Appropriately Licensed

You participated at the earlier discussion on licence choice for Featured Pictures. A number of users felt that such restrictions should be made at policy level. Please comment at Commons:Requests for comment/AppropriatelyLicensed. This is a proposal to amend this licence policy to disallow future uploads where the sole licence is inappropriate for the media (e.g., GFDL for images). In earlier discussions there were a number of comments that, while reasonable opinions, did not align with Wikimedia's mission for free content. Please read the FAQ before commenting. Neue Bromelienbilder umbenennen

Moin Moin, seit gestern bin ich dabei neue Bromelienbilder hochzuladen. Leider habe ich in all dem Elan immer noch einige dabei, die ich falsch bennant habe. Nix dramatisches aber Sie passen nicht in mein Nummernsystem und es wäre toll, wenn Du die bei Gelegenheit umbenennen könntest. Ich habe einige bereits mit dem Baustein "rename" markiert. Es würden aber noch ein paar dazu kommen, später. Soll ich die Links hier posten oder wie kannst Du das sehen? Vielen Dank schon mal --Brocchinia (talk) 14:26, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Pictures: Falcate Oakblue

Amada, or is it Michael, you have uploaded two image files which you have suggested are of the species Mahathala ameria, but they are actually of a species of Arhopala from the centaurus species group (probably Arhopala pseudocentaurus, but I am not sure. However, it is misleading to have them labelled Mahathala ameria. If you look at other images of the actual M. ameria you will see that the shape of the hindwing leading edge is much different from your Arhopala species. Perhaps you would review these and perhaps transfer them to Arhopala pseudocentaurus instead. Regards, Alan Cassidy ACCassidy (talk) 17:22, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

Comment on Deletion requests

On Feb 22, 2012 you added a comment to Commons:Deletion requests/Category:Images taken by Israel Defense Force stating "The original statement that the images were released as cc-by-2.0 from the IDF spokement was here:". However this is incorrect, all the twitter says is "All of our photos now have a Creative Commons cc-by". It doesn't say they were "SA" (nor does it say they are "NC-SA"). The heavy used file Yes check.svg is protected against upload, you established the last protection. Because the SVG code is invalid I would like to replace it by a valid version. Those images where scanned from a printed picture so its very unlikely that you are the author. Also you have many, many many copyright and deletion requests on your page (I counted about 800!!! deleted pages). If you upload any other copyright violation I will block you indefinitely. Da du ja immer wieder Videos hochlädst und zuletzt sogar die Festplatte, möchte ich dich auf das Projekt „Videos für Wikipedia-Artikel“ aufmerksam machen. Wir veranstalten einen Video-Wettbewerb, anlässlich des Wissenschaftsjahres 2014 zum Thema „Digitale Gesellschaft“. Für diejenigen, die Interesse haben, aber sich mit Videoproduktion noch nicht auskennen bzw. wenn sie Video-Kenntnisse haben, diese teilen möchten, veranstalten wir Workshops. Nicht zuletzt wollen wir mit dem Projekt auch eine Diskussion darüber anstoßen, wie Videos für Wikipedia-Artikel aussehen sollen, welche Bildsprache der Wikipedia angemessen ist. Vielleicht hast du ja Lust, auch einmal ein Video zu produzieren oder dich an der Diskussion zu beteiligen?! Wir freuen uns über rege Beteiligung und Input an Ideen.

Attribution for image

Dear Amada44,

I would like to use your image of the Chironomid larva, available at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AUIRW-004.jpg, in an extension-outreach publication related to pests in community environments. This publication is purely for educational purposes and has no commercial interests whatsoever.

However, the suggested attribution format, e.g., "By Amada44 (Own work) [GFDL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html) or CC-BY-3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0)], via Wikimedia Commons", is very different from the style I will be following for other pictures in my publication, which will most likely be in the format: "Photo by Abc Defghijk", or "Photo by Abc Defghijk, Lmnopqr.org".

Therefore for the sake of consistency, kindly let me know whether I may cite the images in the above formats, and if so, what name/affiliation should I use.

