First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, DMacks!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

HI MACKS (POSTEROUS.COM)

Yes of course I am the same person who have uploaded the images in posterous.com and here. I own those blogs in posterous.com. And those are my pictures only.jianjames (talk.

Great! Just wanted to verify. Unfortunately, we get a lot of users who unfortunately do not understand copyright as well as you, and think they can claim anything they find on any website:( DMacks (talk) 06:21, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

I transcluded your deletion requests in this page in order to call other chemists' attention to it. You might want to add this page to your watchlist. --Leyo 17:03, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! I'm still learning my way around the non-content parts of commons. DMacks (talk) 17:05, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
You have been doing a good job so far. :-) --Leyo 17:15, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

duplicates

Hi, I just wanted to inform you that there's a template for tagging duplicate versions of an image. Cheers --NEURO  11:36, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! DMacks (talk) 17:44, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Need your help

Hey, some genius has uploaded tons of crap from wikibooks. Can you help me to i) tag them as duplicate or ii) to add some deleton requests? Many thanks and cheers, --Yikrazuul (talk) 13:13, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Do a bulk/mass nom? DMacks (talk) 13:33, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
The nice tool "Nominate for deletion" makes it easier for me, and some images have been tagged as duplicates. But in general I agree. I tried to delete them on wikibooks, but failed. Now the crap is on commons...--Yikrazuul (talk) 13:42, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Gotcha. What a mess:( Will work on them ASAP. DMacks (talk) 13:43, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
File:Nucleosides.JPG is a scan from some biochem textbook, right? DMacks (talk) 15:01, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I think so! --Yikrazuul (talk) 16:12, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Tagged. I've got a half-dozen possibilities in my office, can try to check them tomorrow if it's declined per lack-of-actual-original-source in the nom. DMacks (talk) 16:16, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Nice work! Quality control here on commons is not easy! Cheers, --Yikrazuul (talk) 21:37, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Polyurea

Hello I need your help very much dear DMacks. I want to produce polyurea for coating roofs. Please help me and say all the information you know about polyurea.I know that polyurea is produced with 2 components and do you know what are these componenets and dozes of it.

THanks a lot

Best regards. Please send the answer on my e-mail as soon as it possible : googla003@gmail.com Thank u. —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 46.49.23.43 (talk) 12:36, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

The English Wikipedia has an article that clearly tells you some details about this material and its components: en:Polyurea. There is an article in the Russian-language Wikipedia ru:Полимочевины also--I do not know if that is easier for you to read, but it appears to have similar information. DMacks (talk) 16:19, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Benzene images

I've removed the Duplicate tags from the benzene images you added it to; that tag is only for exact duplicates. As there are substantive differences between the files (varying line thickness, varying size of the circle relative to hexagon etc) it should be handled through deletion requests - and they might even be worth keeping precisely because of those differences.--Nilfanion (talk)

