First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

NYWTS photos[edit]

I love them! Where are you downloading the high-res versions from, out of curiosity? --Fastfission 18:47, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's genius. Thank you for the tip! --Fastfission 01:09, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ESA images[edit]

Please re-read the license conditions, images either fully or co-credited to ESA are not for commercial use. But that's a requirement at Commons:Licensing. --Denniss 20:49, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your delete tag[edit]

Hello Davepape. You wrote:

Note: tagging this image as PD-NASA doesn't make sense, since NASA didn't exist in 1934. --Davepape 01:52, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
 • Note: Yes the NASA tag is correct. The subject worked for NASA. The photo is stamped on the back NASA. I will copy this reply to your talk page and to the image page and remove the delete tag. Thank you. -Susanlesch 02:05, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
 • "Source: Photo is an electronic photo of a physical photo in book of photos. Photo has a NASA stamp on the back that contains an explict statement that this photo is not copyrighted.

English version:

ZeroHourCollage deleted

How can you actually not break a copyright when you make a collage of ingame screenshots?! As soon as you post a screenshot or any content of the game its not self-made anymore. Why isnt every screenshot of ZeroHour delete, not just mine?! And who the heck cares if theres a copyright - Im not selling the stuff and no-one makes money with it! It's just for people to see how the game looks!

Image:MikeNess.jpg[edit]

You said: Unlikely that a cable modem user in Argentina owns the copyright to all these PR-type photos of punk bands. Note that Image:MikeNess.jpg even has a copyright watermark on it, for Jeanne Rice (see [1]) --Davepape 16:25, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the information. What do you suggest would be the best way to tagg the image? or should i delete this one only becouse of the watermark? you're right i haven't seen that mark. I'd really appreaciate your helf so i can fix the others before someone deletes them. Those are for use in the spanish wikipedia wich doesn't have many pictures, very, very few becouse they are always speedy deleted. It's a shame. Help me chage that. Thanks a lot.

Re: I suppose I should note that, if the Spanish wikipedia allows fair use images, you could upload some of them there instead of commons, with appropriate fair use explanation and tag. --Davepape 18:35, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Spanish wikipedia disabled all file uploads so he can't upload it there. Yonatanh 19:37, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Hey, thanx for the info. Yeah i figured out they did that, I'll try with the pic of mike ness, but i have absolutely no idea who the copyright holders for the others may be! isn't there a way to link them to the approved pics the english wiki uses?? thanx!

Hi. I have been in communication with Herby about the Gallery page for Friedrich Kellner. I do apologize for establishing the page with the incorrect format. I have spent the morning changing everything about in order to conform to the proper Gallery format. Please do look at the page and let me know if I need to make further changes. I have also left a similar message for Herby. I do appreciate the help. I am always grateful for advice. And I am keeping my fingers crossed that I did it right this time. I seem to always need to do things twice in order to make them right. I suppose that's part of getting close to being 70 years old. But with your help I will persevere. Thank you. Taxonavigation[edit]

Hello, Davepape, thank you for changing taxonavigation. I think , it more simply to create and to keep in order. Espacially thanks for "changing" your bot in the night. Greeting Orchi 10:40, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing those. --Evrik 20:37, 1 March 2007 (UTC) I was trying to fix the 'deprecated' template by adding the new one. I will be more careful. --Evrik 20:43, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

 • Explain again why cant the new LOC template also have copyright information in it? That was the nice thing about the old tag. PD-USGOV is just so big. --Evrik 20:48, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Taxonavs[edit]

Hi, Your bot is replacing the taxonavs, good work but with some errors. In the Category:Amphiprion_nigripes) the species name include the autority (good!), but the link send to an inexistent category: this lasta category should not take linkage. I will be notify the errors while I chek it the the changes. Regards, --Pristigaster 16:31, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'd noticed that too - the old Taxonav species didn't bother to make a link, so it hadn't mattered previously. I'll run a check for redlinks in everything it changed, and see how much there is to fix. --Davepape 16:42, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Correction and internationalisation in Template:Painting[edit]

Hi - I took a look at your request in Commons:Bots, and saw that there are still a lot of paintings to be updated, so I've set up a script to help work on it. You can check its progress at Special:Contributions/DavepapeBot. Let me know if it does anything wrong. --Davepape 02:56, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing wrong... Very good job. Thanks. Educa33e 21:24, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Damn... I found a little trouble with ' for example here. Educa33e 00:24, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Language templates[edit]

It's great you do * en: => But you have killed my observed - more than 100 affected images :(

Maybe you should use random algorithm to choose works of different users and do not do large amount of this to not spam observed?