But I don't go to all the wikipedia sites and insert my pictures. Why? Because most articles have good pictures. Imagine everybody placing images as much as you have done. Within weeks, wikipedia articles would have more images than words. So please, if you feel an article needs more images, then check if there are better ones on commons. If not, then yes please, add your image to the article. But do not add every one of your images to every possible article. Whether to upload new version or new file?

Hi Amada44,

I happened to drop by the Photography workshop for the first time in awhile today. While flagging some stuff for the archive bot I also looked at some of your work. Overall, it appears you've made many useful contributions. But (there's always a "but" isn't there, <wink>), after looking at:

File:Molen-Geesina-Utrecht.jpg, original, edited

... it occurs to me to suggest that—as the file uploaded over the original was cropped, given a new aspect ratio, and significantly retouched—it's likely preferable to upload it as a new file with an associated filename (something like "File:Molen-Geesina-Utrecht (crop, retouch).jpg") and then cross-link with the original in the file page texts. .

Similar to, for example:

[yeah, these are images of paintings rather photos, but they serve to illustrate the file handling methods]

I tend to ask myself to what degree I'm adjusting the existing image vs. adjusting the original artist/photographer. And I also think it's worth considering to what degree/whether information has been added/removed from the original when deciding between uploading adjusted images over an original or starting a new file. For example, globally adjusting the brightness/contrast of an image may be viewed as adjusting the quality of a print/scan, whereas substantial cropping might be viewed as adjusting the artist/photographer. There are subjective case-by-case considerations of course, but something to give thought to regardless. Somewhere-or-other there are (or at least 'were') established written guidelines along these lines which initially prompted me to give thought to such—back when I was image editing on a regular basis.

Additionally I'd like to offer a technique suggestion:

In Photography_workshop#Molen-Geesina-Utrecht.jpg the requesting user mentions "focus on the mill" and I think your crop addresses such quite well compositionally. This may also be an opportunity to tweak focus literally via—a subtle application of—unsharp mask. Might try applying it once globally throughout the image and then separately to just the windmill area. And compare. Often 'a little-goes-a-long-way'. A handy tool—which for a long time I'd not even known existed. : }

Hello @Kevjonesin: . Thank you for your detailed suggestions. I am well aware of the the overwriting/new-file discussion. I tend to favor overwriting, especially when the original image is of such bad quality as in the given image that I don't think it is of any use compared to the color corrected version. The windmill images is so bad, that actually nothing much can save it. If you compare the two images you will see, that I used the unsharp mask over the whole image. To create separate masks for windmill and background was much to much effort for an image which is heavily underexposed, blurred and full of compression artifacts. That is also the reason I wrote in the graphic lab: Well, I did something. But overall image quality is quite bad. Not much can be done. Normally (which I didn’t do here I add that if the uploader does’t like the edit, the uploader should undo it. cheers, Amada44 ^{talk to me} 11:09, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

There are a number of comments on your talk page of how you can improve your work. Its generally best to only add a very precise category. For example you moved this image (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Pterophoridae_sp._%282990460236%29.jpg&action=history) to the category moths, but it would be much better if it was at 'Unidentified Pterophoridae' or at least 'Unidentified moths'.

Bots

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

The simple solution is to simply include the "rawcontinue" parameter with your request to continue receiving the raw continuation data (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&rawcontinue=1>). No other code changes should be necessary.
Or you could update your code to use the simplified continuation documented at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Query#Continuing_queries (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&continue=>), which is much easier for clients to implement correctly.

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

not Asparagus officinalis

Hi Amada, thank you for your message. So I usually request a permission when I have real doubts whether the uploader was an author and moreover when they look suspicious (let's say "too professional"). This is the case for File:Savannah Cat closeup.jpg (please note that EXIF data is missing completely). And for File:Ceramic 3D Printing by Studio Under6.jpg the original description said: Ceramic 3D Printing by Studio Under and author=[[User:Eranglr1|Studio Under]]. Here I had doubts whether the uploader Eranglr1 is really a representative (copyrigh holder or disponent) of said Studio Under. In this latter case this exact images are also presented on Pinterest [2] and Facebook [3], of course not under free licenses. And as I understand your point about that it might not make much practical sense to tag images 10 years old, I do still believe that mentioned cases above did qualify for the permission request. However also, for old files I think that it's not the best to pretend that they 'might be' OK, just because we don't know it for sure, as we aren't able to verify it after such a long time. This point of view of mine is influenced strongly by our precautionary principle. Anyways, as I rarely personally delete the files that I tag myself, of course I'm completely fine and really open for any other admin to let's say change "npd" situation to normal "del-req". And this can be done without consulting me, as I'd express my opinion in the del req. anyways and let the community decide. Masur (talk) 11:15, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

