Territorial dispute?[edit]

Hi, I've just put a question on the talk page regarding the map of territorial disputes in Europe you have uploaded. I'm Dutch, and I'm not aware of any territorial disputes we have with our neighbours. (The only thing that comes to mind is that the Dutch-Belgian border at the point were the Netherland, Belgium and Germany meet was found out to have been drawn incorrectly a few years ago. But it only involved some 20 square meters, and since it meant that the Belgians had paid a bit too much for the reconstruction of a joint road, we decided not to press the matter.;)) I'd be interested in learning more about this! Best regards, MartinD 08:52, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hoi, I figured something out and left a message on the talk-page. Hope it helps. Bamse 08:27, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It does, thx! See my reply there. MartinD 12:06, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quick Question; Could you tell me your full name? I'd like to use the map of the African Elephant's distribution, but I have to put the site/person who I got it from.

Könntest Du in dieser wunderbaren Karte noch den deutschen Alternativnamen zu Falklandinseln ergänzen, die Malwinen. Danke! Dies würde der Neutralität der Wikipedia zuträglich sein. --ALE! ¿…? 20:17, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm working on a geolocation\mapping project on hebrew wikipedia, and this image (that based on your image File:Parks Tanzania.svg) is better than the one we use so far (File:Tanzania Locator.png). The only problem is that I need the geographic limits of this map and to know if it uses Equirectangular projection, or other projection. Thanks, GilCahana (talk) 01:10, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, for the map I used gmt with the following options -JM34.85/-6.25/24c -R28.8/-12.5/40.9/0.0r . That should be a Mercator projection with a central Meridian at 34.85 and a standard parallel at -6.25 (see here). The geographic limits are (28.8,-12.5) for the lower left and (40.9,0) for the upper right corner of the map. (see for instance here under "-R"). All numbers are in degree and "-" is south of the equator of course. I don't know much about geographic projections. Please let me know if you need anything else. I noticed that you still have the outlines of the national parks in the locator map. Is that on purpose?bamse (talk) 12:22, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information, it's all I need. As for the outlines in the location map you should ask user:Obersachse who made the map, I think he just forgot to remove some of them because he removed some. But I think this map is fine with those outlines. Thanks, GilCahana (talk) 15:42, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Bamse!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Lizense of Harz_map.svg[edit]

Hi Bamse, I am working on an information site for my parents website (www.pension-gruene-insel.de). I would like to use your maps, but the gnu license is difficult to implement on websites. I publish everything under free licenses (see my user page in german wikipedia (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benutzer:Lanzi) and my free schoolbooks here (www.hoffmeister.it). Would be nice if you contact me or if you relicensed under a doubble license GNU & CC-BY-SA. Thanks for your time Lanzi (talk) 10:13, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Glück Auf Lanzi (talk) 02:38, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fehlender Hintergrund Harz_map.svg[edit]

Permission to use a map of yours[edit]

16th of March 2009 Hi Bamse, I'm surrently working on a British TV show called It's Only a Theory and we are hoping to use a map of your (the suicide rates map of the world) on the show. Although the picture is under Wikipedia Commons license, we still need to get your personal permission to use it. We are working to a very tight deadline at the moment so please could I ask you to reply as soon as possible. Thanks you very much. My email address is andyl(at)hattrick.com.

Update world suicide map?[edit]

Hi,

according to the source you cite for your world suicide rate map, Germany should be in yellow, not red (and maybe others, I didn't check). You might want to update it.

Sadly, I didn't find any figure backing up that fact (males and females being distinguished in the figures available). —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.224.79.17 (talk) 19 March 2009, 13:48 (UTC)

Gnuplot asin[edit]

I'm wondering how you got gnuplot to plot arcsin (asin) all the way from -1 to 1. (Whenever I plot arcsin, it starts just after -1 and ends just before 1. It's really quite annoying.) Zeroparallax (talk) 06:13, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I figured it out by looking at another person's image and code (Qualc1, here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arcsin_plot.svg ). I just had to increase the set number of sample points (set sample 10000). I think it would be a good thing to include your gnuplot source code like Qualc1 does, and I'll try to do the same if I ever post my images for distribution. Thanks for providing the beautiful images! Zeroparallax (talk) 17:45, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You might want to correct your FPC nomination page for this image. Your FPC nomination page has the heading ===:Extermination of Evil===. If should have the actual file name which is File:Extermination of Evil Shōki.jpg so it should read ===:File:Extermination of Evil Shōki.jpg===. If you want it to read Extermination of Evil then just add a pipe so it would be ===Extermination of Evil=== I am voting support, BTW. --Captain-tucker (talk) 01:05, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ancient Japan Sculptures[edit]

