Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open!

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear AntiCompositeNumber,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

Thanks,

Your VFC installation method is deprecated

Hello AntiCompositeNumber, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:23, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Hello

Here is the link you asked for:

WhatsUpWorld (talk) 16:16, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

Hello WhatsUpWorld! Thank you for providing that link, I have added it to the applicable image pages. Unfortunately, it does not fix the problem. The terms of use for that website state that all content except images and user-generated content is Creative Commons. Therefore, I have tagged both images for speedy deletion. Please let me know if you have any questions, or if you have more information about the copyright status of the images. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:25, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

Your SVG contributions

Hi ACN, thank you for drawing SVG versions from raster images!
When you do so, please give this new file the same name (except the extension, of course); make from e.g. Open materials large gray.png a file "Open materials large gray.svg" but not a Open materials large gray-(vector).svg. Many templates like Vector version available (NowSVG), Raster version available or AutVec can work without the other-file-name parameter when you abstain from that useless change of the names. Replacement will also be easier with same names. -- sarang사랑 11:04, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

@Sarang: I was planning to do that, but MediaWiki throws an error and I couldn't force it through with Commonist. 12 files is a bit above my limit for dealing with Special:Upload. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 13:02, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
Oh, and in case it wasn't clear: those SVGs were extracted from an .eps on the same source. I didn't draw them. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 13:04, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

Image Vectorization

Hi, you vectorized a diagram (.png) that I drew for a Wikipedia article (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Whitworth_Thread.png). How'd you manage to do that? Did you have to draw it again from scratch; or is there a special technique for vectorizing raster images? I actually tried tracing it with Inkscape myself. The new file (.svg) was an improvement, but not as sharp as yours. Anyway, if you could let me know, it might help me improve the quality of my contributions in the future. Thanks. --Tjt263 (talk) 11:51, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

@Tjt263: I redrew that image using Inkscape's vector drawing tools. The autotrace function is not very reliable, always needs cleanup, and works best on simple, high-contrast images. Help:SVG is a great place to start, and w:Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Resources/SVG also has a few more resources. Dealing with Inkscape usually ends up with playing around with various settings until things look about right, so there's no substitute for trying things out. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 01:41, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

You are apparently he designated contact for the OTRS ticket on File:Judith Weinshall Liberman.png. I am assisting User:George David NH , who is working on w: Draft: Judith Weinshall Liberman , where this image is currently used. Is there any additional information or authorization needed on this, or is it just a matter of waiting until all the Is are dotted? Please advise. DESiegel (talk) 20:23, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

@DESiegel: While I did originally intend to work the ticket for those files, I am not currently handling it due to a lack of time on my side. The ticket is currently sitting in the backlog, waiting for another OTRS agent to look at it. The current backlog for Commons permission tickets is about 7 days, this ticket is 2210 days ago old. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 20:37, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

✓ Done. The Dunkin' logo without the coffee cup image is clearly in the public domain because it is below the threshold of originality in the United States. It is now available on Commons as File:Dunkin' logo.svg. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 00:30, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

Logos

Hi, it would be interesting if you upload the file Looktv_logo.svg here on commons in SVG to use them on different wikis to replace the file File:Look logo.png, you could name it Look logo.svg.

Another file to upload here in SVGis Eatons_Logo.svg to replace File:Eaton's logo.png, and you should name it Eaton's logo.svg.

Thank you to do that because I don’t know how to upload logos in SVG.✋😀--35.221.198.213 09:41, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

Hello, it's going wrong, see File:Ganzeville_(Seine-Mar.) église, statue 016 Saint_Lubin.jpg . The bot hasn't excluded {{Location estimated}}. I checked petscan, there is not yet exclusion of {{Location estimated}} so I made a new petscan https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=10933583 with new petscanID psid=10933583 and that scan seems correct. Hello, the bot runs good. Thanks. --Havang(nl) (talk) 07:46, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Almost finished, but probably this modif stopped the bot. I adapted in the fikle location into objet location and you may continue for the last few hundred files. Thanks a lot. --Havang(nl) (talk) 10:52, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
The bot appears to have stopped because it ran out of data from PetScan. This is probably due to planned maintainance on Toolforge. I've restarted the bot so it can finish up the last 230 files or so. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 15:55, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
@Havang(nl): The bot has finished and PetScan reports no more files. Unless you see any issues, I'm ready to call this one ✓ Done. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 21:07, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 210K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 40 countries around the world.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2019.

