the file. There's definitely the talk page tab for the file, but I could not find a specific page to deal with this issue (e.g. deletion talk page) so I don't know where's the right place to address it. Hwi.padam (talk) 19:56, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