Contact sheets by Paolo Monti

Hi Amada44, I have spotted that in a previous discussion you suggested deleting the contact sheets (or film strips) by the photographer Mario Monti. I very much agree with your comment that those thousands of files are not useful because too small to be cropped, for the best pictures there is already an individual file and because they are "groups of photos" with obvious problems of description, categorization, etc. I was wondering whether there has been any discussion on the issue already. @Desyman and Amada44: To be on Commons, files must have an educational or explaining purpose (potentially). Those images explain the developement of Paolo Monti's work, and were selected by experts to be digitized (the whole archive is much bigger). All images are of historical relevance, being Paolo Monti one of the most important Italian photographers of the past, and they were declared "of notable historical interest" by the Italian Ministry of Culture. Hey @Marco Chemello (BEIC): , I personally do not see an intrinsic educational value in those strips, and as I have said in many other occasions, the fact that Monti was "a famous photographer" does not make every single shot he ever made, even the mistaken ones as you have argued elsewhere, worth keeping on Commons. This is especially true for derivative works of his photos such as those files containing multiple films, in which individual photos are too small to be actually useful. Plus the issues mentioned above about the impossibility to correctly categorize them. Unfortunately I am not persuaded by the arguments you have brought. I would very much prefer to open a discussion on the entire category to see what the rest of the community thinks.--Desyman (talk) 22:38, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

@Desyman and Marco Chemello (BEIC): To have (all) the images of a notable photographer on commons is no doubt a great thing, also for historical reasons. Commons mission is also slowly evolving from an educational images server to an archive. If the contact sheets are just duplicates of the existing photos then I don’t see much value keeping them as they are very small and just duplicates of the large images. @Desyman and Amada44: Generally the photos on the film strips are not present also in a bigger format (or only few of them); they were digitized to explain how Paolo Monti worked. When we uploaded the already digitized archive on Commons, we discussed with the BEIC team if we had to upload only a selection of images (and what), but at the end we decided to make available the full archive (also artistic proofs and tests), for the reasons already explained. It is precisely the "slowly evolving" mission of Commons (although I would disagree in calling it evolution) into a virtually unlimited and free repository for any media material with basically no criteria to discriminate what is useful from what is out of scope that deeply worries me. These strips as well as the several meaningless test photos are a clear example. Even the most trivial photo can be justified as "illustration of something". And this is exactly what the policy guidelines on the scope of the project and on cancellation warn us from. Not to mention the non-univocal nature of those strips and the impossibility to categorize them correctly, which still remains completely unaddressed.--Desyman (talk) 00:20, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Vielleicht hast Du Interesse daran, das selbst zu machen. Hello. I've identified marine invertebrates down to orders several times only to find no such page exists. For example, I tried to place a photo of a ctenophore in unidentified Beroida but I only created a redlink. I had the same problem with other phyla. How can I fix this? False Deletion

Hey Amanda. I ordered a speed deletion (Commons:Deletion requests/File:SHSV Logo.png). But you deleted the SVG version (File:SHSV Logo.svg) instead of the png version (File:SHSV Logo.png). Hallo Amanda. Auf der Deutschen Wikipedia hat der Dateientlinkerbot wieder alle Seiten welche die SVG Version eingebunden hatten, die Datei endlinkt. Hallo @Malo95: . Ich wusste auch nicht, dass da ein zweiter bot noch mal entlinkt. Der Dateientlinkerbot durchforstet den lösch-log und hat dort den Eintrag der svg Datei gefunden und dann mal alles entlinkt. Ich habe es wieder hergestellt und jetzt sollte kein bot mehr entlinken.