Omg, the line thickness is not the same! We are doomed. --Yikrazuul (talk) 11:16, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
I know full well that chemically the representations are identical. However, they are different graphically and that may make the "wrong version" more useful in certain contexts. Benzene is identical to Benzene chemically, but you wouldn't use the word in Courier in a paragraph of Times New Roman.
This is why Duplicates are eligible for speedy deletion, whilst redundant files must go through a deletion request. Its hardly the end of the world to have a dodgy file hang around for a week.--Nilfanion (talk) 12:06, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
I know that Nilfanion, but you have to admit that it is now very bureaucratic and time-consuming to open a regular deletion discussion for those minor differences, e.g. the transparency of the background... --Yikrazuul (talk) 12:38, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
Actually a DR is not any more time consuming in terms of edit time: Tagging the file and saying why is one edit for both approaches. Deleting the file is also one click for the admin in both cases. The time-consuming step here is replacing the file, not the nominating for deletion.
The difference is a full DR means people will have the chance to check it actually is a correct deletion. Not identical = not speedy, as what is minor to you might not be minor to someone else.--Nilfanion (talk) 12:50, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
Seems like the time-consuming part (replacement) is (in principle) easier when there is a standard way to parse the replacement filename--a bot can read duplicate and do it all with one click across all wikipedias' all uses. Actually that would be a useful tool regardless...would make these sorts of cleanups easier (maybe it exists and I just don't know about it?). At least for the chemistry world, we do try to keep each other alerted to deletions of topical interest, so we manually add their discussion-pages to Commons:WikiProject Chemistry/Deletion requests‎...that's another step that is not needed for Duplicate, and it's actually more time-consuming than the tagging itself (can it be automated somehow?). DMacks (talk) 13:46, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
Leaving aside the bureaucratic nonsense (if you "have" to notify the wikiproject for every deletion, you ought to for any deletion whatsoever - however its requested - and if you can Dupe tag without notifying you should feel free to do the same for the "obvious" deletion requests), it should be possible to hack a modified version of MediaWiki:AjaxQuickDelete.js to add the DR to the Wikiproject page as well as to the main log.
If you aren't already aware of it User:CommonsDelinker/commands is the place to go to get replace the files across Wikimedia as a whole. Access to the command page is restricted to admins due to (the obvious) risk of misuse.
Oh and one request of the Chemistry project as a whole, when you do get the redundant files deleted, it would generally be helpful to create a file redirect from the old to the new.--Nilfanion (talk) 23:58, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
I asked the question at MediaWiki talk:AjaxQuickDelete.js#Additional transclusion to WikiProject subpage. --Leyo 22:59, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
The script now exists, see Commons talk:WikiProject Chemistry/Deletion requests. --Leyo 18:30, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Date format

Hi DMacks. I stumbled accross your image of which the date it not internationalized. What about using Commons:Upload/Chemistry or just add the date parameter a the YYYY-MM-DD format? --Leyo 21:00, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

It's a good point, I keep forgetting to use that upload-form because it's not linked where I tend to look (until moments ago:). So instead I wind up using ~~~~~ because it's fast to type. DMacks (talk) 21:04, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Cyclization of levulinic acid

Thank you very much for checking File:Cyclization of levulinic acid.svg. Now I made new version. Please check it. --Mixtures (talk) 16:21, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

It looks believable now. However, is hydrogenation and then cyclization to form valerolactone true? The english wikipedia article says levulinic acid cyclizes to dehydrovalerolactone and then hydrogenation. I cannot find a reference for either one. DMacks (talk) 20:56, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
Actually, I consulted referred to en:gamma-Valerolactone. But I cannot read the text of the reference No. 3 now. Please wait for a few days. --Mixtures (talk) 00:40, 3 July 2011 (UTC) add DOI Mixtures (talk) 00:44, 3 July 2011 (UTC) and modified Mixtures (talk) 04:22, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
I have access to the ref. Will check it tomorrow and post excerpts. DMacks (talk) 07:34, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
I have to say so sorry. I read the paper and US patent 5892107. This patent says

Upon distillation, dehydration of levulinic acid occurs and α-angelica lactone (γ-lactone of 4-hydroxy-3-pentenoic acid) is formed together with some β-angelicalactone (γ lactone of 4-hydroxy-2-pentenoic acid).--US patent 5892107

The SVG file is rewritten based on this patent and uploaded now. Please check again.--Mixtures (talk) 14:28, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
Looks great now. Thanks for following up and fixing! DMacks (talk) 05:01, 6 July 2011 (UTC)
Thank you again for your help in this work and coping bad name on these structures! --Mixtures (talk) 14:01, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Nomination for deletion

Hi, I just thought the file was not a "own work" of the uploader due to the lack of meta data. Assuming this I tagged these files for deletion. Then what's the difference between a file (own work) that lacks metadata and the one which has. --Vensatry (talk) 16:43, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

