Accelrys DS Visualizer[edit]

Hi Karl,

I use DS Visualizer too. All you need to do is adjust your settings - lighting and rendering quality (set this to Ultra).

Follow the guidelines at en:User:Benjah-bmm27/MakingMolecules for details.

Sorry about that, I would have written explicitly how to set the rendering quality to ultra in the first message, but I don't have my PC with DS Visualizer on it here, it's back at university.

Hi again,

Your 3D models are looking great! Love it.

I saw that you updated from one conformer to another Image:Tetrahydrofuran-scaledBallAndStick.png - how come? The latest image looks higher in energy than the first. I've got a minimized structure from the Spartan database available at http://www.benjamin-mills.com/THF.pdb if you want to use it.

My fault about the PDB link - I forgot a folder! It should be http://www.benjamin-mills.com/molecular-models/THF.pdb

To rotate one molecule and not another, highlight the molecule you want to rotate (it will turn completely yellow). Then select the rotate tool and hold down control (I think) while you left-click.

Not sure about how to get allene-style double bonds to be orthogonal to one another. Try repeatedly clicking "minimize energy" until it looks right. A more realistic representation of cumulative double bonds involves molecular orbitals, but DSV doesn't do those. The HOMO of allene looks like this, apparently!

There are several free ChemDraw-type programs out there. Open-source molecule editors are listed at en:molecule editor.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