--WarX 08:15, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WarX, you should be able to ignore bot edits. I just dropped by to say great work this bot is doing. :) --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:00, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, you're bot is doing a good job. There are a few more templates to replace. For example PT, IT, .. ([1], [2]) See this edit for example. You're bot missed them in the preceding edit. --norro 18:23, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing those out. I hope I now have a complete list of the deprecated templates, including redirects, and will start fixing some more pages. --Davepape 21:12, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Taxonavigation[edit]

Hi Dave,
You really did a great job with the Taxonavigation bot.
There is a little problem with the usage of Taxonavigation: some pages uses "Domain|Eukaryota|" (which is good) some other pages uses "Superregnum|Eukaryota|" (which is incorrect).
Could you run a bot to change this to "Domain|Eukaryota|"?
Could you also replace by because there are 2 cat Category:Zoo de la Palmyre (bad) and Category:Zoo de La Palmyre (good) which I would like to fuse.
Thanks in advance and again Congratulations for your work.
Cheers Liné1 17:45, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't we get the NASA sources of these images and just upload them over the enhanced versions and delete the enhanced versions? Yonatanh 04:42, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I (and others) did that earlier (e.g. Image:Antsiferova - Landsat 7.jpg). I used different names, so as to replace them in the articles while the deletion request was still open. Unless someone re-added them to articles (checkusage appears to be broken right now), all the oceandots versions were orphaned a couple weeks ago. --Davepape 04:48, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I didn't see that. You used orgullobot to orphan? Anyway when checkusage is down commonsdelinker won't work so if they're still in use in some articles we'll be able to find out later (or when annoyed users come and complain). Thanks, Yonatanh 04:58, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I did the replacement manually, with checkusage. Couldn't use orgullobot, as I wasn't an admin at the time. --Davepape 05:00, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In the permission section for this photo you've written "share with attribution only for non commercial-use", which sounds like a non-commercial license. But below that you've tagged it simply , which does allow commercial use. As non-commercial licenses aren't allowed on Commons (see Commons:Licensing), I would suggest that you update the image to clarify this. --Davepape 01:53, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Info Thank you for the warning, the image has been updated. The same change has been made for the Image:Pyramide du Louvre et Tour Eiffel.jpg. --Atoma 09:00, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understan why if [3] it's the same than [4] this need other information. I don't know who is the autor but this image is a picture of Bolonia's University and it has more than 70 years. And others images like [5], [6], [7] are pages of Concordia Discordiatum Canonum, book of 12-13 siegle. Who I might put them correctly? --Libertad y Saber 17:00, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok i will put all the information. About this image [8] other adminitrative has said that i must delete the "self" licence. That is correct?. About my images (self licence), for example 1. They are correct? Thank you very much. Your help has been esencial for me. --Libertad y Saber 21:31, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please delete Image:Weiser2.gif. Copyright :( --Libertad y Saber 22:53, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yonatanh has deleted it. Is [9] already well? I believe that I should put a GFDL license (that is the most restrictive of three photos). Thanks! --Libertad y Saber 14:34, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dave, this image certainly doesn't show any Mammillaria. To me the plant looks much like some sort of Echinocereus. Could you please check your records for the true plant name?. Greetings, Ies 17:32, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are two different files with the name Bryce Canyon Hoodoos 4 edit.jpg. The one marked with the badname tag is the one to delete. Thanks. --Digon3 21:24, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Licenses[edit]

Do you have a basis for the GFDL license claims on your uploads? For example, on Image:Revueesth.jpg you say it comes from a bookseller website, and I don't see any mention of GFDL there. --Davepape 02:40, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

yes indeed: see the web site of the editor : [10]. In France, all covers of books on Internet (bookseller) are under licence GDFL.--Kccc 02:48, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: GFDL/bg[edit]

Eugene- You appear to be the only admin claiming any knowledge of Bulgarian, so could you take a quick look at Template:GFDL/bg and let me know if it looks okay? The non-existent template has been vandalized a dozen times in the last month, so I copied text from the bg wikipedia's GFDL template, just to get something there. Thanks, --Davepape 18:38, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I understand Bulgarian, it's correct translation. However, I'll ask native Bulgarian speaker (User:Bggoldie) to verify too. --EugeneZelenko 14:48, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