I do not understand the question. Metadata does not prove who owns the license to the file. DMacks (talk) 23:39, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
Well can you elaborate the meaning of "Own work" according to Wikimedia commons. I suspect these images might have been taken from some websites and the uploader could have done some polishing using a photo editing software. Correct me if am wrong. --Vensatry (talk) 08:57, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
I agree Meta data has got nothing to do with the license, but how do you trust the image is actually a "own work" of the uploader. --Vensatry (talk) 08:59, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
You may be right that an image is not actually an uploader's own work (and this does happen often for certain image topics). However, as commons:welcome says, "assume good faith for the intentions of others". "Own work" means the person created it from scratch (actually took the photograph or created the image by hand). I agree that many non-experienced editors think that "I found the image online and cropped it, or scanned a DVD cover, or captured a frame from a movie, therefore this image is mine", but that is not correct. There are lots of cases where it's easy to detect this because we can find the original image they used. What evidence would you accept that any own-work claim is valid? It's trivial to insert non-authentic metadata, and a photo-editor may retain the original photo's data. DMacks (talk) 17:42, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Beta aspartame

I should have more faith in myself. I double checked my work. [1] I should have gotten a "tie breaker" before fouling my image up redoing the stereo bonds. Thanks.Novangelis (talk) 17:53, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Diagram looks good now. However, I'm not sure what you are seeing in that link...its absolute stereochemistry is the same as what you (now) have, not what you previously drew. DMacks (talk) 23:32, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi DMacks. Here now seems to be a SVG bug. --Leyo 17:24, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

I think not now, but still. I just compared the old and new .svg files and the only differences are the x/y coordinates of the 4 changed elements (3 bonds and one atom-label) and the bounding-box so those items are visible. Rant: I hate svg because there appears to be no best-practice that gives a file that both renders correctly (IIRC a long-standing WMF bug not an intrinsic svg problem?) and still has "chemical editability" (can change element-labels as text rather than naive graphical paths). DMacks (talk) 17:34, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
I always convert text to path in my SVG chemical structures. The way I make them (ChemBioDraw [EPS] → Scribus [SVG]), this is done automatically. --Leyo 17:41, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Regarding Question

I don't know if they where miss entered during the migration process, or if it is a bug in the CommonsHelper tool.--Clarkcj12 (talk) 19:57, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Regarding File:HexosesHemiacetal.svg

Just a few comments on your citation. 1) The artifacts that you complained about were introduced when I converted the original raster image I had prepared to an SVG using InkScape. I'm no power-user of InkScape, and so it's quite possible that I didn't set all the conversion parameters correctly. 2) The faceting is only visible when you expand the image to full screen. Please observe that on the wiki pages where this image is used, the image size is sufficiently reduced to make the faceting nearly (or completely) invisible. 3) This particular image illustrates a very special property of aldohexoses, and its applicability to wiki pages is very narrow. It is unlikely ever to be used on any wiki page that does not also include the surrounding text (or translation thereof) that appears on the en.wikipedia.org page. 4) Anybody who is willing to do the work to prepare a cleaner version of this illustration is welcome, as far as I'm concerned, to overwrite this version, provided, of course, the new version gets all the details correct.

I will check my computer at home to see if I still have the raster version. If so, I would welcome tips on how to do a better job of importing it into InkScape to avoid conversion artifacts. If you know these tips, please post them to me. Karl Hahn (talk) 16:41, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Looks nice. Thanks for the prompt fix! I appended a comment at the DR discussion. DMacks (talk) 15:54, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

I have trouble connecting the Phenyl group with the Carbonyl-group in that image. Can you provide an example. The original image has only "Ph" on the end of the carbonyl.--RicHard-59 (talk) 15:43, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Now it looks chemically correct. In all previous, you had an extra carbon along that chain--a serious chemical mistake. To solve the spacing/collision you are worried about, you could either reposition the nearby CH3 to go down instead of to the right or else swap the oxygen and phenyl-ring positions on the carbonyl. This would also be a chance to fix the ring to which they are attached--it does not appear to be a regular hexagon (some sides are different lengths?). DMacks (talk) 05:46, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. In that case also A-ring: I copied A-ring to make the phenyl-ring...--RicHard-59 (talk) 11:58, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for a civil and straightforward explanation. If it really is such a problem that a simplified representation is wrong, then delete away. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:21, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

