Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hello. I am neither the creator of the files (who might ask for the deletion) nor an administrator (who could actually delete them), so I am not the good person to help you. At least I can tell you the way to follow.
As you happen to be the creator of the files, just add this tag on your file : {{speedydelete|Arrow direction is wrong}}. An administrator will see it and delete it afterwards, or contact you to know more.

Re: Migration map

Yes, MediaWiki is really a scrap when rendering text. The solution I found is to copy those texts, transform them into paths as you did which will serve for the display and hide the original texts in a layer bellow the map. This way you keep a clean display as well as the power of the SVG format for easy translation with the hidden labels. The file size will be a bit heavier but I think it's a small counterpart. Categorization

Thank you for uploading old Josephinische Landaufnahme maps into Wikimedia Commons. However, you placed these maps into wrong categories such are "Maps of geographical regions of Serbia" or "Maps of ethnic groups in Romania". Currently, I am removing these files from these categories, leaving them only in "Josephinische Landaufnahme" category, which is a subcategory of several other categories. You should be careful with categorization, especially if you upload so many new files into wrong categories because other users then would spend much of free time trying to clean these categories from files that do not belong there. There are separate categories for all kinds of maps here: "modern maps", "historical maps", "old maps", "ethnic maps", etc, etc, and maps that you uploaded are clearly "old maps", not "maps of modern geographical regions" or "maps of ethnic groups". In the future, if you want to upload more old maps of this kind, please create a separate category for them (like "Josephinische Landaufnahme" category) and then make this category to be a subcategory of categories "Old maps of Serbia", "Old maps of Romania", etc, but please do not include these files into unrelated categories. Daca intrebi de originile sale, a fost pictat in 1600, fiind unul dintre steagurile cucerite de Mihai Viteazul in lupta de la Guraslau si trimise imparatului Rudolf II. Harti

Da, harta aia chiar e comunista la modul cel mai serios. Poti sa pui linistit si un portret de-al lui Ceasca intr-un colt undeva :)

Eu intetionez sa ma apuc sa lucrez la un atlas istoric al Romaniei, dar totul inca este in faza de proiect, de strangere de fonduri, de gasit colaboratori etc. Ma gandeam sa folosesc hartile iozefine care acopera principalele orase ale Transilvaniei, Banatului si Partiumului (Alba Iulia, Sibiu, Brasov, Cluj, Oradea, Arad si Timisoara) ca sa fac cu ajutorul Inkscape niste harti-anexe ale acestor orase in sec. 18. Vad ca totul e in domeniul public, deci nu vor fi probleme cu licenta. Oricum meriti felicitari pentru toata munca pe care ai depus-o cu hartile iozefine!

Am sa incerc si eu sa mai imbunatatesc harta Daciei, sper sa am timp sa termin saptamana asta.

Salut Ovidiu,

Well, totul e inca in faza de proiect. Doar ca mai multi istorici cu care am vorbit (la Sibiu si Cluj) au zis ca e nevoie acuta de un atlas istoric al Romaniei reactualizat in conformitate cu toate materialele care au aparut dupa 1989. Deci trebuie neaparat ca niste teme ceva mai controversate sa fie tratate intr-un astfel de atlas: continuitatea daco-romana (care se pare ca a fost limitata doar la zona muntilor Apuseni si la extremitatea sudica a Banatului), Imperiul Roman si apoi Imperiul Roman de Rasarit in perioda cat au fost conduse de imparati latinofoni din zona Balcanilor (cca. 250-600), apoi vlahiile balcanice si colonizarile cu romani pe granita Transilvaniei in sec. 12-14 (in zona Severin, Hateg, Fagaras, Nasaud, Maramures), Transnistria in perioda 1924-1944, rezistenta anticomunista din anii '50-'60 etc. etc.

Eu sper sa termin atlasul pana la anul pe vremea asta, oricum pana atunci am sa-ti trimit si cateva mostre de harti aflate inca in lucru, numai sa-mi dai o adresa de mail.

Harta Transilvaniei

Imi pare rau ca a durat atat, dar uite ca am gasit niste timp sa ma ocup de harta reliefului Transilvaniei. Am pus o varianta png aici: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Transilvania_relief.png

Chestia e ca din cauza marimii fisierului mi s-a blocat Inkscape de cateva ori. Sunt aproape sigur ca o varianta vectoriala ar crea probleme destul de serioase de vizualizare in media wiki asa ca nici nu prea ar avea rost sa incarc si un svg. Sper ca te descuri cu png-ul, daca nu am sa incerc sa-ti trimit svg-ul prin transfer.ro

Harta Tinutului Secuiesc

Asybaris, daca ti se pare ceva in neregula la harta aia, mai bine scrie pe pagina de discutie a imaginii inainte sa faci tu modificari fara sa ma intrebi si pe mine. Si in orice caz autonomie, indiferent de criteriile pe baza carora se face, nu este egal cu separare de Romania. Hi,
I've transferred your 3D images and animated images gallery from page File:Muntii Fagarasului, harta turistica si a reliefului.jpg to page Munţii Făgăraş. It should have a wider audience there, and be less annoying when you access to the map page.

hello, there is a discussion about this subject on the french village pump for commons. Seems ther is something related to uncompressed image size : uncompressed image must be less than 22 Mpixels.

World Imagery

What do you mean with "World Imagery", this source is unclear. If you mean ArcGIS then the texture of your files is not free by default but most likely unfree (=Commons:Project scope#Required licensing terms is not fulfilled) and not ok to upload here. Only those portions of World Imagery created by NASA is public domain, the rest isnt. You have to provide verifiable evidence that the portions you use are created by NASA. --Martin H. In general the main portion of your files is satellite imagery, provide sources for that. The information related to the data sources is of secondary interest, the satellite pictures you use are not your own work and no verifiable source is provided that it is free. --Martin H. I mean, if I license for Global Mapper that automatically extracts texture World Imagery can not use it? It is a mistake somewhere. ~ ~ ~ ~