X Japan images[edit]

Hello, I've noticed that you have deleted some of the images I've uploaded, first of all this one http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Hidemuseumoctober2003.jpg, what's that? It's just a photo of a museum, look this one: Image:British Museum Great Court roof.jpg, oh, there are some posters... we have to delete it. And then the image Hideface-jpg, it's just a cropped part of that picture, if that man/woman took the pic and released it under GNU Free Documentation License I think that we can make other versions of the image and also you don't know if that posters are copyrighted. Then, this pic -> Image:Hidewall.jpg, it's just a photo of the museum, what's the problem? there's lot of pictures around WikiCommons that contain posters, here there's one: Image:Bayard Rustin NYWTS 3.jpg, and the people that took the photos didn't took photos of posters they took it of a museum, objects exhibited at a museum, somehting like this -> Image:BM, AES Egyptian Sculpture (Room 4), View North.4.JPG, it's a sculpture from a museum and it's on WikiCommons and someone made it, and we have the photos of a poster, what's the difference? Actually I would pay more atention to photos like this one (Image:Xjapan02.jpg) or this one (Image:Mana.JPG) rather than deleting free images. Thanks. And also, what about this? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Posters Pepitodos 15:42, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sculpture in U.S.[edit]

Davepape, sure it is fine to delete Image:Spoonbridge-and-Cherry-2004-07-23.jpg. I have read the applicable discussions and agree with you. Incidentally I only know of one image anywhere in Wikimedia of work from this museum that qualifies as acceptable -- a photo that is itself a work of art -- because they specialize in contemporary work. Not easy to find. Best wishes. P.S. An admin in Wikipedia helped to sort out the other image (I was wrong and the license has been corrected). Thank you. -Susanlesch 22:15, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

I just want to be sure if this license is okay, from what i've read in the guides I'm quite sure it is, but since my English is not that good and my first flickr photo was instantly deleted :-P I prefer asking. Thanks. --Fache 22:09, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As I thought, thanks. I think you should take a look at the photo that confused me. Image:Stewart copland01 flickr.jpg was reviewed by the bot who said it was ok but when I go the the URL of the photo [11] the license is non commercial and non derivative [12]. Greets. --Fache 14:32, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, everything understood. Thanks for your time. --Fache 23:07, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Taxonavigation[edit]

Hi Dave,
I have a phylosophical problem with the Taxonavigation template and the plants.
Are we suppose to fill taxonavigation with classical classification or with phylogenical classification(See Morus_alba who has a phylogenical taxonavigation)? Or Both if we can (In which case, we could modify the taxonavigation to give a clue on which classif it is)
I think that there is the same problem with the categories: classical, phylogenical or both.
Cheers,
Liné1 07:12, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PS: If you think that I am taking chinese, please let me know and I will go in detail ;-)

Remember that my involvement has been purely technical, implementing the bot to do the conversion of the old template. I'm not a Tree of Life person, I don't really think this is something I can provide input on. I see you've also posted the question on the template talk, which is probably the best place for it. --Davepape 17:58, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - while cleaning some uncategorised pages, I came across Stegostoma fasciatum, which led me to a category with the same name which sits under Category:Orectolobiformes. Image deletion warning Image:Red_wolf_pups_-_captive_breeding.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Image deletion warning Image:Thomas P. Stafford patting Snoopy.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Hi. I have some serious concerns about Image:US Government most-wanted Iraqi playing cards.jpg, how it came here via BetacommandBot, and how it persists here under the questionable judgement of Betacommand. You have participated in the discussion of bot status for BetacommandBot, so I'd like you to participate in the discussion of Image:US Government most-wanted Iraqi playing cards.jpg. Rachmaninov copyright issues[edit]

Hello. I wanted to clarify a point in your discussion of the copyright status on the deletion discussiion page: the important date in determining protection is not the date of composition, but the date of first publication. That is to say that if something is written in 1910 and published first in 1911, it's (probably) public domain in the US. If something is written in 1890 and first published in 1924, it's protected. I have not been able to locate a first publication date for either work, but the copy at IMSLP.org which claims public domain status because that service is located in Canada, where protection is only life plus 50 years.