Since I was off, I reply, today. About Asyura in Kofukuji, all copyright free pictures I have are in Category Art_of_the_Nara_period. About Kudara Kannon, I have uploaded 4 images: Kudara_kannon_1.JPG Kudara_kannon_2.JPG, Kudara_kannon_3.JPG, Kudara_kannon_Halo.jpg. I cannot get any colour copyright free image, but have another monochrome pictures. ReijiYamashina (talk) 23:35, 22 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I will upload several pictures in category Statues in Japan and National Treasures of Japan this year. Kudara Kannon description in [List of National Treasures of Japan (sculptures)] is not correct. The wood is proper to Japan, not exist in Korea. The nickname :Kudara(old name of Packce kingdom in korea) Kannon was created by late 19th century japan scholars. The name has misled for many years. ReijiYamashina (talk) 00:40, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Two images added. The 'corean artizans' in your caption is a plausible hypothesis. In encyclopedia, I think that we should make an effort to describe only fact and remark hypothesis, suppositions amd attributions clearly.

ReijiYamashina (talk) 23:04, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm preparing some images. Date(1186-1189) of Six Patriarchs of the Hossō sect in your list(sculptures) belongs to Heian Period. Indeed the sculptor is in Kei school, and the style seems Kamakura style. and these statue are usually classfied to Kamakura style scultupures, the date is the last part of Heian period.ReijiYamashina (talk) 02:47, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've added one. I become off for trip to Tokyo and more.ReijiYamashina (talk) 01:36, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

National Treasures of Japan (Others)[edit]

I've added better images of paintings : Blue Fudo ShorenIn.JPG and ‎ Arhat 12m.JPG ReijiYamashina (talk) 23:18, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

About the images in Tokyo National Museum's site, I feel too dark. I've asked the museum to improve them. I feel another buddha paintings in this site should be too dark. Images belonged to other categories(EMAKIMONO, Ink paintings etc) be normal. I appreciated the original several times in the museum. My memory suggests my picture be better. I referece FIVE books including color plates of them (the editors are National Cultural Agency, National Museum, Asahi Newspaper). All support my opinion.

ReijiYamashina (talk) 08:36, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

At 7th of November, I searched one of 16 Arhats itself in Tokyo National Museum gallery. Surely, the color images in website are too dim. The color is light verge. I cannot understand such careless color modification in the official website. I asked the museum to correct them. ReijiYamashina (talk) 01:09, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I added your lighter image to the painting list a while ago.bamse (talk) 16:53, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Bamse, Your image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lotus_Sutra_Expedient_Means.jpg is not Lotus sutra but "Illustrated stories about the boy Sudhana's pilgrimage to 55 deities and saints" or "KEGON 55 site pligrim"or"ZENZAI-doji emaki". You have already upped in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_National_Treasures_of_Japan_(paintings). ref japanese site: http://www9.plala.or.jp/bunkaz/object/a1/a1i.html. This image is correct. http://www.tnm.jp/jp/servlet/Con?processId=00&ref=2&Q1=&Q2=&Q3=&Q4=________511__&Q5=&F1=&F2=&pageId=E15&colid=B2401 Unfortunately The http://www.emuseum.jp/ has clearly mistaken. I have emailed to ask correction to the Institue.--ReijiYamashina (talk) 01:23, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot. It seemed too little text for being a sutra. Do you know if the emuseum image is the Tōdai-ji national treasure (painting)? Or is it cut off fragment of the same scroll as the Tōdai-ji scroll? I'll change the image for the correct image in the writings list. bamse (talk) 10:12, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The scroll is not the National treasure handscroll in Todaiji, I missed it really. Doubtfully, the emuseum scroll shares same scenes with the Todaiji's scroll. Hence it isn't a cutting of that. I don't specify the handscroll. Perhaps, a fragment of another old version of the painting handscroll.--ReijiYamashina (talk) 23:34, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Thank you. bamse (talk) 00:41, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm off somedays. About the image of Murasaki Shikibu Diary Emaki, I don't know the provenance and background, because it is/was belong to private coll. The date 1503 is a mystery. If so, it seems a later copy. Since Morikawa family is famous japanese art collector family, it looks like a fragment of 13th work. the Murasaki Shikibu Diary Emaki scrolls have become fragments and short scroll, and been preserved 3 museums and collectors. Only some are resigned designed to National Treaures. Others may be resigned deesigned to Important properties.I will check it again.--ReijiYamashina (talk) 07:24, 23 December 2011 (UTC)--ReijiYamashina (talk) 07:48, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Searching some in a library, the image should be a part of Morikawa edition 21cm height, 38cm wide (total 73.7cm wide). ref. Nihon emaki taisei vol 9th Murasaki shikibu nikki ekotoba edited by KOMATSU SHIGEMI. The date 1503 may be a misunderstanding. I add one image in Category:Murasaki Shikibu Diary Emaki (Hinohara edition) and one of KORIN BOXof national Tresure.--ReijiYamashina (talk) 07:48, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The original size of your image(painting+ 7lines) is about 21cm height 38cm wide. The Morikawa one is longer than your image. The former part has more 14 lines calligraphy. Suicide map[edit]