Kind regards,

Congratulations, dear license reviewer

If you use the helper scripts, you will find the links next to the search box (vector) or as single tabs (monobook). They are named license+ and license-.

Hi AntiCompositeNumber, thanks for your request for license reviewer status. The request has been closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Majora/LicenseReview.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

Important: thou shalt not review thy own uploads, nor those of anyone closely related to you!

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.freenode.net. You can also add {{User license reviewer}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! — Tulsi Bhagat (contribs | talk) 04:40, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

Warning sign
This media was probably deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Blaze Pizza's Artisan Pizza.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Blaze Pizza's Artisan Pizza.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Praxidicae (talk) 16:40, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

Hallo AntiCompositeNumber, sorry for my bad english, but you deleted the Categorie bei the Tools made by Holmatro, but Holmatro isn't only a rescu tool manufacturer, sie also en:Holmatro. The same situation is with Weber-Hydraulic, see e.g https://www.weber-hydraulik.com/en/ -In your system, both companies can produce only rescue tools not other hydraulic parts. lg K@rl (talk) 19:35, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

@Karl Gruber: For Holmatro, you can add other categories for other products. I changed the category because Holmatro is not a hydraulic rescue tool, it is a manufacturer of hydraulic rescue tools. For Weber-Hydraulic, we can only categorize the photos that exist. Weber-Hydrualic now sells their rescue equipment under Weber-Rescue, so it makes the most sense to put the rescue equipment images there. There are no non-rescue Weber images on Commons, so the category would have been deleted if I did not redirect it. --20:28, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
All these companies produce hydraulic tools generally, not only rescue tools, e.g cylinders, cutters and so on. If you get a photo from the company itself, you cannot categoryze in your system. -K@rl (talk) 21:18, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
@Karl Gruber: You misunderstand. The change I made to Holmatro does not change the meaning of the categorization. Holmatro is not a hydraulic rescue tool, it is a hydraulic rescue tool manufacturer. The change is more selective and modular per COM:CAT. If you want to show that Holmatro produces other things, add those categories. Do not remove valid categories. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:37, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

@Sfoltito: Thank you. How do you know that the file is covered by the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license? I don't see anything on the source page to support that. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 15:36, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

To tell the truth, I uploaded this file the first time, to add it to the homonymous [page], as an alternative to another file already present on the same page of the English edition. I did it because I couldn't insert the first image of the character in question.

Just like that file was not penalized in any way, the same should apply to this. ~Sfoltito (talk) 15:43, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

@Sfoltito: Wikimedia Commons only accepts images that have been released under a free license by their author or have entered the public domain. When you upload an image created by someone else, you must provide evidence that it is public domain or has been released under a free license so that anyone can use it, for any reason. Please see COM:Licensing and COM:First steps. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 17:38, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

The image was not created by any author alive today. I spelled out the site from which I took the image via URL and I entered the same site in the field: "Author (s)".

Wikimedia Commons did not give this type of problem - which is used for a fairly important project - and I don't understand why it should do it right now. ~Sfoltito (talk) 17:45, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

@Sfoltito: Under current law, works are usually protected for 70 years after the death of the author. There are some cases where this rule does not apply, but you have to provide evidence for those situations. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 17:57, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

It may be true, but it certainly cannot be said that I have violated copyright. I have doubly cited the site from which I took the file and if one exists, the image is automatically in the public domain.