I would suspect that both the Concerto no. 1 (revised version) and the Moments Musicaux were both published for the first time in the US (where copyright used to be determined) after 1923. If this is true, then they are protected. I know that this will probably not be a popular conclusion, but it will solve the problem.Gretab 08:15, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The only way that I can see to solve this problem is to call the US publishers, since the servers are in the US and US copyright law would apply. I notice that you are in New York State. Both of the publishers are in NYC. Perhaps you might call them to see about this? They are - for the Concerto no. 1 EMI APRIL MUSIC INC

 C/O EMI MUSIC PUBLISHING
 ATTN: JENNIFER INSOGNA
 810 SEVENTH AVE
 NEW YORK , NY, 10019
 Tel. (212) 830-2005

And for the Moments Musicales :

BOOSEY AND HAWKES/RACHMANINOFF
 C/O BOOSEY AND HAWKES, INC.
 35 EAST 21ST STREET
 9TH FLOOR
 NEW YORK , NY, 10010
 Tel. (212) 358-5300

Of course, people will complain about the "Music Industry", but they do hold the copyright, after all, if it's still valid. They can also give you conditions for a "fair use" which would be acceptable to them. Gretab 08:49, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok[edit]

Thank you for warning me, you can delete the pic.

1) So only pics that state notihing more than NWYTS can be used. 2) Are the Garvey and Puccini pics ok marked ? 3) Could you check the other pics that I uploaded, please :-) ?

I saw on some pic that are accepted on commons the licence similar as in Remarque, so i added the example and info and removed the deletion template. If i did a mistake, correct me and revert my change, but then please explain which pics can go and cannot. But in detail, if it is not a problem :-) --Clockwork Orange 21:14, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

answering your question[edit]

 • Regarding your question on the "licensing board" - They cannot. Presenting these files here is considered to be "public performance", not "mechantical licensing" in the case of streaming, but fixed copies in the case of download. In one case (public performance) ASCAP would apply. In the other, it would be the Harry Fox agency or the publiser in the US. They probably had a mechanicals contract which specified payment for each copy made (although I can't known that until I see the actual contact). Who's paying for the copies downloaded here? And if they're streamed, that doesn't fall under a "mechanicals" license" but under pubic performance, since these performances are "on-demand". Nobody's paying for those: certainly not the WMF. There is no way that this falls under any agreement that Pandora made with either Fox (or the publisher) or ASCAP, or both (or neither, as the case may be...)

Now, why didn't you ask me this queztion in the first place? Are you convinced that I'm a shill for ASCAP and the publishers? Gretab 20:52, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for adding this request. I totally support your opinion to delete the copyvio but to keep the PS-USGov version. I am writing to you because SteveHopson, who uploaded the copyvio on en.wp and here, keeps sending messages to my talk page showing disrespect to my reasonable copyright enforcement. On October 2, he considered my image reversion mistaken. When I replied to disagree his opinion, he then said today "Again, check your facts before accusing other editors. Your accusation is false."--Jusjih 01:49, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Belfast[edit]

You're right, it's not crown copyright, mea culpa, I unthinkingly added the same label I'd been using for the other IWM photos which I've added. However you're wrong, it's not a copyvio, it's published by the IWM and has been released into the public domain, where it's use is listed as unrestricted. I'll find a free use tag and fix it. --Benea 19:07, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Haven't had time to find one yet. Will do so as soon as I have enough free time. Regret I am a student and as such am spending my time time between being disgracefully drunk and extremely hung over. Perhaps you could point me to where the correct license is for a corporation that has released its images into the public domain? Here a Cray, there a Cray...[edit]

Hello. I have a decades old love of Cray computers; not the kind of love in which I know what I am talking about, but the kind of love in which I heard about them and want one.

I was looking at images of Cray (lately, I have wanted one that could be upholstered and used as a quasi-art deco style sofa) and you have uploaded an image of one here at the commons.