File:C3H4Oisomer.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi, remember File:C3H4Oisomer.jpg? I add 2-oxabicyclo[1.1.0]butane on this image and I have vectorized it. About the wrong CAS number for 2-methyloxirene, the only one without CAS on diagram, I found CAS#2835-41-8 on the Japan chemical substance dictionary web service but I have a big doubt when I see what PubChem returns with this CAS number ... I wait for more information before add it on the diagram. --The Titou (talk) 19:19, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

 • You also should add a tautomerism equibrium arrows between 1-propyn-1-ol (CAS#6175-54-8) and methylketene (CAS#6004-44-0). Ynols are also unstable like enols.

File:Dicobalt-Octacarbonyl.svg geometry/perspective

Hello DMacks,
your comment:

"This new .svg shares my concern about geometry (or at least an unusual
and deceptive perspective) that I listed at File:Dicobaltoctacarbonyl.png.
What you have is visually planar at each Co, not octahedral."

I think you're right in some way ;-)
So I've uploaded a new version, more strictly derived from here:

 • <=>

I hope, the octahedral structure around the Co-atoms is now more clearly shown and it's a refinement to the better side!
Jaybear...disc.17:19, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Looks great thanks! Let me know if you want me to explain more of the gory details of the geometric differences. DMacks (talk) 17:59, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I've once studied the "... gory details of ... geometric differences ..." for myself ages ago
I was a little lazy to take the png-version as 100% correct structure, I think.
But another question:
Do you have infos about the structure of the third isomer of the three, as they should been watched in IR spectra datas?
(I don't have access to the whoole pdf-doc here)
Jaybear...disc.19:03, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
Ah, wasn't sure your background on the subject:) Yes, I have the full article...for the third one they propose two possible (CO)4Co–Co(CO)4 cases, differing in the geometry of Co centers. Their preferred one is File:CobaltCarbonyl.png, having each trigonal–bipyrimidal, with each Co occupying an equatorial position on the other (unlike File:Dicobalt-octacarbonyl-non-bridged-3D-balls.png, where they are trigonal–bipyrimidal but each Co axial on the other). And it has the Co–Co conformation placing the axial axis of each Co rotated 90° from the other. I'll see if User:Benjah-bmm27 can render it using the same style as he did for the other two. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. And also:

Hi DMacks. Your files listed above are in Category:Chemical images that should use vector graphics. Could you please check, if the tag may be removed (in the case of high resolution PNGs), if there is already an SVG version, or if you consider uploading an updated version of higher resolution/quality on top of the old? Thank you. Leyo 13:45, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

These images are all high resolution PNGs drawn to current CHEM MOS. Certainly they could be redone as SVG (none currently have SVG equivalents on commons), but I cannot do so easily (one of the silly limitations of Mac ChemDraw is that it cannot export that format even though it can to PS and the Windows version can to SVG!). Those were all tagged by someone else, so I'm not going to blindly reject their concern if someone wishes to pursue drawing them in a different format. DMacks (talk) 10:36, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Re: SVG bug

I also noticed that. When I open the file in Inkscape it looks fine. And a bitmap/ODF export in Inkscape also works fine. I have uploaded a higher resolution svg. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/A_graphic_view_of_Acid-Base_Indicators.svg but in this version the text in the infor box is missing in the displayed versions which looks fine when opened in Inkscape. I have also added a hi-res png https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Acid-base-indicators.png and changed the image on the pH indicator page with png for better display. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Damitr (talk • contribs) 06:39, 8 September 2014‎ (UTC) (UTC)

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1. Re: The factual accuracy of the chemical structure File:Ferrocyphen.svg is disputed

Sorry, I don't have much time, but I just corrected the chem formula, it took few minutes to edit in Inkscape. ¿Is easier to you to tag wrong formulas for disputed than editing them by youself? --Amitie 10g (talk) 18:06, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

My chemdraw cannot export svg, so I cannot generally do substantial chemical diagram svg work. I can easily do png (my chemdraw does that, so I can easily completely fix any incorrect structure in that format). And I did fix File:Ferrocyphen.png at that time. DMacks (talk) 21:59, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

