Hey

Hey there. Just wanted to let you know I've nominated you for adminship. Good luck. :) –Juliancolton | Talk 01:20, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Sort keys for templates

Here's a tip: Use {{PAGENAME}} as the sort key so that if the template gets renamed it's still sorted correctly. Rocket000 (talk) 11:03, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Billinghurst/Archives, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons on irc.freenode.net. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators:#wikimedia-commons-admin.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Answer

I answerd here your question about the Titanic's stateroom, since I'm the one who asked for the rename. All other renames I asked for abot Titanic today are made on basis of the same book I mentionned on that page. Thanks. LittleTony87 (talk) 21:07, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I don't understand your remark on that talk page. Of course the name is disputed, that why it should be changed. Names of files should be descriptive, and this file's name is not descriptive but rather suggests a theory which includes accusations. This is why it disputed, and this is the reason for changing it. File names are not a "backdoor" through which one can introduce his opinions. Drork (talk) 00:37, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Not all, in fact most file names are not in dispute for a rename. I am saying that it is not primarily an administrator's task to resolve a disagreement about a name, and both parties will need to come to a mutually agreed name for the file as per Commons:File renaming. Both parties will need to work together to get a mutually agreeable name, or a name that is less disagreeable, and that meets the criteria, and one would agree that filenames should be factual and descriptive, not represent a POV, however there are two sides to a POV. I have left the rename template in place, if there is not going to be an agreement soon, then maybe I should remove it until the issue of the preferred name is resolved by the means available on the site. — billinghurst sDrewth 06:00, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Polish Scouts

Thank you for the renaming, but the new names have improper capitalization for proper names. Scout in this sense is always capitalized in English, and Golden Arrow is the title of the object the boys are holding. Please rename with proper caps, thank you! --Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 12:32, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Can do the arrow if you say that it is a proper noun, however, wikt:scouts (the people) are not a proper noun. The organisation would be, but not the people. I checked a couple of resources before making that change. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:50, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello. Thank you for uploading Image:Map of the Serbian lands 12th-13thC.jpg, however the license that you have uploaded it under has been deprecated. Please could you select a new free license that describes the rights of the image correctly? If you are not able to do this, the image will be deleted in 7 days.

For more information on licenses that can be used on Wikimedia Commons, please see Commons:Licensing. If you have any questions, please ask at the village pump. Thank you for your patience and consideration. This is an automatic message by Nikbot.--Filnik 05:20, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi, TX on informing me here as well as 'at home', and I'm hopeful you'll eventually agree.

I'll eventually agree only when it aligns to the criteria.

There is an other reason to contact you here: I more often than desirable see that we will not get good images from either professionals or instituions, due to bloody restrictions of copyright which in general are required by RuleZ. How do you think about suggesting some change?

I am the wrong person to pick for the politics of Commons. I am here to do some administrative tasks, not to set policy.

I mean, on enWP almost any relevant image can be used under terms of fair use. Such does not apply for most of the rest of the world.

Fair use is fair use as covered by legislation as by US and some other countries. It is not about a policy decision, it is about legislative compliance.

How about suggesting, for COM, an until now not-yet existing "copyrighted, but only allowed for non-commercial use"-tag? I am more than convinced that such would be by far more accepted by possible 'donators' of images than the actual minimum, which is cc-by-sa and allows almost unrestricted commercial use. (I had initiated {{Pink CC}} on this, a while ago, but with very little success: from ~20 trials to ask for good photogrphs, ~18 would be without answer at all. ONE of ~20 addressed persons would eventually agree to 'donate' ONE file, or a few ones, low-res, of course). My questions are:

  1. Would you support such suggestion?
  2. Where to ask for such? Of course, COM:VP might be one place, but I imagine there might be better ones.
Village pump is the place to start that discussion.

From average enWP-users, not much support will be to be expected: The problem for them just does not exist, due to anyways possible 'fair use'. -- [w.] 09:26, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Delete image

I would like this image I uploaded deleted. This is because of copyright. I didn't know the djvu text was only copyrighted in the US. When I looked at the author's page, it said their works were in the public domain in areas 70 years or less. But it was only when I saw the source file of the text on Commons after I uploaded the image that it was not in the public domain in the UK. Thank you. --Angelprincess72 (talk) 16:27, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Angelprincess72. The photo is a derivative a book that is out of copyright in your country, so should be fine (author died 1939), further, I believe that the more relevant copyright date would be 1927 being the death year of George Gordon Macrae who is the photographer. In summary, the photo is okay, and so should be any derivative works from the book. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:51, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Re: File renaming