Other than that, in my opinion you are going a little too heavy with the addition of notices regarding possible copyright infringements ... no other user had penalized the files I uploaded so much and I doubt they have seen them in lot of. ~Sfoltito (talk) 18:15, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

@Sfoltito: Not everything you find online is in the public domain. Please read Commons:NETCOPYVIO, Commons:First steps, and Commons:Licensing. Do not upload any images you did not create yourself until you have a better understanding of Commons policy and copyright. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 18:19, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

In any case, I have made explicit the author and the source from which the image originates. Questioning copyright, regardless of the policies of Commons, seems to me exaggerated. ~Sfoltito (talk) 18:30, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

Respectfully, you have misunderstood the entire purpose of Commons. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 18:34, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

User talk:Moneytrees

Thanks for reverting me here. You've made me realise that someone with an incomplete mastery of the English language, or a moron, could easily mistundertand a conditional statement, a statement of fact, and a piece of advice from one Admin to another, as a personal attack. Meanwhile, as I face death in the face directly, and that is without Covid-19, I'll just say this: I don't want to die leaving an undeserved slur on my reputation. That is what I am fighting for in the limited time I have left. Thanks. Rodhullandemu (talk) 23:21, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Personal attacks and incivility aren't acceptable here nor on any Wikimedia wiki. If you're in a situation where you think leaving a message like that is appropriate, you need to step back and come back when you can approach the situation more calmly. Oh, and don't bring enwiki drama onto Commons; goodness knows we've got enough of our own already. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 23:37, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi AntiCompositeNumber, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

File:CHSLD Herron logo.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Query

Hello!

I see you are pretty good at finding pages that meet certain criteria. Do you think you can make a query as such:

  1. Searches through all pages with links to any Talk: namespaces or the Commons: namespace that uses # in the link. (For example Namespace:Example#Axampel)
  2. Check if Axempel is a header on Namespace:Exampel.
  3. If yes: ignore
  4. If no: Check if Axempel is a header of a subpage of Namespace:Example (for example Namespace:Example/Archive 1)
  5. If no: ignore
  6. if yes:
    1. AND more than once: add to query.
    2. AND exactly once: add to seperate query.
I would like this since there are lots of mislinked links (because of archival) that are quite annoying to bump into when you want to follow a discussion. If this request of mine is too troublesome and/or boring feel free to ignore it. If you wouldn't mind to do it though it would be very appreciated :).Jonteemil (talk) 18:31, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
@Jonteemil: Yes, it's possible, but not simple. Fragments on internal links aren't stored in the database, so extracting them requires parsing the wikitext or rendered HTML. Finding the sections on a target page also requires parsing the wikitext or HTML (parsing the HTML is better as it includes things like <span id="Axempel"></span> anchors and template transclusions). I have code for another project that does something very similar, but it would need adaptation. It wouldn't be difficult to also iterate over the subpages. For #6, are you wanting them separated by number of broken links to a page or on a page?
I could create a report for this, but it would require custom code. The number of pages that would need to be parsed would also greatly impact how feasible the report would be to run. If you could shrink your search space down from the easily millions of pages that link to the commons namespace alone, it would cut down a lot on runtime. Targeting pages that link to pages with {{User:MiszaBot/config}} or {{Autoarchive resolved section}} would likely be a good start. If I get a chance, I'll look into this, but my time and energy is limited. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 19:19, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
To only target pages with {{Autoarchive resolved section}} would be smart. If you can make such a query let me know :). I want 6. to be seperated by number of Axempel headers on any subpage of Namespace:Exampel. So if for example there is a link on my user talk page that goes to Commons:Village pump#Need help but there isn't such a header there, but there is on Commons:Village pump/Archive/2012/02 and Commons:Village pump/Archive/2016/03, then that would be seperate to if it only was on one of the archives.Jonteemil (talk) 03:56, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Categorization

I greatly appreciate your making the NZTA-Sign-Spec template machine readable, as I did not know what modifications were required to do so. However, I am curious about your decision to change the categorization so that the template puts each image in the copyrighted free use master category individually, instead of using "Works of the New Zealand Transport Agency" as a sub-cat. Under the overcat principle, it would make sense to me that any reduction of images in the copyrighted free use category would be a good thing. Fry1989 eh? 19:15, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

@Fry1989: I was trying to see if the bot would detect that (it didn't work, at least not immediately). A subcategory may make sense here, and I'm not opposed to it. "Works of the New Zealand Transport Agency" is not the correct category though, since not all works of the NZTA are copyrighted free use. I'd suggest an intersection between that category and Copyrighted free use specifically for this template. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 20:39, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

I fully agree with with what you wrote in Phab:T254177#6208254. You described my thoughts, but I didn’t know, how to describe them correctly. Surprisingly you seem to be better in English than me. ;-) — Speravir – 21:44, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