Wondering what year of data this map is based on? File:Suicide rates map.svg Found a data set here for 2008 http://www.who.int/mental_health/prevention/suicide_rates/en/index.html Any chance you could update it? Any maybe remove Antarctica? Thanks--Jmh649 (talk) 03:02, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I created the original map on 16 April 2007 using data from the WHO that was available at the time. Later, in 2009, I updated a few countries (see the File history at the bottom of the image description page). Are you aware, that the "2008 data" on the link you provided are not data sets for the year 2008 but rather a list of suicide rates published by the WHO in 2008. The actual year the data were gathered differs from country to country and can be much before 2008. List of countries by suicide rate seems to be updated frequently with the most recent WHO data. Have a look at the "year" column, the data is always from before 2008. If you notice any discrepancies between the map and the WHO data, I can update the map for the respective country. I am not going to remove Antarctica, as this would mean redoing the map with another map projection (=too much work). bamse (talk) 08:39, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kegon Engi Emaki[edit]

Hello,

Yes, I'm pretty sure of that ; in fact, there is two parts in this emaki: one about Gisho and another about Gengyo. The first part was probably realised before 1223, and the second part maybe ten or fifteen years later (according to Karen L. Brock, Tales of Gishō and Gangyō: editor, artist, and audience in Japanese picture scrolls). Also, the pictorial style is not so different: you can perceive the same Song influence and the pale light colors.

At last, you can check the thesis of Chan Yuk Yue (Hong Kong University, link), because he rebuilds all the six scrolls in the appendix (pages 113-116).

I must recognise that the quality of these pictures is not satisfying (except for the dragon's scene, one of the most beautiful)... Binabik (d) 18:45, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

PS if you can read French, take a look at my article on this emaki : Rouleaux enluminés des fondateurs de la secte Kegon.

Thanks for the reply. Indeed they seem to be from the same scroll. bamse (talk) 11:36, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Graphic Designer's Barnstar

Hello Bamse, thank you very much for translating this map. I will correct errors as soon as possible (it's in my todo list, and the translation in japanese is, too). No problem with the svg code ? I remember this map is a little bit heavy... Have a good day. Bourrichon (talk) 14:26, 27 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of file usage[edit]

Dear Bamse,

thank you for sharing your work on Wikimedia. I used your maps of Espanola, San Cristobal, Floreana, Santa Cruz, Santiago, and Genovesa as illustrations in my book about Galapagos. The book will be distributed through Amazon and should be available in the US and the UK at the beginning of 2018. Please let me know if you wanted to know more.

Thank you again for your brilliant work!

Kind regards,

Josef — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jl photo (talk • contribs) 13:03, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Josef: Thanks for letting me know. Would appreciate a link to the book when it is available. bamse (talk) 19:52, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Silver Fern Image Usage[edit]

Hi Bamse

I'm just wondering if you are ok with the Silver Fern image you created being used as part of the cover of a log book I am drawing up for my work colleges and I to use? If it is ok with you is there is any attribution you require?

Thanks

It is fine with me. No attribution required. Would appreciate if you could sent me a picture of the cover when it is ready. bamse (talk) 22:48, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. Many thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jrwsmith (talk • contribs) 10:02, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

File:African Elephant distribution map.svg[edit]

Hello.

Can you add South Sudan in File:African Elephant distribution map.svg you uploaded and as well as in File:Distribution M. tricuspis.png, File:Distribution M. tricuspis.svg, File:Distribution P. aurata.svg, File:Distribution G. senegalensis.svg, File:Distribution P. africanus.svg?

I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files on 1 March 2018, now it is reduced to less than 670 maps, but there is a long way to go.

Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps myself, that is why I asked you.

Kindest regards.

Hello. Can you add the border of South Sudan in all of these maps. Thank you. Maphobbyist (talk) 10:07, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

File:Dadao map 1939.svg requires updating[edit]

Hi Bamse,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Dadao map 1939.svg is out of date. Saipan was part of the Japanese Empire in 1939 and not part of the USA yet. Could you update it? Thanks again. Geographyinitiative (talk) 17:27, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I updated the map and changed Saipan and Rota island to be Japanese. Please check if that's correct. bamse (talk) 20:04, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