I understand that we don't translate names, usually, but what in case of changing them from into the most popular alphabet AND removing a bunch of useless symbols (!!!, useless numbers, etc.)? Also, I see some files were already renamed: File:True Temple in Japan (2006).jpg. Per standardization, we should rename all of those !!!kanjinumbers into something more useful. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 22:18, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Original language in the description, and the tenet of not favouring English. Is there a problem with the name?  — billinghurst sDrewth 06:19, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Yes because was name by digital camera. More people know English than Italian language. No reason to no rename to english name. --Starscream (talk) 10:02, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
The guidelines are there so as to not show bias to any language, and to look to keep the natural language of the contributor, and that is what has been done. Does it cause a problem? If you believe that the guidelines are wrong, then that conversation can be started on the respective talk page.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:36, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
The guidelines prohibit the transmutation of non-English names to English name. Not prohibit the transformation of names by a digital cameras to the most rationality. Now it's too late. Happy? --Starscream (talk) 10:42, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Goodness gracious, understand the principle, which is clear. The image is there, and the name appears in both Italian and English in the description, and is clearly findable under the English http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&search=park+aleppo&fulltext=Search

If you can understand Chinese, you can see that the editor made an obvious mistake when he used [4]as a source. Actually, as he did not understand Chinese very well, he used another paragraph of the introduction in that link to name this photo. However, in the link you can find the caption of this photo as below:
1937年7月31日,发表声明要求国民党政府停止内战、与红军谈判、建立统一的抗日政权的中华全国各界救国联合会领导人沈钧儒、邹韬奋、李公朴、沙千里、史良、章乃器、王造时“七君子”在上海获释。 图为(左起)王造时、史良、章乃器、沈钧儒、沙千里、李公朴、邹韬奋的资料照片。 新华社发
You can see the time: 7-31-1937, 26 years later than the 1st National Congress of the Communist Party of China. This photo is about another famous incident in China, named '七君子之狱' or '七君子事件'('Seven Gentlemen Incident'). On July 31, 1937, the seven people (including one woman, named 史良Shi Liang) were discharged from prison.
As you can see, the correct name of this photo should be 'Seven Gentlemen7-31-1937.jpg'. Sgsg (talk) 01:11, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

The issue is that for such a significant change, there should be an evidence-base to support the change. We will put that information onto the talk page, and that should be sufficient, and I don't understand Chinese language.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:20, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
I think this is really significant, because it is a very obvious mistake made by the editor. If you can not understand the caption in the source (provided by the original editor) of this photo, please see here(the website of Central Government of China),here(Xinhua News Agency),here (the Communist Party of China), here, here, here, here. I think I have provide enough evidence. Sgsg (talk) 01:44, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

A question about CommonsDelinker

Hi. I am a new admin and still may not know something. I closed DR on File:HLHimmler.jpg and added a command on User:CommonsDelinker/commands, but the to-be-deleted file is still used in many projects. What I did wrong? --Blacklake (talk) 17:12, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Welcome to ointment ranks (definite word play on anointed). You did nothing wrong, the beast is down, and we are going to need to wait for Bryan, Siebrand or Multichill to appear to unstick it. :-( Apart from looking at the contributions of the various operating accounts, do look at http://toolserver.org/~delinker/index.php, though do note that all seems to have their level of flakiness.  — billinghurst sDrewth 17:19, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Okay. The file is to be deleted only after the bot corrects all the links, isn't it? --Blacklake (talk) 17:22, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Yes. Theoretically we could delete, add a redirect, and run the bot later, however, we have waited from what I have seen. FWIW the file was a migration from enWP (and one that shouldn't have happened), so I have been over there and undeleted it there.  — billinghurst sDrewth 17:42, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Would you mind taking a look at this deletion request: Commons:Deletion requests/Some illustrations from Rothschild's Extinct Birds? —innotata 19:57, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Damn shame, if the response comes out delete, we are going to need to work out how to migrate. We can inhale the wrappers for the files, though unfortunately we need to upload the files individually. There is no currently available means to have the services copy them over. :-(  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:07, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Move from Commons

Hi,

On a technical POV:

  • Here is the Pywikipediabot script I use.
  • And the right you really need to use it is reupload-shared, you have to see on the project you want to upload files on which user group has it (it is not the same on every project).