A bug inside your bot

Please take a look to User talk:Alex brollo and to File:Otello - La tempesta - Arminio e Dorotea, Maffei, 1869.djvu chronology. The problem was simply a syntax mistake into Description field of Book template; licence templates codes were IMHO perfect. There's something wrong into bot algorithm. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 07:25, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

@Alex brollo: The template syntax problem caused the license tags to not be transcluded. This meant that the bot, and anyone who looked at the page (but not the wikitext) could not determine the license. In this case, the bot was operating as designed. Thank you for reporting your concerns, please let me know if you have any other questions. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 16:32, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for details. --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 18:02, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Deletion requests fixed

Hi AntiCompositeNumber, I see your bot tagged for deletion a number of my media contributions. They did not have the right licensing tag syntax after uploading them with Pattypan, which has caused this error. Please note that I have fixed the syntax and hopefully they are all Ok now. Thanks Iñaki LL (talk) 08:22, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

@Iñaki LL: Thank you for fixing the files, you are welcome to remove the deletion tag once you have done so. Thanks to your message, I've identified a problematic interaction with another bot undergoing trial that caused you to receive duplicate messages. Pay attention to copyright
Data:CapitolHillAutonomousZone by day.map has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Copyright on some images

Dear AntiCompositeNumber,

Thank you for the intervention of your BOT.

Let me clarify that there is no violation of copyright in the images I have published and listed here below:

all of them have been taken form this ref: Taramelli, Antonio (1931). Nuove ricerche nel santuario nuragico di Santa Vittoria di Serri, in Monumenti Antichi dei Lincei, XXXIV, 1931, coll. 5-122, figg. 1-67, tavv. I-III which was published in 1931. They have been scanned and edited. THE AUTHOR DIED IN 1939 thus more than 70 years passed and there is no copyright I have added the info about the book in the copyright section of each image so please cancel the deletion procedure.

Thank you again

Aga Khan (IT) (talk) 09:17, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello Aga Khan (IT). Wikimedia Commons uses a set of standardized COM:copyright tags to clearly indicate the copyright status of files. The best template to use in this situation is {{Pd-old-auto}}, and I have added it to those files, removing the deletion templates. This will make the copyright status clear to bots as well as people who do not speak English. If you have any other questions, please let me know. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:42, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the tip!

file renaming

May I ask how this request doesn't comply with renaming guidelines? It is indeed ambiguous. Prahlad (talk to me / what I've done) 18:24, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

@Prahlad balaji: To quote from es:Jabalera: "Jabalera es una localidad del municipio conquense de El Valle de Altomira", or, in English, "Jabalera is a place in the Cuenca municipality of El Valle de Altomira". El Valle de Altomira includes Jabalera, so changing Jabalera to El Valle de Altomira makes the file name more ambiguous, not less. I don't see the file name as being sufficiently ambiguous as to require renaming in any case. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 20:16, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
Ok the, how about "File:Jabalera - Flickr - M.Peinado.jpg" ? The "014553" bit isn't needed, no? --Prahlad (talk to me / what I've done)
I have also requested a rename (using the rename template). Prahlad (talk to me / what I've done) 21:29, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
@Prahlad balaji: I do not believe that the file should be renamed to that name based on the rationale you have provided. Per COM:FRNOT, As a matter of principle it's best to leave all files with generally valid names at their locations, even if slightly better names may exist. Additionally, files renamed under criterion 2 must be moved to a name that more accurately and specifically describes the file. If you were able to identify the location the photo was taken from or significant landmarks in the landscape, the file could be moved to include those. The Flickr ID number is generally left in the file name to preserve the provenance information. I'll leave the request open for another file mover to handle though, and you're free to amend it to improve it. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 23:01, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

AntiCompositeNumber, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Ditto. I think you'll be a great Admin. I only voted neutral because you didn't oppose my desysop, and anyone who really understands what has really gone on should have done so. If I were to give any advice on being an Admin it's to be fearless in preserving the policies, guidelines, and consensuses of this project. I tried, but according to some, failed. That isn't my problem any more. Perhaps you won't get death threats. however unlikely they are to be realised. But if you're doing the job properly, I think you may. There are a lot of unstable people out there. Limit your Admin acitvities to what is safe, and you won't be bothered with such things. Kind regards, Phil. User uploading copyrighted images, claiming it as own work or something else

