Image:Rigging-lugger.svg[edit]

Nice image :) . But it's bow looks like stern, and stern like bow. Look at en:Image:Fifiesmall.gif. I don't know why, but all boat's images have bow on right side, and stern on the left. I think it's good idea to continue this "system".

Hmm the bow with bowsprit is on the right, like in almost all the boat images. It's en:Image:Fifiesmall.gif which is "flipped" with respect to this trend.
On en:Image:Fifiesmall.gif the sprit is on a stern, that isn't bowsprit. Look where a rudder is.

I'm sorry for the blunder caused by my insufficient knowledge about the use of COAs. The Icelandic municipality insignias have been designed by various people, almost all in the 20th century. Some of them are registered trademarks and some are not, but they are all original designs meant to identify the municipality. The county seals are a different story. They were all designed by artist Tryggvi Magnusson (d. 1960) for the 1000 year anniversary of the Icelandic Althing in 1930. They were painted on large shields and prominently displayed on the Icelandic telegraph building close to the parliament for the festival. Also, I think a procession was organised with these at Thingvellir, at the time. Tryggvi and his wife both died without heirs (I think), in which case copyright passes to the Icelandic state (I think). Tryggvi also designed the older version of the Icelandic COA used between 1918 and 1944. These SVGs were created by myself based on Tryggvi's design. To note: the counties are no longer an official division in Iceland (since 1994) and are therefore a non-entity, in which case, if they ever held rights to the designs, these have now passed on to the holders of Tryggvi's copyright. :) :) I'm hope this information helps decide whether the designs can be published here or not, in which case I beg you to excuse my blunder. --Akigka 01:03, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I made the same mistake myself when I first started. Basically there are two parts to a CoA. It's defined by a en:blazon that is a description in words this description isn't copyrighted but may be trademark protected etc. The second part is the actual interpretation of the blazoning into an actual image. This image will be copyrighted by the author and the version officially used by the municipality etc. may be trademarked as well.
The solution for Commons lies in the fact that any (heraldicly correct) interpretation of the blazon is equally valid. That means that if you make your own interpretation of the blazon then you can upload it to commons under your own choice of license. there might still be other non-copyright restrictions (i.e. those linked to the actual blazon) so it is worth slapping a {{Insignia}} tag on the image as well.
This way of creating free Coat of Arms has been used extensively for amongst others the French, polish and Swedish wikipedia. The only restriction is that your image must be an interpretation of the blazoning and not of the version which Tryggvi painted.

Data source for Image:Steingrimsfjordur.svg[edit]

What geodesic data source did you use for making images such as the one of Steingrimsfjordur. in particular I'm interested in getting something specific enough to cover small streams in the area.

No geodesic data was used. The map is created by hand in Inkscape using satellite images and old maps as reference. The names were filled in using old maps and reviewed by a person who knows the area. Thanks, I used that map as a basis for naming a bunch of placenames on OpenStreetMap by uploading it to wrp.geothings.net and using the WMS source as a backdrop in JOSM. I also added a bunch of lakes from landsat imagery but a lot still needs to be added for that area and others.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license {{PD}}. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding {{PD-self}} if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.