Otherwise, be careful with Licensing policy and non-free content (but of course you already are aware of this). Regards. --Coyau (talk) 16:43, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

dupes

Why did you deny them? They were orphaned and replacable by the other images I specified. Aavindraa (talk) 08:14, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

I see that you got me on a technicality-- they aren't EXACT byte for byte duplicates. But surely you know what I mean. They're orphaned, low quality images. Why bother wasting space with them? I've nominated them for speedy deletion and left the description. Aavindraa (talk) 08:20, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
There is nothing to stop them being replaced by the better quality images, and processes exist for that. Then it comes to using the process designated which is {{Delete}}. Why that process? Community's decision on what is the process, not mine, I am just the wikignome.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:12, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
I figured as much. I've used the speedy delete templates and one has already been deleted by another user. This one still needs deletion. But still, you could've surmised what I was trying to do, right? Whatever, I know which template to use now. Aavindraa (talk) 01:19, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
You may believe that you are doing things for the right reason, however, one should understand that one's opinion on a wiki is just that. We have processes to get to a collective decision, and they should be used, not attempted to be circumvented. Speedies are for where there is a clear decision to be made in an unequivocal situation, not the enforcement of an opinion.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:53, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

The work was made available to the public? When? Where? The Uploader seems to make a difference between scan from foto and scan from book. As far as I understood, Scnas from foto are pictures of unknown authors found in private archives. I don't think this one has ever been published. --Martina Nolte (talk) 17:02, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Well, we are then in a bit of a quandary. We therefore have no licence to cover works by anonymous people that are more than 70 years old which then puts them into the public domain. It is my understanding that in the EU where works were unpublished they come into the public domain 70 years from creation. [5] This work is approx. 100 years old.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:50, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Created 1910 really seems old, but the author could quiet well have been alive only 30 years later (1940) so that his creation is still not free. --Martina Nolte (talk) 18:24, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
I have started the conversation at Template talk:Anonymous-EU to get either dual wording, or the ability to swap words in and out per published/unpublished.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:01, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. More there. --Martina Nolte (talk) 18:24, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

File:Spix Reiseatlas original 55.jpg

Hi! You deleted File:Spix Reiseatlas original 55.jpg for being a dupe of File:Spix Reiseatlas original 54.jpg. I do not believe they were exact dupes and, more bad,the dupe you deleted was in use in our project page and suddenly one file disappeared. Please undel it. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 14:04, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

I was following up a replacement by another admin. I have rechecked the images, and they are both page 27, and the images were of the same height, width and file size, both state that they are original images, and neither says that they are derivative of another image, so that all seems like duplicates to me. If there are differences in the files, then we can recover, and to that I would ask that there be precise labelling to the files to indicate that multiples are meant to exist and the differences between the files. The policy is that exact duplicates can be speedy deleted, so very useful to appropriately identify variances in the same images.
To the replacement itself checking the logs, I see
  • 10:02, 22 November 2010 . . CommonsDelinkerHelper (talk | contribs | block) (706 bytes) (This image has been replaced by Spix_Reiseatlas_original_54.jpg)
and it is my practice to check global usage to see whether it had worked, so if I missed it my apologies.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:32, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Hi again. In case you understand German: here is the talk with the other admin
We are currently working on these images in the graphists workshop in dewp. And since is is a big batch (a hole book) we cannot do all at once. Restore it - I will merge it with the other. Then I will give you a note so you can delete.
The Commonsdelinker is disallowed (it will skip this page) in graphists workshop in dewp for such this reason which happend here: we want to see if an image gets deleted.
All images have been reworked but are only tagged in the file history. A {{RetouchedPicture}} in the file description will be added in the next days.

Licence

Did you mean File:Erithacus rubecula -Canary Islands, Spain -juvenile-8.jpg? The copyright licence is on flickr and is clearly suitable for commons. The "©" on the image has little meaning when the image is actually released under a creative commons licence. Snowmanradio (talk) 18:06, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

The file is moved to File:Erithacus rubecula -Canary Islands, Spain -adult-8 (2).jpg, because it had a bad name. This and the other images from the same flickr photo-set that you deleted should be reinstated. Snowmanradio (talk) 18:15, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

I undeleted a few files

Hi. As a response to User_talk:MGA73#About_a_deleted_files_from_flickr I undeleted a few files you deleted. A (c) is not a problem. It just tells that the user has the copyrights. If the user chooses to release the file under a free license it is ok - user has the copyright and can do as (s)he pleases :-) --MGA73 (talk) 19:12, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