Hello there. This user [1] has uploaded various images which I highly doubt is own work (he has for example uploaded a copy paste/slight recolor of the Russian imperial flag, claimed it as own work, and bizarrely tried to push it as the flag of some completely other entity). Deletion request from 17 July

Hello, I have had two pending deletion requests from 17 July, File:Deb-frecklington-lnp and File:Tim-mander-lnp. Both are images of Queensland politicians which have been taken directly from their party's website and have been labelled as CC-BY-SA despite the website clearly stating "All rights reserved" in the footer and in the site terms and conditions states

All media, content, information, trade marks, trade names, logos and other material provided through our Electronic Services (including all copyright and other rights contained in them) are our property or the property of our licensors and must not be reproduced or dealt with in any way without our consent.

Since it has now been two months since I nominated them with no response, I would appreciate it if you could have a look at these files and delete them if you establish that copyright infringement has occurred.

Goesseln

before you will send such a message

Again: please do not remove license templates from file description pages, as doing so does not adequately resolve any copyright problems the file may have. If you believe that a file is incorrectly licensed, please apply the correct copyright tag or nominate the file for deletion. Removing copyright tags, especially without an edit summary, is considered vandalism and continuing to do so may result in you being blocked from editing. Thanks, AntiCompositeNumber (Diskussion) 22:46, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

to me, I ask you to correct the license templates in c:File:Gedenktafel Via Verano (Vöran) Knottnkino.jpg. As the placque is in Italy, it shouldn't be declared as c:Template:FoP-Germany. And as the text is by de:Inga Hosp, who is just 77 of age, it is unlikely to be in PD-old-70 or in CC.

Unsure why bot is still posting warnings

Hi. Unsure about an issue. In regards to [3], the author is the U.S. government. Reading policy, it states US gov information is not copyright protected. The source is Radio Free Asia, a US gov broadcasting group. The URL to the image is included in description. The image uploaded is from Buddhist Door, crediting RFA, and the URL is also included in description. The RFA image is larger than the BD image, but otherwise appears identical. Is the problem resolved by simply uploading the larger image file from RFA? Thanks for the time! Pasdecomplot (talk) 11:59, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

@Pasdecomplot: While Radio Free Asia is funded by the US Government, it is not actually part of the US Government and their publications are not in the public domain (unlike Voice of America). Even if RFA-produced content was in the public domain, that photo would not be in the public domain because it was not produced by RFA but is Courtesy of an RFA listener. Unfortunately, this means that it can't be uploaded to Commons. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 20:10, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
That's too bad. Good news is your info clarifies a discussion on RS and RFA.
If "the listener" released copyright to RFA, and we had specific permission from RFA to use image, then it's ok for Commons?
Thanks for your help. 81.185.172.109 11:00, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
here's another quick question: if "the listener" was established as a US gov department, and therefore non-copyright protected, does RFA get copyrights thru publishing, or is non-copyright status inheritable? Thanks again. Pasdecomplot (doesn't look like auto login worked during last message). Pasdecomplot (talk) 19:08, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
@Pasdecomplot: The answer to your first question is largely "it depends". To license a work under a free license, you must have all of the exclusive rights of copyright, a well as the right to authorize others to exercise those rights pursuant to the license. If the photographer gave RFA those rights, which is unlikely, then RFA could release the photographs under a free license. As for your second question, once a work enters the public domain, it is no longer protected by copyright law. If someone added their own original copyrightable authorship to the work (creating a derivative work), only that new authorship would be protected by copyright law. Claiming copyright protection over a work that is in the public domain is called copyfraud. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 03:05, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks so much. In the 1st, the theoretical was what if the images were not copyright protected = US gov agency images; if the theory was confirmed, then RFA could not claim copyright if it didn't add authorship to the work/images. Did I understand the related issues correctly? Pasdecomplot.
@Pasdecomplot: Correct. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 17:06, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

Images that were marked PD old should not be deleted. Ankry (talk) 20:35, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