Goddard Space Flight Center Sofa

Yet, there is almost this same same same image at NASA GRIN but they say that this computer is at Ames. Should I get your photograph and try to make it look like the one at NASA or should I get the photograph from NASA and try to make it look like yours? Or better, can you help me to understand? Did they move the computer and the room to Ames? Or maybe all Cray and all the rooms that house them look alike. -- perplexed in the vicinity of Moffett 04:37, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As for which photo you should get, I'm not sure what you want to do with it so I can't answer that, but the GRIN one ought to be uploaded here; I hadn't seen it before. Ames is another major center of supercomputing, and they would certainly have had their own, separate Y-MP. The machines just all look alike, and computer rooms all tend to look alike (big open space, plain raised floor, drop ceilings). Funny that the pictures are similar, though - I guess that's just the naturally preferred angle to shoot a Y-MP, if you can't get above it. --Davepape 14:54, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. 78.54.214.38 06:31, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(As a matter of fact, it already was in 2 galleries, just as this template suggests to do. --Davepape 13:26, 9 November 2007 (UTC))[reply]

3 fairy wren images[edit]

Dear Dave, on 18th november you deleted 3 images I uploaded concerning fairy wrens. After sending through initial permissions from the authors I was told to get proper ones and send thru to permissions@..., which I subsequently did. Maybe you missed the subsequent permissions sent through. Currently I have very poor internet access for 2 weeks and am writing this at 30k connection so cannot deal with it in detail but I would appreciate some clarification as 2 of the images are on FAs on en.wikipedia. Sandia[edit]

Hi... Yeah, I really went to town today uploading images from Sandia... I was having so much fun grabbing good info I couldn't help myself. What a treasure trove! Today was my first day on the commons but I've been on overdrive on wikipedia lately. I'm in a data acquisition stage right now because there isn't enough to work with on wikipedia. Ok, so help me a little if you would. Sandia is part of the National Laboratory system as I understand it. The lab is run by private contractors but under a federal mandate. I figure this means data from Sandia falls under a federal umbrella. One thing to consider is that the leadership of Sandia has switched back and forth a few times. I'm not absolutely positive of this but in the back of my mind I remember that these Nat Labs change hands a bit. I can write back to Chuck at Sandia to see what he thinks about the uploaded images. I think I fulfilled his accreditation requirement but I'm no expert. What more should I ask of him to make it clear. I'll do whatever is required. I really don't know though. I want to figure out how to do the uploading legally and all that but most of wikipedia's uploading instructions kill me. I need a Rosetta stone for them or something. I'm a smart guy but the instructions make me crosseyed. Yikes man. I was done for the day with my uploading in any event. I'll read the Commons:OTRS document you suggested but I figure it's going to stump me like all the other wikidocs do. If you can give me any other advice I'd appreciate it. Please work with me. I'm working on bringing the solar energy page up to FA. I'm just a novice but I have a lot of energy so your help is a good investment wikiwise. Man... I've got to stop making wikiwords. Jeez, it's just too easy. cheers... Mrshaba 04:41, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi... 30 seconds later... I read the OTRS page... The problem appears to be the free license tag. I'm not sure if Chuck is going so sign off on this. Can you suggest how I should ask the question of the webmaster in a way that explains what I'm asking for and what he's granting? An example email for example. Sandia[edit]

Thanks for the advice Dave... There are about 10 pictures out of the 100 I uploaded that I'd really to keep. I'll jump through the hoops to get these validated. I hear your arguments concerning the private vs. public nature of Sandia. They are good arguments but I'm not convinced. At this point the burden of proof is on me and that's fine... I'll do my best to provide proof quickly. I'll read through your suggestions and write back to the webmaster by the day's end. Mrshaba 18:31, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image: Friedenthal_1874.jpg[edit]

This file was deleted. I have uploaded the picture of Karl Rudolf Friedenthal and I had specify a source and a copyright. The picture was made in 1874 by a photographer in Berlin and sometime ago I bought the original photo in an antique shop. The picture was never published and I wanted to share it with the Wikimedia and Wikipedia community. I wrote the Wikipedia article about Friedenthal too. If it´s so "difficult" to bring a original photo into wikimedia then I forbear from doing it. Best regards from Berlin - Ralfie –- Ralfie 04:04, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the problem was that you did not specify a source and copyright. The source was listed simply as "own" and the only copyright information was a claim of GFDL licensing; neither of these is likely to be true of a photograph from 1874, which is the thing that matters. For both encyclopedic and copyright purposes, we need to know these details about the original photo itself; the image could most likely be restored if they were given. --dave pape 19:56, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

San Francisco Armory image deletion[edit]

Are you the person who deleted the two images of San Francisco Armory I uploaded. If so, I'm a bit miffed at you – those images were removed before I even so much as had time to respond. That was very unfair behavior on your part if you handled that way. I want to note that I had express permission from Peter Acworth, owner of Kink.com, to freely use the two images in question on Wikipedia, something you might have taken into account if you'd given me time to respond before deleting the images.