I do not know a good way. But the way you are doing it is often against Wikimedia policy and often against the law as well. See Commons:Licensing for the official policy, and a nice flowchart explaining the things you are allowed to upload. DMacks (talk) 03:45, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Reuse images from an ACM publication

Hey Mack, I have been going through the journals published by ACM and all the publication material seems to be copyrighted by "American Chemical Society". See for example, here. Noce that they place a copyright tag and in bold. Does this mean that the published reactions and material in the text is copyrighted too? If yes, then can they be reused in WikiPedia articles? I might be missing info on appropriate license tag that someone might have created here. Moreover, ACM seems to strongly oppose open access (here). Enlighten me. --Rubber Duck () 20:41, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

@Krishnavedala: Sorry for the delayed response...somehow didn't get the notice that there was a new talkpage message:( It is indeed all copyrighted. You can use the ideas (with cite, as appropriate), but not the text. You can use and rewrite the actual data/result-values (with cite), chemical names, etc--facts aren't copyrightable--but not simply cut'n'paste a data-table or a paragraph from a methods or conclusions section. Some diagrams and other graphics might be copyable (with cite) depending on what they depict. The basis is whether it's simply an intrinsic fact of nature (which is uncopyrightable for that reason) vs having some creative or other value added to it (an artistic representation based on nature). Almost always, facts of nature can be redone from scratch (a diagram redrawn, a piece of data or chemical formula written out) and some derived results can be too (though it gets harder when you're talking about a graph or a complex molecular rendering).
On commons, only free is allowed (either free because it's a fact of nature or free because it is a creative work that is created from scratch and licensed freely). On en.wp, there are cases where non-free content is allowed, but there strict limits (essentially it must be fairly important for adding encyclopediac value to a certain article and there must be no way to get a free equivalent that would fill that niche). Let me know some specific image-files you have in mind and I can take a closer look and their situation. DMacks (talk) 15:42, 9 May 2015 (UTC)
I think I wrote the comment while updating the file description for File:Strecker_application.svg. When I updated the citation, I wondered about the journal policies and sure enough, there was the copyright tag in bold. If what you say is true and what I understand is the same, the license tag on this image (and I am sure, may others) are very erroneous. Did other wikipedians already look into this and create an appropriate license tag like they have for "re-use" of / "re-creation" of images based on images and information that is already copyrighted? see for example :Template:. These will probably fall under Commons:Derivative_works. Even though I created the image entirely on my own accord but based on prior work, I should not be considered as the 'Author' and/or 'Creator' of the image. The scientific publications need to have an expert review in my opinion. --Rubber Duck () 16:54, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
PD-chem is the standard for chemical diagrams. But it's just for the image itself. Sourcing info (which would include the original from which it's a derivative) would be separate. But if it's truly public-domain by its very nature, then the licensing does not depend on the original's. IMO it should be cited to help explain what the heck the image is illustrating and give credit, even if it's not a license requirement. DMacks (talk) 22:48, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi DMacks. The bond on the right hand side appears to be very short (like a dot almost). Could you make it a bit longer? --Leyo 12:43, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

Bots

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:03, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

I didn't upload this file. You should ask User:Magnus Manske who did. Octave.H (talk) 15:09, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

I didn't bother notifying that bot-manager, but I did also notify the user to used the bot to do the upload. (The gadget blindly notifies everyone who did an upload, in case there are license-relevant changes or a later editor has additional info the original did not.) DMacks (talk) 16:17, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
The "Original upload log" sections clearly indicates it was this guy. --Magnus Manske (talk) 17:37, 31 July 2015 (UTC)
Yup. Inactive for almost 4 years, and not exactly a strong history of good-faith editing (including potential license misrepresentation for this file in particular). I didn't bother to do the cross-wiki notification. But it would be interesting if the commons gadgets would do so automatically in general. DMacks (talk) 19:35, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

Modification of Tetrahydroxanthenone chemical structure.png

On looking at the article entitled 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase inhibitor, which I had written quite a few years ago, I realized that my original structure as well as yours are both incorrect in that they both neglected to add a double bond that resulted from the cyclization. I replaced it with an image entitled Tetrahydroxanthenone corrected chemical structure.png. It is done in the same format as your image and looks fine on the page. I seldom contribute to Wikipedia and am not all that experienced with removing images. I see now that my original image as well as your follow-up image really should be removed. If you can do so for both images, that would be most appreciated. If not, I will work to remove only my original image that was done in (I believe) ChemSketch.