@Ankry: fixed. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 21:04, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

File:True Widow, performing live in Berlin in 2010.jpg

Hello, File:True_Widow,_performing_live_in_Berlin_in_2010.jpg is marked for deletion due to insufficient information on its copyright status. The copyright license of the image is Attribution 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0) with all the Metadata. What is the problem? It looks like the metadata is not attached to the image I downloaded to my computer from the Flickr account, and then uploaded to Wikimedia. Oroborvs (talk) 14:36, 11 October 2020 (UTC)

@Oroborvs: Fixed. When uploading files to Wikimedia Commons, you must include a valid license template, not just the name of the license. In the future, you should use toolforge:flickr2commons or the UploadWizard to upload files from Flickr to Commons, as they handle all the metadata and templates automatically. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 15:25, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
@AntiCompositeNumber: Thanks for your help. Oroborvs (talk) 15:42, 11 October 2020 (UTC)

I have provided copyright

This file - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lady_Mayoress_Elinor_Lupton_(right)_with_Princess_Mary_at_Leeds_Art_Gallery.jpg appeared in this 2020 book https://books.google.com.au/books/about/A_Regal_Yorkshire_Family_Tree.html?id=lN6RzQEACAAJ&redir_esc=y

I - Michel E. Reed - wrote the above book and give my permission for "commons" to use it.

The photo may have appeared in a newspaper elsewhere at some point.

Please let me know if this is OK. Thanks Srbernadette (talk) 21:18, 11 October 2020 (UTC)

Problem

Your BOT must be timed to trigger only after 24 hours; Thank you. Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 07:20, 11 October 2020 (UTC)

@Archaeodontosaurus: AntiCompositeBot's NoLicense task waits at least 30 minutes from the time of upload before processing a file. This is more than enough time to include a license tag as required by COM:LI. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 17:00, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
No you can be interrupted by thousands of problems; it takes 24 hours.--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 18:24, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

Thank you

Hello and thank you again for your quick and effective work bulk-deleting hundreds of files with copyright violations last week, and for your helpful advice a couple of days ago about a username change request via the stewards to undo an impersonation problem. Both issues are cleanly resolved now, and the real person has recovered her real name as her own. Kind regards. TarichaRivularis (talk) 17:37, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

@TarichaRivularis: I have applied {{Verified account}} to the new account's talk page to make clear that they are correct owner of the account. Thank you as well for helping to resolve the situation. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 16:32, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! Kevin from Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States here. I know it's been a tough year for everyone, and I hope this message finds you well.

You are receiving this message as a participant in last year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in the United States. First, a recap: We concluded with over 5,200 great photos of U.S. historical sites made possible by contributors like you. If you haven't yet seen, last year's U.S. winners are viewable here, and the international winners here (including multiple from the United States!).

Second, as you may have seen from the banner notices on Wikipedia, this year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States has been running through October instead of September in consideration of the pandemic and the hectic start of the fall season. Despite the challenges of the year, we're thrilled that the United States has surpassed 5,000 photo contributions so far.

October 31st is the last day to upload photos for the U.S. competition this year. If you've already contributed, thank you so much - and it's great to have you again this year! If you haven't yet contributed but are interested in participating again, you're invited to join us during these last couple days. Check out the United States event page for more information. Remember that you are welcome to upload and submit photos of historic sites that you've taken any time in the past, not just this month.

As always, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 07:20, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

Question de Alexazerio

coucou AntiCompositeNumber j'aimerais ajouter une barn star qui concerne ma participation a wikilove monument mais je n'arrive pas cordialement Alex--Alexazerio (talk) 08:21, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

When dealing with duplicates older uploads should be kept

This is discussion on following file now redirecting to newer upload which was essentially low scale and with lesser translated captions, which were later added. It is frustrating to maintain original uploads if such digressions are ignored.

Ohsin (talk) 09:36, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

@Ohsin: I've reverted the deletion. Lower-resolution files that are replaced by higher-resolution files are generally eligible for deletion, but since you say the old version is useful for something I have restored it. I've tagged it with {{Original}} to prevent others from deleting it in the future. In many cases files like this could be merged together, but this is not a good candidate because of the DR. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 15:36, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