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

DMacks, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

File:Carbovir.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Happy New Year, DMacks!

Watkin Tudor-Jones picture copyvio?

Greetings, It says you deleted the Watkin Tudor-Jones jpg because of "all over the web"... can you point to the sources of the image you believe are out there? The person who uploaded the work claims it's his own image from a video he took himself. While his edits are not the best as a wikipedia editor, I am initially inclined to believe him when he makes such a claim. I myself had tried an image search on that image and wasn't able to find a match. Thanks. 73.150.131.135 14:39, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

@73.150.131.135 and Gene Zef2: [4] is the first one I found by image search. Digging deeper found [5]. Clearly someone took these pictures, who therefore presumably owns the license and could decide to open-license them, and then they could post them or someone else could with proper attribution. But given it's present on more than one site, with no suitable license or deeper attribution in either case and the uploader's name doesn't match those sites, I don't think "it's mine, believe me" in an on-wiki statement is sufficient from a new user uploading a bunch of files that seem to be available elsewhere. COM:OTRS is probably the way to go. I'll be happy to undelete and send it to COM:DR where the uploader can restate their claim if you think the outcome will be different. DMacks (talk) 15:22, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

Ok so if I make a video step by step making the picture, then will it be considered my property to give to wiki to use for his picture?

--Gene Zef2 (talk) 17:36, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

The diagram here illustrates the general flowchart for what is allowed. If the original video is actually yours and you agree to release it (or at least specific frames you choose from it) under a free license, it's probably safest to follow the Commons:Email_templates...you email your release and are given a tracking number. Once it gets processed, that number serves as verification of your emailed release (and can even be retroactive to previously deleted files, which can be easily restored). Diels-Reese Reaction and ChemDraw

I do not feel that the ChemDraw Image (File:Diels Reese.png) should be deleted nor marked for deletion. It is integral to the whole article. The Diels-Reese Reaction is an important reaction as several hetercyclic cores are build this way in production. If the scheme is deleted ... the article is destroyed. I do not have the tools to fix the scheme at this time. I would be happy to share the chemdraw file to fix any needed changes. --Slavefortheempire (talk) 02:11, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

I agree that something like this image is important for illustrating the reaction, that we do not seem to have any other images, and that this image is not scientifically/factually incorrect. That's why I only marked it as having problems which are only related to layout and improving its educational usefulness rather than for actual deletion. Possibly lost in the message on your talkpage about possible deletion is the key caveat "and if a better version exists"...that message probably needs some grammar cleanup.
I'd be happy to work on fixing it. Thanks for the offer of the CD file! Probably easier for me to redo it from scratch because there are lots of other layout nits as I look closely (font variations, unusual bond positions), and I'd be making major other layout changes anyway. File:P-hydroxymercuribenzoic acid.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Hello

I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.

Cheers,

Please remove deletation tag from the files: Old coin of Bangladesh.jpg, file:Map of Bangladesh.jpg and file:Dhaka Polytechnic Institute's title.logo.jpg

Hi, These file have no copyright issues. I upload them to use in Wikipedia for the importance to add picture. I'll use them in Bangladesh page and I used one to show the Bangladeshi Old coin. I don't want to promote myself. I have only this version of picture that I uploaded. Please release them to attache as free. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Md. They do not appear to meet our licensing standards. Much of what you just said here confirms that you do not have the appropriate licenses, and nothing refutes it. You are not allowed to upload a picture of someone else's work, even if you took a picture of it yourself and/or edited the image (and especially if you merely found it on the internet), unless that original work is also open-licensed.
